Les, I am just now finding your video tutorials. The visual quality of your video is clear, and your information is pointedly direct. Thank you very much. Date: March 11, 2017
I successfully made some agar for my vanilla bean. I went thru the sterilization process and initially seems to take. Now i have two questions, first - a couple of seeds have small air bubbles attached. This is okay, right (2 of the seeds appear to be sprouting). Second - i originally had the flask in sitting just in room light for a couple of days. When i moved it near my grow light (bright but not direct light), a small round white mass has started to form. Now, one seed has definitely sprouted with a couple of others looking to sprout any moment, so i would like to save them if i can. Any suggestions?
I enjoyed your video. I am in south Florida and document rare orchids for the state. I spend a lot of time photographying ghosts. Every young ghost I see has a vestigial leaf. But I heard flasked ghosts don't produce a vestigial leaf. Did your plants produce initial leaves?
I am trying to reflask cigar orchids(cyrtopodium punctatum) without much luck. You seem to be very free with alcohol. Doesn't the alcohol damage the plant if there is some on your tweezers?
Hi, I am in France and I want to know what is the transparent and black gel where we place the seeds and where we transplant the new plants. Is it possible to make it? Thanks for your reply. Daniel
I would pay whatever you're comfortable charging. It's a valuable product, which I am incapable of producing, but which I require for succeeding in what I want to do. Basically, what I'm saying is (and I know this is a terrible negotiating position), you could name your price.
Brncic Tea You mean the black media in the tubes, rite? Its actually the grwoing media for orchids available as a dried powder or even as he shows it prepared in those tubes. The black color comes from an ingridient named (steam activated) charcoal and is in there for multiple purposes. First of all it colors the media and create a light "free" space for the roots, secondly its some kind of media stabilisator and also katalyse a couple of reactions in the media and take up some toxic substances. The seeds need to be in the media until you have usefull protocorms. Those need to be transfered into larger vessels until u have plantlets of about an inch. Those need to be re-transfered into these tubes you see in the video until they have the main leave of the size of an inch...then they are able to be potted into a normal container with regular orchid substrate (p.ex. bark mulch). The media is available on certain sites, he got his from here: www.orchidspecies.co.uk/Orchid-Flask-TRANSPLANT-media-1-litre-Pack-TRANSPLANT-MEDIA-1LTR1.html
Brncic Tea I don´t actually know if his prepared tubes with media are for sale on the page i just linked you, but the tubes are. If you tell me your location i will link you a local supplier of the media.... Regards from Germany...
Brncic Tea Hi, Sorry for the delay getting back. The black material is the replate medium, it contains charcoal hence the colour. It's name is Phytamax Orchid Maintenance Medium P6668
they would never live, too small. You take from community to individual with a fresh food source as they would be running out in community. They may have come from flask with many more to get to community. They still need humidy that is best provided in flask.
You need to make up the medium with 900ml of deionized or distilled/RO water, add your medium powder and stir over gentle heat until dissolved then top up with the more water to make 1 litre in total.
Melt your media and pour it in to a measuring jug. Using either room temperature or hot water make it up to 1 litre and mix thoroughly. You will be autoclaving it next and the volume will end up less than 1 litre after that
Pretty much all orchid seed germinates within 6 weeks. Mostly you can see a green film after only 2 - 3 weeks but if anything goes longer than 3 months then I tend to bin it as it's likely they were duds
Imran Effendy You need flasks of some kind to put the medium in and sow the seeds on. I've seen a lot of places that use a glass bottle and a rubber bung with a hole in it and cotton wool plugging the hole, the entire cap is then covered with cling film and an elastic band. The problem you have though is sterilizing your medium and flask (bottle) but then the process is the same. I do not know of any alternative to agar that I've used.

Must be a small miracle for these seedlings to survive in the wild.
Hello, can you please tell me, what is the black substance in which you put the seeds at the and, and for how long seeds must bi in it?

your videos are wonderful, I was just wondering why we need to replate the flasks? can we keep them in the mother flask and go straight to a compot?
they would never live, too small. You take from community to individual with a fresh food source as they would be running out in community. They may have come from flask with many more to get to community. They still need humidy that is best provided in flask.
how much water do you need to mix 1-liter of pre-pack germination medium.
You need to make up the medium with 900ml of deionized or distilled/RO water, add your medium powder and stir over gentle heat until dissolved then top up with the more water to make 1 litre in total.
Orchid Species Do you let the additional water get hot or after mixing remove and add to flask?
Melt your media and pour it in to a measuring jug. Using either room temperature or hot water make it up to 1 litre and mix thoroughly. You will be autoclaving it next and the volume will end up less than 1 litre after that
ok thank you.
I recently started seed culture with Phalaenopsis niveum and Aerides houlettiana . Do you know how long it takes for them to germinate?

i live in africa so its hard to get sterile flasks and agar so could u help me make them from scratch so i could germinate my seeds
