I own a 2014 EQUUS Signature and I have no regrets whatsoever. It never ceases to amaze me how many people put stock on a badge. I'm all about value and reliability and could care less what people think about me.
Could I have purchased any of the luxury German or Japanese brands? Absolutely. But after doing some comparison shopping and test driving the competition, it was a no brainer what car I was going to get. If Mercedes, Audi, BMW, and Lexus are such great cars, why don't they back their vehicles with a better warranty? I mean c'mon! I have heard the horror stories from friends and co workers who own of those makes and they issues they have regarding their quality and reliability.
I can't count how many times I am asked "what kind of car is that"? Mainly from BMW 7 drivers lol!
Oh and BTW, Hyundai picks up my car for service from my home or office. I never have to bring the car in to the dealer. It's called" Concierge Service". Do the other luxury nameplates offer that?
Don't get me wrong. I Love the Mercs, Audi's and the like. But I can't justify their prices when I can get a comparable car for about 20 to 30 grand less. And that's a lot of change folks!
And to poster johnwillyn who posted..."Hyundai is for poor people who wants to buy a new car. A luxury expencibe car?? Point less car..."
Pretty arrogant comment don't you think?? Please learn how to spell.

johnwillyn is a moron that lives in his mums basement lol. I had the pleasure of driving an Equus while working in Korea. I was surprised at how good it was. German luxury brands rely on their image and can get away with building a lack lustre product. Hyyndai cannot, they have to produce a product that ticks all boxes, and the Equus certainly did for me. Wish it was available here in Australia.

MRDKastel My cousin Greg has a BMW 3 series - and the rubber molding is already coming off of the window frames. So much for the perceived quality of Euro imports. And Jaguar's reliability record ain't so great.

Everybody not rich. Even if I could get a Mercedes, Lexus, Audi, or BMW that don't mean I'll get one. It's other good luxury or what they call Near Luxury cars that cost less than the over bought luxury cars that's better than those cars like the Equs and the K900 that last longer and that have more for the money. I'll be glad to get a Equs if I could. Looking like the stereotypical rich person don't mean you have the best stuff and Hyundai and cars that's like Hyundai show you that.

@Rudderman, How was your experience with the Equus after 4 years from this comment? I was thinking between Equus or GX460! I would appreciate if you would share your experiences since you had the Equus. It would help make a better decision. I personally tey to avoid certain cars that force me visit mechanic shops frequently for repairs! I'm trying to avoid that as much as possible! Thank you

And he is right, we are considering a pre- owned Equus just for the fact that for around 35 grand we can get into a premium sedan for half the cost and don't have to settle for a new loaded Accord or a small C-Class Benz or small Audi A4.And both generations of Equus are really nice looking opposite the opinion of John and Motorweek. It's easy for most auto journalists to be critical when they have the keys to nearly every car on the market. Every person cannot afford to get into a S-Class or BMW 7 or Lexus LS, even pre-owed, so cars like the Equus gives the rest of us options..

Spot on argument you made. German cars are money pits as the miles climb and that's before even hitting 100,000 miles. German cars, relative to the ones made in the late 20th century, are more hype than actual quality. That's something the Equus epitomizes in terms of working hard to re-define what quality is for the price.......that's called value.

@@kennyj204 In 2015 we saw a 2013 Equus at Carmax for a great price . We went to look at at, because it was shining on the showroom floor. When we got there , we couldn’t find it. The salesperson drove us around on a golf cart looking for it. When we finally found it, it was so dirty and filthy inside and out. Evidence that someone, most probably the sales staff, was driving the hell out of the car. So we asked for a discount because of it , but they would not budge. We couldn’t find another Equus in the Memphis area at that price. So we ended up getting a certified pre owned Acura RLX.
A few years later, my cousin ended up buying a 2015 Equus, and since then till now(2022) , there are so many used Equus’ on the streets, so many people are realizing the great deal that any used Equus is .

You can now get this car for under 20k. I would see a problem paying 70k for it when new but now in the used market its an amazing deal as they predicted years ago. The brand cachet matters no more at this price point and the tradeoff is reliability and relatively affordable parts which is not the case for S Class and 7 series.

