Dodge Ram - Headlight Switch REPAIR FIX - DON'T BUY A NEW SWITCH!!!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 окт 2024
- In this video I show how to FIX your headlight switch on your Dodge RAM. This should be the same for all 2009+ 1500 2500 3500 models.
Don't waste money on a new switch! It is very easy to take apart and put more tension/pressure on the contacts.

I had the exact same problem with my 2015 2500 Ram; they would go off on their own after a while...but the other night, (after the lights were out) they randomly came on in the middle of the night!! I saw your video, followed it, took me about 15 minutes and THEY WORK GREAT NOW! Thank you so much!! Great job!
I was having an issue that my headlights were on in all positions Except for when it was in the full headlight position and then they turned off.Did the same procedure that your video showed and it worked great. Fixed the problem.. thank you very much
Thanks for the video! Just took my switch apart and while I don't doubt that cleaning & spring tension is a huge help, under magnification the real issue is revealed... the edges of the contact pads have been damaged JUST enough after thousands of rotations that a slightly conductive 'bridge' has been formed between pads that should of course be separate electrical connections. As many have found cleaning is often enough to break those tiny electrical connections but if you have enough magnification, use a dental pick or another tiny probe to scratch between each of those pads where the edge damage has created electrical connections that should not be there. Small gaps, so of course be careful. Whatever the method, the bottom line is to keep each connection separate from its neighbors. Everything working great again!
Just did a quick search of Ram headlights not turning off and found your video. I did exactly what you showed in the video and the lights work perfectly now. It took me less than 10min for the repair. Thanks a bunch!
Same here. I've been having this issue for about a year now, but lights work correctly when it wants to.
So I removed the switch cleaned up the grease and cleared up the "bridge" gap and now switch works as it should. Thanks for the video. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much for the video. I had a similar problem with my '14 Ram. 5 minute fix and works like a charm. You rock bro!
Awesome glad it worked! Let me know what you think of the other RAM videos on the channel too when you get a chance! 🤘😎
I have a 2014 ram as well, and my switch has early stages of failure haha im going to fix this soon lol
TY!!! I have the 2014 Dodge Ram SLT. Same exact problem (right down to the low tire pressure). Followed the video instructions. I was amazed at how much grease was all over the inside of the switch case. 5 minute clean-up with alcohol pads, reapplied a light coat of grease and installed. Works perfect. 10 minutes start to finish. Now I just need to get some air in that tire lol
Awesome John glad it worked out for you! Let me know what you think of the other videos on the channel when you get a chance also! 👍👍👍
like that your videos help me get to know my own dodge better ! keep up the great job !
Thanks for the support! More on the way!
This procedure worked great for me on my 2014 RAM 1500. Personally I think the solution has more to do with the tension than the grease cleanup, but that's just a hunch. Much appreciate the helpful video.
no the tension is what causes the wear and problem, bending the tabs is a bad idea and it will fail again faster... my other comment for details from an engineering tech fwiw
2014 Ram SLT. Same deal. It took me more than one attempt to get it right, but this worked for me. Thanks a bunch, brother!
Ya know I've been a diesel tech for 35 years, even mobile electric certification,I'm watching your video cuz my ram express headlights just started doing this kind of thing, currently working in auto position.anyhow truck is under warranty, however I'm thinking if I can correct this without inconvenience of dealership.
What struck me was as a kid I had slot cars, with contacts to track to go.when they got dirty or the rails in track did things went south quickly,we eventually figured out to use pencil eraser to clean cars and rails good to go,
Great job. I'm having an issue with my switch as well. $82.00 for a replacement. I'll replace it with the new one and look into fixing the defective one later for a spare.
Man thank you for posting this video, I just dod this in less than 10 minutes and now my lights are going off like they are supposed too
if ur lights are flickering when its off its the switch, i did this to my 2014 ram and its all good now , i had taken it to a shop to have it take a look at it , dude told me right away “its a wiring issue with the headlights” was charging me 200 to fix it lmaoo, i even told em, if it couldn’t it be just the switch maybe and he said no lol , thank you for this video
Funny how many 2014's (mine included) have this exact problem. Thanks for the tip...fixed mine
14 here as well.
