CHEAPER FOOD OPTIONS at a LOCAL HAWKER CENTRE in SINGAPORE 🇸🇬 | Ang Mo Kio 628 Market

- In this video, we head to a local hawker centre, Ang Mo Kio 628 Market. We figured there must be a way to eat all this delicious food at a more affordable (daily) rate. We started asking our taxi/ Grab drivers, who suggested this neighborhood hawker centre. The food options were outstanding! Cedar was focused on trying Singapore’s National Dish: Chicken Rice. We also stumbled upon Kaya Toast, which happens to pop up in many Google searches and from our audience’s comments. Kaya is coconut jam. We even found a delicious vegetarian option for Kelly, even though she is recovering from her operation and missed this hawker centre. Watch until the end to find out who enjoyed the vegetarian dish the most. You might be surprised! We didn’t think to film this as a food challenge, but we did feed all four of us on less than $15 USD. I’m thinking we might need another Singapore food challenge in the future.
We hope you enjoyed this video. Feel free to SHARE this with your friends and family who might be interested in exploring Singapore.
In our next video, we explore Singapore’s famous Jewel at the Changi Airport!

Did u know I live in Singapore?
I don't like banana but it's healthy. Try salak sir. I like that.
Blk 628 Ang Mo Kio Hawker center is in my neighborhood. The coffee shop right next to the hawker center has a BBQ pork stall that offers a more delicious version of the BBQ pork than the one you guys had. Also, the hawker center has a stall that do up a pretty good pork fried rice.✌
This is what well raised kids are like. Amazing parenting.
Lies again? Ang Mo Kio Police Division
Thank you so much.
It's lacking in western world, kudo to you for being such a wonderful parents, your kids are well behaved 👍👍👍
one adult alone with three kids without any devices.. even in singapore it’s a rare sight to see. Well done, what lovely kids
Devices are a blight on this world.
As a Singaporean, it warms my heart to see you exploring the heartlands and trying the foods like a local. Your kids are cute and very open to trying new things as well, awesome!
Thank you so much!
@@BagsPackedFamily Welcome to Singapore!
You raised your kids so well! They’re well-behaved, well-mannered, very open to try without a word of complaint! I love how you venture out to try less touristy areas, and I realized wherever you go and whenever you place orders, you ask for your kids’ opinions, that’s wonderful parenting!
You are a very patient father, watching 3 kids can be very stressfull sometimes, but you
always seem to have time for the 'problems' your kids from while to while do have and you
never seem to be exhausted🎅
Thank you for your kind words. :-)
It is so heartwarming to see his kids being so comfortable in a food court environment and being so immersed in less touristy locations.
impressed by how well behaved the kids are
I love the way Forest expresses himself. Always cute, fun and entertaining! So funny! 😆😆😆
Thanks, Diamond Girl! :-)
Love the way your family share drinks or food together, such a close knit family. Doesn't get more fun when your kids enjoy travelling and vlogging with you. Cedar's reaction to something that she dislike is sweet. 🤣🤣. All these are moments to cherish for a life time.
Thank you, for bringing viewers into our heartlands. This is the side of Singapore that tourists don’t normally see. We aren’t always expensive and luxurious. And more than often there’re hidden gems and good local food. I like that you and your kids were so appreciative and adventurous :) Cheers!
me and my wife are coming to sg in April and hope we meet some locals like we did the last time we visited 28 years ago on our honeymoon they showed us so much more than just the shiny bits
Forrest has most loving and considerate big brother-sister duo❣️ The three children are amazingly composed and calmly-behaved even with the little one feeling, one might think, separation anxiety for mom❤️ that still was most natural feeling for him to have.
Thank you so much! 😊
The kids are amazing! Very impressed with how adventurous they are with food! Food is a great way to experience and understand another culture! Enjoy your stay in Singapore!
Great job in going right into the heartlands instead of hanging around the regular touristy areas! You can be proud to say that you had a real Singapore experience here. This was as authentic as it gets.
Today's vlog was taken over by the kids and they did an amazing job as always. We really missed Kelly, and her reactions. Hope she recovers soon!
