Fun fact : Paul Torgal (Leader of the Degasi and head of the Torgal corp) got eliminated by a crab squid when following Maida, when she was taken away by a Reaper
The Warper is one of my most feared and respected enemies in any video games- Seeing it out of the corner of my eyes while driving, that horrible sound, the way they just SHOW UP unexpectedly? And the fact that they can just dump you into the open ocean around you. The leviathan is big and aggressive, sure, but the warper has intelligence which scares me more than the big blind bad guy. Instantly makes me shiver for whatever reason seeing it start b-lining for me.
I've always found that the one reason the Reaper is so much scarier than the rest of the hostile leviathans is its appearance. In all honesty, the Ghost Leviathans scare me more with their threat to the player rather than their appearance, and I honestly do not find the Sea Dragon very scary at all. Both of those lose their scariness factor with how "sci-fi" they are, if that makes sense. Basically, they just tend to look more cool than scary. But the thing about the Reaper is that it looks fleshy, fishy, and more realistic in the sense of its design. That, to me, makes it a lot scarier.
I think the thing that makes the reapers scary for me is their roar. Especially when you hear it very faintly the distance and you know one is not too far away.
For me, it's down to several factors: - They inhabit areas of the world that are usually murky and/or hard to see far off in, meaning that you usually won't see them until they're right on top of you, - They're the most aggressive Leviathan out there, and there are a crap ton of them to find (whereas the Ghosts and Sea Dragons are limited in population) - The roar is just so much more terrifying, because you can usually hear the roar long before you'll ever see the damn things, and because of the implications that it can see you if you can hear it. I could go on, but the point is that they may not be the top dogs, but damn do they deserve to be if that's how much fear they can put into you.
Totally agree, Ghosts dangerous but so beautiful, Reefbacks are docile and majestic, Sea Treaders are chill, Sea Emperor gives me the heebie jeebies but we never encounter one in combat, Sea Dragon is honestly just corny-AF. It's in a well-lit area, its eyes are hilarious, its animations are bad--easily my least-favorite leviathan. Then you have "baby" leviathans like the Chelicerate that are freaky looking but ultimately too small to be scary once you've encountered a "real" leviathan. But the Reaper, oh man. It just looks so real, like you said. It looks like it could live in OUR oceans on Earth. That's why it's so scary. Other than the Reapers, Warpers obviously creep me out but they don't have that realism (and also once you're cured, they stop attacking/teleporting you). But still, nothing compares to Big Red. The Reaper is one of the most beautiful creatures in the game to me... and easily the scariest. I wish they'd put the Shadow Leviathan from BZ into SN. It had such a creepy, cool design that immediately made my heart start pounding on-sight. Add to that the fact that these SOBs can swim fast as hell and--unlike the Reaper--can turn on a dime, and you've got a recipe for terror. Would love to see Shadows in SN. Also wish we'd see more Leviathans hunting prey and fighting each other.
Fair point Im probably gonna sound stupid but for killing a leviathan we are not awarded so well in game like it would be cool to cut them open for meat and stuff
Seriously, it was so calming to see them for the first time, as I was worried whatever that massive shape I saw moving would attack me: but no, just some humble tripod bois
It won't make a mad dash towards you unless you are near it though. Instead it will slowly circle around behind you so it can make extra sure you shit your pants when it does Usain Bolt its way towards your ass
@@4ardW0rKINGbarn1CAL If we had to be precise, what I said is not entirely correct: in fact, the Reaper's roar serves to make the player understand that he is in the vicinity of the creature itself, so as to be warned before ending up in its jaws.
I like how while showcasing the sea dragon Leviathan he’s just vibing without a reinforced diving suit Also, after awhile warpers are less scary and much more annoying
I know she's not technically an enemy, but the Sea Emperor at the end gave me the biggest jumpscare I had in the entire game. Not to mention that it outright towers over every other creature in the entire game.
@@mariovalentino824 No, not technically. The sea emperor has no gender, just like every other creature on the planet. She just sounds female because she can read your mind, and she figured that it would be more comforting to sound like his mother. That's also how she learned how to speak english.
