Put a small pit below grade for the top of the well, if it’s done right you’ll be able to drive right over it, like a manhole cover. Ours has been this way for over 40 years.
Dig a hole around the well pipe. Shorten it and lower the well into the ground. Pour cement around it and cover it up with a man-hole cover. Like a city street. Then you can remove cover to access it if necessary
I prefer to build it a house. And respect the work of Grandpa! Here in Miami for no reason they're making rotondas "to make us to slow down a little bit on some streets", if there you can not build something to respect that well, you may loose a piece of a truck and maybe damage the well some way.
@@tractorboy4148 I worked for a well company for 3 years, we drilled every thing from 36" bore hole and 16" casing iragation wells to 12" bore hole 6" cased house/stock wells. We even sunk a 8" 1300' deep for a oil field water supply well. I was usually on the drill crew but i set pumps from time to time. We pulled wells that were down in 8ft deep pits, no problem as long as there weren't snakes when making the initial connection. After that we had special tables, dogs and doors for that exact scenario. Added about 10min to to the pulling process. Also to mention a 400" well even if its 6 or 4 in needs a professional machine to pull it, especially If you don't want to spend a week doing it. Well pit will probably add 100 bucks to the process if a professional company pulls it, not a problem.
My friend farmer went on a''cruisade''once:he asked every farmer in his neighborhood to pick up their rock piles!!!He cleaned up all the piles with his excavator and 2 dump trucks in about a month and made a 1 000 foot long driveway on his farm!!!

Robin Creeden Hello in NW Arkansas. My life probably would make good footage 🤗. But wouldn’t have the time .I grew up on a small farm which loved every bit of .My father has passed on but still have the farm but rented out . I’ve collected all the old machinery in the yard once horse drawn and converted for a Ferguson 20 . Still runs 😁 . Love the outdoors and fixing things and like tidy grounds . Crazy as it sounds I’ve been making jewellery for a living for 39 years now but still love the farming stuff 👍🏻
Hello, also from Ireland!! I’m in west cork, on a 25 acre farm with cattle. Was a dairy farm years ago but is now a beef farm. Hope your yard looks amazing with all the scrap gone, we really need to do the same thing
Here is a thought, make the well a water feature, like a fountain, solar powered with valves off a wall and hydrant for refill for sprayers and emergencies and put a drive circle around it and a planter for flowers.
I was born and raised in Iowa and have since left. Your videos remind me of home and I feel like I’m watching my own family when I’m watching yours. Thanks for the videos. 🙂
Young man, I find you exceptional. You're filled with enthusiasm, will, energy. You're comparable to the Energizer rabbit. Seriously, you're admirable. As my father was a farmer, I followed him everywhere because I loved seeing him do everything he could do with little. I was raised in a 97-year-old 2-storey house and it's crazy all the little treasures accumulated by the previous owners. I look at you and it makes me feel good because it reminds me of my childhood years. Thank you !
COUPLE OF SOLUTIONS FOR YOU!!! 1) I'd dig a pond where the spring is in your yard. Having a nice swimming hole after a long sweaty day is amazing. You have the equipment to dig one out yourself. 2) I'd just cap that well in the middle of the driveway. Dig 4-6 feet down and put a cap on it.
A body of water is a perfect spot for bugs to spawn and congregate, not the best idea in the middle of a farm, you would have to make sure there is fish / frogs, etc. in it, not just dig a hole and fill it with water or bugs will get out of control. Its gonna bring in more birds and other animals also.
@@JoshDragRace0688 Obviously. We had 5 acres and the last acre was all wetlands. We dug a pond and it actually died out the land around the pond. Made it 15 ft deep so it was swimmable and I had bass in there.

