Regarding the set-list question I remember one time at a concert where a band had just their reunion after a four year hiatus and many people at the venue didn't really liked their new style of music. When they played the old songs, everybody went wild and had fun, but with every song from the new album the crowd went practically silent and some even boo'd (and demanded old songs instead). It was such a weird moment and I kinda felt bad for the band.

Reminds me of my only Mando Diao concert from years ago
They only played new stuff, which basically only a couple of people liked. There were quite a few boos and shouts "Play some Rock'n'Roll!". Horrible concert and what made matters worse was that everything was just focused on the two singers, which seemed high on something and the rest of the band were in the background. Worst concert I ever attended. I left after they played "Dance with somebody" before the encore. But I saw Slash a couple of days later which made up for it.

@@tehgeiger It wasn't them. :D The band I mean is Guano Apes. And it appears that they are touring again. I kind of wonder what they are playing since their latest album release was in 2017 and that was mostly a re-record of their first album from 1997. Other than that there's no news of a new/fresh album from them.
I think you cold mention Def Leppard, except the opposite. Even though they just released a new album, they only played two songs off of it on their most recent tour. I'd say 90% of their set-list was made up of songs from High N Dry, Pyromania and Hysteria. People prefer the old stuff, and I think they know it.
My in-laws took my wife and her sisters to a P!nk concert a few years back. From one metalhead to another, you owe it to yourself to see her show. Spotless performance with exceptional stage presence.

I'm lucky to work with a band who writes a completely different setlist every night. This is highly unusual, but it makes mixing them a pure joy, even if it forces me to keep on my toes. But the fans love it. I've seen the same fans come 7 or 8 shows on one tour because they know it'll be a different show every night.
That’s awesome, man. I’ve only been on one or two tours in my life that were like that, and it always keeps it interesting. I will say though, as a guitar tech, having the same set list every night allows for better planning. 😂
The only band I know of with an extensive change to the entire setlist each night is Pearl Jam.

In flames was the band that broke the rockstar idea i had from artist. Early 2000 i was on the balcony to watch the opener and Anders and Bjorn came to set right next to me and my friends, says hi and spend all the opener talking and just having fun and geeking out to music.
Lmao saw them last year and anders was egging us on to flip him off since we were too nice for a USA crowd

Went to louder than life in KY and in hindsight, thinking i made the right call. Think you can do a breakdown on how and why so many tours are being cancelled and why so many bands are just refusing to tour? Was reading how the cost has tripled for a band since the pandemic and how entry has gotten so difficult. I read about 3 cancelled tours from last week alone.

@@TankTheTech Yeah, it's shocking how even bigger bands that play midsize and larger venues are pulling the plug, think it's going to go back to a DIY approach?
@@NPK476 co-headline tours seems to be the remedy for those bands. It used to be somewhat of a rarity to see a co-headline tour in the past and now I see them pass by very regularly.
Also, either a line-up that is very diverse (like for instance Arch Enemy/Behemoth co-headline tour with Carcass and Unto Others as support) or one that is stacking the names in a certain genre (like for instance the In Flames tour with At The Gates, Imminence and Orbit Culture).
But yeah, there have been some very clear and major shifts in the live industry because of both the pandemic and inflation.

I love the question about crowds, it happens in all stage art forms. Bands feed of that energy same as actors in live theater. In fact just went to a small theater show and we were there to support a friend. The lead of the show came out and thank my self and my friends for reacting and laughing it was there closing night and the night before was dead. So he felt so much better leaving the show on a high note.

Loved the question about the setlist. the most fun thing i ever experienced was enter shikari playing their song Antwerpen in Antwerp (a song they never played anywere else on their tour). So its cool to see bands change it up a bit from time to time in tours depending on were they are :D
My first concert was Ringo as well. 93 maybe? On a pier downtown Seattle. Was really cool.

Thanks for the video. The gateway band is an interesting one. Assuming there is metal for anyone who likes music, and I personally believe that's the case, you'd have to know/ask what they already like, cause you know whatever it is someone had probably tried to metal it up at some point: jazz, EDM, classical, folk/world, hip-hop, ambient, opera, R&B/soul, Broadway, maybe even bluegrass...
Excellent point, and I kind of start there, but Nine Inch Nails was one that was always a go to because it usually had the highest success rate across the bored. Haha

@@npinjest7779 I agree that they are good gateway bands, but for me it was Avantasia, at that time only a studio projekt, but so many great singers, for example Sharon Den Adel, and when you dive into Within Temptation Nightwish was the most logical next step, but also Kai Hansen, Micheal Kiske etc etc.
@@klauskriegbaum2795 I had the inverse experience with Ayreon, as I got to him after realizing he'd worked with pretty much everyone I was already listening to. I think either one could work well with a greatest hits album or concert, like Universe, otherwise the presence of a story, with interludes and spoken narrative probably make them less accessible. Singles are better in that respect.
@@npinjest7779 And once again I am totally with you. In my opinion Avantasia is more accessible than Ayreon, but was first hooked me where not the singers but the symphonic parts. I hadn't heard symphonic metal at that time, so when I heard Avantasia I thought, that's great, who are these singers.
the on thing I liked about Pantera is the fact they played a different set every show I attended...yeah the played their hits but it was mixed up a lot more than other bands