Just subscribed couple days ago got 2009 ram trying to fix up on budget and ur videos are really helpful thanks bro. (Holding down on remote unlock windows come down cool as shit never knew)
Thanks for the support Brad! More videos on the way brother!
Similar but opposite issue with the headlight switch on my 06 magnum. Auto headlights worked perfectly but fogs stopped working. Would occasionally (only when very cold out) the cluster lights and headlights would go out while driving. Pretty scary when on the highway at night but shutting the engine off and back on always brought the headlights and cluster back. Never the fogs though. I bit the bullet and replaced the switch with the upgraded standard motor products one and it worked perfectly but I still wanted to know when went wrong with the OEM switch. After disassembly and testing I found a number of the smd resistors were either dead shorted or completely open circuit telling me that they were likely under-rated for the wattage they were running. Some even had significantly different resistance than they should have (ie 4.7k measuring at 3k ohms and a 330 ohm reading at almost 50k ohms). Makes sense this would mess up the canbus signals. But for $47 CDN shipped to my door and less than 3 min to swap out it was well worth the cost.
That's always a good feeling when it's a simple fix. Nice work bro!!
I had a similar problem except the fix was a bit more involved. It appeared that some of the conductive material on each of the pads transferred to the gaps between the pads (likely by the fingers that you bent to be even) I had to carefully scrape the conductive material out of the gaps. Once that was done it worked normally again. Symptoms were pretty intermittent but eventually the lights wouldn't turn off and temporarily I had to remove the switch when the truck wasnt in use until I figured it out. Great video ! Hope this helps those who tried cleaning but still had the same problem. I may have also been getting a key in ignition chime as well....I cant quite remember as it was a couple of years ago.
I just commented and came across your comment... you have found the true root cause being the copper smeared into the gaps, scraping them out is key and bending the tabs for more pressure will accelerate the smearing causing the video repair to fail again fairly shortly
Nice problem solving bro! just did what you suggested and my lights are back now. I have after market Morimoto HID and thought they were the issue, nope. It was that damn switch. Your a life saver thanks again.
Thank you for this video, I have a 2018 Express and my switch went haywire last night. Full on would turn my lights off, pushing the fog lights turn my lights off. It was all messed up. I took it apart and cleaned it all out, all the grease and moved the prongs on the contacts. Seems to be ok now.
I also might add that I had my heat in full blast out the vents and I think it melted the grease inside enough that it was making contact with things it shouldn’t have. It was a mess inside but after all cleaned up it’s perfect now
Currently having this issue with my 2015 Ram. Going to try your remedy. Thanks for this video.
Dude just bought a 2019 1500 ram Laramie not a week ago had the same problem thank for your video I fix it works like new
My auto switch doesn’t work, the lights don’t turn on. Do you think it’s the same problem? Just needs to be cleaned
Just wanted to thank you I had to buy another switch but I didn’t need the shop to do it!
Thanks for this. My headlights are NOT working in the full on position but work in Auto position. Do you think the switch needs dissecting like you just showed?
Thanks for another fix! Your videos continue to save me money on my ram.
Worked like a charm!! Thanks pal!!!Very helpful, my lights are working perfectly now!
great fix and thank you for saving me the 100$, Ive also got a wonky door lock and window control switch. Thanks again!!
thanks for making this video man you just saved me a couple hundred dollars was just about to bring it to the dealership
Thats awesome Joseph thats what its all about! 👍👍👍
Thanks man. I'm. Gunna try this my switch does not turn on the Amber side lights anymore. It goes from Auto to headlight to headlight. I'll keep u posted!
Let us know how it goes Randy
I just did this a few minutes ago. Now it works properly
my 2014 ram 1500 express is doing the same but i thought it was because of my upgrade on led lights will try this and see if it helps
What did you use to pull switch out? Looks like a utility knife but not sure.
