The Black Mamba - Fly Tying Episode 20 - UKFlyFisher

- In today's video, we are looking at the famous and deadly Black Mamba. I first tied this style of Black Zonker in 2012 and ever since, it has been my number 1 fly in terms of producing fish, every single season. There is a reason customers keep coming back for more. If you are sitting at home and thinking ‘It’s just another Zonker’ you’ll be sorely mistaken. Give it a tie and you’ll soon see why this fly is slowly becoming everyone’s go-to fly.

This was a great beginners kit for a great price. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxKRURvLsu9Vvyw7gIuvt8FsApoQNCdz-1 Its given us a huge variety to test out and see what works well and what we like to use. Majority of the flies have stayed together well, but some of the rainbow warriors did unravel after catching a few blue gill. All in all, this was a great kit and are so happy with the purchase and value for money.
Tied up a few variations of this fly. Purple uv ice dub, purple rabbit strip, black fur and purple uv ice dub etc...the water is fairly murky as it's the runoff season here in Colorado. Took two rods. One for nymphing and my streamer rod. This fly killed it when nothing else was even getting any action. Highly recommend this recipe!!! Thank you. The trout do not...
Just started tying flies. Tied a variation of your fly (didn't have all the exact items but made do) caught a lovely rainbow with it today.
That's great news. Keep up the good work pal.
July 11, 2023. Caught 3 RBT with the Chartreuse bead Black Mamba. It definitely works! Thank you! 😀🎣
Best fly in my box. Saved me blanks and caught me my bigger fish. Just think how many fish you would catch if you didn't spend most of your day going round helping others. I still remember the beginning of our friendship which was by me constantly badgering you on tips and tricks. When I first started and was blanking I would phone or text you for advice. Who knew that would be the beginning of something amazing. We will all keep helping those that need it. You know how my job involves helping traumatised young people and how fly fishing has helped some of these young people. Thanks to you and your kindness.
Thank you Tim. Always happy to help and it's been great to see you evolve into the angler you are today. It also shows through the great friendship we now have, how when it comes to fly fishing, it doesn't matter what walk of life you come from. We are all there to enjoy our great sport. It's even more enjoyable with friends and I certainly enjoy wetting a fly with you. Happy new year. I look forward to our next outing.
nice fly-s going to tye some now....thanks for your time showing how it is done...
Another great video Gareth. Both of these patterns have caught me some cracking fish and will always have a space in my fly box. Never fails to get interest from trout this pattern all your hard work and testing has paid off and a pattern to ty up for sure 🎣
Hi Gareth, one year later got the materials for this fly and tying it. I am loving it and what an awesome fly! Will be fishing the Black Mamba here in South Africa soon. Thanks, great to see someone sharing and helping others to excel.
Hi. I'm just starting out with the fly fishing and came across your fly tying tutorials. Filled me with confidence and I'm looking forward to tying a fly from your instructions shortly. Thanks and keep up the videos. 👍
Thanks you tube recommendations! Looks like a winner. Very similar to a very effective pattern we use in the US called a slumpbuster!
Really interesting take on what I would call a bunny leech. I think I need to give it a shot! Thanks for the video!
Nice one Gareth, the best fly tying video I have seen. I don't really watch fly tying videos, but I think I will look out for your next one as I love all the other bits. Spot on mate. Shaun.
Thank you Shaun. Have a great new year and keep up the good work.
Good lure pattern. I tied a few of these over the recent cold snap and got to try them out on a local fishery this week. I caught my biggest ever rainbow trout on a chartreuse and blue zonker variant of the mamba so am going to tie up a few more black and variants today. I hope your suggestion that the fly stimulates an aggressive response in trout is proved over time but the pattern is certainly off to a good start with me. Thanks for the video.
Finally got a chance to try this beauty out today, had 5 to the net, lost 2 at the bank and missed about 10 not bad for a 3hr session ☺️ awesome fly Gareth 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Not bad at all. I'm jealous though, still stuck inside in Wales. Great angling pal.
Nicely done, can’t wait to give it a go!
Thank you Jim.
As I promised I am giving you a report on using the black momba on both large and small mouth bass. It has been amazing. My first cast to a beaver lodge produced a two pound smallmouth. I have taken many more since including several pike. Thank you for the wonderful fly. Even a small fly will take big fish.
Thank you Frank. Do you have any pictures? Sounds like you've been having a successful season.
Hi: I've been working with leeches and marabou tails, etc. Found your video and tied a few up and at the end of the day, tied one on and first cast towards the treeline of the lake, boom--nice brown sucked it in--just like magic! Just like you said! Thanks truly, randy c
Yahoo! We will use this for sure here in Utah. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year from across the pond.
