The EOS-M had been my first "legit" camera, and it came with the 18-55. Unfortunately it had been damaged in a motor accident. The lens was virtually unscathed, but (somehow) the camera sensor suffered damage that according to canon was "infeasible to repair". As a result, I then upgraded to the M6 which came with the 15-45.
Personally I prefer using the 18-55. I typically enjoy more zoomed in photography anyway, but it more just comes down to usability (am I using the word right?). The retractible locking feature in the 15-45 just feels like it gets in the way and creates unnecessary steps, meanwhile with the 18-55 all you have to do is turn on your camera and you can get right into shooting. But that's just my personal preference.

Thank you so much for this review, I was about to ship my 15-45mm to canon service center for soft pictures at 45mm but thanks to your review, I learned it's soft only when close-focusing and not when focusing on a far subject. I was doing test shots indoor and was focusing quite close on a subject. You saved me shipping cost and even more importantly, all of the hassle I would have gone through if not this review.

I am finding this lens quite good. It is a dark lens but at F6 3 the sharpness is still really good.

If you use your M camera for selfies or vlogging, you might prefer the wider angle of the 15-45. If you want the lens with a little more reach and a little better for portraits or bokeh (55mm at f5.6, vs 45mm at f6.3), then you'd want the 18-55. But as you said, there is not too much in it. The 18-55's are pretty cheap these days, less than $100

Both lenses need a looooot of light for the photos to look good. I personally detest the lock / unlock feature on the 15-45mm. 18-55 is a stop faster at long end and has better build.

15-45mm is very good for day light shooting. shooting in f7 to f8 with polarizer filter takes amazing pictures. good for outdoor shooting. it can take good sharp potraits with lower appreture but use good flash to recover brightness of subject.

15-20mm is my favorites focal length for landscapes photography especialy on 15-45 kit lens, but if you guys have a eos m3 and go for portrait you need to upgrade 50mm with adapter and Its work pretty well for me

Got the 18-55 and 22mm f2.0 lens. The 15-45 is nice for just the wide angle alone (24eq) and comes with stabilization. So I assume up to 1/8s shutter to be possible handheld. Think of museum or generally indoors situations.

Great reviews. Based on your lens reviews I bought a used Canon EOS M with the 18-55 kit lens, for 130 euros, and I'm very happy with it. It's such a fun small and inconspicuous kit.

l just got the M50 with this lens. To combat poor image quality with closeups, l mounted a 49-52mm step up adapter and the Nikon 4T close up lens. Then manually focused the lens about 2/3 of the way to it's minimum focus distance. Took a few test shots with that setup and they were pretty sharp.

Im using this lens and loved it.. its not an indoor lens tho but if you have good enough light then its decently sharp imho.. and this review is spot on.. its true that it can shoot close distance shot at 45mm but it has poor iq... this lens is good enough.. you just have to know how and when to use it, understand its strong and weak points..

Chris welcome back to old familiar ground reviewing Canon lenses. Looks like Canon wants us to buy both lenses each has it's strengths and weaknesses. I am not a potential Canon EOS buyers so these lenses won't interest me. But it is good to know where the current technology is taking us, from this review there is really no a major breakthrough. Their performance is comparable to its competitors.
Review more lenses like the new Fuji 23mm f2.0 and more importantly compared to the older 23mm f1.4. This will be very interesting.

With how cheap nifty fifties area with great aperture. The kit lens is literally a budget wide angle lens, which is why the 15-45 might be considered over the 18-55. Regardless, these kit lenses are listed online for sale EVERYWHERE they're gonna be as cheap as water soon lol

Don't buy this lens if you wish more than a point-n-shoot setup. The wide end suffers from horrible distortion and softness, the middle range is usable only during the day and the long end is always too dark for portraits. Also the retracting mechanism is pretty annoying. Buy the amazing EF-M 22mm if you wish a lightweight setup and splendid picture quality or EF-M 11-22 if you need a wide lens. This 15-45 will only discourage you from using your camera.

Disappointing, my Olympus has this same kind of locking kit lens and it frustrated me to no end. You either walk around with the camera turned on and the lens deployed all the time or you miss shots because there are to many steps required to get the camera ready. I finally bit the bullet and bought the olympus PRO lens.
I have made some very nice photos with the 18-55 on my EOS M, it is a very nice lens, and it works as soon as you turn on the camera, no additional steps.

    • @stevestruthers6180

This is one reason why I like the kit lens on my Sony a6000. It's a power zoom lens that extends automatically when you turn the camera on, and retracts when you turn it off.

