I dont know what they expected, honestly. If you look at how many people actually finished remake and crunch the numbers, how many people ended up buying Rebirth checks out. It's not a standalone game, and thus it was never going to sell as much as the first entry. And that is not even taking into consideration that much fewer people own a ps5 than ps4, and that we currently live in a time when a lot of households are struggling financially.
So yeah, reconsidering that exclusivity deal is probably a good idea.

I honestly love Remake and Rebirth, and I'm 100% in the camp that believes future mainline games should be looking to them for cues moving forward. The hybrid action/ATB combat systems are incredible with a ton of potential, and I think Rebirth does a lot right with its world and setting in a way that FEELS very open world-esque without sacrificing story. And rather than feeling aesthetically pleasing but empty and lifeless like a lot of big games do, Rebirth is full of life and absolutely packed with stuff to do. There's room for improvement for sure, but I think it's going in the right direction.
I enjoyed FFXVI, but personally I just don't think it's the direction the series should be going. FFVIIR is where it's at as far as I'm concerned.

Plus all the stuff you could do in Rebirth was crazy. Sure the mini games were a bit much but the option is there for stuff to do. Plus the battle system was top notch with all the options you had for attacks and the like. I personally loved 16 but I'll even admit that if it had a system like Rebirth had it would make a great game even better

Its amazing how people can have different takeaways. i feel like the way they did the open world felt very "UbisoftOpenWorldTM" And i think it took away from the game, making it feel more like a chore because it makes you feel like you HAVE to explore, but a lot of what you are doing is just Samey and unrewarding in a lot of cases and i certainly hope they don't do that again with the 3rd. also i feel like the story (especially later) was just lazily planned and written the way it was just to was off any criticisms/questions of the game and potentially the future one with "multiverse timelines" the combat is a better direction but i don't want that to just be the way forward. FF has always been consistently changing itself and i feel they SHOULDN'T stick with it but keep innovating.
One thing they SHOULDN'T do is FF16 battle again!

@@kyteurisuke4429 I think in my case, I felt there was enough variety in the gameplay that some of the more repetitive things didn't bug me too much. It definitely did get overwhelming occasionally, having so much to accomplish, but I just sort of paced myself and largely enjoyed the experience. Personally I also didn't find it unrewarding. Everything went toward upgrading characters or party in some significant way, so I felt a sense of satisfaction in completing different tasks. Plus I largely felt the sidequests were much improved on Remake, with more interesting NPCs and character-focused interactions. I DO< however, think it would be kind of cool to see FF games in the future go back to having more secrets to find rather than just having everything marked on a map before you get there. Kind of takes away some of the magic, imo. Like I mentioned, definitely room for improvement!
The story is another beast entirely and there's a reason I didn't dwell on it lol. I thought the multiverse thing had potential in Remake --- feeling a lot more nervous after this one. I'm trying not to worry about it too much and just enjoy the ride. I don't think story in PARTICULAR is something where future FF needs to take cues from VIIR, but I do think the character interactions and relationship building is top notch. And I think the story apart from a few things here and there is fine up until a somewhat muddled ending.
In any case, I don't mean to say I just want the combat from now on to ALWAYS just be modeled after Remake. But personally I feel like it's a good place to take inspiration from going forward. Remake and Rebirth have my favorite combat system in probably the whole series. I just find it to be a blast in a way I've never experienced with any other game. And I do think there's more they could do with it.

Square Enix expectations are too high.
Final Fantasy, while a recognised Japanese RPG name, is still very niche among the vast industry of mainstream games. Top that with Rebirth being a sequel of a remake within a remake trilogy, and then top that with exclusivity, it adds to how non-mainstream and niche it is. FFXVI on the other hand is a new game which is more unknowable to FF fans and it shifted away from conventional FF systems which, while in an attempt to have broader appeal as an action game, actually made it more niche also.

