- See my easy and inexpensive method for making articulated shanks for all sizes of flies with few tools and materials. I also show how to attach trailing hooks and how to choose the best hook for the back. The wire I use is listed in the links below.

This is so awesome!! Thank you for sharing. I was so frustrated by how expensive those shanks are
Glad it was helpful!

Very straightforward and easy to follow. I will be making my own shanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Totally badass. Been wanting to tie my own thanks for making it so easy on the rest of us.
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful! Wish I'd seen it last week...my order including expensive shanks just arrived. If I find I enjoy tying articulated streamers and begin to use them up, or want different sizes, will definitely go this route. Thanks a bunch for showing us.
Best video out there on this topic! Definitely going to give this a try!

Thanks again Chris, best I've seen on the subject.

Glad it was helpful!
Thank you !
Quite informative! Thanks!
My pleasure!
308L from the welding supply store is the same stuff flymen uses. Light weight and doesn’t break your looper tool. .030
Perfekt video Thankyou Chris 🙏🙏
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent tutorial! Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Subbed😄
Thanks for the sub!
Nice
Put a bit foam on the hook then you won't stab your self with the hook point
I use a small piece of tubing.
Thanks for posting this. What kind of tying vice is are you using.
The vise in the video was produced by a tier named AK Best for a short amount of time in the late 90's. Most of my tying in other videos and in production is a Renzetti when I want rotary functions, or a Dyna-King, especially for bigger hooks and patterns.
I am wondering... could these shanks be made by using the wire in paper clips?
The wire in paper clips is too large of a diameter to form well, and by the time you straighten it out, you have created weak spots in the wire. Good question though!
@@chrismihulka-nwfishingstuf3852 Hi... Thank you for answering my question. It was just a thought but I guess it wasn't a good thought. Thanks to you... now I know. Really enjoyed your video. Just bought some pliers and a 1 step looper so I am getting ready to try making some shanks. Thanks again. U.S. Army, Ret. Texas
I've been using 20lb backing line for all my flies. Never had an Issue.
Could I use straightened paper clips for the articulated shanks.
I think they would rust quickly and ruin the fly.
Where can I find Malin Wilstabrite?
Amazon and ebay have it, Cabella 's and Bass Pro, and Offshore Angler has a good variety.
Could you do the samthing to make fly hooks?
The wire is too soft. Hooks are made with harder wire then hardened more through a heating and cooling process.
@@chrismihulka-nwfishingstuf3852 is that wire not able to be heat treated?
