"This one's from a song called 'Colorado Bulldog', and it's obviously THE SCARIEST thing that you'll ever hear... I think the only reason that i can do it is because I'm the best player ever and nothing's difficult for me". That's what he really meant, but the guy's very humble
Diego Pujol He's the best because he spent most of his life learning and practicing the guitar, and apart from most of us, he never gave up. And also he has stretchy fingers (after years of practicing too) xD
Most important: never give up! Paul isn't showing a video like this to show off how he's good and has a incredible technique, but he wants to teach us how to improve and get better! That's what a good teacher does! He wants the best for his students. That's the reason Paul is one of my favorite guitar players, not because of his skill, but because of the amazing person he is!!!
It took me almost three years (two years of frustration/8 months of pure patience)learning and perfecting the speed and tempo of this damn lick And my strat's frets are severely dented. But super happy i am the day the i played it correctly and that's the rewarding part.
"If you're lucky, it'll come together. I'll give it a try, see how it sounds" Then he plays it perfectly. And then he does it again. Apparently Paul's 100% lucky. Unreal, Paul is a God.
I'm so glad Paul is so thorough in his explanations. Before I saw this video, I thought he picked every note. Now, with the hammer-ons and pull-offs and picking explained, I might just be able to play this before I die. lol!
Its so clean. Every note is heard. Ive seen many videos where people showoff their ability on this song (intro), and the comments are all congrats, but if you listen really, its just heavy distortion, lots of reverb to cover the sloppiness. Paul is right up there with virtuosos of the world
Rick D yes agreed. his tone in the video is ‘trebly twangy’ and makes it hard to play clean if our technique isn’t good. PG certainly has very good fundamental guitar technique
its from paul gilbert terrifying guitar trip.. ive got it on my computer,... i just took this lesson out cos i couldnt find any other colorado bulldog lessons on youtube
The key is not to stretch it like Paul. Stretch just to reach the note. I’m 5’8 I can play this lick but a bit cheating, I alternate pick it instead of doing it like Paul.
I agree you have to be positive & aim high. Start slowly, Learn your licks then slowly speed them up until you can do it perfectly at speed. It takes a lot of time but it's definatly worth it. It's all about teaching your hands to comfortably move into position (Muscle Memory) once you have this your half way there. I find it hard to learn new licks but persist & eventually it just happens. Practice Practice practice and determination. People always forget the determination part.
Actually it is, even paul can't play it perfectly every time, if you watch his MI clinic (with the blue shirt), someone ask him to play colorado bulldog's intro, and even paul needs to practice before he can do it on the spot. That's show how difficult that riff.
@TommyChong101 Also, you can't compare guitar and piano, in terms of stretches and reaches. They are two different instruments. On guitar, you either can make the reach, or you can't. Piano, you have a sustain pedal to help you make a JUMP (if you have smaller hands) and the note still sustains. The note dies instantly if you lift your finger off a note on the guitar. Anyone who's been playing for a while knows how to take shortcuts on the guitar (finger close to the edge of the fret etc)
The descending picking pattern is actually up down-up-down, if you slow down the full speed version you can see that paul plays it that way, not down up-down-up as he says!! it's a lot easier to play using this picking pattern!
Leonardo Casadidio if you didn’t mention it I’d surely miss it. At 03:02 he said up down up but right after that he actually picked it down up down like you said. Probably just a script mistake?
i saw paul ,years ago, during ,the lean into it tour 3nights in a row , and he just killed it. he played a riff like this during his solo and it turns into 1 of the toughest song intros ever lol
@TommyChong101 Reach is especially important with a lick like this. You have to play this lick in this same manner to get this particular sound or effect.
Incredible Shawn Lane signed gilbert's Guitar. Shawn is my favorite guitarist of all time. Paul actually got all of his more crazy pentatonic ideas from Shawn. Such a great player Shawn was.
@trevskiw2008 Before Paul was in Mr Big, he used to go to shows where billy sheehan was playing and from there he was amazed how he played tapping and the patters in his bass.. He went home and tried it.. This HE SAID IT himself.
When beardless clean shaven baby-smooth Jesus starts ripping 4th intervals whilst string skipping on a hairy guitar, you know you’re in for some wild shit
Apparently replies don't match up with the comment they are to. That comment was a reply to vanhalenman. Anyone know who has signed Paul's guitar in this video?
Looks to be only picking the two first notes on the higher string of each set, this allows for the pick to reset under the low string in time for the next set of notes. I just play economy picking so I can actually pick every note like a fucking MACHINE! I love Paul and his ways though. One of the best and favorite
@Vitaum010 Practice definitely helps, but some people are naturally gifted. Paul is one of the most naturally gifted players around. You're hands are either big with very long, tapered fingers...or they're not. No amount of practice can make up for a genetic advantage like that. Not to mention, everyone sounds different when they play. It's as identifiable as a human voice. In some cases, more. Practice can only make up for a fraction of that, as well.
@TommyChong101 Point is, we're both saying the same thing. It's just easy to get caught up in wordage. I think we both can agree that being smart and efficient is very important and I'm sure you'll agree that, eventually....you are going to reach the limit of what someone can do, physically...on the guitar. Just like an athlete. Some people are definitely built more for sprinting rather than endurance, for example. Stretch licks...it definitely helps to have huge paws. : ) later. : )
gotta love that fringed neck though, Ive always thought his tone was rather bright, but I guess when youre in a band with billy sheehan, you have to cut trhough all that bass.
This is the same way EVH played the ascending sixes in “Spanish Fly” except Eddie made lots of mistakes in that part on the album version of “Spanish Fly”.
@TommyChong101 Just remember that we're not talking about musicality here.. We're talking about physical ability and sound as it relates to shred and Django wouldn't have been able to do some of the things that Paul does. The stretches and the reaches simply aren't there. That's true for most people. Those people with the huge hands and long tapered fingers definitely have an advantage and certainly a certain sound that you just can't get with limited reaches.
I know what the Laney sounds like because I own one. I know he wasn't using Laney during the time this particular video was filmed, I was referring to the tone of his solo albums prior to his switch to Marshall. I agree his tone is mainly a result of his technique but there is a marked difference between the sound of Get Out of My Yard and SFADR; The Marshall Vintage Moderns he's now using have a more warm, classic sound, whereas I feel his tone when he used Laney had more attack and presence
Well actually this is kinda hard to pull off if one has chubby, short fingers. I'm not saying that it's impossible, but one would probably have to sit and play it or have the guitar very high up while standing.
@TommyChong101 I'll leave you with another few questions to punctuate my point..... "ITS ALL ABOUT HOW YOU THINK!" So, by that rationale.....you're saying that there's no limit to human physicality or endurance?
@trevskiw2008 U need to understand how one musician kisses ass of the other to pay respect and show friendship. Ofcourse if you see paul's skill he can do what shawn does.. Also about stretched licks, HE SAID he has been practicing this for yrs and thats before he saw or met Shawn Lane. Yes I have seen the video where he mentions shawn lane and plays some of his licks (tapping), he said about the fusion yes.I am talking about Paul's skill, this guy can play what he wants to and what he hears.
how did he get wide stretch pentatonic ideas from a bass player? there is a video of Paul in a clinic talking about Shawn and that he is the scariest guitar player of all time. He said the ideas he got from Shawn were "a bunch of pentatonic ideas" Paul Jammed with Shawn a few times and he really helped Paul break into wider interval licks so there is no denying it when Gilbert said it himself. Shawn Lane said Paul could not handle fusion for too long without his brain exploding.
No, no, no. That sound is the second position on the 5-way switch (split bridge plus middle single coil) with the volume knob way down. Very classic PG clean sound. With a high gain amp like a Laney (which he was using by this time), you get a glassy, trebly, twangy sound. Also, Paul's action is not as low as you might think. I got to play one of his guitars last year at a VIP session and the action was on the lower side of medium.
Yes he is a jazz fusion kind of guy :) Pauls style fits me better than Shawns. What I meant was more Shawns shred solos which involved an inhuman speed with stretches that few people can even do, much less in the speed of Shawn. I do believe he was the fastest ever, despite all the unknown youtube guitarists that claim to be faster. You can simply tell by watching his videos, the twitching-like speed of his fingers. You're right though, all of these guitarists are amazing in their own ways :)
your wrong he is a monster on the guitar. but your also right in the fact that practicing all the time like he did/does will get you as good or better.
I always remember Joe Satriani admitting that he was not a musical genius he worked hard at what he has achieved. 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration as the old saying goes.