Could this have anything with my gauge cluster screen to flicker on and off ? It’s like someone is turning the power off and back on but if I mess with the dim it stops… although I expected it to go black when you unplugged but it stayed on so now I’m not totally sure
Worked like a charm. Thanks for the video.
A man this shit really just worked!! 😂 I just told my wife that some guy on RUclips just saved me some money! Good video! My control switch is working again.
Heck yeah 💪
This totally fixed my 2014 Ram 1500 light switch issue Thank You Man !!!!!!!
Thank you so much...would you happen to have anything to fix my side mirror...the one on the left won’t fold when I press the button
am going to try that. Thanks very much. I will let you know what happens.
Wow, this is the problem I’m having now. Will try this later today and see how it goes.
I had this same issue exactly in my 2014 Challenger RT Classic(same switch exactly) and IMO you did 1 thing wrong and missed another.
First when you have it apart have a look at the gaps/spaces between the 4 labelled contacts, what you see is over time the contact(that you bent) runs over the gap and copper is soft so those contacts actually smear a little copper into those gaps and that is primarily what is allowing it to short, the contaminated grease helps but only because the contacts are smeared so close together.
The extra pressure you added by bending the contacts will accelerate this smearing of the 4 contacts and I suspect it will fail again shortly. If you have it apart again have a look at those gaps and just scrape off the smeared copper with a needle or the tip of a sharp knife to redefine the full width of those gaps... be absolutely certain to clean up any chips of copper you remove, grease it and reassemble, but bending the contacts will add pressure making the switch fail even faster especially with the gaps almost smeared closed already. When(not if) it fails again have a look at this... guessing it will fail fairly soon after your fix, no offense just adding the two tidbits you missed in an otherwise decent fix. Engineering Tech fwiw I'm not really guessing about this it is a very clear technical issue. Do not bend the contacts only clean the grease, scrape copper out of the gaps, clean it well, re-grease and reassemble.
I cant wait to get home to see if this is my problem!! My lights wont shut off with the switch anymore. I'll let you know if it works. I Liked and subscribed Thanks
Thank you sir!! I did exactly what you did and everything works fine now!💯👍 I very much appreciate it!
How did you get your backlights to blue? I’ve been trying to find bulb numbers or some tutorials on switching them but I can’t find a thing!
It is sad that for the last 30 years there have been constant issues with the light switches on these trucks...When I bought my 97 Ram 2500 Cummins everyone told me my truck would just fall apart around that great engine it has, Sucks that they were right...
My dad left his 2015 ram sit for the last 5 months cause he can't walk right now and is getting some help, so I I decided today(Saturday), to get a new battery and it started right away, but I have this same problem, but it's only his map/door lights and the dash just lights up ,I have the dimmer light all the way to off for now, so ill try this or get a new switch for him
How long did stay fixed? Mine will come on then go off. I wonder if it's the same problem
The issue I’m having is one tail light isn’t on when running, but it lights up when I hit the brakes or put the truck in park. I’m told it’s the switch, but I feel like if that was the case it would affect both tail lights.
If my lights are not turning on auto and I replaced the sun sensor with no change to issue do you think doing what you suggest might work. Gonna try now. Thank you in advance
Didn't work damn. Lol
Thank You for this it fixed mine on my 2014 Ram
Omg! I love you!🤣🤣 I can not believe it worked! Thank you for saving the day!👏
When you removed the switch did the lights automatically shut off? My switch is out but the lights are still on. So far no luck.
The breaks between contacts on the board build up with conductive material that renders the switch useless. Carefully clean that or the issue will come back. Hard to see with out a good magnifying glass.
Could this be the same prob if light don't turn off in auto?
How id you change your dashboard lights to blue ? I've been wanting to do that but it makes me nervous not knowing what I'm doing
I was thinking it was the actual solar sensor the reason why auto doesn’t work
Has the switch stayed working?I'm back g a similar issue...drls are working intermittently.wonder if this could be a cure.