Very nice looking fly. Ryan Houston said to check out your tutorial I am glad I did. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for coming over. I'll be sure to check out his channel too.
Beautifully tied. Nice fly.
Thank you.
I just discovered your video - it's terrific. I'm in the middle of the U.S. but intend to try this. Thank you.
Thank you. Let me know how you get on with it.
Thanks for sharing this pattern, Happy New Year
No problem Graham. Have a great new year pal.
LOVE IT...I WILL BE TYING UP SOME OF THESE FOR SURE. GREAT VIDEO, WELL DONE...EVEN I CAN TIE THESE WITH MY 2 LEFT FEET. TYVM FOR THE VIDEO.
Glad you enjoyed. Thank you for the feedback.
It’s my third thumb that gets in my way. Seriously simple and looks deadly.
Zonkers always work well and this is a smart combo. Caught several rainbows on it in the streams of Mt Kenya and the Aberdares. Have also tyed them in smaller sizes with a mink strip for #3 rod fishing. Good alternative to nymphs in the pools.
Happy New year from across the pond. Nice black zonker variant! Highly effective on Brown's & Steelhead in Michigan in the fall when fry are abundant. Cheers!
Happy New Year and thank you for your feedback.
I really like this pattern.
First time have watched you tie and very nice.
Might work on lake Taneycomo here in US
tied this earlier this year and blanked....... tried again 2 weeks ago at Albury and had take after take: excellent . Thanks for the video. Lindsay Simpson eat your heart out!
Brilliant. Glad you had a good day.
Fly works great ,tested in South Africa last weekend -awesome !
that is the best looking rabbit material i have ever seen.
Blob and Buzzers Zonker strips. Superb.
I've watched this several times, now. This is a very smart pattern: numerous trigger points and one that you can fish aggressively to cover water. It's a bit late this year for me to work this on Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, but I will, and I'll let you know how it worked.
I put together a similar pattern in white (white zonker strips, white crystal dub) for steelhead this past spring and it worked very very well.
Great tie. Thanks.
Thank you Dennis.
That is a beautiful fly!! AP ties your fly with a bead and a dubbed collar.. i am fascinated by the simplicity and the coherent look of the way you tied it.. i love it and going to give it a try. awesome ... both your versions are classic... cant wait to try in in my local waters here in the Catskills ... J
Thank you. Let me know how you get on.
Wow tied this yesterday slightly different colure rabbit hair but absolutley deadly second cast and into a fish many thanks great pattern 😁😁
Nice fly-all give them a go👍
Great fly, I made a variant of this but didn't have all the materials so got straight on eBay for some materials. With flies like yours in surprised you don't have a team to help you tie for the shop.I always take spare money when I go to garn just in case I bump into you for some flies.Happy New year, tight lines for when we can fish again.
Awesome to hear Rhys. Hope it catches well for you. A happy new year and I'll hopefully fish with you later in the year.
I would love to try this fly here in Ontario Canada, we have a similar one called white Death, but this one looks really nice!!!
I started tying a similar fly about 3 years ago that i called my manzanita mohawk
That was so successful the naysayers who i gave a few to couldnt believe the results of using it for german browns here in the states
Hands down the best fly in my fly box 💪
Join the club.
I live in Pennsylvania. This looks great for high water steelhead. Might use a blue or orange body/head.
Thank you for sharing this fly Man, I'll bet the shape plus the color are the keys to the aggravation in these already aggressive fish. I'll most definitely let you know how they do on the great lakes...
Thank you John.
Hi Gareth Happy new year to you and your family, it's certainly one of the best flies that i fish with, caught some big fish in Ellerdine, and other fisheries nice one Gar.
Happy New Year Brian
first time watcher, new subscriber. excellent tutorial.
Thank you Robert.
Very tasty tying, just discovered your site, great job 🇮🇪
Thank you.
Is a tippet and a leader, the same thing,
Tied this pattern the other day and it really works. Lost my pb rainbow due to me having no idea how to play a large trout.
Hi Gareth, when I had a deer farm at Hamurana in Rotorua New Zealand in 1988, I would do a lot of night fishing (22.00 - 24.00hrs) on the river mouths of the Rotorua region’s many lakes for Rainbow and Brown trout. I tied a similar fly but used a #2 long hook, fluro body, red tail and black marabou. If I could get a black cat skin (road kill) I would use that as it would make the best night fly ever. Love your modern methods and will tie some to use on our winter run Steelheads. Cheers mate. Harera..