Precisely all of this, and to add to it the core gamers of late 90s / early 00s have, for lack of better wording, aged and lost interest in gaming. It's just a natural evolution of gaming and behaviors in general. The reason why games like Fortnite stick is because they are designed to be addictive for new generations to come and it adds content constantly. Plus they are no-brainer games (minimizing it, it's shoot targets), whereas RPG require a bit more brain power.

Square Enix has for the last 15 years had pretty terible profit considering their revenue numbers. So they're objectively underperfoming, but I have to agree that I don't really think the sales are the issue. I think the real issue is that they're spending too much making the games. A lot of their games over the last 15 years have also had a lot of trouble during development and I think that is the real cost they need to cut. They need their operation to run smoother.

Its a bit in the middle I’d say, I see tons of big name content creators mention Final Fantasy. Everyone that plays games somewhat hardcore knows about it. Yet the people that engage with it are less numerous these days. Its also heavily fragmented from spitefull OG fans, shippers, new age FF weebs, specific CBU fans, console vs PC etc. They just have to find a way to combine these numbers.
I also really doubt FF7R cost them the most money since this was made in record time and these are still pretty underpayed devs compared to lazy spoiled western devs.
The issue is SE wants to be a big player yet their entire offering is JRPGs meaning they will always be the sub top of publishers.

Everyone is wrong. In reality there are three, simultaneously correct, interpretations. There's the original timeline interpretation where FF games sell well. There's the Sephiroth timeline interpretation where FF16 and FF7 Rebirth failed to meet sales expectations. And then there's the Zack timeline interpretation, where nobody actually knows anything and the Unknown Journey Continues.
Memes aside though, I think it's pretty obvious these games underperformed. And that will be due, in large part, to them being released exclusively on a platform with a relatively small install base at a time when people are hurting economically. It's not an indictment of the games themselves, just a symptom of the circumstances in which they were released.

Most core gamers just play PC these days (the ones that will buy and play Wukong, Space Marine 2, Baldurs Gate 3 etc not beholden to any genre or IP).
The PS5 is a nightmare for everyone involved. Name me one franchise that actually grew their IP on PS5? Its the platform which is the kiss of death for your game series. If you want to grow community, fans and expand your player base you need PC, you need Steam.

FF 15 sold very well because it was a multiplatform title from the beginning. FF7 Remake/Rebirth got hurt because of the 6 month PS exclusivity and then the extra 6 month exclusivity on Epic store hurts them financially. So anyone who wanted the game on Steam (which is the biggest platform on PC) had to wait over a year for the game to be released. There's also the fact that they wasted a ton of money on NFTs and other failed life service projects. A lot of their mobile titles weren't profitable.

The real reason FF tries to do different things is because SquareEnix is always trying to be like whatever is popular at the moment.
For example: GTAV is the biggest selling game of all time, so they add a car to FFXV. Game of Thrones becomes popular, they make a M-Rated FF game. They even made that Fortnite-style game set in FF7. FF7Rebirth is great but has all these open-world game cliches like towers that reveal stuff on the map. They even named the healer a "medic" in FFXIII because of the popularity of military shooters at the time.

Ff13 i dont really need to comment on because most people dont like it. Ff7 remake split the fanbase and lord foamstars was never going anywhere. There's also a big list of other failures. Square doesnt have a good reputation at the moment and they need to fix internal issues. Yes, releasing on other consoles would help for sure, but it's not the majorly of their problem as a company.