Ah man. I’ve always loved these guys. They’re from my home town and also part of mine and my brothers circle of friends.
As someone in their early 40s, most of the bands, I listen to are bands like Metallica, Ozzy , Pantera, Slayer, Korn, RATM, Guns N Roses, Megadeth , White Zombie, etc. older bands.
What I’ve noticed a lot of them or the ones that are still active I should say are doing here in the fourth quarter of their career. Is they get that they have a classic era of their career. To simplify it all use Metallica because everyone’s familiar with them. They get that the songs that everybody knows are really from their first five albums, yes, you do have diehards that know every song off every album but when it comes to a concert you’re gonna have a lot of casual fans and they know most of the people at that show don’t really want to hear a lot of new stuff so what Metallica has usually done for the past 15 years or so is whatever album they are touring they will play four or five songs off the new album and then the rest of it is off their first five. You’re not going to hear a whole lot of songs off the stuff that came after the year 2000 unless it’s the album they’re touring for.
Played drums for several name acts in the late 70’s through the 90”s, set list stayed intact for the most part, but there were several singers from back in the day would just call out a song out of the blue, of course this was before all the synced lighting and tapes and such, these days I’d say that’s pretty much history, I had a drum tech, on several occasions where his job w as to set up, clean and tune, and mix drinks lol

Most likely not, as a lot of the footage just didn't turn out that great, and to be honest, I pretty much just hung out with the camera off the majority of the day.
Lizzo’s show is so good. Her band is unstoppable.
Why I love Billy Strings, the Dead, Panic etc. Every setlist is different and you never know what you'll get.

funny story on the "personalities are the most challenging thing on tour" topic. I used to work for a event equipment and staff vendor and did not only work on shows, concerts and stuff like that but also quite frequently on big corporate events, trade shows etc.
And I can say even though musicians or artists in general can be a bit special to deal with, most of the time I would say the most challenging people to work with are those who are in charge for corporate events. Like people without any clue on how any of this whole event stuff works, still being arrogant and knowing everything, never make any mistakes, just because they earn ten times more than you.
I feel like the bigger to company was, the more annoying those people became to work with. Even to a point at one event where the whole crew was like: Now YOU listen to US! This does not work how you want because we would need 5 times the staff and one or two extra days for setting everything up. We will build everything as ordered and discussed beforehand and that's it, so now leave us alone or there won't be any event tonight!

i always found being in a band a lot like Hockey, not everyone is gonna make it to the big show, and at a certain point you just gotta come to terms with that and enjoy playing in the minors

My suggestion for work similar to what roadies do would be field service technician/engineer. You've already got cable management and travel life down, you'd just need to learn whatever technology the hiring company is working with.
I took a Cisco networking class and one of the first things the instructor said was to check for a bad cable. And I’m sure a lot of support calls come from something not being plugged in correctly.
I’m a guitar guy, my question is when you’re teching what problems do you run into broken parts ( nut replacements,truss rod adjustment,) have any guitar players ever said I don’t like how this action is etc.
Regarding the ticket price question, there has been some more in-depth analysis of this elsewhere (John Oliver of LastWeekTonight of all people had a very well-researched segment on this). Any economist will tell you that the "correct price" is whatever the market will bear, and there is reason to believe that Ticketmaster in some cases is willing to essentially play the bad guy for artists. Definitely check out that video.
What happens is they find out all the songs that I want them to play, and those go on a list called “never to go back on the set list”
At least trivium will just throw some curveballs in their headlining tours... usually at the shows im not at😂

I was in a band and was a stage manager at a local venue. I became a roadie when I was about 19-20, so not much room for full time work before that. Haha.

Have you ever seen opening bands get an encore? Example: When Fishbone opened for Red Hot Chili Peppers, they were prompted by the crowd to play an encore set. I never saw that before or after.

I'm a little on the older side and just getting into drumming but was wondering at what point can you call yourself a tech? Or can anyone with a little experience can get into the industry

Are things like Neural DSP and other amp modelers starting to become a thing on tour due to the ease of nature and how good they're getting?
100%. So many bands are using digital rigs on tour now because of the consistency and how easy the setup is.
So I really hope this isn't a dumb question but I've loved music my entire life & have always dreamed of helping with bands/artists I idolize but I have absolutely zero knowledge of any instrument/equipment like lighting & all that & how to make them work so is it still possible to do something on tour without having that knowledge?
Omg the ticket prices. I haven’t been to a show in almost a decade. The ticket prices for Mötley Crüe’s Farewell Tour in 2014 was INSANE. Especially the most exclusive VIP meet and greet. It was in the thousands. I saw them 3x that year and also in ‘13 during their mini Vegas residency (which was a warm up for 2014 tour in hindsight). I ran into Nikki Sixx in the parking Garage. Got an autograph and everything.
I know lots of ppl complained (rightfully so) about the $. Many could barely afford noise bleed seats. Yep. Ticket Master. But come on, know your audience. Just because it’s a reunion tour, many have to travel to the destination (like I flew to Vegas and drove 7 hours to Grand Rapid. Nashville is awesome cuz it’s about 2 hr drive, but it’s still an overnight stay in a hotel.