Yes but he is very humble...
u uj p
Not even Richie Kotzen was able to play it in that same position xD
I thought guitar players are supposed to be "iNsPiReD" by players better than them, not SCARED? So much for not comparing yourself to others
I always wanted to play that and seeing how he does it helps a lot to understand why I can never do it.
Haha spot on 👌
LOL hahahahahahaha...same here, i thought the same
It pretty simple and you had 5 years no excuses
Same 😂 its unreal

@@jonlate4581 Yeah, I still can't play it!
If Paul Gilbert says it's scary, you know it's scary as hell.
And that there is no hope in humanity. Lol

that first 2-5-7, 4-7-9 stretch... i can't even start a damn solo
It’s not impossible. Just let go of the First finger as you progress the lick. It’s just impossible at this speed while staying in time
Paul has big hands. He's like 6'2". Not a solo for dudes with small hands. Trump hates playing this solo.
The key is not to stretch it like Paul. Stretch just to reach the note. I’m 5’8 I can play this lick but a bit cheating, I alternate pick it instead of doing it like Paul.
And use super wizard neck and thumb rest slightly under the midline of the neck.
You could also just start on a lower string and a higher fret for the first note.
Can't wait to learn this!
I came from stevet
That stretch is really hard, Kudos to master Pablo Gilberto
Paul's so sure that no one's gonna try this, that he himself made a tutorial for the riff xD
When Paul Gilbert says it’s scary, maybe we should all give up 🤣but my god this guitar god deserves my attention to learn this lick ... here goes 😩😩
I agree you have to be positive & aim high.

@trevskiw2008 no he did not get that idea from Shawn.. some of it was from Billy sheehan and then he just improved on that..
I am a tiny Asian dude... Thank God for his PGM mikro series, I'm able to stretch a bit. 😂😂
Incredible Shawn Lane signed gilbert's Guitar.
Shawn is my favorite guitarist of all time.

His tone is a lot smoother now yeah, but with the Laney he had a pretty unique sound; a lot more jagged, but you definitely knew who it was.
This guy is pretty good. Who is he?
2:19 is where i cry
He casually started it from 2-5-7 on D string which is somewhat unreallistic for my left hand.
how come it sounds like his pickups are single coil? im sure he doesnt use the middle pickup the whole time
