Gettry's Mother and Father met in Nazi concentration camps in Germany. They wrote this song for Getty's mother. I really appreciate that you take Rush music seriously. Big thumbs up. Good job!

I've seen interviews with Geddy's mother and she is a delight. There is no doubt that Alex's family was affected by the horrors of WW2 as well. His birth name is Aleksander Zivojinovic, which is Serbian, and a direct translation of his last name is Lifeson (son of life) and his parents immigrated to Canada from Yugoslavia. There were lyrics that Neil wrote that never became songs. Geddy said if the words didn't fit his mouth, they agreed not to develop them into music. Neil definitely wrote this song for his friend and his family, and it hits hard. These guys might be the tightest friends who ever lived. They shut the band down when Neil was devastated by the death of his daughter in a car accident and his wife's passing about a year later in 1998, and waited until he was ready to come back. They weren't even sure he would. Following his death, they have refused to replace him to carry on. I've never seen a better and truer love between friends.

Geddy went with his mother and siblings to a holocaust memorial at Auschwitz where they were guests of the German government and met the prime minister. Geddy said it was the first time in her life that his mother felt that she had won the war and defeated the Nazis.

I hope you have a chance to read Geddy's book My Effin Life, where chapter 3 includes a harrowing account of what his parents endured during the Holocaust, and pages 284, 397, and 443 recall three separate incidences where the memories of those experiences deeply affected him. These stories are a powerful reminder that we all have a responsibility to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again.

    You are a wise man.
Neils' lyrics are a key component of every Rush song.
On the instrumentals, he says it with his drums.
    So much talent.

Great reaction!! People have told you the story of Geddys parents horrifying experience! But his family and other survivors literally thought that everyone in the world was dead and they were the last one left alive!! Very emotional song! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!

I gained a very deep appreciation for this song after visiting Auschwitz in 1994. The *heaviest* experience I've ever had in my 59 years - EVERYBODY on the planet should go there...or one of the other camps :/

Neil says in the Presto album liner notes-or tour program:
“Life is like the rock, paper, scissors game. “Every answer is not always right-but each one sometimes is.” I think that’s what he said, and not sure if it’s his quote or someone else’s but it was the first time I’ve ever heard of it. #RIPNEP 🤘🖖✌️

This is such a powerful song, and Geddy delivers the vocals with such emotion. Both of his parents met as teenagers in the concentration camps, and miraculously, they both survived, including Auschwitz. Geddy said in a recent interview that his father had also survived a death march. His parents reunited as a displaced person's camp after the war, where they married, and then moved to Canada to start a family. It is truly a miracle that Geddy and his siblings are here!

Politics was created as a last ditch effort to prevent war.
    People are dismissive of politics.
War is not dismissed so easily.

I appreciate your honesty and after reaction commentary about the whole political thing. Religion is another and people have such a deep connection with these two things that there’s no convincing them that their way is the only way and to just respect others for their own beliefs or positions.

I know many fans did not care for this album. I am not one of them. Actually it is my favorite Rush album. It is way darker and very interesting to listen to. There is not a bad song on that album. I know most didn't care for the synths and the fact that Alex really didn't have an opportunity to shine so to speak but actually his presence on the album is very important it just isn't flashy.

When this album came out, I was on a 2112 to moving pictures high, this was weird but I still heard the tallent. As I grew older, I appreciate all of their stuff even if it was not "my thing". They are PROG. progressive, always changing as we all have to do to get through life and for that, they are to me as many others, the soundtrack to our lives.

This song is a very strange experience for Rush fans., or for me at any rate. On the one hand, it is one of the coolest riffs that the band came up with and the song really rocks. On the other hand, it is a boat really dark, depressing topic. It’s like, ‘Yay! The holocaust! Awesome?”

The inner sleeve of the album Grace Under Pressure had a portrait photo of them posing together with very very short hair for the first probably ever. Their keeping up with the times both musically and stylistically was really shocking to the older original fans, but really solidified their music with the times, even more for new fans. This song represented the 80's cold war for me. personally.