It's called the curse of the completionist, lol. "I know ghost and reaper leviathans are deadly and hard to escape, but STOP MOVING AND LET ME SCAN YOU!" Sea dragon leviathans are in the middle of a volcano. Your character's practically melting alive and you're just swimming around trying to freeze a dragon before whipping out your scanner.
Ghost Leviathans are my Favourite Subnautica Enemies, I love how creepy they look and their screech is hellish enough to send shivers down even the most experienced Player's spines.
They’re my favorite as well. Mostly because of the ghost like appearance. I like the reaper leviathan mostly because of how they remind me of an oarfish.
I once dodged a reaper and right after, a warper teleported me out of my seamoth right there with the reaper next to me. Scariest moment I've had in the game.
Tied with the Ghost. Similar reasons. If you can hear it you're too close. If you can hear it it's coming for you. Hearing it. Just hearing it. You can't see it until suddenly you can. No matter what you're in you're not safe.
@@duddude321 I had one right next to me the other day, instead of attacking it was just going around in circles so I drove off in my seamouth. Still tho it's the roar of the Reaper and the way it kills you that I find terrifying.
A touch of good news about the Reapers: that whole business about the roar being used as echolocation is thankfully just flavour text in the PDA. In-game, it doesn't actually work that way. Reapers are territorial, but they won't actively hunt you down just because you're within range to hear it. I also find it interesting that the Sea Dragon fits a lot of the description of the biblical Leviathan mentioned in the book of Job.
I always thought the sea treader and reefback leviathans as oddly beautiful. Breathtaking design, the strangely wonderful sounds that they make (they’re scary when you don’t know they’re peaceful, but you’re perspective shifts once you’ve been around them for a while). They are pack creatures but also quite massive. There’s nothing like seeing a pack in the distance and then swimming over and vibing with them.
From the fauna of that planet, their take on this topic would be: and the most scariest creature is that 4 finned, funny looking alien. Like dear fish lord one second he's just there swimming around helplessly after hatching from that oversized egg, the next second he made these hard, weird looking reefs, and killing the toughest fish around with them weird exoskeletons!
The farthest I ever went was to the Aurora cus I wanted to see what would happen and I didn't get attacked by anything sadly. Also went to the place with the pink jellyfish things but couldn't explore out of fear and not having enough oxygen (╥_╥) Edit: I went near the back of the aurora eventually and got SHREDDED by reaper leviathans. Never going there again 💀
I swear, the reapers in the mountains are my best friends... the ones in the dunes are alittle mean sometimes. But, the Ghosts in the dead zone are my nightmare fuel. Endless depth, no land forwards, straight drop, and "Multiple Leviathan Class Creatures Detected, Are You Sure What You Doing Is Worth It?" HELLL NAW.
I am a wimp, lol. I fear deep, unexplored oceans and not knowing what's about to come out and attack me. Hearing the reaper leviathan before I ever even saw it actually scared me more than when I saw its shadow in the distance. Not by much, granted; the Reaper is terrifying, but it was scarier when I couldn't see it but heard that damn roar!
So you have thalassophobia, fear of deep waters. Same here though, if I were to play this game I’d need a good dare or something, if one of my friends buys this I’ll play it for five minutes then nope out. Knowing them, they probably will just to spite me and get weird quotes out of me.
I have heard it said many times that we know less about the ocean on our own planet then we do about the stars, planets, and other things located in the vastness of space. This makes the ocean a location ripe for horror as well as wonder. Thank you gaming industry for Subnautica.
The "Mesmer" fish was personally the scariest to me, seeing as it always seemed to catch me completely off guard. on top of that, their ominous as hell appearance compliments it way too well.
I've studied marine biology for a while and it's kinda cool seeing some of these creature designs because it looks like there's real world influences in a lot of them, both drawn from currently living animals and prehistoric ones on record Even some of their abilities seem to be based on real world creatures (though greatly exaggerated ofc)
Without a doubt warpers are the one thing in subnautica that freak me out more than anything. Not even the leviathans freak me out that much. I also hate that how at first they are alright but eventually you get a message from the warpers saying they are hunting you and then they try to kill you from that point on.
