What tips do you have for getting the most out of museum visits?
Correction: It is the George C. Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits, not the Natural History Museum, that displays the Dire Wolf Skulls - tarpits.org/topics/dire-wolves
Arrive at museum when it opens.
Go on days they stay open late
I used to work in the Museum of Art History in Vienna, which are frequented by a lot of tourists. Avoid weekends if possible and the time from 11am to 2pm is probably the best time with the least amount of visitors. I enjoyed working there, because the Museum has the largest collection of Bruegel paintings, which I could enjoy in the morning by myself.
One time only museum visits is all about the feel for me - the packaging (as you put it) and the crowd; as well as pieces the reach out to me. Second day is more about observation and, if people are discernibly comfortable, asking for their observations and insights. Those are my favorite museum visit strats.
Don't go with Stan 😂
56:37 - 57:08
"He sent me a bunch of pictures and they were all blurred like he was sprinting through here!"
That's hilarious. The blurred hallway with the tilted camera killed me.
This episode was so fun. It felt like I was on the field trip too.
after finding out the podcast was ending i avoided watching this episode, almost to preserve it. it was really nice to finally watch this six months later after missing the regular uploads. loved seeing cooper and quinn hanging out with marshal too!
draftsmen was something special, thank you guys for putting so much into it💙
I think museums are undervalued, but they put so much beauty and art and value, feelings into the world that internet can't provide even if showing the same art.
I also think your show offered same good values, so I'll miss it pretty much!
Let's hope the last 2 episodes will be like 5+5 hours long to enjoy :D
Yea idk if you guys want the podcast to be hardcore wisdom 100% of the time but I really enjoy listening to you guys just interact with each other. I remember when all the proko videos were only skelly skits and anatomy explanations. Just hearing you guys talk about stuff is fun. A bonus to hear some cool knowledge stuff. Also in one of the recent podcasts someone mentioned the Einstein factor, would be neat if you guys eventually did something with it.
YES
I loved the kids interactions at the end, so genuine and enthusiastic how Cooper wants Marshalls attention 😂😂🥰
Great advice from marshall on composition. That shadow vs light thing is really great.
Filter out all the discussion about podcasting itself, and this was fabulous. Marshall, I selfishly hope you keep carrying this ball after Draftsmen ends. (Stan, I still love you and am RICH for the courses I've bought from you. Way underpriced!)
"you're making an argument against art"
Really called Stan out on that one, lol
He's right though. Great artists get pissed off at what they produced as opposed to what they were looking at while producing. Monet used to wreck paintings as he was so frustrated at what he was producing.
Draftsmen vlog going to all the museums in the world with Marshall, now!
I actually really enjoyed the Cesar Santos museum trip! I think it helped that you guys did studies in that one.
Oh my god, Marshall description of haystack was exactly what i felt, i love you
Cute episode
I liked the energy being outside added. Stan always seems a little uncomfortable. It’s part of his personality but it can be charming. And Marshal is adorable when he’s swooning over art
I think marshall is right about doing the podcast from a museum. And it’s because he understands what he does with students at a museum. Also: Stan’s previous experience may not have gone as well, but marshall and stan have earned the good will from the audience to be open to such a broadcast. Talking about these paintings and looking at them is a great time from my experience. I never have enough time to at the Getty, the few times I’ve been there. Getting a trip with marshall and Stan is a productive and enjoyable experience.
Marshal Swooning over Art for a whole hour, hell yeah !
This was one of my favorites! I visited the Getty about 10 yrs. ago with my niece who worked there. It brought back great memories. I loved the room where visitors can draw a statue in sort of a classroom like atmosphere. Stan...the one when you and Santos visited the museum and drew a Sargent was another of my favorites! More museum visits, please!
I only have one request. Please don't ever take these podcasts down. I rewatch certain episodes a lot. Always learning something new from the two of you even when I've watched the podcast four times. And there is some great stuff in here. I couldn't agree more about artists statements or what's written by academics that I can barely read that stuff now. It quite often detracts from the work.
Everything you said from the buildings to the stairs is right on. Even the stairs are designed right. My ex her dad did the stairs and railing design.
I just wanted to elaborate on the “Spanish Steps” ; they’re designed short height wise and very deep footprint because you can actually ascend and look around as you step normally. This makes going up effortless while not having to look down from fear of tripping. Try it next time, it’s a bit unnerving but you’ll find it so possible. Just keep a hand on the railing!
Thank you so much for this podcast, I visited the Getty Center yesterday with friends, and I love this place, I don't know much about arts but I am going to revisit this place next week with my son in spring break. After watching your video, I gained more knowledge about the museum and the arts. Thank you guys!
2 great humans who like art 👍. I cant believe this is the last season. 😔
You are too hard on yourself, Stan. Your visit to a museum with Cesar Santos was great.
Agreed I love it
Agree. What Stan didn't like about it were the reasons I loved it. I loved watching them just stand around and talk about art and do a study.
Bless Marshall, he always seems awkward in front of a camera
I enjoyed this immensely
If you have time go twice, first to have a general overview and then go back to take your time with select ones you want or need to see with more time. Semiotics (french discursive studies) can give you the framework for visit or building materials for it.
I am envious of your accessibility to these exceptional museums.
marshalls profile view is so wise and balanced..
