I will give you a very simple answer why Indians in Kenya do not feel Kenyan. It is because for generations, you Indians in Kenya have isolated yourselves and intermarried yourselves in Parklands, Pangani, and Ngara and have remained the minority. To be a Kenyan, you have to mingle, intermarry with locals and assimilate with the local culture. To be a Kenyan as well, you have to study under the Kenyan educational system, and to be a Kenyan, you have to view the rest of Kenyans as equals instead of pretending that Indians have something special. Nothing is special under the sun.
Manhil Qureshi may your future be bright. Kenyan hospitality has bestowed on you great privileges, please 'give back' by advocating for the Sidi Community who are perpetually marginalized by your people back in India.
If Indian kids were born in Kenya and have no connection to India...They had nothing to do with liberation....where do they belong? How is it their fault? You're discriminating against them in a country they love and grew up in. This backwards mentality will get you nowhere.
There were Indians who owned shops back during the independence struggle shared whatever they had with Mau Mau fighters. Pio Gama Pinto tried negotiating with the British to stop killing Mau Mau fighters and was locked up in Lamu together with some Mau Mau fighters. He rejected special treatment, slept in the same cell with them and shared the same food. Pio Gama Pinto died because he confronted Jomo for stealing land from his own Kikuyu community. These are things that happened but we were never taught in school.

You are only Kenyan coz your Pep's got business here...n you don't alot of options..To be anything else..... Wait you still can't speak Swahili...?! Kenyan indeed
Straight Indians yes that's how others (local Kenyans) sees us. There are many many reasons why Indians or indian kenyans have never intermarried with locals, For this you need to understand how us Indians are. There are Indian-Indians and there are Indian-Kenyans, talking bout the local Indian kenyans we have a strong cultural presence more than any other religion. The culture that has been passed on from one generation to another and to the next. This has been going on for hundreds of years. no matter where we have traveled to Be it food, clothes, how we live, language, religion, family, spiritual, weddings, clothes there is so much to us than just the name Indian. Cross cultural marriages do happen but with Indians its very difficult and most dont work out. Most indians live with their family (parents, uncles, grand parents) where as the African culture is different and this things don't blend. Reason why you see many whites/mzungus marrying Africans? they have many things in common and easy to adapt including religion. About speaking swahili its a national language but when ever we talk or are approached by locals people talk in English or Indians talk in their mother tongue we never get to practice. Where do we go speak Swahili to? At home its our mother tongue or English same with outside. Like i mentioned early indians have a strong cultural base so things we do when we are out what er celebrate are all cultural where does Swahili fit in? There is nothing you know. The water is deeper than you see on the surface! Before judging know us!
I’ve never understood how Indians in East Africa mange to keep their accent, even though many have never stepped foot in India, and then claim to be African 🙄
@@Maameelle78 Its passed on from on to the other.. The same reason how Indians in Uk are slowly forgetting their mother tongue because they dont speak/practice or are ashamed of it. Its phasing out. Here in Kenya its strong. Bond is strong between communities.

It’s not racism. It’s disheartening to see these people whom we have welcomed disrespecting and looking down on the people whose land they live on. The problem is not their being around but how they relate with the indigenous people. Being welcoming does not mean that you allow yourself to be trampled upon.

Am surprised at all the negative comments. As a Kenyan living in diaspora, I can quite identity with where she is coming from, especially where a land feels like home but in some eyes, you don't belong. She is inspiring in finding herself in the flag that in origin does not include her. As brothers and sisters under one sky, as a people previously enslaved, we should not continue to carry the torch of hatred and bigotry and old hurts else we will never move forward but continuously build new wounds for the next generations to carry. I understand social media provides a platform to voice our opinions but can we should not use it to make hateful speech, we can educate and/or disagree without negativity and hostility can we not?
The problem is not Kenyans but the Indians who refuse to integrate, have their own schools and their HINDU only real estates which cannot be Kenyan. And when you ask they say they pay taxes.
