    This film cemented why Green Goblin will always be Peter's greatest enemy. Unlike the other villains who treat Spiderman like he is just a pest in their way, Green Goblin's focus is entirely on Spiderman himself. He wants to hurt him, break him, like no one else, and he more or less achieves that in this film. He is Spiderman's Joker, a force of chaos and destruction that revels in evil.

    • @SpiderkillersInc
      @SpiderkillersInc Год назад +374

      True, but you forgot the why. Green Goblin in the Raimi films has an ideology; winners and losers. Some people are exceptional, the rest are here to support them. He acknowledges Spider-Man is exceptional like himself, yet cannot understand why he’d ever use his powers selflessly. He’s dismissive of that. So his fixation on Spider-Man comes down to him wanting to prove his ideology right. Spider-Man’s the only other exceptional person around, and if he’s not following Goblin’s ideals... what’s the point?

    • @Crichjo32
      @Crichjo32 Год назад +171

      @@SpiderkillersInc True, he has a twisted ideology, in that having god-like power gives you the right to do whatever you want, and other people are there only to worship you. It's the complete reverse of "with great power, comes great responsibility". The fact Spiderman keep resisting Goblin's offers, and continues to use his powers selflessly, drives Goblin even more insane. He takes the Joker motto of "all it takes is one bad day", and tries to hurt Peter personally, in order to bring him down to his level. He would have succeeded in No Way Home, if it wasn't for Tobey's Spiderman getting in the way.

      I really hate how they changed Green Goblin's character in this film entirely. He didn't have a split personality in the original Spider Man movie. It was stated at the beginning of the original movie before Norman turned into Green Goblin, that the serum's side effects were "Violence, aggression, and insanity". Meaning he was actually just insane. It's not like the serum created an entirely different personality. Norman was already madman before he even turned into Goblin, the serum's side effects only drove his madness even further to the point he would kill people without remorse. He didn't have a split personality, it was more like an "alter ego". Kinda like Walter White and his other "side"- Heisenberg. Or Clark Kent and his other "identity"- Superman.

    • @thatoscarguy9965
      @thatoscarguy9965 10 месяцев назад +66

      @@justarandomguywholikesanimethey likely adapted the serum to some extent since then before Norman used it and the stated side effects were of the best description they could give based on their perspective without actually experiencing anything personally. The mirror scene also seems to indicate pretty well that they’re two separate beings. The goblin also mentions in both films aspects of Norman’s personality that he recognizes and hates. It’s like an evil father and terrified son relationship between the two.

    The scene where Tobey stops Tom perfectly shows he's a completed character. He's killed the green goblin once before, and it made him lose a father figure, his best friend, and it ruined his life.
    20 years later and he sees a ghost of that same man is about to be killed by his glider again, but this time he has the experience and heart to stop it, and save Tom from suffering the same fate he did.
    It doesn't complete his character arc, that happened years ago over regretting his mistakes and wishing he could try again with a goblin cure this time. But it is Tom's chance to learn from his mistakes and from those that came before him.

      If you think this was written greatly than I don’t know what to tell you. So many lost potential. Doc Ock being the leader and creating the Sinister Six, but we had Doctor Strange interfering through the whole thing. Coming up with the plan to make them “normal” pretty pathetic. Norman just ending up being the main villain, it was just a total fan service of a movie without any actual progression to Tom’s Spidey. The movie ended with all that had happened like none of it ever happened. Waste. Now we have Tom Holland taking a break from acting. Like honestly they can’t get Spider-Man’s story properly done. Like was there any point in bringing in the Vulture and Mysterio? They had the opportunity to create something big in this movie especially with Toby and Andrew together. Yea cool movie, but not great at all. Total let down to me.

    I liked how Goblin isn’t just straight up overpowered by Peter, as even after the beating he got the Goblin appears relatively unscathed. This Peter has far more fighting experience against stronger opponents than Tobey’s Peter (who the Goblin is used to) and it makes sense he’d get the upper hand through skilful use of his webs and acrobatics. Yet, nothing can change the fact that May is dead, and that (thanks primarily to Goblin’s actions) Peter has to be forgotten by everyone he holds dear. This film has many issues IMO, but the characters aren’t among them, and in particular Defoe has not only maintained his status as the GOATed Goblin but actually surpassed his prior outing. He has honoured the Goblin’s legacy as one of those perfect villains who manages to win even when he loses.

    I know it's been said, but you can tell the reason why Willem just stepped right back into this role like there wasn't 15 years separating him since the last time he played him, means not only was he never bitter about it (like some uppity "ar-teest" people are because I have no idea why), he actively was anticipating a chance to do it one more time and practices in his spare time for shits and giggles

    I like how Joker is a villain worth seeing actors try and succeed in different ways pulling it off. Wilem Defoe and Green Goblin is tough to beat and can't see many avenues for other actors to give it a shot. That would be cool

    I swear Green Goblin and Joker are probably the 2 most well written villians in any comic book universe.
    I mean out of all the superhero movies the best performances have been 2 jokers (ledger and Nicholson), Green Goblin (Defoe) and Magneto (Ian McKlellan).

    Spider-Man 2 may have been the best movie in Raimi’s trilogy, but I always loved the first movie more, because by God Dafoe’s Goblin is the GOAT. And he proved it in No Way Home. In a movie with all three live action Spider Men sharing the screen he manages to still steal the whole show.

    This movie is a testament as to why I think Green Goblin is one of the goats when it comes to supervillians in general. He woke up, was smart enough to realize he was in another universe, immediately decides to cause complete chaos in that universe, psychologically torments a different Spiderman that isn't even his, and fucking kills off a main character.

    Something I just realized about Goblin over how smart he is, he has total control of Norman here, which just makes him so much scarier.
    In 'Spider-Man' (2002), Goblin would phase in and out almost like in spurts, where you couldn't really tell who's in control most of the time, which is scary, but allowing for Norman to still feel in control and safe when he's talking.
    Here, Norman is just a tool, where Goblin will literally use him as a puppet for his endeavors, so when you see Norman talking, you can't tell if it's actually Norman or just Goblin pretending, but you know it's the Goblin's intent to let him talk, so you'll think there's no more danger.
    That brings a total new layer to the character, because you think you know when Willem's playing each one, but the truth is that you can't.
