    So cool that you have a Drangons Lair. I played that a ton when I was a kid. I remember the First time I saw it at an arcade. My mom had taken me on vacation to Disneyland, and we were out sight seeing somewhere. I went in this arcade and there was this game Dragons lair. Funny thing about it was it was in black and white video, not color. I have never heard anyone speak of seeing something like this. Maybe it was some type of beta test unit. Or maybe there was something wrong with the game. Regardless, I was absolutely amazed. This would have been around 1983.

    • @BrokenArcade
      @BrokenArcade  3 года назад

      The Starcade arcade at Disneyland was amazing! Right next to Space Mountain. The black and white sounds like he monitor lost color but what a fantastic game huh? Dragons Lair is most definitely one of my favorites.

    Phenomenal collection Sir. I grew up with a C64 and Amiga, and only started getting into arcades in the mid 90's. UMK3 was one of my most played at a local convenience store right next to my high school in England, but a few other stores had some older cabs with Joust, Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man. I live in the US now, and lately I have been falling in love with the whole arcade aesthetic and ambience, frequently going on trips with my family to play both arcades and pinball. I have yet to make my first purchase on a real arcade cab, but I plan to do it in a couple of years when I'm ready. I mostly play using MAME/RetroArch/BigBox on my Windows PC, alternating between a Qanba Obsidian fight stick and a Legends Pro Gamer controller that I modded with 2 spinners, Suzo Happ buttons w/ Cherry 75g switches, two Sanwa joysticks with a battop with 2lb springs. It'll do for the time being! I sincerely hope you are proud of your collection, it is truly a sight to behold!

    On Track N Field, my buddies and I, we use to cheat using a pencil. Pencil? We would place a pencil horizontally between our pointer and middle finger. Place your hand between the two buttons to run. The pencil would allow you to hit the run button quickly back-and-forth as you tapped down one side of the pencil! Try it, it works!

    Speaking of Disneyland/amusement park arcades, the LARGE arcade at Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio was always a great old skool arcade through the 70s-80s.
    AFAIK, it's still there, been at least 5-6 years since I've been there.
    They were doing a good job maintaining vintage machines, while keeping up to date rotating in new machines.
    Of course there are old skool Skeeball machines and the like too
    But the size was unmatched around the Midwest- wide and deep, always found some old vintage game deep in there

    1982 was a great yr for arcades. Ms Pacman was my favorite . Always cool to go though a ghost - if the ghost has its eyes in another direction. Clyde was always the stupidest one. Later on got myself a paper route so Paperboy cool - At one arcade that I played in Centiped was called Wormer and the it was little apple's thar u shot instead. Ever cleared the screen ? When it comes to Q-bert by the time u really advace the graphics will f with your eyes but you're right the sounds Were iconic. Tempest - didn't even turn my neck when I walked into an arcade and byy the time Gauntlet came out. It was all about shoving quarters into a machine my love affair faded . But from 81 to 86 great time to be a boy .

    Funny that you mentioned the Starcade at Disneyland. I remember spending a lot of time in that place when I was a teen. I also remember my parents saying, “Why do you want to play in the arcade, you can do that at home”. I would tell them they didn’t understand because there wasn’t a arcade like that at home. It was a big part of my childhood and I’m glad I have the memories of the multilevel Starcade, the most badass arcade I ever experienced. You have a awesome collection which includes the most iconic game selections. Thanks for the tour, I’d love to play any of those.

    WOW I am actually impressed for a change. The only game that I cannot understand why you have it in your collection for is zoo keeper. All the rest of the games are 100% classics and would be in my arcade if I had one. I would swap out zoo keeper for Xevious but I would want a lot more or at least a few more, such as defender, space invaders. My OCD is killing right now, as I know that I would actually want to move house so that I could fit more machines in. However, what a collection you have, very good taste in games.

    Paperboy was one of those Videogame Crash era releases, when popular interest in videogames tanked. But I vividly recall seeing it first at the local Chuck E Cheese.
    Besides the unusual controller, the monitor/gfx were striking for the time, ie no obvious scanlines and much higher refresh rate/resolution vs other games of the time.

    • @BrokenArcade
      @BrokenArcade  2 года назад

      Very nice. Paperboy was defiantly an original setup. I played that at a 7/11 for the first time and I too remember seeing it and playing it at a Chuck E Cheese in San Diego as a kid.

