Yeah its seems it was cut in 2019 after one of Unknown Worlds developer conferences, it seems the whole biome was scrapped which meant the Ice Dragon unfortunately went aswell
I think it was ultimately deemed too similar to the sea dragon so they decided not to go through with it. You never know though, I'm pretty sure every creature that got a full model was eventually added at some point, I remember the ghost leviathan was just a disembodied model for a really long time until eventually it got added, and the rock puncher and giant lily pads were both only models for a long time, and they eventually both made it into below zero

3:57 fun fact two of the designs for the concept of the sea monkey was actually used for two creatures in the same game one even had a similar kind of thing to the sea monkey and you can actually see a baby through the egg
I feel like replacing the current void leviathan in below zero with the ice dragon would have been interesting, the current void leviathan is terrifying but imagine adventuring into the darkness of the void and hearing one of the most blood curling roar, you turn around if fear but you've already gone to far, the player gets struck by a force that does 1\3 of the seatrucks health and slows the Vehicle, after, the player turns around to a beast as big as a ghost leviathan coming for another strike, you manage to get back out the void but not before one last hit putting the seatruck ar 1\3 health. I feel like I got to invested in this.
The Kitewing Skyray would have been perfect for the Tundra Void north of the Arctic Spires. The flat, barren landscape seems like an ideal environment to leave you exposed for some massive airborne creature to swoop in and kill you. It would also be hilarious because you would not expect skyrays-which are completely harmless-to have such dangerous larger cousins.
I really think having the ice dragon in below zero would’ve made people like the game a lot more. Below zero only had two hostile underwater leviathans, only one of which was a regular threat with the shadow leviathan only appearing in the end game. Having the cue dragon be like the ghost leviathans would’ve made exploring sector zero a lot scarier, especially the under the circumstances sections that are easy to get lost and trapped in
I always loved looking at the concept art images for both of the Subnautica games. They're always very interesting and cool to see, as they're usually very unique in design and/or function
Honestlt im leaning either the crested reaper or the ice dragon. The crested reaper could have been similar to the cryptosuchus but with more of the straight charge at you that the reaper had. Subnautica was a game where you look at the world and go, 'Yeah nah fuck that'. Then you coop in your base cause you rather not go in the Darkness with whatever roaring. And then you look at Below Zero and go, 'Not this again.' One was terrorizing. The other is agonizing.
I now want all these cut creatures :( Also have you heard of the single cell biome because its sorta a cut creature bc its just a big creature that drags you down
Photosynthesis is extremely rare in animals. I only know of one species of slug that does some photosynthesis. The issue with photosynthesis and cold environments, is that it'd be almost impossible for a creature to produce enough heat AND enough energy to produce the required heat through the sugars from photosynthesis.

Here I will state a couple of the creatures here that made it into the game but went through some changes. 1:51 this made its way into below zero as a ventgarden, it’s much bigger and holds spiral plants if you need that for any recipe. 5:09 two of these designs made it as other creatures but lost the abilities. Trivalves as a non-breedable pet and triops found in the deep twisty bridges and a couple other places. Triops are small enough to grab from the wild and if you want one it’s better to run into them by chance than go out looking for them, Spikey traps and rarely squidsharks lurk in its habitat and it’s a sparse creature anyway. 5:19 this creature went through major changes but I see resemblance to the noot fish. Noot fish are harmless but will devour anything they can eat whole. Big enough to eat a peeper but small enough to hold. 10:08 no trace of the ice dragon is left in the brinewing but it’s ability, to freeze prey. If you see titan holefish or symbiotes brinewing could be near. (Symbiotes are more parasite though) 6 months later: I now know symbiotes actually defend titan holefish, I used to think it was a meal.
Here’s my second comment I didn’t compact at first.. Don’t want to annoy anyone with too many comments 2:03 I’m imagining ginormous alpha gardener eels big enough to hold the in-game thermal lilies
I honestly would've loved to see the Rotnest, it would add a fun unique challenge, plus seeing all the infected variations would be cool as well, maybe even after getting infected you had to get a cure, otherwise the game would mess with your movement or sight or something of that nature.
I wish the devs didn’t cut any of these creatures. These would all look great in the game and make it feel more diverse. Imo I feel like below zero lacked a lot in the bigger creatures. Sad to see we couldn’t see the ice dragon or the ice reaper cousin.
wow the ice dragon is so pretty !! i love the grays !! i also love the cut sea monkey designs !!i like those ones more, as the ones we ended up with look too normal imo, though i still love them :3
I thought I knew a lot of subnautica cut conetent but Damm a lot of these would be really cool in game also I’m being stalked by a cuddlefish in attack mode so gotta go
I'd love to have seen the grabsquid alongside the sea monkey, possibly being slower and easier to escape/incapacitate, but being more nimble and draining the battery of anything it steals.