I remember something that NSP said years ago while playing Shadowbringers that really stuck true to me. It was that it felt like for a very long time that Final Fantasy as a series was no longer for me. I really didn't like the direction the series took with 13, 15 and all the 7 games after 7. But then FF14 was like finding a new home. I think that for a lot of the people who were unsatisfied with the direction that FF7R went in did not go out and rush to buy a PS5. The people who miss the darker tone of the Ivalice games, who enjoyed the politics in 12, who like the dark and morally complex themes in 14 were on PC and not on PS5 and are playing FF14. It was a refuge for those of us who are not fans of the Nomura/Tabata era of FF. Making sure that the majority of the FF14 playerbase that is on PC couldn't go and play FF16 was such a dumb decision.
Another thing that YoshiP said before 16's release was that he thought that the prestige of FF had gone down in years and most kids know Fortnite more than FF. And that's true. So having FF7 Remake be so totally alienating to anyone who didn't play FF7 with all the time ghosts and alternate timelines that require you to watch Advent Children to understand just drove away anyone new to the series. And FF16 didn't have that same legacy to draw on anymore because people look at it as "the game that comes after FF15". 16 needed that multiplat release in order to reach as many people and regain fans because it simply is not the prestige series that people go and buy consoles for anymore, no matter how deluded the relatively small player base of FF7 fans think it is.

    1. Celebrate the quality and passion these devs are putting out and cherish this. Things weren’t always like this back in the FF13/15 days.
    2. Double, triple down on multi platform, Steam especially, and the growing of IP through other entertainment media and community methods.
Thats it. No rethinking game design. No changing of gameplay systems again. No shrinking to AA quality. None of that stuff that will only confuse and muddy SE’s course for another decade.
Double down on established quality and accessibility world wide. Nothing else. The sales will come. The happy and positive fanbase will grow.

Exactly. 16's sales problems are entirely because of the console exclusivity problem. Rebirth's are more fundamental, I think the FF fanbase is split between liking time ghosts and hating them, and the people that hate time ghosts will never go back to the series, but all you really need is to start growing the brand again after 13 and 15 killed it. YoshiP acknowledged this and still made 16 console exclusive then wondered where all the sales were.

@@GetterRay I think everyone didnt forsee how much of a hurdle and different audience the PS5 would be. This decision was made for PS4. Now granted the first FF7R game sold averagely on that system too. But it was still decent, got to that number fast and since doubled in sales.
I really dont think the time ghosts thing is an issue man. I keep hearing this and it really makes me roll my eyes. Yes they are there, you dont have to like it. But its not the end of the world if you can split the OG and Remake apart in your head.
Remakes never sell to the mass crowd. The point of them is to bridge the gap between new mainline releases and reinvigorate IP. Simply said, FF7R was never going to do Elden Ring numbers and neither would any other FF Remake, no matter how faithfull or samey. But FF17 might pull that off if it does something similar to BG3/Elden Ring.
Its just the nature of remakes. They do well but never become cultural events. People just like to use the sales of FF7R to vent on their frustrations.

To be fair, graphics, character design and combat were top notch in FF7 remake, it was "just" the story that got ruined. Had they made a faithful recreation of FF7 with remake's combat, characters, graphics etc. it'd have sold like hotcakes and been praised as one of the greatest games of all time as it should. After all, it'd just be following the footsteps of the original but packing with even more content.

    • @mikev8746
      @mikev8746 Месяц назад

@@thedukeofdeathpt6262 I would argue that the story changes can be split up in two things. Small changes that had to be made to improve/properly translate to modern AAA presentation and pacing. And larger changes added to expand the story and introduce uncertainty.
While its true that outside of the realities of IRL game development, budgets and sales numbers you have to deal with while making a trilogy, theres little reason to change the story in ways they did. And not liking that is a fair point. But I also think you can easily look past that if you lose your attachment to the original and also admit we dont know how much it has really changed yet. But its still a fair opinion. The small changes and some elements being switched around just had to happen. They happen in tons of remakes tbh.
In the end we arrive at the conclusion that these changes while not to everyones liking had to happen. They chose this route and we can only judge if it was the best when the trilogy is completed (people also had the weirdest timeline hopping theories pre-Rebirth and it turned out to be almost the same story as OG).
And so the audience has to either try and accept that or move on. I find it fairly easy to do. And while I wont say that these changes (so far) are 10/10 storytelling. I also disagree that they are bad by default just cause of the change. People jump the gun way to quick on that.
So if the existing characters and story are a 9,5/10 and the gameplay is a 10/10 and the graphics are an 8,5/10, the music another 10/10, then maybe these story changes are a 7/10. All in all that still means the game is a 9/10.
I still get your point btw while I disagree on the conclusion and nuance.