That sounds like one mean fly. Please let me know how you get on, I would love to catch a steelhead.
@@UkFlyFisher Hi Uk, going fishing next month for a week on the Tongariro River (the one that Zane Grey made famous) as the Brown Trout jacks will be starting their runs from Lake Taupo to their spawning grounds up the rivers. Last year we had one of the best seasons and my son caught his biggest brownie of well over 12 pounds and we were catching anything up to eight a day all over the six pound mark. The high point for us was that they were all magnificent fish, deep in belly and wide in girth, so we are hoping for the same. The big Steelheads will start running when the snow starts to cover the volcanos in July onwards. Its all go for us oldies! Harera
@@pierevojzola9737 That sounds amazing. I hope you have a great time.
next wild cat I shoot will keep some skin for you when I get a black one
Absolute smallmouth killer! Thanks for the vid!!!
Thank you.
I can’t wait to Tie some of these flies!! I’ll definitely let you know how I do!
I tied up a few of these now I’m excited to try them
Thanks for this video. I learned that I have been using zonker strips all wrong. Thanks to your video my zonkers look much fuller up towards the head.
I'm glad I could help. Thank you for your feedback.
Nice tie bud. I made some a while back for clywedog with great success!!
Yeah ,Clywedog trout love this fly.
Started watching your videos! I live in the US in Texas and fly fish for bass mostly. Kind of jealous of all the trout you guys have lol. I’ve been watching and enjoying your videos. I’ve learned a lot. Thank you for what you’re doing!
Thank you. Plenty more to come. I will be back uploading regularly this week.
@@UkFlyFisher it’s really cool to see that someone actually wants to help the fly fishing community and reply to their viewers. Don’t feel like you see that anymore and it doesn’t go unnoticed! Thank you
@@Aquarium1992 Appreciate it and am glad to hear it's appreciated. I always think, if someone takes the time to watch my video, the least i can do is take the time to make sure they enjoy it and answer any questions they may have.
@@UkFlyFisher I’ve tied the black mamba variation and some other variations of your flies. Haven’t got to use them just yet. But I might soon! Thank you!
@@UkFlyFisher Black mamba variations work for sure. Caught some bass on it today. In windy conditions no doubt. Thanks man!
This fly has caught me some great fish. Thank you again for taking the time to share it. Happy new year bud.
Happy new year.
Hi guys I have tied your pattern with great catch returns, but I have put my own twist on your fly,I have done really well up until now catching fish into the twenties,I tie your fly in olive with a longer zonker strip to great effect, same with the black and pink version.Cheers guys
Fantastic video Fantastic looking fly going to get my first fly tying kit wish me luck
Enjoy and welcome to the family.
Thank you for Putting all the materials you used in the description it really helps for research purposes. Really great video as I am not new at fly fishing but I am new at fly tying
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
Great fly,thanks.
I think all us eventually will come across that one person whom has no morals or ethics, I cant stand theives ,its good that you put out a positive message. Thanks for the video upload
Just used one of the standard black mamba's today in 4 casts caught 3 and lost 1, deadly fly Gareth! Amazing 😁
Brilliant thanks for letting me know.
I am in northest Thailand and plan to tie this evening to give it a try here. Lots of exotics so should befun trying it out on local ponds and lakes. Have had good results with dark rabbit strip flies on barramundi chao pariah catfish and snakeheads. Will let you know how it fishes here. Bob in MahaSarakham
Please do. Feel free to send me pictures to info@ukflyfisher.com or on our Facebook. Look forward to hearing back from you.
I been tying on a SS size 4, and a cone head for bass here in the states and killing with it
Thanks for the pattern
No problem. Any pictures of your catches?
I’m tying some for lg/sm mouth bass here in north Jersey with a ss mustard size 4/0 heavy wire hook… we’ll see how it goes (be interesting to see if the plain straight hook will work)
Maritimes in Canada will be testing out this pattern my man! Thank you
Awesome, let me know how you get on.
@@williamschoenith8968 that's how I do the new rainbow one. A lovely effect on the fly.
I'm going to tie some and try them out here in New England this spring. Thank you
Brilliant let me know how you get on?
@@UkFlyFisher will do!
Looks great
Thank you.
Potentially significant that black with chartreuse was once a staple color scheme for largemouth bass soft plastics here in America. Wonder if there's something universally special about it to fish.
Awesome vid most helpful. Just about to start fly tying myself. Hope to maybe bump into you at a venue some day, I live in South Wales.
Awesome Keith. Come and say hello if you see me out and about.