I think that the sand spear ended up becoming the “spiky trap” in below zero, since the two seem very similar. It’s also interesting that a lot of the cut designs for the sea monkey ended up getting reused as other creatures. The one with three googly eyes looks exactly like the triops fish, and the egg-shaped one looks like something called a Trivalve, which is supposedly BZ’s equivalent to the cuddlefish (I never encountered it myself, but supposedly it exists)
Hi Aletho! I know am really late, but thank you for covering the Ice dragon. Don't know if you remember me, but I asked you to check out the ice dragon back in your "ventgarden" video. So thank you for covering it!
Its got to be the crested reaper for me. The idea of a smaller relative to the reaper that hunts in pods and could knock you off an ice sheet sounds awesome.
Surprisingly, some of the designs for the sea monkey was actually used for some of the smaller sea life in the second one with one of them being the special eggs you can find in the game
the kitewing could be a kind of boss fight where you in a empty flat space where you need to avoid it and memerize its patterns and if you successfully pass it and get in into a type of new biome it could trigger a cool lil fight with the ice worm and the kitewing is killed
I fell in love when I saw the Ice Dragon during BZ's development. I hang on to my hope that somehow it could be implemented and when it wasn't, it broke my heart. I still can't play BZ without thinking about it and how awesome it would have been.
The good thing is that Below Zero showed us the developers are not above using old scrapped ideas, as many cut ideas from the original game were added to BZ. It's entirely possible that some of these creatures will be added to Subnautica 2, and if not, maybe creatures based on the scrapped ones. The Rock Puncher was scrapped in the first game and came back in BZ, so there is hope
I love the icebreaker and crested reaper, but really I think the rot parrasite would’ve been the most interesting thing to encounter. Parasites are very important for an ecosystem, and the ocean has a lot of them.
I would have liked to see the arctic variants of the first game’s creatures in place of some of the new ones we got. Not because they’re bad, but just because it would tie everything together just that little bit more
I wish the ice dragon had made it. But something that could have been funny to do with it is to have it shoot its ice breath and slap your seatruck around, clearly seeming aggressive. But when you scan it, it's revealed that it subsists entierly on alien-krill and kelp, and is in fact friendly. It's just playing. The giant spiky menacing ice dragon is just a giant Pinnacarid
Rotnests can basically make Brute Sharks into Metal Gear REXs. Think about it: they already have the mugshot of REX, what with the heavyset jaw and whatnot. And the Rotnests basically allow it to have the signature anti-tank missiles.
I actually find it interesting that some of the concepts and models DID make it into the game, just repurposed. The one sea monkey concept art design made it in as the triops fish The Ice Dragon's design was repurposed for the pinnicarid, or at least has a very similar design with the fins and general body shape. The Symbiotes from the ice dragon made it in (at least by name) as the titan holefish symbiotes. These are the main ones I could find, but yeah
I feel like for the next subnautica game, rotnest should make a return having rotnest evolve overtime and make the game harder the longer the players in it would be interesting, maybe make it so we haft to research a potential cure for the parasitic infection
Predatory Vent Garden would have been cool, surprised it never even got a concept. It would be so easy, just make one with an opaque skin that bulges and ripples occasionally and uses its tendrils to drag creatures inside. Where half a dozen chelicerate live.
Ive seen the thalassacean, its become a mod creature for subnautica de-extinction. I didnt know there was more than 2 variants tho, im gonna have to keep a look out for any in my game

They probably cut the gardener ell because it is a little bit to similar to the vent garden
Hey Aletho, I just wanted to say that I love that you made some new drawings for your character. It’s really nice to see you improving your work!
Thanks Finn! It felt like time for an update, the hardest part is figuring out what other poses I want / need that can be shown in a creative way! :)
Hey Aletho, was looking forward to your next video.
Thanks Warduxe! It was a long time coming! :D
It's a good day when Aletho uploads
And you're first comment Miliradian!
@@iAlethoWhats even better is i got the notification just when i started eating
I wish the devs didn’t cut any of these creatures. These would all look great in the game and make it feel more diverse. Imo I feel like below zero lacked a lot in the bigger creatures. Sad to see we couldn’t see the ice dragon or the ice reaper cousin.
5:05 The first and second designs were just used for the trivalve and triops.
I loved the "down right horrifying" **high pitch squeak** **FLAMETHROWER**
Been waiting for a video on the cut creatures
Well here it is just for you!
wow the ice dragon is so pretty !! i love the grays !! i also love the cut sea monkey designs !!i like those ones more, as the ones we ended up with look too normal imo, though i still love them :3
oh and i also noticed the first concept art of the sea monkey you showed looks almost exactly like the trivalve !!
Man the Icebreaker leviathan is my favourite out of all of these. it wouldve been so cool and fun to see
I thought I knew a lot of subnautica cut conetent but Damm a lot of these would be really cool in game also I’m being stalked by a cuddlefish in attack mode so gotta go
That cuddle fish is right on your tail misterglo!
