Amen! This is a series that has needed to be done for so long. We all fall into that trap of crap I don’t have whatever! Yet we have an entire bunch of other materials that can be used in its place.
I feel like there are always new materials coming out that can be applied to classic patterns. It’s hard to keep up. Your videos on new materials has helped a lot. Showing which ones I need for my bench and where to stay true to the OG materials. Excited for this next series to start up. Tweaking classics and actually making them better is hard to do!
Cool I do all the time. Tie the true and blue then try the true and red. Most flies I tweek never get fished but I love when a plan comes together. Can’t wait for the series.
Absolutely LOVE this new idea !!!! I too, have gone off the norm with many of my patterns. Why keep casting flies fish may have seen a dozen, or a hundred times & no longer have an interest in eating ??? Thanks, David Fisher-of-Men Fly Tying Ada, MI
🎉 YES !!! This is going to be great I can tell… just by the inflection of word and tone!! I still consider myself fairly new at tying. Trying different things. Some are awesome (my opinion), many others, not so much. Can’t wait… YOU HAVE MY ATTENTION!!!
I'm looking forward to this new series. Do you have mind powers? Your last couple series have been spot on to things I've been thinking about at the time....crazy.
This is exactly the mindset I have adopted since I started watching your channel Brian. It has changed my level of accomplishment for the better and elevated my love of this sport to a whole new dimension.
Great video! The "rules" I follow are basic thread control/durability techniques. After that, the sky is the limit. Sanchez, Galloup, Dennis, Potter, Walle, Chocklett, etc are great tiers. Learn from them and then apply some of there stuff, but eventually going beyond them in my tying studio. That, in my opinion, is true art and mastery!
Wow you have already helped me in my start into fly tying , and yes i have sometimes broken the rules using say a large tungsten bead on a very small hook , just to get it down faster contrary to what others said it worked , just adapt it so the bead stays in place etc, really looking forward to the new vids , thank you again, all the best , David.
At first I was like dang that's me in that thumbnail. Then I see rule breaking. I always knew I liked you for a reason beyond your shiny head and good manners. 🤣 Hope you're doing well, my friend. Miss seeing you down in your hood every February.
Brian, just wanted to say Thanks for your videos, they keep my mind open to all that the industry has to offer. So keep them coming and when did you change your name from Mike to Brian? Just kidding, I just wanted to throw in something funny after that Brain fart I had in your last video. Anyhow thanks again for all you do.
Commented on you Instagram page, but watched it again,if not for gentleman like you,Kelly Gallup,Kevin Fenstra,Andrew Grillos,Jerry French,Lee Wulff,Joe Brooks & others,we'd still be wearing nickers, fling'n dries & using bamboo rods, keep up the great videos 🤙
You will never know unless you tie it, fish it, watch it, go back to the bench and tweak it. It’s a great feeling when that variation you came up with on the bench hooks a fish. I’m looking forward to your series. Maybe you could point out during the sessions, why you are making the tweaks and how the different materials will affect the pattern. That would be awesome.
Very very good video and I agree. Screw the rules. I have 3 rules which I do bend regularly. A Will it catch fish? B If it won't, will it catch fishermen? If not one, then perhaps the other? And if both are not likely to happen, well the real reason I tie, is because I freaking LOVE to. So did I enjoy myself? Well if I did it was worth it wasn't it? 4.5 cent hook, couple of penny's worth of thread, maybe a dime to a quarters worth of feathers, fur or fiber. 15 minutes where time ceases to exist while I flex my creative muscles. Yeah, that's priceless.
I used to be very intimated by the Orvis crowd when I was a kid. All the high dollar gear and scientific talk, but I realized most of them didn't have any real fishing instincts. Really, it was a type of brainwashing. Now I can out fish most of those "Orvatrians as like to call them." Thank you for another practical video.
I think I have broken the rules of fly tying more times than anyone I know and it has ruffled sone peoples feathers but at the end of the day I don’t care lol
The "no rules" aspect of this game, and the surprising pushback from some of the old guard, didn't really hit me until I started tying. Actually, it really didn't hit me until I caught my first fish on one of my own flies. Why? Because it was a terrible fly, but that didn't matter, the fish thought it was food. It just hit me, we're just throwing "stuff" on a hook, and that's it. The fish have no rules, so why should we? I promise you I can tie a killer fly with cat fuzz or belly button lint, and that says something! The same goes for all the other gatekeeping opinions about how we catch fish. All the criticisms about style, technique, method, or equipment.... they all don't matter. All that matters is whether it's fun and effective. My only rule is to care about the fish, the fisheries, and the people I share the water with. We're all part of a community, so let's take care of everything that allows us to share this passion.
Fly fishing should be fun ,fly tying should be fun. experiment, fish don't care about pretty. their only concern is to eat,.to breed, to keep from getting ate. So just enjoy.papa

I say let the fish decide what is awesome.
If I didn’t break the rules from the beginning, probably wouldn’t of fly fished for this long! Great channel as always, keep slaying RUclips 🙌
Thanks!
Can’t wait for the new series! Love your videos Bryan!
Thanks, so much!!
Nice Brian! Be you! Thats why you have the following you have! 👏👏👏

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS!!!!!!! Thank you for your long distance mentoring😬
Thanks so much for watching!
This is exactly the mindset I have adopted since I started watching your channel Brian. It has changed my level of accomplishment for the better and elevated my love of this sport to a whole new dimension.
Very cool! If we are forced to stay in a box.....our sport gets stale.
DUDE! My thoughts exactly. Looking forward to the next video already!
This is going to be fun.
I've been tying for just about 4 years now, and I'm always looking at patterns and saying 'what if?' I'm so glad I'm not alone
Definitely not alone!
There are no rules when it comes to fly tying. A child or beginner will color by the numbers, but the true craftsman will let the creativity flow.
👍👍👍

Heck yah. The rebel of fly tying. Can’t wait.
Love it thanks for the love and passion of it all😉👍
Thanks for watching!!!
Motivated to get to the bench more, now! Great vid Brian!
Awesome! Thank you!
Dude. Now we are talking. You have my salute to rule breaking on your shelf somewhere. Lead on my friend. This video was extremely well made.
I do!! Thanks, man.
I can't wait. Let me know when so I can get the popcorn ready
🍿

Glad I can help!!
Awesome 👏 series idea. Even when it comes to cooking 🧑🍳 and a recipe book 📕 people add their own tweaks. Shouldn’t be any different here. 😎🎣
EXACTLY!!
Yeah buddy!! I can’t wait for this!
You and me both!
At first I was like dang that's me in that thumbnail. Then I see rule breaking. I always knew I liked you for a reason beyond your shiny head and good manners. 🤣

I am feeling out format now.....that is one of the things I am knocking around.
Brian try a Drew Estates cigar Sweet Jane or Fat Bottom Betty. Really good 👍🏻. Can't wait for the new video's Thanks
I got a Fat Bottom Betty last night!! So far, I am pretty sold on the Drew Estates Factory Smokes....like, all of them. 👍

Blanton's... 😁
Yup.
There are no rules to creativity!
I've been tying 18 months...am I still a beginner? I just use whatever I can get my grubby mitts on to tie rough equivalents. lol
Is the series name “Streamer Tweakers” in the running, I hope?!🤪🙌🏻
😂🤣😅

What Rules.
🫳🎤⬇️
Not sure where you ever thought there were such strict rules
Not sure you are among the people you comment on.
Brian, this is fly tying, THERE ARE NOT RULES!!!! Keep the irreverent stuff coming buddy.