    They all take me back. My wife loves the older ones like pac-man, space invaders, Phoenix, donkey kong. She has ten years on me, so they was out when she was a kid. My favourites are double dragon, teenage mutant ninja turtles, golden axe, NBA jam, wrestle fest.
    They was big when I was ten. I just bought a pandora saga console and just completed TMNT for the first time in 30 years lol. Made me feel like a kid at Christmas.
    Pretty sure it also has the Simpsons game. I'll check that out tomorrow.

      @@BrokenArcade thanks bro. I only got back into vintage gaming about a six weeks ago. Up until then I hadn't played any arcade or console since about 94-95. It's been fantastic reliving my 80s n early 90s childhood again, playing all my old favourite games.
      Stupidly, me and the wife downsized our house a while back because the one we had before was too big for just the two of us. Now I regret that because now I have no room for arcade cabinets. 🤦‍♂️
      I might be able to talk the wife into letting me have one cab. That would be either TMNT, Phoenix, or golden axe.
      But, atleast I can live vicariously through people like you instead lol.
      I really love your setup.
      I've seen many on RUclips this last month, but the vast majority are those 1up cabs, which don't get me wrong, they're cool but not as cool as the real thing. Yours look amazing. It's great to see then in their original form. You actually have some games there that I've never seen before, which is fantastic.
      Congratulations bro.🙏🏻👊

    I love videos of arcade game collections like this! Hopefully your garage doesn't get too hot during the summer. I've never seen Mad Planets before. Also by Gottleib. I don't think I remember Space Zap from my childhood, but the premise is like Cosmic Ark on the 2600. I never saw Vanguard at an arcade, but I played it on the 2600. It's an early SNK game. Your collection is pretty fantastic. Personally I'd not get Track & Field but rather Gyruss or Time Pilot instead. Other than that, fantastic game room!

And 2, I'd have to pay for the restoration cause I don't have the ability to work on them to extent to get em perfect. Probably say that about any other collections I would try to get into that would require restoration like cars. Lol

    Great example of a Joe Blow/working man's home arcade in a garage.
    A lot of us would love to replicate, but just too impractical owning so many large cabinets and maintaining and powering all that stuff. Plus the low WAF/SO factor
    So most of us settle for Mame/RetroPIe multiple emulation cabinets.
    However, as a compromise I am collecting authentic arcade machine parts- marquees and control panels for games with unique controls other than standard ball top joysticks and tracballs/spinners.
    Stuff like the Star Wars yoke (GRS), Ikari Warriors stick that rotates, Tron stick (GRS), and a recently acquired commercial Pole Position control panel with the wheel/gearshift
    Plan is to make just a couple of multi-purpose emulated arcade cabinets with swappable marquees/control panels.'
    Wide marquee- sized LCD/OLED screens are getting cheaper all the time, so I think a video screen marquee will be the way to go moving forward for swapping marquee art per game
    While nothing beats running a vintage game on vintage PCB hardware and a tube CRT, I'm good with improving emulation on an LCD/OLED using the vintage game controls where the controller was a big part of the gameplay experience/feel, using judgement on a game by game basis, or just personal preference/nostalgia per game

    • @BrokenArcade
      @BrokenArcade  2 года назад

    Nice arcade. Does your Dragon's Lair use an original laser disc or using Dexter emulation?

      Great question and you are correct. I have a working player and the Dragons Lair & Space Ace discs including Space Ace roms. However i have retired those for now and using the Dexter mod.

    Are there restrictions on owning arcade machines? States restrict the ownership of casino slot machines.

    • @angrytheclown801
      @angrytheclown801 3 года назад

      There shouldn't be. Anti-Gambling laws don't apply to arcade cabinets like they do with slot machines as there's no promise of a financial pay off like there is any gambling machine.

      Some states pinball was or is illegal.

      @@vilekyle22 Yeah, the mob used pinball machines for gambling. I would bet (HA!) that the guvment mainly was upset it wasn't taxed income.

      No restrictions owning them for personal. For business, of 6 or more machines you need the proper licenses, at least where I live. www.sandiego.gov/sites/default/files/legacy/treasurer/pdf/new_arcade.pdf

    What kind of carpet did you use? I am planning on converting my 2 car garage in the next couple of weeks and have been trying to find something durable. Thanks.

      Late response I know but I used the sky grey carpet from Home Depot. I got 2x 25’ rolls and used duck tape to seam them together. Home Depot has a wide range of cheap carpet.

    Quick editing tip, too many competing sounds. Drop them music if you're not doing a voice over or if you do choose the ambient tone or other.
    Really LOVE your setup, I wish I could convert my garage to an arcade.

      Appreciate the comment. With all the game sounds, the TV playing classic 80s videos and me not using a mic would account for that. I didn't add any additional backing tracks but next time I should at least mute the TV.