They sense the Kharaa virus within you, and since you are attempting to leave the planet, the Quarantine Enforcement Units, or “Warpers” are exterminating you, and are implied to be the cause for multiple of the other escape pod denizens.
Honestly the Warpers are the scariest to me. While I understand why most consider the Reaper Leviathans to be the most terrifying, something about feeling like you are safe in a sub and then being teleported out of that safety into the deep made me ****** my pants more then I would like to admit lol. At the very least the Reapers are isolated to pretty specific spots, while the Warpers are more spread out
Yeah bro i remember giving the controller to someone else when I arrived at the island cuz of bathroom and then I turn around and see him leaving the seamoth but it was a warper pulling him out
Ngl I legit route my games to avoid them as long as possible, like i’ll do all 3 degasi bases before the sunbeam or aurora just so the warpers aren’t aggro during the 3rd base
Super horror bro: The reaper is the scariest creature in the game Me: an arachnophob who quit playing subnautica because i was to scared by the tiny cave crawlers lol
Yep Im arachnophobic and had to take bout half a year to get back into the game but when I did I got over my fear, I just had to desensitise myself from them but blood crawlers i couldnt do that but luckily you dont need to really confront blood crawlers to beat the game, just floated above their head
Yeah I know you don't need to confront the blood crawlers but when you're in the lost river searching for slufur or nickel you can easly bump into one of those f*ckers
One of my goals in Subnautica is to eradicate all reaper leviathans that can't respawn. So far I've only killed 1 out of 25, but it was relatively easy with the prawn suit equipped with the grapple and drill arms so I'm gonna keep going so I never have to encounter those things again (until I start a new playthrough eventually, but that's besides the point).
@@randomanimatorandgamer9392 From what I've heard, yes. It's been a while since I've played, but I think leviathans and some other large hostile creatures like sharks that have specific spawn locations don't respawn after being killed. I haven't actually killed all 25 in a playthrough before, but it would probably take a few hours to do so lol
@@randomanimatorandgamer9392 Yeah, they're scary, but nothing a stasis rifle, thermoblade, and a bit of luck can't handle lol. Once you get the stasis rifle and thermoblade though, I'd only really recommend killing the Leviathans that guard places you go to often to make it a little easier, as most of them are sort of out of the way of places you need to come back to more than once or twice (Unless you're feeling especially like the guy in your pfp, in which case... rip and tear, until it is done).
Just today, I opened a door on a wreck, and almost had a heart attack when I saw a bone shark leaning against the doorframe. I’m talking a couple of centimeters from my nose.
When I first saw the ghost leviathan I just wanted to see how far I could go into the ocean and at 2000m away from my base I saw it and it terrified me
It's worse when you are swimming around in a vehicle (minus the cyclops) or your seaglide at night and you're constantly on edge no thanks to all the sounds going on around you & half of the time not being able to see your surroundings.
Overall a good list. Reaper is definitely number 1. I'd have put the Crashfish higher up though - you can encounter it in the first minutes of the game, it agressively chases you like few others, and it deals enough damage to be quite a surprise to new players. One thing though, I wouldn't call the Sea Treader at all scary. They're like elephants - large and impressive-looking but quite harmless as long as you don't actively annoy them.
I don’t like it when the game calls them “aliens”. We are the aliens, we are on their planet. Now if they came to our planet (which would be very hard to do, I’ll explain soon) they would be aliens. Now, the only way they could come close to making it to earth is if some people went there searching for specimens or whatnot and those people may not even be prepared for what they will see...
I think that applies in both ways, since you're technically in an alien planet that is completely new to you, but you are also an alien since you are strange and new for the enviroment around you
There's nothing more terrifying than finishing the game and building your neptune just to realize that you can't pick up the cuddle fish to take it back home with you.😭
There are two things I'm scared of 1st being stuck near aurora and losing power on my seamoth 2nd being flubbed by a glitch to the dead zone with my prawn suit
Agreed. The Reaper looks like something that could exist on Earth, just lurking in the depths of the Challenger Deep. I think that's why it's so scary--it looks way more realistic than the other big bads.
