A small but important missed, fun fact: The reaper leviathans are actually sometimes predated upon by the sea dragons. This is why you find reaper carcasses in the lava zone as the dragons drag them down so much that the pressure and heat kills them. Along with the dragon's own bites of course. :)
2:10 fun fact! It's been theorized that the biome that the Aurora crashed on and decimated used to be a reaper breeding ground. It would explain why there are no reaper eggs, and why there are so many reapers surrounding the crash site.
So it means that the Aurora by crashing there didn't just doom to extinction the Sea Dragon but also the Reaper Leviathan as well... unless they find a new breeding area...
The scary part about the reaper is not the creature itself, is where it can be found. Murky waters, low visibility, you can't see far. Dragon leviathans never scared me, they are plain visible at all times.
Ghosties' behaviours freak me out (wiggle wiggle but super fast), but that's it. Dragons are dangerous, but endgame leviathans. You won't come across them until you're used to Ghosts. Use a grapple arm, stay alert, and don't dilly-dally in the ILZ & ALZ, and you're golden. You can find Reapers as soon as you spawn in. They provide a boundary out of sheer fear that never really fades. They are the ONLY creatures that cause the PDA to QUESTION YOUR ACTIONS.
Another very fun fact about Reapers is that they are one of the very few creatures in Subnautica to not have bioluminescence, making them much harder to spot in dark murky waters as compared to most other threats in the game.
First time i saw a Reaper, threw my keyboard across the room as it jumpscared me as i was below 80 HP (the jumpscare animation plays out if your're below 80HP)
Me too, thought it was a good idea to take a nice little swim to see whats behind the aurora when i started out. Went on the right side, just beige, sand colored water with no bottom in sight, thought this is no problem. Had earphones on in a dark room, didnt know anything about the Leviathan. You can guess what happened next BAAM a leviathan screaming grabs me. I can easily say its one of the worst jump scares ive had in my life, just threw off the headphones, had to exit the room to calm down, heart beating it was horrendous. I played some more after that until i saw one in the distance once and decided the game wasnt for me.
I loaded up the game and instantly wanted to swim to the Aurora. That was my mistake. As soon as I saw and heard the Reaper Leviathan, I exited the game. Similar circumstances I suppose 😅
I had found the safe passage to the Aurora pretty easily (Straight to it from safe shoals, then hug the wall until you reach the gap in the front), but want to explore the area a little more, so I used my seaglide to swim around to the back. Heard the road as night was falling, jumped up onto the engine and stayed on top of it until morning, then went to the small patch of dune next to the ship as fast as I could, turned around just as I got there to find this giant creature thrashing in the water. Utterly terrifying experience, 10/10.
I love how before the game was released, someone had the great idea to give the reaper black void eyes. This one change turn this creepy creature into the most terrifying creature in indie game history.

I liked putting anti-reaper kits in the time capsules. A stasis gun battery, and a heat knife. And really, that's all you need to kill these things. My message on them was, "Don't fear the Reaper." 😁
Yea the pov in the game is kind of trash, so everything looks a lot smaller than you might think. Same problem in ark survival evolved as well, people don't realize how big everything is until you have a good object of reference right next to it
I don't think the reaper lacks pupils tbh. With four eyes that big, it seems more like the blackness of the eyes ARE the pupils, big enough to span the entire visible eye ball, sort of like a great white shark and other animals that need to take in as much light as possible to see in dark environments.
Maybe they produce babies similar to sharks where they give live birth. Also if you do look closey at the reapers eyes, they do have pupils with a deep brown around the pupil.
You know, the fact that its roar is enough to make the most experienced divers shiver is true. Most experienced divers hunt reapers for sport, they shiver in excitement.
