I hope this is a hit, I need it to be a hit. I'm so tired of this idea that action is the future and turn based is the past so almost every game is some slight remix of the same tired action combat while turn based games are lucky to get the crumbs leftover for a budget. I'm about to buy SMT 5 again with the new version just to support the genre with my wallet.

Agreed, ff13 gameplay was great with the paradigm system and everything. The problem is they locked off a lot of the systems until late in the game, and the party constantly changed so you couldn’t get the most out of it.

      @@jairekambui7738 I really don't get this criticism.
The way I see it, each chapter is its own challenge, where you're handed a set of tools and you're expected to make the most out of them to beat that chapter.
That's not really locking off the game's systems, it's just giving you the systems relevant to a current challenge.
It's your job as the player to figure out how to most effectively utilize the paradigms and moves at your disposal- this still applies before you reach Pulse, and after you reach Pulse. It's just that after you reach Pulse, you're suddenly given more room to experiment, at which point you should be familiar with what different combinations are capable of in ways you might not have considered if you were given this choice early on and got too used to your comfort zone.

the graphics, world design, and battle system look incredible. honestly, this might have some of the best environments I've ever seen in gaming and I'm personally so glad they're not sticking to purely medieval which people equate to what fantasy is for some reason. What UE5 is capable of doing is insane. It's wild we've gotten to the point that games look like what those FFX FMVs look like, if not even better in ways. I've been wanting a fantasy AAA turn based game for what, around 15 years now? so grateful for this studio for taking the plunge. hoping the people crying out for for turn based show up for this game to prove to SE and other studios that there is indeed an audience for this and that turn based is NOT outdated, just needs to be executed correctly with modern touches and interesting mechanics
also fun fact: the director and ben starr are both huge fans of FF8, so it's great to see that passion for JPRGs there. also, this is another chance for ben starr to win an award for his performance which I think he surely deserves

    • @spugelo359

The some reason is that when you make a game that looks too much like what our world looks like today, it feels less like fantasy. Rather than fantasy it would feel more like re-imagination of the modern day than a day dream. Just reminding that although it is not medieval, it is still a good 100-150 years into past when times were completely different. Just look at the damn clothing! Almost no person these days wears anything even remotely as nice looking. It's all just copy pasta garbage, a wide variety of garbage but still garbage.

Same here. I know it's an unpopular opinion but, to me, incorporating QTE's and "rythm game elements" into turn based combat defeats the purpose of the exercise. It's like a turn-based/action hybrid and I frankly never was into that. The whole point of turn based games is that they're not action games imo.

Something to keep an eye on, but tbh it sounds like they've equivocated too much. It doesn't sound very turn based if success in combat is going to require nonsense like QTE's, twitch aiming, and timed dodges. That's just an action combat systems in disguise.
The entire reason turn based is fun is because it is thoughtful and tactical. Baldur's Gate didn't sell in spite of its combat. It sold because of it. Hell the combat is 80% of the game. Without it it's just a trashy romance novel in a high fantasy setting.
Hopefully there's a fun system in there despite the likely ill fated attempt at broader appeal. Game devs need to learn that sometimes niche appeal is OK.

It's beautiful, I'll give it that. The story sounds absurd in a typical JRPG (or inspired by) way. Which could be a good or bad thing depending on who you ask.
The combat...looks neat. A lot of LO-inspirations, as mentioned. Still too early to tell on that front.
One thing I really didn't like are the character designs. Everyone looks both too similar and are not particularly interestingly designed. Almost boring.
And I'm going to be real, the glassy stare from some of the characters are a bit jarring.

Honestly this whole, turn based games aren't popular anymore narrative has been a lie pushed by the AAA industry in my opinion with how popular Persona and Star Rail is. The real issue is that the AAA industry wants empty open worlds to drive up playtime, but as the financial issues grow I see turn based games making a comeback since they can push fidelity while not wasting millions on giant empty worlds that are really falling out of favour.

  • @AAbattery444
    @AAbattery444 3 месяца назад +1

Been noticing a lot of discussion about the struggles of AAA studios recently. Development costs are insane, profits aren't keeping up, and the whole model seems shaky.
This got me thinking about the term "AAA" itself. You know, the big-budget blockbusters? It turns out AAA comes from finance, where it means "safest bet." But with today's crazy costs, are AAA games really safe bets anymore?
In finance, credit ratings use letters (AAA, AA, etc.) AAA is super secure, while Double-B is risky. Think of AAA games as those high-risk, high-reward investments now. The potential for massive profits is there, but the chance of flopping is much higher too.
Maybe "AAA" doesn't quite fit anymore. Considering the costs and risks, maybe these games are more like Triple-B or even Double-B in the financial world. They're still big-budget, but with a higher chance of not being the guaranteed wins they used to be.

The most successful turn-based RPG in recent years, or perhaps all time, would be Honkai Star Rail. Clost to a billion downloads and over 1.5 billion dollars every year, an amount of money that less than 1% of games make in their entire lifetime, and this game makes it in a year.
I know, I know, you guys only care about the West, it's why you keep bringing up the Game Award, but even in the West that game still makes hundreds of millions of dollars a year. It's one of the rare games that is heavily successful in both the West and East; the game "Dungeon Fighter Online" is the most successful MMO of all time, it beats WoW on almost every metric of success, but since it's only successful in the East, most Westerners don't even know that it exists. It sure as heck ain't gonna win that entirely Western-centric Game of the Year award, that's for sure.

I think FF9 remake (if it's a thing) should be done in the originals CG art style. In other words gameplay should look like the OGs cut scenes. A new ff should be done in a Yoshitaka Amano art style, or something like that. It should NOT have realistic graphics. It will be as visually boring as the last 2 FFs. FF needs style.

I don't mind turn-based games as I grew up with them but I'm certainly more into action-based combat. With the fact that you need to grind in pretty much EVERY RPG I find that the most important aspect to that is that I enjoy my time grinding. People throw around Balder's Gate 3 as an example of a great turn-based game but if I'm honest the turn-based combat is probably one of the things I liked about the game THE LEAST. Really, that game shines due to it's fantastically evolving narrative storytelling and VO work. That being said, this is a game that immediately caught my interest in that they seem to be doing something MORE with turn-based combat and my only hope at this point is that they release a demo before the games comes out because there's NO WAY I'm buying this game without either playing it myself or hearing from someone who's opinion that I trust showcase the parts of the game being played that I would spend the most time with. RPGs are a HUGE time investment when time is at a premium in my life so I really need to know going in that just doing the normal gameplay repeatedly is really fun in the long-term.

just saw the trailer, idk how I missed it. Ya, I LOVE turn based games, NOT JUST FF franchise, but Dragon Quest, Shining Force 1 and 2, Phantasy Star 1-4. Breath of Fire 1-4. There is NO EXCUSE why we can't get a very graphic quality game and still keep a turn based fighting style, a game like this. This is solid proof that it still can work. Mario RPG, even the remake in 3d worked!.....They are even bringing back and making another Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga sequel thats gonna be turned based! I am rly happy about that. OH and Pokemon games are STILL turn based, in case ppl somehow forgot, Pokemon Franchise NEVER went open battle system EVER

I'm so sick and tired of ppl thinking turn based combat can't work in a modern AAA gaming..last time I checked the biggest IP on the planet is based in a bog standard turn based combat game..with game mechanics that has barely evolved since the 90s when it came out.
yes its Pokemon ..and I think there's tons of gamers that grew up on that combat system and is looking for a grown-up version of that combat...
If pokemon ever evolved its system and adopted the ATB system from FF5-9 and add actions can interrupt or tank other actions the game would be a revolution and take over the world all over again.