No lens adapter needed if you're mounting it to an M series camera. My 15-45 is exactly as Chris reviewed it sharp in the middle but soft on the edges which doesn't bother me. I used it a couple off weeks ago to take a quick portrait of my wife and it came out perfectly usable/printable. As far as bokeh goes I've never been a fan of heavy bokeh I want to be able to provide visual context to where the photo is taken and this lens does just that.

Hi there! I have a Canon 60D and I've been using it with a lot of fun for 3 years. Now, I make videos myself and I LOVE a blurry / bokeh background, but I just can't seem to find a good lens that isn't ridiciously expensive (above €500 - ish) and where the MM isn't too high since my room isn't very big, so the distance can't be a lot. So what I'm looking for exactly is a lens that can be quite close to me (about 1 to 2 meters max away from me) and where I can get the desired bokeh effect. I was just asking because on Canon's website [go to goo.gl/5zeMeP and scroll down to the Dogital IS details in "Features"] it says that maximum image stabilization is achieved when using either the new 18-150mm or the 15-45mm with the lens firmware update. So, I am worried that it might not work as well with my EF-M 18-55mm. What do you think?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  8 лет назад

Hmm. No idea, I'm afraid, but, I presume that's the case, if Canon are saying it themselves. It does surprise me, though.

Christopher Frost Photography I already own the 18-55 and the 22mm so I was planning on buying just the body and not buying the 15-45, but I guess I will have to just because of that. Really frustrating Canon!
Anyway, thank you for immediately responding and I really like you videos, congrats!

That's okay. If the M5 shot video in 4K I would have pre-ordered one already by now (I seriously need 4K video). It's sure to be an amazing camera!

Thank you. Which lens and setting do you recommend using the new Canon M50 Mark II for live streaming and wishing for a 'skin smoothing/ forgiving' effect as well as a 'lovely' bokeh background. I currently have the kit that comes with the 15-45mm lens. I would love to hear your remedy!

Yep! they probably cost $1 to make. Plastic mounts just don't last. It a pity as the 18-55 is such a solid build

Regarding 15-45mm, is it safe to assume 20-40mm @ F5.6 to F8 is distortion free zone?

Not distortion free, but much lower distortion

I recently bought a Canon M6 with the kit 15-45mm lens and found myself very disappointed.
In terms of cosmetics and physical build quality, the M6 is fairly well-built. The menu system is simple and straightforward and the camera is fairly easy to operate.
However, I found the M6 kit lens to be not nearly as sharp or bright as the kit 16-50mm lens on my Sony a6000. I'd say that even at maximum aperture, the lens underexposes by at least 1 to 1.5 stops. I also found the 15-45mm lens to have significant and noticeable smearing and distortion at all focal lengths in the corners and off-centre areas.
I also noticed that the camera itself offers somewhat less dynamic range than my Sony a6000 does. In addition, the sensor seemed to produce limp, almost washed-out colours, not like the warm, rich colours I knew when I owned a Canon T2i in 2015. Perhaps the colour change has something to do with the fact that a newer sensor and processing engine are being used. Or something else is going on.
In any case, I promptly returned the M6 to the store where I bought it. I was so disappointed because I really wanted to like the M6. I bought the camera as a means to access a wider range of much more affordable lenses.
Most of Sony's few e-mount offerings for the alpha-series cameras are overpriced, with the exception of the kit lens and the 55-210mm zoom. The few e-mount lenses offered by third-party manufacturers like Sigma aren't substantially better.
Maybe if Canon brings out a M6 Mark II and improves the EF-M range of lenses and their latest crop of sensors, I might revisit the prospect of buying a mirrorless Canon camera.

Steve Struthers ; if you want sharp corners then you are Describing a point and Shoot like the sony mirror less cameras are famous for : then sony line is for you , the canon m6 is a Real Mirror less Camera , I personally like the soft corners they are meant to be that way in real photography , then you must hate a Prime Lens where basically the whole pic outside the target zone is blurred, sony has probably the most AF Points in the market , and it shows in there "Point and Shoot Type " looking Pictures ,that's why people who appreciate photography usually go with Canon or Nikon ,to leave the Point and Shoot Syndrome beginner mentality behind them and grow in photography , my friend I am not to put you down but help you to see how beautiful photography can be with a good camera , please do not be brain washed by other Canon , Nikon Haters out there , and go backwards to the Point and Shoot photograph mentality and call it great Pictures...when in reality are just Static Pictures..good Luck Steve in your Hunt for a Good Camera.

The 18-55mm lens has the best image stabilization for hand held video work. The 15-45 has the widest possible angle of view.

The 15-45 lens is quite wide in 15, but in the most scene,45 is not enough. I would use 18-150, that's an dilemma for me.