I wonder if the tune will change in the third game when we have no stasis rifle (it is assumed to be same planet, though not 100% guaranteed yet to my knowledge). Devs had said they regretted not being able to balance the first game properly, which is why they didn't straight up remove stasis, but the removal of it in below zero is a sure sign they don't want anything to do with that kind of power again. So the question is. Without stasis, how many of these "experienced divers" will be hunting reapers in the next game? With that said, no idea if there even will be reapers, but as mentioned in the video, the devs are fully aware how much of an impact on sales it alone had, and below zero simply got marked down heavily for not being anywhere near as thrilling (or scary) overall. So surely there will be reapers again. Guess we will find out in the next year or so what they have been doing

Reapers are actually known for amazing hearing AND sight! If you look closer reaper eyes actually have a sclera and a pupil, the pupil is just so large you’d think the eyes are either holes or fake eyes
I think I know how Reapers reproduce. If we look at the Reaper’s skin, it is smooth and has no scales. Furthermore, their tail fins are not in the traditional fish position, but rather in a position akin to a whale or dolphin. It doesn’t have gills on the sides of its head either, which would imply that it either breathes air or filters oxygen in the water through other means. It can therefore be argued that Reapers are mammals like dolphins or whales (only much more aggressive and predatory), and as such it is possible that Reapers reproduce through live births, which is why we don’t see any Reaper eggs. However, should this theory be wrong and Reapers are not in fact mammals, they can still likely give live births similar to most species of shark, seeing as how the Reaper bears similarities to sharks in terms of behavior and appearance(aside from the mandibles, four eyes, and head).
i've always interpreted health in games as a percentage of your body left intact, so the reaper just chomps and removes basically everything but your arms & head.
I've had these things chase me in my dreams twice: once in the crash zone, where I hid in a small tunnel, and the other across the entire map of Below Zero (even though I had the fastswim AND fly cheats on and should have been out of it's range in two seconds. It also kept chewing on me as I tried to get into my base, though somehow I didn't die.) And then the third dream had a Shadow Leviathan instead of a Reaper.
Sea dragons are way better.idk why they make them so scary. They are easy to kill woth stasis and knife. Only at the beginning they are scary when they grab your seamoth. Those seamoth eater sea serpents.Just dont go behind the Aurora and it will be fine.
Note: Reapers are far more likely to give you a bad time if you have a vehicle. This is why, or at least until I get the perimiter defense system for the seamoth, that my vehicles stay a safe distance from Reapers. As a lone diver with a seaglide, it's far more difficult for them to actually make a hit. I had a close call when I was out in the dunes looking for stuff. I never really understood this logic, because even in a seamoth, all you have to do is go straight up and towards it and it will not hit you on the first pass. Meanwhile you are moving around much faster and getting stuff done sooner. Bottom line is that their AI is stupid ever since the full release nerfs. They use to be an actual threat, and I would argue most of their game sales came when the game was way harder in early access. Anyway, game still fun, but they really nerfed the crap out of leviathans. Much smaller patrol paths. Much more narrow line of sight. Longer disengages before seeking again. Still remember the day when I had a boxing match with one using my Prawn Suit. That day my Prawn Suit was named "Apex Hunter" after I landed that final punch.
I have a theory that the reaper is an aquatic mammal. For one, they have no eggs, suggesting they give live birth. For two, their skin is canonically similar to human skin, as the PDA says when you scan their fossils. Hence why they can’t handle the hot water in the Lava Zone. For three, they’re known to swim to the surface and jump out of the water, which if my theory is correct would be for breathing.
So either I had a bug or what happened to me was very rare. My first encounter with a reaper, I was in my seamoth and thought I got stuck on something as I couldn't move. I had power, my engine made noise, and everything appeared to be working. Then in my periphery I see the reaper circle around to the front and grab me. Can the reaper grab you with its tail?
Dont Worry i have a total of 10 hours by now in subnautica when i unlocked the stasis rifle and ive killed 2 reapers by now The hardest part isnt fighting the reapers its convincing urself to go into the water.
While it is true that reaper leviathans use echolocation lore wise, just keep in mind that in-game they work like any other hostile fauna. If they get aggroed when you’re close, they attack.