Yeah check my other video as I did an updated repair to the switch which has been lasting for weeks now with no issues! Let me know if you have any other questions!
fixed my 2014 thanks man!
im having problems with my dome light and map lights not working u think this could fix my problem thx
bro! Thanks, I had the same problem and it works fine now.
Thanks so much bro saved me some cash Fr anyone know when they grease em up like that
Awesome video! fixed my issue thank you!
My 05 1500 ram doesnt have a toggle for fog lights, What should i do?
Thank you, worked for me too! TY
I've done put a light switch on my 97
Very good info. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for your support! Trying out some new LED reverse bulbs right now so hopefully be able to post that video and the results tomorrow!
Boosted2k , nice! Looking forward to it!
You’re a hero!
Man even I could do that! Right on!
Could you do a headlight build?
I probably won't mess with it too much to be honest! I wanna supercharge this thing hopefully!!!
Boosted2k sounds good man, I found some for 50$ gonna give it a shot!
Nice!!! Let me know how it goes or post up a video!
Awesome Video! Thank you! 🙏
the cluster is always turning on all day and nigth, and it's draining my battery, any solutions?
My 2014 2500 just started acting up today on the headlights ...I turn the truck off but lights and light chime stay on
Your the best brO save me a trip too the Dealership
Hell yeah glad to hear it Carlos!
Mine is doing it now. Going to try it.
Hey Denis I have a couple videos on this repair so check both of them out but its still working today!
Ours stays on all the time running battery down ugh
Someone else might have already mentioned but the ignition on the rams with a key fob that you insert has the exact same style contact that also gets gummed up and fail. It can cause starting issues obviously. Pretty easy inexpensive fix. But poor design
How are you liking your new LED lights? Cause I can’t see SHIIIIT with my stock ones
They are better than stock for sure but still not that great. The stock projector housings kinda suck! The bulbs I put in are bright AF cause I had them in my fogs but in those projectors they don't direct the light too well!
Boosted2k interesting. I was wondering if it was because my light housing is black or if it was just the housing design itself..
Thank you!!
You’re a genius!!!
haha thanks buddy!
You are a life saver thank you
I've done put a light switch on my 97 dodge ram truck and a new battery to and they still flash
Very nice!!!
Super men tht was it lot of help god bless🙏🙏
Nice 👍 I’ll remember now if my switch goes
Hopefully you won't have to fix yours too Leonard! 😁
Boosted2k Well my 2014 2500 only has 17K miles so I hope not yet lol 😂
nice job, thank
Was surprised it was this easy to fix but glad I was able to get it done! Hopefully this helps someone before they spend money on a new switch! :D
Currentlt have the same pproblem!
Did you have an issue with your license plate mod? I noticed the error on your dash.
Good eye! Yes they finally threw an error code but they still turn on fine. I only spent 99cents on them so looks like I need to spend a bit more money on ones with a higher load on the circuit lol
I’m having the exact same problem
I love u bro from saudi arabia 🤣🤣
Haha 🤣
👍👍
Did not work for me, tried twice raising the connections just like u did, with no luck, same ol parking lights staying on. Dodge quoted me at 100 dollars..
the copper was smeared too close together, I commented above in detail what is the full problem and pretty sure yours was also repairable.
Like 300dollars in savings at the dealership 👍🏼
Didn’t work for me :/
Yes Dodge is not happy
😂
I can tell exactly what your problem is! You bought a DODGE!!... JK
Dammit I knew it was something! 🤣
Dude you dont have to prove it to us. Get to the fix, damn.
So your lights stay off when you go to “auto”? That’s normal? Cause mine used to turn on when I go to auto not anymore tho
Is it because it’s day time?
Everything else works except when I turn it to “auto” can I turn them on without using auto?
I have exactly the same problem 🥹
check my recent comment for more detail, the video fix is only half the story and when it works it won't last long.