Point 1
It's clear that those children are being raised very well 👍 Great to see this family enjoying eating at a local Singaporean hawker food court 👍🍽
So delightful to watch your video as you interact so spontaneously. Great idea to bring your children along! Cheers from Singapore
Tourists should venture more into the heartlands when they visit sg. Popular ones would be Ang Mo Kio, Woodlands, Yishun, Jurong, Tampines. There are shopping malls, hawker centres and local sights to see. If you're lucky there might even be a night market. Plenty of cheaper options compared to the cbd area. Don't just try chinese cooked dishes. Try out some Malay and Indian local dishes too. We are after all a multiracial country.
20:47 such a sweet gesture from granate he's definitely a great elder brother!❤️
Nice to see big brother granite sharing his juice with forest...reminded me of my childhood days with my sis...
He’s a good big brother. :-)
My first time watching this youtuber’s vlog & I like it 👍 Nice, respectful dad & very well-behaved children who helped give their honest opinions . I wish that there was a local to show you around & guide you in food choices. Glad you bought white( poached) chicken for the chicken rice dish but you missed out on thick soya/ black sauce which goes very well with the chicken. There are lots of other yummy local dishes that you & family should try. There are Malay & Indian hawker food . Oh.. you should have bought the radish ‘cakes’( chwee kueh) & take it back to the hotel for Kelly to eat.
Wondering how many days more you’ll be staying in Singapore. Being new to your channel, I don’t know if you have been to all our wonderful places like The Zoo, Night Safari, Jewel, Gardens By The Bay, etc etc.
All the best to you & your lovely family 🤗🌻
Hi Mandy. Thanks for so much for the many suggestions on places to visit. Unfortunately, this was a pretty short trip, but we plan to visit Singapore and Malaysia in the spring. :-)
your children are very lucky, a lot of experience since childhood to explore different countries, always healthy, and stay safe
Haha watching them eat the Chwee Kueh (radish dish) and guessing the ingredients was so funny. This is a common local breakfast dish, the ‘veggies’ on top are preserved turnip. Happy to see the local market being explored… The kids are sooo adorable and well-mannered!
Thank you! The dish was so good!
U could hv packed this radish bk for Kelly to enjoy, since u guys r so impressed abt it ... 😊
your kids are AMAZING and well behaved, and welcome to SINGAPORE! glad to have you here.
Hi Marcus.... its me em1ly
Great video. The daddy is patient man and children are well behave. Not easy to bring 3 kids out. 👏👏👏cheers and enjoy.
U have a great family and it’s nice to see the children are open to experiencing the local food. Hope you have a fun time in Singapore.
Haha great vlog! Love the kids reaction to new food. They are really mature and open to new food. Wishing Kelly a speedy recovery!
This is very local❤
For the chicken rice,
Usually I will have three of the sauce mixed as my dip
Chilli(red),ginger(yellow), dark sauce.
The purpose of the ginger and chilli is to purge “the wind or cold” to balance up the food, According 😊to old folks
The three pieces of white cake are make of rice and the name is “chwee kueh “ aka “water cake”. The brown stuff are dried pickle vegetable or reddish.
Another one you may want to try is “fried carrot cake”, a very local food and kids will love them
Really cool to see you guys work out what was in the kaya - and you were spot on! Coconut and Pandan (which is also in the green jelly noodles in cendol)
Also the Chwee kueh (radish dish) you guys tried is really famous. The stall is called Bedok Chwee kueh and the original stall was awarded the Michelin bib gourmand in 2019 ;)
the item you ate at Bedok is chwee kueh its made of primarily rice flour, the radish is the topping
Thanks for the added information! :-)
@@BagsPackedFamily It's usually eaten like a breakfast snack item or a meal by itself. Like a hot starchy breakfast punctuated by savory radish and spicy chilli.
For the kaya toast it's actually 1 of 3 that belongs in a breakfast set. It typically consists of the toast, soft boiled eggs that you can dip the toast into (pepper and soy sauce optional) and a drink of your choice. The famous example is yakun kaya toast and its loved by almost everyone here and afar. Give kaya toast another try in that setting
Cedars confidence is building lovely, she's becoming the perfect little vlogger🥰🥰
She's definitely taking an interest in vlogging. :-)
Kaya is commonly known as Coconut Jam... Its coconut milk cook with sugar and eggs... Some have panda leaves added for a unique taste and colour...