Cole having his own family-wonderful wife and cute baby boy. House looks awesome, still working on, but my, how its changed. Awesome to see all the life transformations!
When you get to consider extending the drive around the building, take your flatbed and do a few loops. That way you know better how far to go out and not clip the buildings by going too short. Then maybe set some stakes or send up a drone to map it out.
I'm gonna say a 2 year plan for house, driveway, yard/landscaping, and garage. Possibly 1 more year for moving the bigger stuff and adding the heated shop so he isn't landlocked anymore. The progress he has made in the past year has been huge and he is motivated to make a positive impact on his family farm.
another option on the well is to dig around the top of well piping /cut off exposed piping/form around and build small catch basin/run new discharge pipe to new location--construct catch basin top and you can preserve well asset and solve safety issues and location problems
Hey cole. I plant grass for a living, so I thought I would give some tips for your yard. For seed I would find a nice local seed distributor and buy contractor mix seed blend. It Will give you a high yielding product. Will have 4 types of grass in it and will all blend together to make a vary nice yard. Then I would highly recommend a 19-19-19 fertilizer the best stuff Iv ever used. The nitrogen gives the seed such a boost at the start. It’s expensive but works wonders. And I would cover the seed. Sounds weird but hear me out. You can buy stuff called futerra environment. You lay your seed and fertilizer and then put this over the top. It’s does a lot of stuff. It helps with erosion, like you pointed out in the video with all the rain. It will help hold the soil in place while your grass is growing it’s roots. It keeps the water by the seed. Unlike sod or not covering the seed. You don’t have to water it near as much. The Environet holds the water and helps keeps the seed well nourished. It also acts as a compost. It has sawdust on the outside so as the covering decomposes it adds to the soil for more nutrients. The best part yet is you don’t have to pull it up. The net naturally brakes down from the UV light of the sun. It’s pretty awesome. Grass can be vary sensitive. Grass likes nice soft soil. If you put the environet over the top you won’t even have to tamp in the seed. It’s pretty slick. And if you plan on usin the dirt you have already I would highly recommend renting a power rake for the skid loader. We use that for most our jobs. Saves money on dirt and can help level and fluff up a yard. Not sure if you will see this or not. But this is what I would HIGHLY recommend. It’s not cheap but I promise you will have better yields than just having normal seed just sitting on the surface. And even planting the yard in July will be just fine with this stuff. Will help from the seeds getting cooked from the sun. It’s amazing product. Thanks for the videos. Enjoy the rest of the summer.
I read your instructions for Cole, you are right on, Cole will probably take your recommendation, after all he is a farmer. My grandfather was a farmer, he always had a garden, and a huge front yard. My Mom took after him and could grow anything, I on the other hand did not get the farmer gene, but I love a pretty yard and landscaping.
The rock next to the building is a good idea. The best rock driveway that I've seen had a base of bigger rock then was topped with regular driveway rock. The guy was a heavy equipment contractor.
So a good possibility on the tomato plants is you had those till pipes over them. Good chance on your hot days that with those around them it basically baked them to death
Would love to know more about your grandparents and their life on the farm. Just would love to put faces to their life on the farm and their beautiful home.

No! No! No! Keep the well!!! Iron rich water is great for trees, grass and shrubs. And gardens. You need to think about putting in an unground sprinkler system in now, BEFORE you seed the lawn. Build a little "outhouse" size building over the well. Run an underground sprinkler system off it. No more danger of running over it. Trust an old Grandma on this one.
I myself would also keep it, but see no reason why a manhole like city sewers have couldn't be set and the pipe cut down and accessed via the manhole if need arises. no more obstacle , can be snow plowed, and can still access the well if pump needs servicing.