Really like your fly. going to try it here in California, USA.
Brilliant let me know how you get on.
Looks like a great fly to throw as a streamer or on a trout Spey . Added feature is all the materials are readily available:-)
Thanks from Montana
No problem. Let me know how you get on with it. I'm looking at starting to tie and fish streamers here in the UK. Any advice to a novice in the method.
We use the streamers a few ways out in the west , from a drift boat , wading and under an indicator . From a boat or wading you can use a 6wt for smaller streamers like wooly budgets , leaches zonkers etc . I prefer to use an 8wt like a TFO BVK or Mangrove because lots of time I will be using a 10 to 12’ sink tip T-8 or T-11 then add 4’ Maxima leader 12 to 16 lb and we are throwing big articulated streamers 3 to 6” Long Sex Dungeons, Gongas etc. the 8wt just makes so much easier to turn all this junk over . I’m sure RUclips has a million ways to do it . Best way is come to Montana we can show U :-)
Happy Trails
Great fly Gareth been in competition anglers fly box for years here in Northern Ireland in all colours
Yes, a modern twist on the zonker that outcompetes its predecessors. One competition anglers will pick up on quickly if they are smart ;) .
@@UkFlyFisher yes 100%
I spend most of my summer fishing smallmouth bass in the near north oh Ontario Canada. I have a camp on small lake ( almost exactly one hundred acres) that with an abundance of trophy smallmouth and largemouth bass have a bunch put together in larger sizes I think that they’re going to be fantastic. I’ll let you know at the end of the summer how they worked
Brilliant, keep me updated.
Very nice. Will try that for walleye here in Canada.
Nice job !
Thank you :) .
Looks like a muddler minnow crossed with a pimped out woolly bugger, nice fly.
Thank you.
This fly looks like a variation of John Barrs slumpbuster or possibly the bo face, Very good fly here in Montana.
I'll have a look at both. Always looking to add to my arsenal.
Slump buster is tied with pine Squirrel and has a wrapped collar behind a cone head.
Both use zonker strips just different animals.
Great fly. I'm going to try this fly down here in New zealand
Let me know how you get on :) .
So do you think its the action from stripping line in that makes these work so well for you? I will tie a few up to try but normally I lake fish with sink line and slow troll. We'll see if they work as well fishing this way as well. Appreciate the video
I think to simplify the tie just use the chartreuse thread for the whole fly as I do. Also a chartreuse bead works well. Nice tie!
I prefer the Black as when you tie the zonker strip in it looks better. I'm also starting to prefer a black rib too. Chartreuse and green beads work great, however, I've had more success with the black nickel bead and a chartreuse collar. Give them a go and let me know how you get on.
@@UkFlyFisher Will do, unfortunately the winter here in Montana does,nt look like it's going away any time soon so we will give them a go sometime around April.
Hell of a video
Thank you.
Cool name for a fly
I’ll be tying a few of those up tomorrow thx for sharing. Happy New Year
Happy new year Sam.
Trying to post a picture of my version.
Thank you for this video… well taught and explained!
Quick question:
With the weight on the shank, do you find it swim with the hook point up?
I’m hoping not due to the hair floating it to make the point stay down.
Also, are you on FB?
I may have to post the picture on there.
Thank you!
Yes, I am on FB and the buoyancy of the rabbit strip helps it swim point down.
Brilliant video ! Thank you for sharing !
Thank you.
Love your ties. Question, on the one with the weighted bead, with that eyelet placement, isn't going to ride upside down?
Seen this fly tied in michigan in usa and got browns and a nice 7lb steelhead on it a couple days ago
Awesome. Do you have any pictures of the fish caught? my email is info@ukflyfisher.com
This lure might well interest the tough brownies in Carsington and Roadford...or even in a northern river
Certainly might. Let me know if you get a chance to test it.
I'm going to try this in the bays in South Texas. See how those fish like it.
Let me know how you get on.
What brand of whip finisher are you using ? I've been looking for one like it.
It's just a cheapy unbranded one I believe. I couldn't get on with some of them and this one suits me.
Thanks mate, learned a lot! Good looking fly, Wonder what wild browns, here in Tasmania Australia, will think of it? Me thinks tight lines!