Currently the car has 175,000 miles. Cost/mile is $0.03 in maintenance....tires, brakes, oil changes etc.
My 2011 Lincoln Town Cars operate @ $0.02/mile.
I operate 3 EQUUS = Brilliant value for money.
Most recent EQUUS I purchased, was a 2016 Signature model with 3,000 miles for $48,000 = no brainer, find it & buy it.

People are being too harsh to Hyundai with their Equus. Look at Lexus 25 years ago, before then, toyota were known for building econoboxes. Look at Toyota and Lexus now. It'll take time for people to consider Equus as a prestigious car just like the original Lexus LS400 started out.

Hello, I own 2014 Hyundai equus 62k miles and I also own 2008 Lexus LS460L Long wheel base 82k miles. I like them both, they both Lexus and Equus have reclined rear seats. They both have about the same length when park side by side in my garage. I am blessed and grateful to own both great beautiful cars, paid for. The Lexus has higher and better leather quality. They both comfortable cars and have great sound system. Equus does not require premium gas ⛽ while my Lexus does require premium gas. The Reclined REAR SEATS that sold me these cars, great for long road trips every year.

    • @UnapologeticGeek
      @UnapologeticGeek 9 лет назад +4

Well, Cadillacs are twice as fast as this Equus both in a straight line and on the track. As for space, any Minivan beats this Equus. You don't get power reclining rear seats in a Minivan though, so i guess that's what you pay $40,000 difference for ... i guess some people call this "value" ... I tend to drive the car from the front seat though, so for me giving up performance and handling for a power rear seat sunshade and power trunk lid is a dubious proposition. But some people think if their car has a fancy badge that they must be overpaying for it and they like to feel that they have outsmarted everybody and got the best "deal" - this car is for them. It's a car for people who understand relatively little about cars but really like "deals" and "value" and other things like this which cannot be measured on something like a luxury car. the "deal" you're getting with this car is entirely in your head.

I own a Hyundai Genesis with the 4.6 liter V8 engine rated at 375 hp. I have personally taken it from zero to sixty mph in 4.9 seconds. If paying another $35,000 for an S-Class Mercedes can get you from zero to sixty in 4.0 and you really think you need to get there .9 seconds faster, then be my guest, but I think my Genesis is fast enough. As for luxury features, it's got everything I need and everything you'd get from a high-priced German car. I personally think that those who pay German prices for Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche are simply buying snob appeal, nothing more. Add in the fact that German cars are notorious maintenance headaches with extremely expensive repair bills and I am not impressed when I see somebody driving an S-Class or 7-Series. I just see someone who got duped into paying too much for a car.

Most of these are coming in right around $20-27k now. It is probably a very good car as far as build and reliability, but the gas mileage is a bit of a turnoff. That is about what my 1972 BMW Bavaria used to get. I probably will set my sites on a used Sonata which, while not as lavish, it is most likely a better car to drive.

0-60: Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi - 4 seconds. Hyundai - 6 seconds. This car may be a good value, but if you tell me it's as good as the Germans i will laugh. Oh and by the way, Tesla does 0-60 in 3 seconds. So yeah, to say Hyundai has a long way to go is an understatement. But i'm glad there is one more player in the segment - keeps the pressure on the leaders to innovate. I just think Hyundai will need to try a bit harder than this - it can start by adding Turbos and All Wheel Drive - something ALL of the German cars it's after have. This review correctly states that this Equus is basically a copy of Lexus LS from the 1990s ( Naturally Aspirated V8, rear wheel drive ) so it is a copy of a 20 year old car, which itself was a copy of German cars. Yes, Hyundai has a long way to go, a LONG, LONG, LONG way to go. Lexus has been in the game of trying to beat Mercedes for a quarter of a century now and is still trying. My guess is a quarter of a century from now Hyundai will be in the same position as Lexus is today.

Unapologetic Geek People who pay the price of a Mercedes, BMW, Audi, etc are simply going for the snob appeal and status of a brand name. It doesn't matter how good the Hyundai or the Lexus might be, you will never admit that it's as good as your cherished "luxury brands." And this prejudice can even extend to other German automakers. By all accounts the Volkswagen Phaeton is actually a better car than an S-Class Mercedes but with that VW badge on the grill very few people were willing to buy one. I guess they still sell them in Europe but VW pulled the plug on that model in the US after just four years of dismal sales numbers.
