So many variable answers to this. I tied flies with no bobbin for years. I whip finished by hand for years. The list goes on.
I had to switch to tools because for years I worked in the oil industry and my hands got so rough I would break thread on my Callouses. That and my hands are large enough, I am sure there are people happy I'm not their Proctologist! 🤣😂.
Some tools are designed to catch you and I because they are shiny. Some tools are practical and some are a little of both.
As we get more into whatever a Hobby may be to us, we decide "Do we want to own better tools?"
    "What is a "Better tool?"
To me I have to use bowling or Golf to answer this.
As we get better at what we do, we begin to look up from our tools, either a Ball, a Driver or in this case a half hitch/hair stacker tool. My Bic pen tube has served me well over the years. After tying for 50+ years, I have done DIY for decades, but more recently I have been upgrading my tools. Most of what I use are "Art,," in and of themselves. Why? Why does a Bowler buy his own ball, or a Golfer spend $1G+ on a driver?
We do because we take as much pride in our gear as we do in our tools. Does this tool qualify as Art? I think so. Remember before you get going with Rembrandt jokes, art is very "Subjective!"
I like the look of it and that is the first hurdle. Somebody was puffing on a Hookah one day and went..."Wow man! This fixes everything...almost maaan! 😀
Seriously, if it was blown glass, it would be called "Art."
Good job highlighting it, I saw it in your earlier show when you hunted at it.
Christmas is coming, you can explain to your friends how ""My wife was spoiling me!"
Nobody will be any the wiser. Now if they could fit a bobbin in there as part of the whole thing, what a tool that would be.
Anyway I think I may have talk myself into one of these. I know it may be a little early, but Merry Christmas to all of you. Stay safe and DO NOT! Use it for that! 😂🤣

So I got mine a week before Christmas. I was hoping to find the set, user friendly and I did! I have large hands but these tools fit so comfortably in hand, that I wish everyone made them!
I don't think the price will hurt much after you get it figured out! Well made, attractive and one of the nicest tools for my dollar. Glad I took the plunge, you will be as well. I am in Canada I have no benefit from a positive review.

Might look into getting the larger version for some of the muskie flies I occasionally tie, still got that og wood one and it gets the job done for most of my tying.

You are right to mention price. $48 is completely out of line. I expected you to say 20 and that would still be high but acceptable.

Been making a few copies of the dead fly on my wood lathe half hitch on one side and hair stacked and packer on the other. But this looks more refined and that slick factor is $
Glad someone who could fill this need has the ability to bring it to market for others

$48.00..???? This is what's wrong with the fly tying industry. Ridiculous prices for tools and materials that can be substituted easily with cheap household items. A spent Bic pen does the same thing this does.

If you know someone with a 3d printer you could go that route. Or if you can get your hands on a cylinder of plastic you could shave and drill out the openings and contours you need for what you want to do.

People will spend $20 to save $5! Or if they don't want to spend the money they downplay the tool. There are a couple of tools I will not use, before I bought this set I used a Bic Pen for 35 years. After seeing this and speaking to the machinist who makes them, I was happy to get them and even happier to use them.
I agree with you @@dominiqueleblanc2193 if you own a vice, I know a fellow who uses a set of Vice Grips instead. I will not harrass anyone who likes an alternative tool. I like a nice fitting set of tools and I see you do as well. Take care from Canada! Merry Christmas!!

Ordered the set! Buy once, cry once. I'd still pick up a dead fly hair packer if given the chance. I tried the fugly packers and they just weren't very ergonomic and were awkward. People will bitch about the price, but the probability of these being available in 5 years is a very low statistic. Hopefully the MN fly tool guys find some success with these.

I don't half hitch flies, and if I need to pack hair I'm reaching for the Pat Cohen tool. For me this seems like several ok tools all in one, and that's not my style. Call it the Alton Brown in me- but multi tools don't have a place on my bench.

  • @JimMurphyinSTL

I'm betting you'll STILL get questions about your half-hitch tool. The difference is you'll be able to provide a link to buy it. The hair packer accessory is a nice touch.

Is that chunk of plastic really wortj $50? A huge part of fly tying imo is innovation and being resourceful. So many things could easily substitute that $50 tube.