I would love an episode where you just talk about and analyze artwork pieces like when you did with that bouguereau painting. It was really enlightening and educative.
A whole podcast of that sort of talk would be heaven! And Stan obviously felt it wasn't exciting enough. What a shame.
I would love to see you take a trip to the National Gallery in London. Absolutely love that place, and it's worth talking about.
33:51 "Get away, quickly!" Marshall served her well
i think it went great i loved this dont over think it stan
Two minutes in, and I already love this episode!
Man you guys are great. Seriously going to miss this. Great team.
i could spend all day looking at you talk to each other about art or any other subject
Marshal should definitely man the wheel for museum vlogs... Was that Degas on pumice?
Marshal and I are stupidly similar. I would also stand there and watch a singular painting for 30 minutes and repeat for days on end.
The comercial at the beginn was great 😂🤣
I’m so excited about the Lucas narrative art museum. Last time I was in L.A., I went to the natural history museum when it struck me that I was looking at the Lucas museum under construction. That was so exciting because I hadn’t even heard if construction had begun yet.
I think Marshall was talking about the D'Orsay not the Dorset museum lol
Getting the most out of a visit? The Getty exhibit catalogues are so good I often order and review them in advance. I buy some many books from them shipping is not an issue.
It's almost upon us! The end is nigh! 😰🤯
But it will be okay. 🤫
waiting for the museum tour from Louvre :)
Good ep - turn a sow's ear into a generally enjoyable purse.
All the same, I can't believe you got all the way to the end of the podcast without putting a beard on Marshall in the titles. He looks like John Lithgow.
I want a recording of Marshall reading a book.
Their description of going to the Getty reminds me of Hiroshima MOCA. Its truly an amazing experience going there.
You need to walk about a hill shrouded in trees and plants and peaking through the trees is a twisted house melted in the bombing of Hiroshima (Sanyo Buntoku-den Memorial Hall) and as you go up there is this peaceful yet heavy feeling. It feels like the beginning of Spirited Away, going deeper into the forest.
Then you get to the top and there's a manga museum and this big metallic building which is MOCA.
I went there every weekend just for that feeling going up the hill (also manga library is cool)
Edit: There is also Hiroshima Art Museum which is significantly less impressive and somehow got almost only unfinished versions of famous paintings. Its pretty but it feels more like a hangout spot than a place to admire art.
If you ever go be careful about which one you're going to. MOCA is harder to get to (maybe 20 min from the station on foot) than Hiroshima Art Museum (maybe 5 min from tge station on foot).
MOCA is in Hijiyama park! Google that and you'll get the feel
... i didnt know about Bouguereau...thaanks!
I wish u guys have an experience on the Inhotim Institute! Magical place for artists!
This was kinda cool.
Stan, checkout Museum of Fine Arts Boston for some of Sargent's work in their permanent collection.
Lol. The sour look on Marshall's face when he speaks about LA covered in concrete and asphalt and police and criminals. 🤣
I think Marshall meant the Musee D'Orsay not the Dorset Museum (I could be wrong though)
You're right about that
I'll have to check the Getty Museum out one of these days? Anyone recommend the experience?
I'm cracking up because Stan is ever the pessimist and Marshall the optimist. Just listen to the talk about stairs lol
Edit: And Cooper reminds me so much of my nephew when he was a little wild darling back in the day 😂.
He too was full if energy. Now my nephew is 15 and keeps to himself. Probably thinking about love or whatever teens think about lol.
The Getty is awesome! You only have to pay for parking. Pack a lunch and eat by the garden. Climb the stairs in the back left till you can't go anymore and enjoy the view of the ocean.
the architecture is gorgeous. they have tours for architecture and the garden. they have some very good exhibits. photography tends to be most modern (depending on the show) but the masters are pretty great. I've seen a JMW Turner show and James Ensor show there in the past. only parking is pricey (and if you eat in their cafeteria/restaurant)
🎶Doot doo doo diddily doo doot doodle doot doo 🎵 It's the Draftsmen show🎷
I don't want this to end T__T
Also this is a great idea (but should be kept as a tour by marshal of the pieces he liked)
What is that at 58:58
Regarding virtual museum experience, Radiohead released a video game exhibition called Kid A Mnesia. It's an amazing experience specially if you like Radiohead :)
Limit how much you intend to view or experience in a set amount of time.
Is it normal for museums in america to be THAT cool.
:D!
0:05
I feel like Stan is taller than I thought he was…
Marshall (who wants to spend 30 mins per painting) vs the world
I'm convinced Stan doesn't like art ?
Marshall pumped full of medication at the museum: :)
M: The Shimmering vale of dreams...
S: OK, well now that sounds like a bunch of B.S.
M: ...Thank you.
🤣 🤣 🤣
I hate museums. I hope one day we can get rid of them all. If you think that culture needs to be publicly accessible, simply take part in it rather than fetishizing. Nauseating.
Yah...I, too, can't wait for the day when we're all going to share your mindcuffs. Great times ahead. Hope it's the same day when we're going to burn all books and libraries. Simply write yourself rather than fetishize other people's books. =P
I think looking at paintings counts as taking part in the culture
I love museums. I'd never get to see a range of old and new art if they didn't exist.