What is the longest time you were on the road at one time with a tour?
Longest time in one tour was about 5-6 months. But longest time was about 9-10 months because I ended one tour and went right to another one without going home.

I’m 64 and started going to concerts in the early 70’s and have been to a lot of shows over the years, of course now concerts are ridiculously expensive. my first being Three Dog Night and the Guess Who in Reno. I think it was like $6.50 and a.50 service fee. I saw your video on Ticket master and Live Nation and I couldn’t agree more. Me and a friend who have been to countless shows together are going to see Peter Frampton in August in Northern California and tickets were $96 , that’s a bargain now days. It’s funny because the last time I saw him was a Day on the Green in like 1976 I think. I went to many Day on the Greens and they were always a lot of fun and a bit crazy. I’ve been fortunate enough to see the Stones in 5 different decades. Anyway love your channel. Keep up the great work and content. Jim
I would actually like to know why you enjoy being a roadie more than playing in a band. I play in local bands and it's always been my dream to make it in the music industry. It never happened on a national level, but I've played to crowds of 100+ people, and to be honest, it's always a rush when I get to perform live for people, especially if they get into the songs (I'm also super introverted so playing live like that gives me an outlet to be more outgoing, so maybe that plays a major role in it). So I'm just curious as to why you prefer the roadie life over the band life.
Well, I was in a band for years, and we did a lot of cool stuff. Did a lot of rad tours, played huge festivals, all that stuff. One of the biggest things is that we were always broke, and after a while, living like that just takes a mental toll on you. When I worked for my first band, I just fell in love with the work. There's something I really enjoy about being in a supporting role, being counted upon, and being one of the people that sets up these shows. I still enjoy playing, but I love that I made a career out of being a roadie.

Unfortunately it also is the band, because they ( or their management ) control whether they’re opting into dynamic pricing on Ticketmaster, what percent of tickets it applies to, etc.
But in this specific case, they had no idea how ridiculous it was going to be and have even spoke out about it. Even Mark Hoppus said he went online to try and buy tickets for his own gig just to see how bad it was, and within minutes of filling out information, the ticket prices went up like 400%.
7:48 Imagine sitting in rehearsals with Tool when someone suggests: "Hey! We should play Sober for the 63,000th time."
ACDC is guilty of playing almost the entire same set list for a tour. Cheap Trick was great as if they are doing more than one night in a city, they will 90% of a different set list than the first night. The Boss of course in famous for tossing in cover songs in a concert from a band from that area

Most major tours now a days are put together by investors who package the show. Bands have some input but the investors make the major decisions and if Bands try to flex some muscle the investors just pull there money and move on to the next investment. It is all about the money, honey. Also programing light audio and video and pyro cues is countless hours just winging it rarely occurs because of the complexity of today's technology .When a band goes off script so do all other departments which never is in harmony with each other so not really a good idea on large shows.
My guess is they pick the songs they can actually play😂

They play what is rehearsed and planned out. Look at any band, they play the same songs over and over.

You can't judge a book by its cover...or a human being by its on-stage persona. So many of those beasts/weirdos/freaks on stage are actually pretty much down to earth, intelligent, polite and friendly. In a way, they do the same thing as actors do: pretend to be somebody different. I just caught myself visualizing Till Lindemann wearing Jeans and a white shirt on stage...OMG!
Some of the questions were a little bit unfair. Bringing you into the position to call out unpleasant experiences by name is not good and I liked, how you managed those (unless, of course, you really never had bad experiences).
My uncle is a country singer and he is definitely not from Nashville, not even USA, but he has been there to record an album. After all, not every grunge band was from Seattle.
Setlists, I presume, are divided into two main categories. 1: The band is promoting a new album, then it will focus on the new songs with some classics mixed in. 2: Between albums or on festivals it's probably leaning towards a best of/fan favs setlist.

How do bands pick a set list? Easy they play what songs they know well, and how a set flows with energy and breaks for the band. Not complicated.
I'll have you know! I was deadly scared of the nine inch nails perfect drug video! That fucker was Sooooo fucking ominous and creepy, that's the kind of shit I had nightmares about! I could not hear that song, or see that video! I'd hear that first strings note, and turn that off, radio and video! I'm good now! I'm not sure how I'd react if I seen Trent reznor in person.
