In my opinion, you listen to the studio to get all the nuances, delicacies, intricacies, craftsmanship, and perfect production. You listen to and/or watch the live to get the exploration, improvisation, and the perfectly imperfect explosion of greatness. Both sides of the coin are phenomenal; it just depends on the mood you're in.
When I was younger I was very drawn towards all the bootlegs.. I've heard this song Every Which Way they've done it. Nowadays I always go back to that studio version... maybe it was closer to when it was first made, the fact that it actually used the acoustic guitar, but there's something of a lament in his tone that added to it.
Precisely. At first (long ago) I didn’t particularly care for the live versions because they were “different” and had a different feel. Now, I love and appreciate them both, and which I prefer depends on my mood.
As much as I love studio versions, as a vocalist for a blues/rock band, nothing comes close to the authenticity and passion of a live performance. I will opt for "live" every time as it lays bare the roots and soul of the band without any fancy modifications, and Zep do it so well. A classic song by the greatest band ever to grace a stage.
@@barsandbarbells2022 me: pressing play as fast as I can to see my "Rock God Husband Jimmy" killing it "Kashmir" has been my favorite song my entire life. Robert Plant IS the Golden God of Rock... that flowing golden hair... stage presence.. and of course voice... to think all of this music coming from just 4 musicians,,, pure talent!!
Great reaction, guys! I think the thing to keep in mind is that LZ was a very improvisational band live... they rarely played a song the same way twice. So, yeah, when watching you just go with the flow, and don't worry that it doesn't match the studio "perfection" exactly... rock on!
At 63 Led Zeppelin is my Ultimate Rock ! Heart was amazing but what truly made it magical and soulful was that Jason Bonhom taking his Dads seat at the Drums❤❤❤
When the Levee Breaks is one of the most hypnotic songs I've ever heard. From Led Zeppelin IV, my favorite album. Originally written in 1929, this showcases Bonham in all his "feeling" glory. Robert Plant is rarely more haunting. Gotta do it!
My mother saw them play live as a teenager. They song got very popular again years later in the 80s. This song reminds me of junior high dances. We'd listen to this getting ready, then this was always the last song played at the end of the dance.
Check out "Kashmir" live from Celebration Day 2007. One of the greatest live recordings I have ever seen. The concert is also in the guiness book of records, for the most ticket requests for a single concert. 20 Million people wanted to go there.
Its great but it's missing John's drumming. Led Zeppelin were not Led Zeppelin without John Bonham. His son is a good drummer in his own right, but he's not his dad. Robert knows that. That's the reason he didnt want to reform Zeppelin. Knebworth 1979 is a perfect example of John's drumming on Kashmir. He drives the song.
Every year this song is in the Netherlands, in the top 5 of the TOP 2000, on radio live. Between Christmas and New year, 24/7, 2000 pop, rock, balad songs al choosen by listeners. The voting starts always early December. Led Zeppelin is always in the top 5 of this famous music list.
I loved the studio version for 40 years, and then I saw this performance video. Now I prefer this. The complexity and nuance is really incredible. The lads at peak power. Love it.
Saw them in 1975 and 77. When you hear them start this a thrill goes thru the whole crowd and it gets quiet. And as the song goes on you know the solo is coming. No other concert moment like it.
Very true! I saw LZ in 1974, Page and Plant in 1994, Robert Plant in 2009, and Robert Plant with Allison Krauss (great version of Gallows Pole) in June 2023. The 1974 concert still ranks as the best I've ever seen in nearly 50 years of concerts!
The Celebration Day Reunion Concert and performance of Kashmir...is simply amazing. They are spot on, and this took place when they were much older..in their late 50's and 60s, I believe! Maybe even older, I'm not sure. But this performance proves that age is just a number! They even have Jason Bonham, the son of the bands original and only drummer John Bonham, playing the drums, and he kills it! Just a magnificent performance over all and a must see.
I saw them 2x on this tour! Robert Plant was the epitome of a rock god. His confidence on the stage here was stunning. And the way they backlit him to make him look ethereal, peak vocal talent - mind blowing. And mesmerizing guitar work by Page, and of course Bonham and Jones, although they’re less visible here. This is a stunning performance.
I saw them at Tampa stadium Tampa, Fla. back in the day! They were rock gods to us back then! We had no cable TV or internet back then. The music was everything and we had the best back then!
Daniel~ Jimmy Page performed "Rumble" by Link Wray. It was a delight to see Jimmy pay tribute to the iconic Link Wray. "Rumble" was released in 1958 and was banned in several radio markets in the US, as "rumble" was a slang term for a gang fight. The record was the only instrumental song ever banned in the United States. As to Jimmy's electric guitar solo here on "Stairway", in my expert opinion, it's the finest electric guitar solo in the history of rock and roll. It could be argued that Jimi Hendrix's solo at the Fillmore East on New Year's Eve, 1969, when he played the other-worldly live version of "Power To Love" is even better, but I feel it's a matter of "set and setting". Both are demonstrations of tremendous cosmic genius. Two enormously gifted musicians at their galactic zenith. I'm quite certain everything is predetermined, as Einstein stated. It would be very difficult to imagine this planet without Jimmy and Jimi. How dull, drab, boring, mundane and pointless this planet would have been without their stellar musical contributions. ⚛️
"Kashmir" live from Celebration Day Concert. Their first live performance after 28 years and also their last. Epic performance. 20 million people tried to get tickets for the Concert.
Hi .. I was at that concert sitting in the 9th row orchestra at MSG in 73 when they were filming for TSRTS . I was 16yrs old then , now 67 . You guys can't truly understand the power and Soulfulness Led Zeppelin puts into ther concert without being there. You see & feel ever note they make u feel like you are the only person there & Plant is singing too you . Jimmy Page makes u feel every bend & cord he's playing . Zeppelin the Greatest Band ever .
If you two are fans of Led Zeppelin, I’d highly recommend listening to Kashmir by them. You won’t be disappointed… trust me! Thanks for the reactions guys!!
Remember, these guys have played this song uncounted times before this, and they have to change it up a little to keep themselves from going crazy playing the exact same thing night after night after night.
If you want to see them preform live when they are older and see how amazing they could've still been if John hadn't passed, then you have to watch them preform "Kashmir Live at Celebration Day" with John Bonham's son on drums. Truly an amazing performance.
I saw the same show in Los Angeles at the fabulous forum. I was seven rows from center stage on an aisle seat . The band looked 10 feet tall. It was my first big rock ‘n’ roll concert, and I’ll never forget it. I saw them again in 1977…
Sometimes thoughts are misgiven: "and I think you can see that..." Plant sang that because of confusion between him and the cameraman. Those drum fills during the solo are crazy amazing.
Absolutely mesmerized and in love with Led Zeppelin. I'm 74 years old and I can remember distinctly. Every moment of listening to Zeppelin for the first time on LSD, which was the Zeppelin album, back in '69!! Hi Phil & Samantha, as a former Musician this is one of the best, no matter what genre your into, to just think a band like Heart had to influenced by Led Zeppelin by their Artistry and Commitment to Music since they all were young to fill stadiums, and the World, with people who Love their Music
I saw Plant and Page play in 1997, in Albany NY. 3 hours long, 2.5 hours of straight up Led Zep. This concert here was not long after Jimmy had fresh healed from broken fingers from slamming his hand in a car door.