Ok, so any plant that you put in the ground needs water daily to establish it roots. Preferably in the morning so it's well hydrated for the day. Did you do that? Same rule for seeds. They need to be hydrated to germinate. The tomatoes croaked because you hid them in those clay pots. They need sun and lots of daily morning water. There may not be enough sun over there also. 6 to 8 hours is needed for all the crops you put it. The good news is you have beautiful deep rich black soil. Some of the best in the world. Find another spot close to the house and water source that gets a full 8 hours of sun and try again !
You mentioned that the well saves you $300 a year. However if it is full of minerals it will cause extra wear and tear on your equipment and pipes. I would figure it would cost you more than $300 a year just in valves freezing up and internal parts on your sprayer. I would opt to completely remove it.
@@JakeHasbargen hopefully Trump will fix that with a new Republican governor. All these democratic run cities are losing their minds. Hope you are safe and stay that way.
Cole, do like my dad did years ago when we moved to Ankeny and had not yard. He planted the entire yard in soy beans the first summer. Disked them in during the winter and planted grass seed the next spring. We had the best grass in the neighborhood.
I mentioned this previously so thought I would suggest again. One thing you can do for watering your garden if you have the time. If you set up a rain barrel connected to the troughs from your house, you can put a timed pump on it. Take some PEX/flexible plastic plumbing hose and run it out to your garden. reduce the sizing down to about 1/4" hose and run that along your rows of vegetable. Put pin holes all along the length of the 1/4" and then you can water your plants pretty reliably. (provided your rain barrel stays moderately full) (tip get big rain barrel)
Kitty needs to be named Heinz. Daddy Cornstar is a wonderful hubby. Found a nail, and hopefully got her tire fixed. Cole has plans, but he knows that he must take his time, as it costs money for that stuff. Planning is the best way to go to get 'er done. Have a wonderful weekend!!!
Your well is about the same depth as ours -- but no iron in ours. Lots of minerals though. It will cost around 35k to drill a new one that deep so I would not tear that one out.
For your well water/iron issue, install a salt filter that backwashes at set intervals. That will corect the hard water problem and it will give you safe, useable water.
Meh, overpriced BS made for the suburban soccer mom hobby gardener. Plant in the ground. Don't be so afraid of actually bending over to work the garden ffs.
Lessons learned: If your contractor is blowing you off before he gets selected you best have an iron clad contract with PENALTIES for failing to remain on the contracted timeline (less mandatory inspections from the county).
Grass clippings on top of weed paper or weed cloth around your garden plants keep down weeds and helps keep moisture around the roots. Also maybe some potting mix worked into the soil for easier root spread. Your compost will be a big help eventually too. Love seeing the clean up progress and how large farms operate. Your family is a great team where everyone contributes to the success. Thank you for sharing all of this, it’s been a great learning opportunity for me and my family.
Your garden needed to be amended to start. You need lots of compost, manure, and fertilizer. You should have the soil tested just to be sure it will grow something.
There's no way he's growing tomatoes and peppers in his climate. They need dry heat and direct full sun. The rain they've been getting shows me it's far too wet for the peppers to even produce and their soil is too saturated for them to grow best
DIG A POND COLE!!!! That way you and Nave can have a romantic place to set at the end of the day. If it's a natural spring, you won't have to worry about it getting stagnant .
Walk away from that deck contractor. You may be thinking, "well he came out here and did all those measurements, I'm sure he's serious." If he hasn't gotten back to you by now, he's not. He may eventually get back to you but you obviously are not a priority, and his work schedule will be similar. If he can't even get a bid to you on time, he's not hungry, and you'll be sitting there next year still with no deck.