Pandan leaves
Panda leaves 🤣🤣
Panda : _“再见”_
Yes, the taxi driver is correct! Many of the neighbourhood hawker centres have pretty good food for low prices.
Singaporeans love spicy! 😊
Kaya is pandan coconut jam, you are eating the bread wrong. You are supposed to eat the 2 pieces together like a sandwich.
The last dish is rice cakes with preserved radish bits on top.
Hello guys,Glad to see the most awaited your vlog.Wishing Kelly a speedy recovery.
Wow this is where I go for lunch after going for my haircut every month! Super impressed that you guys managed to find this place. The chicken rice stall is also my favourite and the closed oyster omelette stall also sells delicious fried hokkien prawn mee as well. The carrot cake stall opposite the roast meat stall is pretty cheap and good. Do have a try if you come back
Great to know you guys are reaching out to the heartlands! Have fun!
It is really heart-warming to see you and your kids enjoying local food in the neighborhood hawker center.
Hi there, you beautiful people
I came across your channel while looking at some Singapore travel vlog. Thank you for walking down the memory lane with me. Like you, I left my birthplace Singapore and travelled around the globe working and funding my travels. Now, I am happily married and had settled in Australia for good. Come and say hello when you are down under. Hugs for the kids x
Your daughter is very mature and she has a nice Darth Vader t shirt.
Very educational! Thanks!
Beautiful parents with beautiful kids. What a wonderful parenting 👏
Your kids are unbelievable!! Keep it up !!❤❤
Glad u have visited our authentic neighborhood hawker center and experience the vibe and much lower price than the touristy ones downtown.
So wonderful to see a family, especially foreigners, enjoying the food at a local hawkers food center. The family that eat together stay together. The kids will be foodies, food experts when they grow up Hahaha
Every dish you picked is spot on! you did your research very well! Kudos!!
Daddy is so patient :) Kids are well behaved and adorable!
White chicken meat ..whole chicken boiled in broth n soak in icy cold chicken so the slimy taste is hardened collagen
Kelly get well soon you've been missed much love Xx ps the children are amazing Xx
As an usual kids so nice even though they looked sleepy, awesome kids, wish the best of luck for your journey and get well soon Kelly.
You guys are such great parents and your kids are so well behaved and adjust to different cultures easily. Do hope you guys can come back to Singapore or even consider living here.
Thank you! We’ll be back in the spring. :-)
It's Hainanese Chicken. Very popular dish.
So wonderful looking at the children response and reaction to the food....!
❤ and enjoyed watching your videos probably cause of your three cute lovely children. Real 😊 you and your family had enjoyed the food in the hawker centers you had been to.
Beautiful family, really intelligent kids!
Your kids are so cute! And it's great you're exposing them to different experiences at a young age.
Thank you so much!
As a father myself my humble respect to you thou its not an easy task to entertain to your children needs what an awesome family, well mannered children, good parenting, good vlog speedy recovery to your wife GWS have a great holiday in s'pore.
Great video showing the different side of Singapore.
What a lovely family you have.
The fried brown veg compliments that goes with chwee kuey l is turnip. I once remembered my mum saying the tiny cakes are not raddish but in actual fact rice grained to its finest form.
Your ELDEST SON IS SO KIND LOOK WHAT FOREST DID TO HIS BROTHER HE STAMPEDE HIS FEET TO HIS BROTHER😂😂😂😂and his BIG BROTHER NEVER SPANKED FOREST , when you are eating GINGER COOKIES. FOREST WAS REALLY AN ADORABLE BABY😂😂😂
Ultimate Hawker Family video... Mr Boris and everyone are present...
The school that you are teaching in is really fortunate to have you as a teacher teaching their students there.👍👍
wow. welcome to Singapore. hope you have fun. thank you for the video. :D
Great video, Kids are loving it. Love how you are introducing them to ordering food etc. Keep it up. Forest will adapt as he ages ahha. Also on bubble tea the bubbles are filled with corn starch, kids should stay away from those.
I'm excited to see your content developing well
Hahaha! Your baby boy is so cute! Your kids are so well behaved and well travelled.