Brilliant lure
Tied a White one works
Just as good
The fly stealer must have been a member of the KFM (Kenyan Fly Mafia). That’s the name I’ve given these guys who continually try to contact me to purchase their flies. There must be a lot of them because I tell them that I’m not interested and that I tie several hundred dozen flies in a given year, but they keep trying. Question for the tyer: have you considered tying in small sizes on a jig hook ala Euro Style? You would likely have to switch to squirrel strips, but I imagine the pattern would be extremely effective. EDIT: I would certainly apply the dubbing with a dubbing loop. The body looks decent in the way the tyer would the dubbing on but the looseness of the dubbing will cause it to tear out after the fish’s teeth get ahold it. This will cause the over wing to loosen as well. Not a criticism, it’s just the way I would spin this up.
I've tied them on size 14 jig hooks with a 3.2 mm tungsten slotted bead with small mink strips, but I'm sure squirrel would work great. I haven't tried them on the rivers yet, but definitely keen too. Have you given them a go?
will try this to catch snakeheads..... thanks for sharing...
Hi Gareth………..Thank you for all your video’s.
I am finding them very enjoyable and informative to watch.
I am 80+ years and just getting back into Trout Flytying
After many years.
I have typed som Black Mamba flies but not sure if I have got
The proportions correct.
I have tied them on the same hook as you ( Fulling Mill Nymph
Size 8 )
My Crystal Flash tail is just over 1/2” in length and the Rabbitt
Zonker Strip measures overall 2”.
Can you please confirm these measurements or should they be
Slightly longer……Cannot remember tying this type of fly before.
Thanking you and please keep the video’s coming……🐟🐟🐟
Hi Gareth. As the snow is coming down hard this weekend I’m indoors watching your videos and tying up some flies. It appears that the majority of the flies you fish are of the streamer variety. Can I ask which knot you use most for streamers? Do you prefer a loop type knot or a knot tightened down to the hook eye?
Hi, I prefer a loop knot or a tucked blood knot. However this year I'll be learning the Trilene knot due to it being the strongest knot we can use with fluorocarbon. As for the flies I use, I use whatever the situation requires. Most of the time in the UK this is lures, but I do love dry fly and nymph fishing too. I'll be bringing out more videos this year than ever before going over a wide range of patterns, classic, modern and even a few of my own creations. Hope that helps. ATB Gareth
@@UkFlyFisher thanks Gareth. I’ve been dry fly fishing for a zillion years in the small high mountain streams of Colorado but I’ll be adding streamer fishing to my repertoire now that I’ve relocated to Idaho. It’s good to know what the experienced fishers prefer. Thank you for your responses. I’ll be learning the loop type knots now. :)
Super looking fly!
Thank you.
Mad skills, I'll be trying that. Cheers.
Thank you.
hi UkFlyFisher. looking like a very effective fly. As I understand it is first of all used in P&T. Any "costal experience" with it ? Ex. for seatrout??
yes, 2 customers do extremely well on the Estuary down south, for sea trout and bass. With another giving great reports following the tide in for big bass. I'll try and get out this year and give it a go myself. It's working on wild fish all over the world.
Paid off for me in fishing a heavily fished catch and release area.
Hi Gareth ... all the best for 2021. Just out of interest what is the net you use with the weighing handle on it in your vids? Looking to get one myself
Cheers thanks
It's a Macleans weigh net. They aren't cheap though. If I hadn't got it discounted i wouldn't have been able to afford it.
Ok thanks for that il look into it, also trying to order flys under custom order on your page. But it won’t let me basket some fly that are out of stock can you help cheers mate
@@gregsmith7319 Hi Greg, I'm taking custom orders at the moment. Just email a list of what you are after to info@ukflyfisher.com and I'll do a custom order for you. Kind Regards. Gareth
I realize this is a couple of years ago, but I’m curious what rod and line setup you use for 7+lb trout?
Hi Gareth
On this lure can you use 15mm black fritz instead of the Glister peacock dubbing ?
Thank you
Stephen
You certainly can. Will create a bulkier fly with a bit more movement.
I've always made extra flies for the guys I fish with and they do the same ,on a particular day we had been fishing all morning and decided to take a lunch break ,there were other fishermen around and this guy was eye balling most of our gear and asking what flies we were using and in a split second he stole 2 rods and several boxes of flies from some of the guys ,we got most of our stuff back 2 weeks later and he was arrested.
What kind of fur do you use/where do you find your sinker strips? P.S. What is the wt of the rod you use for casting it?
I use both my 4 weight and my 7/8 weight rods depending on how I'm fishing it. Have a good few videos of the fly in action. Zonker strips are from Blob & Buzzer
Thank you for this. I’m going to give this fly a try. Can I ask which head cement you use?
Veniards or Sally Hansens
@@UkFlyFisher Thank you sir. I appreciate the response. And again, thanks for this video. Very helpful. :)