SE could put all future installments in the series on everything from day one, scale back the budgets, go back to "turn based" and even bring Sakaguchi himself back, and I really don't think it would make a difference. I still love the series to this day, and lately I've been having more fun with it than I've had since IX, but the reality is that there are a lot of fans who have made their mind up that the series is done and will never be the same, and unfortunately they care more about being proved right than they do about the future of the series, so they won't even give it a chance.

FF7 is still their main game out of all their offerings (even above DQ). So cutting budget on their biggest title even if that title is underperforming would just further dig their braves. Finally the CBU1 dev team is very efficient by now. They dont go over budget unlike allot of other projects/dev teams. People can correct me if I’m wrong but I’m less worried now than I was a couple months ago when this news hits.
I get the genuine fear though. What we have right now is 2/3 of a legendary remake series. Players and fans are imagining playing this trilogy start to finish one day like OG FF7 and it being of equal quality from part 1 to 2 to 3. That would be super satisfying and precious. Meanwhile the idea they would cut scope or fall short on the last game just because of money issues and lack of vision from suits is heartbreaking. But so far I’ve seen nothing indicating that.

We are living in an age where most people are struggling financially and with that comes lower sales for luxury products like video games. Neither of these games sold poorly, they were both #1 in their opening week and sold over a million copies, but both are also large expensive productions so Square kinda needs them to overperform to turn a profit. Compare that to either Octopath game f.e., both sold less then FFXVI or Rebirth but were bigger successes because they were cheaper and faster to produce. Square needs to rethink their production pipeline. It just doesn’t work anymore to throw money at a title that’ll be in production for years and expect it to do gangbusters, especially when you only release them on a new expensive console that buyers have no urgency to own. Make cheaper games faster and sell them for less, they’ll earn more money in the long run that way.

I enjoyed ff16, but lets be honest, its not at the same level as ff10 or ff7 original. IMO, they need to stop spreading themselves too thin: ff16 had all the makings of an amazing game. However, the sub quests were boring, and for a game that is supposed to appease rpg fans, it not only moved from turn based, which is a change tht old dieharder fans didnt want, but it also reduced other rpg elements from it.
I really want them to solve their quality problems: I would hate it if they learn the wrong lessons and dont try another ff16. Their problem is not exclusivity(although its much better to just get rid of it and release it on pc) their problem is they need better writers. With great stories, their games will shine again.

Agree with the side quests lol. Plus the gameplay got very repetitive real quick. But overall it was very good. Story, dialogue, characters are well crafted. What baffles me is people thinking that 16 is a "single button mash" game when it clearly isn't. People would really believe someone on Twitter playing with the "Accessibility" equipment on.

It is a mixed bag of things, like most people have to work 2 jobs just to pay their bills, we are in a situation governments are sitting on their butts not reforming economic systems and regulating corporate greed, or redistributing wealth to working class to spend on the economy as much as they should, Not everyone owns a PS5, AND FF16/FF7RB, or let alone have time for playing these games, I also hope people take into account that the games are MASTERPIECES, PERIOD. They were well made and structured games, I HATE seeing just because they didn't sell well, that they are now getting a bunch of needless hate from some people who have not even played the games themselves, some of which are from the garbage anti woke communities on comments attacking the game dishonestly, it's so stupid, there are many factors on why a game succeeds in an artistic level and view, and why it should be a separate conversation to it's business aspects in some ways, cause can it do bad because the games are unappealing? Sure, but this is not that conversation, it's about the fact people can barely afford a PS5 AND do not have time to play these games, having these games exclusive to the PS5 was also a big mistake, as it isolates it from some communities who would love to play it, but can not access it because they have either another platform or do not have money to afford to play it, as stated above, or feel they have no time to play it all together.
I hope things improve for Square, I REALLY do not want any cut corners for the final installment for the final game of FF7 remake saga, I want them to go all out, even if they have to postpone it's development down the line so they can take their time producing this behemoth of a game.