I was luckier my first time encountering a reaper leviathan when I first played subnautica. I already knew about them from discovering the game through watching people play it, so I knew what to expect. (Still haven’t beaten the game cause I’m a wuss) I’m always cautious in reaper territory and that’s the only leviathan I’ve encountered in game.
when i was olaying subnautica on suvival a few days ago, i got jumpscared after seeing the reaper, i didnt even save and im stuck back again without the radatiom suit, sea glide, knife and seamoth
The Reaper is basically the only reason I've never played this game for myself, lmao. Sea Dragons, Ghosts and such are easy to deal with. Knowing there's 25 of those... things... on the loose and basically able to eat me at any time though? Genuinely terrifying.

Help aletho a reaper followed me to the safe shallows and is not levaing me alone i have a screen shot on me ps4 😅 Also how does 4546b's animals survive i never fixed the drive core😅
I just think the reaper looks silly. It's face is starkly humanoid and completely out of place in an underwater setting, but it's not even humanoid enough to be unsettling. It honestly just looks like Eustace Bagge from Courage the Cowardly Dog. One of the worst designed monsters I've seen, and such a disappointment next to how cool most of the other creatures are, not to mention the landscapes (seascapes?).
I hope the Sea Dragon never goes extinct. Because if it did, there would be more Reapers on the surface to contend with. At least the Sea Dragons drag a few Reapers into the Lava Zones to boil and eat them. On the other hand, if there were too many Sea Dragons, the Reapers might be in danger of going extinct, and then both would go extinct because one is the only practical source of food for the other. If the Sea Dragons could eat the Ghost Leviathans, why do they bother with the Reapers, who are much further away from home? I’m thinking the Ghost Leviathan’s flesh is probably poisonous because of its incandescence.
I have an idea, what if when the reapers reproduce they lay their eggs within the sand of the crash zone and dunes. They could dig holes with their mandibles and then lay in the sand.
Their echolocation isn't just fun fluff, it's represented by their behaviour in-game. If you linger in their territory for too long they will bee-line for you even if you've stayed silent and out of their line of sight.
During my hunt for it, even when I froze it in place with my stasis rifle, it was so scary to see it. Which is why I tend to avoid looking directly at it face and attack it's body
The data entry in game and the wiki say that the reaper's roar is like sonar. Has anyone actually tested the limits of that? Like can the reaper see you with it if you're behind an obstacle, or laying flat on the ocean floor?
I have a theory what if the reapers are actually smart but not smart enough to understand why there’s a giant ship that’s destroying there home so that’s why there so violent so if it wasn’t there they Mabye wouldn’t attack us because we destroyed there home

Dont Worry i have a total of 10 hours by now in subnautica when i unlocked the stasis rifle and ive killed 2 reapers by now The hardest part isnt fighting the reapers its convincing urself to go into the water.
Nothing in Subnautica scares me
0:09 wait, how? How did it increase sales whatsoever?
marketing, social media buzz, that sort of thing. :3
While it is true that reaper leviathans use echolocation lore wise, just keep in mind that in-game they work like any other hostile fauna. If they get aggroed when you’re close, they attack.
the subnautica creature documentary
today’s topic: The Reaper Leviathan
i kill them with gasopod farts
I was luckier my first time encountering a reaper leviathan when I first played subnautica. I already knew about them from discovering the game through watching people play it, so I knew what to expect. (Still haven’t beaten the game cause I’m a wuss) I’m always cautious in reaper territory and that’s the only leviathan I’ve encountered in game.
Great video captures! These things have caused me so much anxiety over the years.
when i was olaying subnautica on suvival a few days ago, i got jumpscared after seeing the reaper, i didnt even save and im stuck back again without the radatiom suit, sea glide, knife and seamoth
My favourite hugger
The Reaper is basically the only reason I've never played this game for myself, lmao. Sea Dragons, Ghosts and such are easy to deal with. Knowing there's 25 of those... things... on the loose and basically able to eat me at any time though? Genuinely terrifying.