John Paul played a bass recorder on the opening bars. Brian Jones played one on Ruby Tuesday as well. It’s a beautiful sounding instrument. Though to replicate its sound in a live setting, he used what is called a Mellotron. A keyboard thing that has loops of tape inside to mimic many different sounds. He moves over to a Fender Rhodes electric piano for the second part of the tune - and bass pedals.
Trust me with bands like this...at the concert, you want the best songs to be like this because the amazing songs will last longer!!! Page tends to be sloppy live in soloing at times but live is live!
It would be hard to recreate the studio version live, there's at least 3 guitars on it - an acoustic, a 12 string electric and Page's trusty old telecaster. The double-neck did cover some of the ground with an electric 12 string and 6 string together in one guitar but they always offered up a great alternative version live and improvised through the template of all their songs to make every performance unique for the audience. If anything, Heart's performance was closer to the studio version, but they did have at least 3 guitarists doing the work of one man.
For next live Led Zeppelin reaction, highly suggest Kashmir, from Knebworth (earlier in career), as opposed to reunion version called Celebration. Incredible.
Great reaction. Kashmir and When the Levee Breaks are two other “take you on a journey” songs. I’d recommend starting with the studio version and then moving to the live stuff, so you can listen to the baseline track first
The cheese shredder Jimmy page,I've seen Jimmy twice in the 80s he's something else,I've seen plant and Srv opened talk about a show Zeppelin rules isn't a term it's a fact
The album version captures a band that actually retired to a rural part of the UK for inspiration (a very British folk age) and then, through the ignition of electric guitar and a kind of European classical sensibility, escalated it beyond that. Or, at least, that's how it seems to me.
Hey, Thank You first for this version. Super Fab reactions and fun. Yes, "Black Dog" is freaking amazing. If you have not yet, even on both your own time it doesn't have to be on here. Please go and look into, "Bonham" Listen/Look in on, "Guilty & Wait For You" You will understand why I put this out there at this point yes, ok. It is the son of John Bonham's band. Peace On Ya PS: Must be the videos

That guitar is insane
Have you ever seen a performance where the singer is so absolutely in control of the stage? He was the original "Rock God"!!!!!
Freddy Mercury every time he was performing
Ramble On has got to hit your list.
Jimmy's no shredder, he has style/class and taste, not to mention talent...he's way above these half wit "shredders".

My brother saw them in Seattle just before John Bonham passed away and Robert Plant asked.... does anybody remember forests.

At the time the UK was riven by strikes and power cuts so we were sitting the house with candles. I think that's what he meant.
Stairway to Heaven is considered to be one of the top song ever made!

There is no way to compare THIS version to the studio OR to Hearts version. This stands by itself in its own universe.........