@@iAletho I gotta make the Neptune rocket quick let’s hope it needs air to survive
Hopefully some make it into subnautica 2 especially ice dragon or a variant of that design (:
I would not add any of them like WHAAAAA YOU THINK I WANT EVEN MORE PTSD FROM THAT GAME?! LIKE WHAAAAAA- I'm scared
Glad you think it was worth the wait Gigaknight! :)
Its got to be the crested reaper for me. The idea of a smaller relative to the reaper that hunts in pods and could knock you off an ice sheet sounds awesome.
I really hope we get something like the de-extinction mod but for below zero cause I need that ice dragon in my life
I feel like discovering, studying, and dealing with the Rotnest parasite could be the plot of an entire game.
I’m always a sucker for giant scary creatures. Still really cool to learn about them.
0:01 *DLC. the sequel is subnautica 2
The Rotnest reminds me of the Flood from Halo
4:50 I love how this concept art says "A knife!" and is referencing to "What do you have? A KNIFE! NO!"
The Ice Dragon sounded like such a cool and interesting idea. Especially if it was in Below Zero.
Really makes me wonder what could have been.
I would have loved to see the original reaper
Surprisingly, some of the designs for the sea monkey was actually used for some of the smaller sea life in the second one with one of them being the special eggs you can find in the game
Thallassacean looks like the peeper leviathan
the kitewing could be a kind of boss fight where you in a empty flat space where you need to avoid it and memerize its patterns and if you successfully pass it and get in into a type of new biome it could trigger a cool lil fight with the ice worm and the kitewing is killed
I fell in love when I saw the Ice Dragon during BZ's development. I hang on to my hope that somehow it could be implemented and when it wasn't, it broke my heart. I still can't play BZ without thinking about it and how awesome it would have been.
Sand spear defibitely bobbit worm inspired
The good thing is that Below Zero showed us the developers are not above using old scrapped ideas, as many cut ideas from the original game were added to BZ. It's entirely possible that some of these creatures will be added to Subnautica 2, and if not, maybe creatures based on the scrapped ones.
The Rock Puncher was scrapped in the first game and came back in BZ, so there is hope
I love the icebreaker and crested reaper, but really I think the rot parrasite would’ve been the most interesting thing to encounter. Parasites are very important for an ecosystem, and the ocean has a lot of them.
I wish the Ice Dragon was in game
Kinda depressed some of these were scrapped, they would have definitely improved the game
I would have liked to see the arctic variants of the first game’s creatures in place of some of the new ones we got. Not because they’re bad, but just because it would tie everything together just that little bit more
That icebreaker reefback is such a wonderful idea, I would have loved to see them in game, pity...
The rotnest is horrifying.
the crested reaper kinda looks like the chelicerate with the mandibles, maybe this eventually inspired the chelicerates final design
Pretty sure the sand spear's inspiration was a bobbit worm, go look it up of you don't know what that is
Rotnests can basically make Brute Sharks into Metal Gear REXs. Think about it: they already have the mugshot of REX, what with the heavyset jaw and whatnot. And the Rotnests basically allow it to have the signature anti-tank missiles.
I actually find it interesting that some of the concepts and models DID make it into the game, just repurposed.
The one sea monkey concept art design made it in as the triops fish
The Ice Dragon's design was repurposed for the pinnicarid, or at least has a very similar design with the fins and general body shape.
The Symbiotes from the ice dragon made it in (at least by name) as the titan holefish symbiotes.
These are the main ones I could find, but yeah
Cut content still makes for great starting points to jump-start future franchise sequels.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣THE INTRO MADE ME LAUGH SO HARD I ALMOST DIED 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
i love the gardenener eel so much
but can it survive the bioreactor 😇
Is this the new version of will it blend? xD
@@iAletho will it bioreactor?
I feel like for the next subnautica game, rotnest should make a return
having rotnest evolve overtime and make the game harder the longer the players in it would be interesting, maybe make it so we haft to research a potential cure for the parasitic infection
Awww look how cute the ice dragon is,would definitely make a good pet😃👍
It looks like it would make a good plushie!
@@iAletho damn now I want one
new aletho vid!!
this was worth the wait. thank you, aletho.
Predatory Vent Garden would have been cool, surprised it never even got a concept.
It would be so easy, just make one with an opaque skin that bulges and ripples occasionally and uses its tendrils to drag creatures inside. Where half a dozen chelicerate live.
As scared as I would've been to play the game, I would've loved to see the Ice Dragon in action!
I wish we got those spiders could’ve made things more interesting and add more variety to the underwater creatures
Ive seen the thalassacean, its become a mod creature for subnautica de-extinction. I didnt know there was more than 2 variants tho, im gonna have to keep a look out for any in my game