The reaper leviathan is blind 1:02
I feel like Reaper mating would be like praying mantis mating. The female eats the male after mating. Reapers just seem metal that way.
If the United States Space Force Sees the Reaper Leviathan
USSF asks USN To Investigate The Planet To Take On The Reapers
USS Burke(DDG-57) and USS Ohio(SSATN-726)
Help aletho a reaper followed me to the safe shallows and is not levaing me alone i have a screen shot on me ps4 😅
Also how does 4546b's animals survive i never fixed the drive core😅
The eyes are all massive pupil, so it probably has excellent night and low visibility vision. This tracks with where the reapers are found
I have an idea, what if when the reapers reproduce they lay their eggs within the sand of the crash zone and dunes. They could dig holes with their mandibles and then lay in the sand.
0:00 Pause.
Reaper: HEARD YOU TALKING SHIT!
*TF2 Meet the team intro* Meet the Reaper
Can't salvage the cyclops wrecks behind the aurora and the lifepod there because of it
Ive had total 10 hours by now and ive proudly killed 2 reapers by now Every Im on my first play through right now
Their echolocation isn't just fun fluff, it's represented by their behaviour in-game. If you linger in their territory for too long they will bee-line for you even if you've stayed silent and out of their line of sight.
During my hunt for it, even when I froze it in place with my stasis rifle, it was so scary to see it. Which is why I tend to avoid looking directly at it face and attack it's body
0:41 the start to donuts
My favorite leviathan
"Assesment: Extreme Threat, Avoid At All circumstance" unless your fearless
The data entry in game and the wiki say that the reaper's roar is like sonar. Has anyone actually tested the limits of that? Like can the reaper see you with it if you're behind an obstacle, or laying flat on the ocean floor?
Love this
Thanks for watching as always original_name!
I rememeber even now, first time i meet Reaper, swimming close to aurora and i see a Shadow in sand and when i look Up i saw ☠☠☠☠
I have a theory what if the reapers are actually smart but not smart enough to understand why there’s a giant ship that’s destroying there home so that’s why there so violent so if it wasn’t there they Mabye wouldn’t attack us because we destroyed there home
😶me 🤔🤗others
I wonder if this thing's poisonous when you eat it because it looks like a giant moving crab stick
Go to his ghost leviathan documentary and the comment I did for context on this, once the mod is done I’m gonna do an adorable arena fight between a wisp and a reapling
Realistically the Reapers would all starve to death, there’s nothing big enough it can consistently hunt
Hey can you try to contact the people who made subnautica and ask them to make every creature in the game have eggs including and below zero and have the skeletons come back to life at the end of the game and you get to see them and scan them and get their eggs
this thing is the only thing stopping me from actually beating the game
What, going to the ship?
@@someone-ji2zb already been to the ship, just have an irrational fear that their gonna be right beyond the murky depths, just out of my field of view.
@@JustComradeV2 I am not sure what else you have seen or done, but i will say there are things you can get that will help
Though nothing will eliminate that fear of a three dimensional attack tbh lol
If you ever thought that your first encounter with the reaper was bad, I was high when I cruising and saw that shit in front of me.
The first time a leviathan reaper attacked me, it took 80 life from my seamoth😅
fun fact tha t u missed abou t the reaper its blind it uses echolocation and its blind so when u hear him you are being chased or he is coming for u edit:ok u said about it but when you where saying about his look u sed that he can see you
Reapers are the reason i played subnautica its my favorite creature i even built base around the aurora to be around one her name is gabriela
And 30 minutes before I watched this I killed one.
Got the game a few days ago. Just ran into one of these and he fucked up my Seamoth
1:37 you can see whites at the back of its eyes so I think it’s just got enormous pupils
Can you make a shadow leviathan documentary?
You could be expecting the reaper to jump out, and it still scares you. I remember a good scare I got from a reaper a while back.