Add a bulk water tank with auto fill from the on site well and use your pump to transfer to the semi. Build an underground pump head to remove the above ground shaft and vacuum break.
Turn the well into a like a garden feature. Like make a stone circle wall as a nod to the old style wells you had to crank on a bucket to get water. The wall would also increase visibility for any vehicles around it. Could even be a wooden representation of an old well.
Could you possibly get some old hay rolls and unroll them in the bare dirt for the summer? It would keep your topsoil in place, breakdown and fertilize the area and drop seed for the fall. Then just light scatter seed in fall.
We mixed wheat with grass seed on a patch we were seeding late one year. The wheat comes up fast then dies in the fall. Meanwhile the grass is slower to sprout. One thing I didn't like was the wheat plant was really juicey and it collected on the bottom of the mower. I had a fast green lawn though.
If this was the guy who never showed up the first time for the measurements and now for the design, maybe he's too busy or just doesn't want your business.
i live in rural iowa too and usually only one person shows up to bid and you might get him to do the work, maybe. oh and you will pay what they want because no one else comes out. i am surprised they are not building their own deck. it seems to be a normal doityourself type project.
Yeh the deck guy sounds a bit shady. I just got done building a deck at mine. I always wanted to travel to Iowa, is there any good places to shoot? I could knock over a deck and get some hunting done.
Daddy CS - thanks for the recommendation to punch a hole in the oil filter b4 taking it out. That is such a great idea, changing oil for 40 yrs and never heard about that.
Seriously though, I haven't heard of anyone using a check here in Sweden since sometime in the early 90's! 😳😳 Like, get your asses into the 21st century! 😂😂
Check the pH level,of the soil before you seed or plant another vegetable garden. It may be very acidic due to that old pine tree that used to be there. Put lime pellets on the lawn area to correct the problem . I can't wait to see the new wrap around porch :)
Hey Cole and Cornstar family. So very impressed with your ambition and dreams for the house, land, new buildings, yard etc. The drive you have at your age is really admirable. I'd give the porch guy a call and see what's up, other than that I think you have got all things covered. Have a great day!
Hi cornstars. I just wanted to tell you that you might want to rototill and put manure, peat moss and some good dirt. This should help with your garden. Good luck.
So much already done and so much more to do ! I guess this means you've been picked up for another season. 😉 That's great! Cole the Cornstar videos for years to come ! Thanks for today's video ! Do you have any plans to build some nice guest cottages so in case I'm ever able to escape from California I could rent a nice place on your property ? 🙏😏😉
I totally regret/mourn every well in my lifetime that has been capped or lost. Like another comment said, all pipes can be put underground and can be driven over. Would cost $50K to replace that well these days.
Do an Australian federation style where we wrapped the porch all around the house, also federation Australians were obsessed with seeing every view and square houses. Also under the porches were used for Wombat burrows, which is nice.
That other guy will probably never show up again to get the job. And if he does show up I wouldn't hire him because the fact he didn't seem hungry enough for the business.
You should send him an email offering your help. They probably get a lot of comments that they may not see your offer. That's very kind of you. I know when you see someone trying to get there there home in order you want to just give as much help as you're able to to help them move forward in their life.
august it’s not that complicated.. I could build that sucker without a drawing. Any contractor worth their salt could have that drawn up three different ways in a reasonable period and if there is a delay for some reason they should at least be in touch to explain why