thats what happens when you take a game and try so hard to make it into something else. They butchered ff7 in not wanting to go all in. They made the first game a confusing mess, and wanted to amke it stand alone in case they dont go on with the second one. Then they went full on "lets do whatever" on rebirth. Its a sequel but its not, lets tie in the mobile game, lets change the story but lets make it still the same. nothing works, they pushed away the main fans that brought FF to where it is. Then FFXVI would have been so much better as a stand alone game, not a FF. It is not a FF. SE keep pushing the fans that made them a big compagnie. They need to humble themselves

I absolutely love FF XVI's system of almost limitless combos in combat, which kinda is a product of the "only one controllable character" thing. But imagine how much harder Cid's death would've hit if he wasn't just a fun character but a party member you actually rely on. Like, a big part of Aeriths death still being memorable is that tangible sense of loss. That "what the fuck, I need to switch up my party and deal with a change in play style" because let's face it, even though you can mix and match materia, we all used Aerith as a dedicated healer on our first playthrough. Now, even though we lost one of the best Cids ever, at the end of the day he was just a plot device

I'm a huge fan of the original game, but I don't want a pseudo Advent Children sequel about time travelling, fixing the "wrong" original story of the source material and Square's Ethics Department telling me that the designs I love so much are "problematic". I didn't buy the game. Also, since FFXV, the saga doesn't look like a japanese game anymore and with the exception of Kingdom Hearts 4, I've no more interest in Square-Enix's games, and I've been supporting them, buying their games since 1996.

  • @DayFul

My worry with the sales is that it could compromise what PT3 could be. I'm not into the multiverse Zack stuff but everything that's been happening with the main party has been great, Yuffie and Vincent's stories are going to be strong additions to what was already my favourite stretch of the game. I just hope they give Cid a bit more bite he's the only character who they haven't nailed which is a shame as he was my second favourite character after Yuffie.

I am happy going forward they will release on multiple platforms. They need to hurry up with VII Rebirth on PC, I bought it on PS5 and I'd of bought it again 3 months later if it came to PC, even at full price lol. I love that game so much but the longer the wait the less I will buy at full price on PC because the hype is going down each time I have to wait and the many other new releases coming out this year.
Square are both amazing and also so bad in some areas lol.
Totally agree with u on the amount of stuff in Rebirth and yet it's not in another new FF...i.e like 16 which had so little in terms of extras. As much as I love Rebirth they should of put a bit less extras in it and more of that in a new title.

Something that might have cost rebirth sales is the dumb multiple timeline plot that isn't even well put together. Remake was fun and enjoyable until they put that crap front and center. They should have made smarter changes instead of something so drastic and poorly thought out.

I only buy these types of games on PC now. I bought my PS4 to play the entire FF7RM (and FF15). When they split it up and boosted PS5, I refused to buy the next console.
PC Games are for life and they get mods which make them better. I don't want to rebuy the games every new console generation.
Microsoft just bought out Activision/Blizzard. Pretty sure their gaming development isn't going away. Likely X-Box will have a lot of exclusives.
As for Final Fantasy 16. I probably won't buy it until they fix it up, which means I might as well wait for a steam sell. By then either they have it fixed, or it will be fixed by mods. It honestly feels like square is just using PC to double dip. Which is why they delay the release for a year. What they are hoping is the fans will buy it on console then turn around and buy it again on PC a year later because of some "new features". FF15 they straight up lied about their modding support just to boost PC sells.
