    Being a wire guy as well, a trick I use is squeezing the wire with pliers to create grooves that allows the thread to really bite into it. A little bit of super glue never hurt anyone either.

    I switched to using an articulation shank a while ago, and haven't looked back since. Less fouling, no beads, no breaks, if it gets bent, just bend it back. If it doesn't swim right, bend it a little up, down, left, or right to tweek the action.

    I’ve only been tying a year, but haven’t articulated yet. That’s fixing to change! I have the materials..and now the right video. Going to do the Foxy Game Changer (thanks for that video also) for Largemouth Bass. Really appreciate you showing me this. Thank you! Have a great one 🎣

    So I use 19 strand beadalon. It was a Kelly Galloup recommendation, and I absolutely love it. It is coated with vinyl or something so that thread wraps bite right into it, locking it down. When I lash it to the hook shank I leave a tag end by the eye and fold it back over and lash that down as well; I do the same after I thread the back hook on and lash that to the shank. Then I take gorilla super glue and coat all the wraps on the shank with it. There's no WAY it's ever coming out, and the wire is strong as hell plus coated to prevent rusting and is stiff yet flexible. Just figured I'd share my method.

    For larger flies (Sz 4+) I use the 19 strand beadalon with appropriately sized (whatever that means =) plastic beads. I mostly tie micro streamers in Sz 6, 8, and 10 and I use 60lb Suffix 832 and glass beads. The main difference is that when I use braid I double the line and connect the back hook like I would connect a leader to a loop. Then I thread the beads on the double line, and then tie it to the front hook. I guess this is called Charlie Craven style and he illustrates this in his Baby Gonga tying videos. The key is to tie the back hook in pretty snug, almost to the point to where it doesn't move. When the fly gets wet it loosens up the right amount. Never experienced fouling, even when I get a channel cat rolling in current, which before destroyed most flies.

    I think a big take away is: wire, mono, and braid all work, try them and see what you like.

    Try using a small file to rough up your hook that way the thread and mono,wire whatever use will grip better to the hook. I seen Dave Whitlock doing that on some of his flies he was tying years ago

    I use a coated bead wire these days. I've tried all of the above, and also tried a non coated wire. The non coated wire was by far the worst I used. It breaks easily. The braid sucked too. It fouls like crazy. Mono isn't bad, but I think you have to find a balance of size vs strength to get the right movement out of the fly. Great video Brian!

    I also use wire. I like the way you tie in your wire. Thanks for the tip. I also like to squeeze the wire with pliers to add grooves for grip. Not sure it's adding anything.

    Well here's your first load a crap (imagine a big steaming doogie doolie here). Well in my world it's wire or nothing because where I live (Kelly Galloup's home state) there's big toothy critters that will sever anything but wire in a heart beat. Now where you are I don't think that's so much the case but, for the little added expense, it just doesn't make sense to me to tie second hooks that might break off. But like so many other things in life, to each their own. Maybe your next video can address the really important part of the articulation subject and that's horizontal or vertical eyes! Personally I come down on the vertical eye side of the question because the second hook can then be directly behind the first hook not off to one side. Keep the good videos coming.

    I use wire and glass beads for so long. I use braid for swinging flies but keep me the hell away from mono.

  • @dashippo
    @dashippo 2 года назад

    Personally I use a wire leader called "wire bite" from Rio, it has a outer coating that gives a touch and I've never had one come loose or break on me. Honestly I've never had an issue tying it in. As for beads I have a drawer full of glass, plastic,metal, skulls, long, thin....etc and I put whatever will look the best with the fly I'm tying.

    Do you double over your wire on the shank when you tie it in?

  • @jameskerr9897
    @jameskerr9897 4 года назад

    Wire and Mono for me. If I'm tying for trout, bass, and basically anything freshwater except for musky and pike I'm gonna go with the mono. I only use wire for saltwater situations or when dealing with toothy predators. If you lay down a base of thread first then add a thin bead of super glue the length of the hook shank. Then tie in the mono over that with extremely tight thread wraps. After all that I whip finish my thread and seal it all off with Solarez bone dry uv resin. Guarantee that will never spin or change positions on the front hook

    Great video Brian! I have a question for you on this one, do you ever have issues with the wire rolling to the side? I feel I have a similar method as you showed, but sometimes the wire on top will want to roll into the groove between the hook shank and the bottom wire while I am wrapping or when I tighten the thread tension. Typically I back off the wraps and go again, but sometimes it will roll after I have more materials tied in and I find I have a crooked swimming fly. Would love to know if this has been an issue you have ran across and any ideas for correcting it. Thank you for all you do!

    • @flyfishingtheozarks
      @flyfishingtheozarks  2 года назад +1

      Hey Nick, If you try hard enough anything will roll around the hook--tying something that is round on a round object will tend to do that. BUT, if you are using the right thread and tying with TONS of thread pressure you can get this stuff really, really tight. Stay away from GSP for articulating hooks, I am a guy that uses threads at least as large as 210 to articulate with.
      Glue is a joke, too. If these things are going to spin....they are going to spin and there is no stopping them. If glue "works" it is probably because it helps "tighten" thread that would have been a little loose----but will fail anyway.

    • @_nickhill_
      @_nickhill_ 2 года назад +1

      @@flyfishingtheozarks Thank you for the answer! I have been tying streamers with 140, but it sounds like it would be worth it to go 210 and up my thread tension. I agree with the glue, it is useful but not a solves-all. I will grab some 210 next time I am down in Sapporo, and give it a go! Thanks again!! 🙇‍♂

    Good discussion. I think you overlooked two things in the comparison between wire and mono, and I’m sure its because at this point its just understood after tying as much as you (and me) do. Wire, in particular Beadalon and similar kink very easy, and its unrecoverable. Sometimes new tyers doom flies while tying and its just impossible to remove a kink in these wires. I know Knot2Kinky doesnt have this issue but I dont know many articulating with it. Compared to mono, which you CAN get a kink out of. Not endlessly but its slightly easier.
    I have interviewed many streamer tyers and wire is the choice 9/10 times. But I have spoken with guides in Michigan and Arkansas who swear by mono, and I give weight to their opinion. Some guys even run clipped Flymen shanks, guys like Mike Schultz etc.

    Wire, mono, or kevlar(fire wire) personal preference only. I too have switched over to plastic beads. One fly will last many fish until you Charlie Brown the fly. Break the bead and it's done. Sort of hard to have a fly that can't be rebuilt.

  • @douggrover7975
    @douggrover7975 4 года назад

    Also, I thought the purpose of using glass beads over plastic was that glass doesn’t compromise the weight of the streamer making it float or not sink as much as intended.

    • @flyfishingtheozarks
      @flyfishingtheozarks  4 года назад

      I honestly don't think the few grams of difference in weight of glass vs plastic is going to make a noticeable difference. I think they only way it would make a difference is if you were using bare hooks with no material on them.