How about just for the time being a wooded fence around the water pump painted a bright color, so know one will hit it. Then when your ready just take it apart.
The water line is below the frost line. It would take less than a day to excavate around the casing, put in a concrete pipe and cap it with a manhole cover.

Thought the same about building chamber for well, can hide all the gubbins in there, topped off with heavy duty cover for access

Dig a hole around the well pipe. Shorten it and lower the well into the ground. Pour cement around it and cover it up with a man-hole cover. Like a city street. Then you can remove cover to access it if necessary
putting a well in the ground is a pain to deal with. if the pump will ever need to be pulled then it would be annoying to do so.

Hello from northern, Minnesota, the good part.😂
Jacob Hasbargen Yah. Sure. Dontcha noo.
There is no good part it's all shit
Patrick kelly just the cities
Joan In Florida yes, the twin cities ruins our whole state
@@JakeHasbargen hopefully Trump will fix that with a new Republican governor.
I think of Anna as the "corn dog." She is so cute.
I love it; Corndog
I mentioned this previously so thought I would suggest again. One thing you can do for watering your garden if you have the time. If you set up a rain barrel connected to the troughs from your house, you can put a timed pump on it. Take some PEX/flexible plastic plumbing hose and run it out to your garden. reduce the sizing down to about 1/4" hose and run that along your rows of vegetable. Put pin holes all along the length of the 1/4" and then you can water your plants pretty reliably. (provided your rain barrel stays moderately full) (tip get big rain barrel)
put that well in a vault, you guys can even make your own below grade and be able to drive over it
Kitty needs to be named Heinz. Daddy Cornstar is a wonderful hubby. Found a nail, and hopefully got her tire fixed. Cole has plans, but he knows that he must take his time, as it costs money for that stuff. Planning is the best way to go to get 'er done. Have a wonderful weekend!!!
Love hearing your dreams.
Your well is about the same depth as ours -- but no iron in ours. Lots of minerals though. It will cost around 35k to drill a new one that deep so I would not tear that one out.
i wonder if you forgot about the bags of grass seed that you took out of your house and put in the garage
I think about that whenever he mentions new grass lol.
Not sure how old that was. You would need to do a germination test. I doubt that it is even viable.
For your well water/iron issue, install a salt filter that backwashes at set intervals. That will corect the hard water problem and it will give you safe, useable water.
Cole order one of those planter like Summer is using. Oh and by the way you can get a 10 % discount if you go thru her channel!
I want one too
Meh, overpriced BS made for the suburban soccer mom hobby gardener. Plant in the ground. Don't be so afraid of actually bending over to work the garden ffs.
Really enjoy following house and farm projects in progress. Please keep us updated! 💓
Lessons learned: If your contractor is blowing you off before he gets selected you best have an iron clad contract with PENALTIES for failing to remain on the contracted timeline (less mandatory inspections from the county).
Yes. If you can't even get a quote from the guy, imagine what his work ethic is like. Get a quote from somebody else.
You would think they would have been glad for the work..guess not.
I would definitely look for someone else.
@@marykaren7542 Exactly
LDCs
I have a feeling all the contractors are buried busy..
Too much salinity and too high of ph it looks like.
Its too close to the house and garage and shaded - I would have put it further back where you can see its still in the sun
There's no way he's growing tomatoes and peppers in his climate. They need dry heat and direct full sun. The rain they've been getting shows me it's far too wet for the peppers to even produce and their soil is too saturated for them to grow best
@@errhka, Uh, if he can't grow tomatoes where he lives, something else is seriously wrong and it ain't the climate, SMH.

DIG A POND COLE!!!! That way you and Nave can have a romantic place to set at the end of the day. If it's a natural spring, you won't have to worry about it getting stagnant .
The end of his day is between 12 am and 2 am !
I just want you guys to know that you are awesome
Awesome plans for your house & property Cole! Can’t wait to watch it all unfold right here!! Love your videos so much! ❤️
Best opener ever, I didn't forget to sign the cheque I just decided not to do it 😂😂😂
I like your vision, Cole! You've done so much in such a short time already. It's going to be amazing!
Move the vegetable garden where it can get *FULL* sun !
@@Sheik_Djibouti Any garden in the northern hemisphere needs open southern exposure.
@@JCrook1028 I was worried seeing that the house seemed to be shading the garden they planted.
Add a bulk water tank with auto fill from the on site well and use your pump to transfer to the semi. Build an underground pump head to remove the above ground shaft and vacuum break.
Does the fridge have soda pop for Cooper?
Turn the well into a like a garden feature. Like make a stone circle wall as a nod to the old style wells you had to crank on a bucket to get water. The wall would also increase visibility for any vehicles around it. Could even be a wooden representation of an old well.
Never turn down food from your mother.
Could you possibly get some old hay rolls and unroll them in the bare dirt for the summer? It would keep your topsoil in place, breakdown and fertilize the area and drop seed for the fall. Then just light scatter seed in fall.
Hello from Houston Texas, I dream of living on some property
We mixed wheat with grass seed on a patch we were seeding late one year. The wheat comes up fast then dies in the fall. Meanwhile the grass is slower to sprout. One thing I didn't like was the wheat plant was really juicey and it collected on the bottom of the mower. I had a fast green lawn though.
And..sadly a bushel of wheat doesn't cost that much!
If this was the guy who never showed up the first time for the measurements and now for the design, maybe he's too busy or just doesn't want your business.
I agree David seems not to need the business.
i live in rural iowa too and usually only one person shows up to bid and you might get him to do the work, maybe. oh and you will pay what they want because no one else comes out. i am surprised they are not building their own deck. it seems to be a normal doityourself type project.
Yeh the deck guy sounds a bit shady. I just got done building a deck at mine. I always wanted to travel to Iowa, is there any good places to shoot? I could knock over a deck and get some hunting done.
Hay, If you want something done ask a busy person.
3:05 you should find out if it is a natural spring and if there is you could have a small lake
Your garden needs lots of sun. Where you have it is too shady.
The clay pipe things blocked the sun that was available. New plants sunny area.
Maybe, but too much shade doesn't explain why the plants are dying. The amount of shade there should only maybe cause poor yields.
Soil looks pretty dead there. Need to bring in lots of manure & compost. It needs organic matter. Too shady also. Most veggies need full sun
all good ideas - but every time they show it its always dry, so I recommend more water.
That little garden needs a ton of compost mixed in and a lot of mulch topping the soil after. Then regular watering and you’ll be good to go!