I'm always amazed by how adventurous the older kids are. They are always trying new things and they appreciate almost everything they eat. Of course they don't like everything, but they always have a very thoughtful rationale for why they like or dislike something. They are so much more mature and... "gastronomically oriented" than almost any child their ages.
Forest on the other hand... sorry, but not there at all. Of course he is so much younger, things will hopefully change as he grows. But it makes me wonder: How were the older kids when they were Forest's age? Were they as picky as he is now, or were they already on their way to become little gourmets?
Thank you so much for the support. Good question, both Granite and Cedar were both pretty adventurous eaters from a young age. I hope Forest is just a late bloomer. :-)
Love the way u interact with yr kids.. good parenting.. with that, im gonna be a subscriber 😀
really nice videos, relaxing and fun, great kids and dad.
Your kids are pretty adventurous and delightful to watch.
Your kids are amazing 😍
I eat here three times a week! Love the roast duck stall and the poached chicken rice stall!
You guys are food explorers. The children are learning so much.
Smart kids I know they will always treasure these amazing memories and moments forever
Welcome to Singapore and great to see you and the kids are so open to trying local food! Have a blast!
Thanks! 😃
this is wholesome content, love from singapore!
Lol so cute video 💗 I love forest. Also why was that auntie dead on staring at him lol
Glad you are enjoying the true local flavors and welcome to Singapore!
Thanks! 😃
😄 3 lovely kid and a great dad , nice video
You re so blessed with a bunch of wonderful , respectful, beautiful kids .
You're correct, SGP is the safest country. Glad y'all are enjoyed the food.
Kaya is a kind if bread spread made from eggs, sugar and pressed coconut juice as the main ingredients. You mixed all these 3 ingredients together and steam it till it is cooked.
Oyster omelette stalls are mostly opened in the evening as a late night snack. You should try them in many different hawker centres at night. Great hawker video.
This market is near my house and it is my favorite place too. So glad you enjoyed the food there. ❤
Lovely kids! Hope u love our local food!
Omg this is aweseome I stay at Blk 629 which is just beside 628 I was sick of the food there. Glad you guys get to try the real local instead of the tourist spot.
This is as local as it gets! You should head to the nearby Bishan - Ang Mo Kio Park. It is a very large and pretty park in the vicinity! Actually, the hawker centres around Chinatown such as Hong Lim Food Centre and Chinatown Complex are pretty affordable as well.
The white thingie you ate is called chwee kuay. It is made from rice flour. On top of it is preserved radish. This is a very popular breakfast item.
Loved it n ceder oohww.. eat here? Huh? n yes yes yes so innocent.. cheers
''KAYA'' is basically a sweet coconut curd ''flavouved with pandan'' or the brown one made with brown sugar.. they put that stuff on everything.. from cakes to pastries
The Pork Rice you guys ordered were Char Siew, a type of red sweet sauce glazed pork. Perhaps next time you guys can order roast pork rice. Btw, your kids are so adorable.
Some places have their chicken and rice separated as 1 portion. Usually, I would like to order that kind so that the soy sauce doesn't get absorbed by the rice. I always like to order steamed chicken thighs without skin and bones, yes you can request for skin and bones to be removed so it is easier to eat.
Wow. Very impressive how you can juggle between the kids. Lol.
Hope you enjoy your stay here in Singapore.
And you are right. Kaya is pandan/coconut spread.
Hahahah the uncle looking at the camera when yall were talking i front of the pork rice stall
yes kaya, is coconut spread, if its green, its flavoured with pandan leaves essence. the yellowish brown one is just caramelised coconut jam, if u will.
Your daughter is such a sweetheart.
Nice.Thankyou
Kelly Jonathan Granite Cedar and Forest you rock thanks for sharing the vlog kids loved the food and play land awesome! Save trip happy holidays to all wish I was there -12f in New Jersey 😘
Yes yes good recommendation this is the most local "vibe" hwaker centre ever. I grew up there I know
Putting this video in queue to watch later when is am having tims to focus as this was our first hawker center experience when we moved to SG 10+ years ago as we stayed next to it (624).
Really interested to see how it has changed or not changed at all 😀
