What fungicide would you recommend if any for deflasking? i own varies orchids but decided on a flask this time its my first not sure about the deflasking procedure.
I was wondering how the mother flasks are created. Are the seeds sown directly into the larger plastic containers or are protocorms transplanted into the larger mother flasks? Thanks!
Austin Webb Both actually Austin. From a mother flask (where initial seeds are sown) the protocorms can be removed to other flasks (where there's a lot put in there - lets call it a daughter flask) or done individually like I did (still a daughter) - it's exactly the same just a larger second container. From the secondary (daughter flask) you can repeat the process even further (lets call that one a grand daughter flask) and keep going until there's just a few (usually 10 - 15) per flask. When I say daughter and grand daughter it's obviously not genetic, I'm talking structure not genes!
donna ford Hi Donna, I can not answer that, it depends on what the protocorms/seedlings are like and you should remember the peat was an experiment. The proper way is to replate them (which just means transplant) on to fresh agar to grow on a bit, this however has to be done under sterile conditions - there's a video on that process Les
Hi Les, thank you you answers a lot of my questions in this video. I'm taking my time and listen to all of them concerning sowing seeds,
Hello, I know this is an old video, but are those flasks with medium still available online?
i really like your videos, you are helping me a lot with my first ever orchid (Phalenopsis) sowing
Where can you get the mother flasks? Can they be made by adding 2 um filter paper to Tupperware containers?
Kind regards
Steve

Hi Les, is it safe to say after they start growing I should transplant them to individual flasks using peat moss or agar medium?
donna ford Hi Donna,

Les
Thank you Les that what I was going to do is transplant them into agar again.
do you dilute the IPA?
donna ford No, it's used neat 99%~+ pure
OK
IPA does not kill fungal spored so dont rely on that too much.
You need a bead heater or a flame to feel comfortable all the time.