I litterally just was playing subnautica and saw a new fish so I told myself "lets scan it." When I got closer it stared at me and the woman talking to me starts saying "swim closer" and after I scanned it it bit me then I started to get scared and I ran away. Scaryest enemy ive seen in game
I thought they only chilled in the mushroom biome, and you pretty much have to either go through a kelp forest or go down a steep drop from the safe shallows
They are also really nice cause the leave behind shale outcroppings for that sweet sweet gold and diamond (I forgot what shale actually drops so apologies if I got it wrong)
I like the stalkers too. There's something cute about them swimming around with a large chunk of metal in it's jaws. Makes me wonder if they adorn their nests with the junk in hopes of attracting a mate.
@@nutdestroyer4157 To be fair nothing really is that deadly. Even the reapers can be avoided pretty easily. I agree with the ghost leviathan being higher on the list purely from the Dead Zone and the horrifying screech it makes when attacking you. Seeing its illuminated figure slowly grow larger as it approaches is genuinely horrifying.
The Stalkers and Bonesharks aren't too bad. They're aggressive sure but they're easily avoided. Also the Bleeders are annoying when you're trying to fix the Aurora's drive core but they're not too much of a problem. Mesmers on the other hand, now those things are freaky.
Yea me too. But this game actually kinda helped me. Yeah the creatures are still kinda scary but now I can get in the water a little easier and I'm a little less afraid of some biomes now. The ones were aren't the super dark ones. But I'm also in real live im less scared now. I don't know if it works for u but just try. Maybe it will help u too.
I built my first base in the Grassy Plateaus, and I went to the Kelp Forests to grab some creepvine. I ended up exploring for a bit, and I got a little bit lost, so I wandered around until the water changed colours. I thought I made it back the the Grassy Plateaus... then a huge freaking reaper popped out of nowhere, and I just noped my way out of there on my SeaGlide. I accidentally wandered into the Dunes, before I had any vehicles. That was my first reaper encounter, because somehow I was lucky enough to not meet any reapers when I went to the Aurora.
Then the scariest part. Realizing you worked so hard to gather materials to build a seamoth and cyclops, only to then have it destroyed instantly the moment you decide to leave the safety of your base to venture the dark deep. With meter crush resistance.
probably the scariest part of this game is driving a cyclops and randomly seeing a red dot appear on its radar

That, to me, makes it a lot scarier.
thats cause reaper is mostly made of muscle and little bone
Ghost leviathans more of a threat? Bullshit. Reapers are the hornets of the sea. They attack anything that moves
I think the thing that makes the reapers scary for me is their roar. Especially when you hear it very faintly the distance and you know one is not too far away.
For me, it's down to several factors:
- They inhabit areas of the world that are usually murky and/or hard to see far off in, meaning that you usually won't see them until they're right on top of you,
- They're the most aggressive Leviathan out there, and there are a crap ton of them to find (whereas the Ghosts and Sea Dragons are limited in population)
- The roar is just so much more terrifying, because you can usually hear the roar long before you'll ever see the damn things, and because of the implications that it can see you if you can hear it.

The thing I love about the creatures is that alot of them are very realistic

The Mesmer. The way it sounds like your pda just to trick you into getting close to it is genius.
Upon seeing all those stalker teeth piled up like that. Mr Burns: "Excellent.."
Me:Watching SuperHorrorBro in online class
Me:*Screams while teacher was talking*
Teacher:*Looks to me and then kicks me from the lesson*
The Stalkers and Bonesharks aren't too bad. They're aggressive sure but they're easily avoided. Also the Bleeders are annoying when you're trying to fix the Aurora's drive core but they're not too much of a problem.
Mesmers on the other hand, now those things are freaky.
I would love to play this game but I have an incredible fear of the deep ocean/the creatures below
Yes me too
I mean why do people play horror games? play this for the same reason as that then
I built my first base in the Grassy Plateaus, and I went to the Kelp Forests to grab some creepvine.