Sounds like daddy cornstarch been watching Roseann because that’s how she used to pay her bills
Ha! That’s exactly what I was thinking lol

Seriously though, I haven't heard of anyone using a check here in Sweden since sometime in the early 90's! 😳😳

@@attesmatte If we were to pay on line, we couldn't buy time ;), and enjoy the game
Check the pH level,of the soil before you seed or plant another vegetable garden. It may be very acidic due to that old pine tree that used to be there. Put lime pellets on the lawn area to correct the problem .
I can't wait to see the new wrap around porch :)
Get Amish workers, who know what they are doing, to build porch. Write a contract.
Goodness knows, there are plenty of Amish in Amana IA.
Yes! No need for a contract with them, their word is a contract. I wish we had Amish around here
Hey Cole and Cornstar family. So very impressed with your ambition and dreams for the house, land, new buildings, yard etc. The drive you have at your age is really admirable. I'd give the porch guy a call and see what's up, other than that I think you have got all things covered. Have a great day!
Never lose your dreams.
Hi cornstars. I just wanted to tell you that you might want to rototill and put manure, peat moss and some good dirt. This should help with your garden. Good luck.
So much already done and so much more to do !
I guess this means you've been picked up for another season. 😉
That's great! Cole the Cornstar videos for years to come !
Thanks for today's video !
Do you have any plans to build some nice guest cottages so in case I'm ever able to escape from California I could rent a nice place on your property ? 🙏😏😉
Dale Gereaux if you do get ready for some clean air😀
I'm wondering if the pine tree needles have made the soil too acidic.
You have an amazing mindset, upgrade or get rid of the old and integrate some new 😊
Your garden needs lime and fertilizer cow manure is the best
bat guano is actually the best you can use but it isnt cheap
You could landscape an area around the well and possibly use it as a median in the drive. You would have curb appeal and still use of the well.
LOL I told ya I would come build you a porch, send me the dimensions and I'll draw ya up something.
@@augustreil That does not justify a lack of communication.
Yes send an email
Hey cole, I’m from Victoria, Australia. I’m a long haul road train driver. You and your brother have super bright futures ahead, your work ethics are inspiring. Keep up the great work. Oh and daddy cornstar is probably the most wholesome person on RUclips.
How about just for the time being a wooded fence around the water pump painted a bright color, so know one will hit it. Then when your ready just take it apart.
The water line is below the frost line. It would take less than a day to excavate around the casing, put in a concrete pipe and cap it with a manhole cover.
Cole try a raised bed for your garden. Build a box 15x15 fill with good soil. You can plant a lot.
Cole spray paint the well yellow so folks can see it
That works well in theory, but they also paint curbs yellow.
