This is such an excellent video. There are great albums not included but there is no way to name them all when you are only picking 20. You picked great albums that represents so many different genres and musical styles. I don't have them all but I truly have respect for every album you mentioned. Also, this video cost me some money. I didn't know that Fleetwood Mac had Rumours on that wonderful 45rpm format. I stopped your video, ordered the album and then came back and finished your video. This was amazing!
Melinda Murphy thanks Melinda, as per the video the purpose is to help someone to start a baseline collection, but of course music is entirely subjective. Also entire genres are missing let alone great artists!
I enjoyed that, I've listened to nigh on all of them, albeit digitally, and at least it does give food for thought when starting back on the vinyl road again. I'd still have got DSOTM whether you had showcased it or not as it is one of my favourite albums of all time. Thanks for taking time out of your life to do this. Appreciated.
Folk could do a LOT worse than starting their collection with these 20 very well chosen albums. There's no perfect twenty of course and we all have our own ideas on what that would look like. If I stuck with the artists you chose I'd swap out 'Exile On Main Street' for 'Sticky Fingers' and 'Pretzel Logic' for 'Aja' but that's a whole other rabbit hole down which to disappear! Great job.
Still have my original Creation Records (UK pressings) of My Bloody Valentine vinyl. Both the Isn't Anything (1988) & Loveless (1991) albums, which i bought when they first came out. Yes i'm an aging old school Shoegazer. Also i still have my original Slowdive vinyl "self titled" ep (1990) & "Holding Our Breath" ep (1991)
I have watched every video you put up ever since Melinda Murphy mentioned you on her video you have such a vast knowledge of music it is mind blowing I do have 3 of your 20 albums to have to start a collection but there is one album you mention that I would never put in my collection and that was Madonna I think she hurt woman in music as lead singers more than she helped I would replace her with someone like Chaka Khan, or Carly Simon, Roberta Flack, Whitney Houston. I did go buy on disclogs last night from your referral Rival Sons Feral Roots and Hollow Bones I do have Greta Van Fleet and they are really good but Rival Sons does blow them away. I'm just beginning my collection I only have like 40 or 50 records but I want to make sure I'm buying quality and I also want to expand my knowledge so when I do go out and buy records I know what I'm doing I seen in one of your video you refer to a magazine the only word I caught was Vinyl can you tell me the full name thank you and keep up the videos.
LUCILLE CHILDS those are such kind words and I appreciate it. Interesting comments on Madonna. I’d never thought of it like that. Do you think she over sexualised her content and that was harmful? I wouldn’t do yourself a disservice regarding your knowledge, it’s how much you enjoy those 40-50 not the width of the collection and that is a nice number to build a collection from. What genres interest you? The magazine is Long Live Vinyl, it’s a UK magazine but not sure if they distribute internationally.
@@spinningtheblackcircle8554 In part I think she did at least to me she did also I think she is average singer compared to the list I posted. My favorite band is Skid Row but I like all kind of music.
Great list, but can't help but say The Cure brought out their debut album Three Imaginary Boys in early May of 1979 where as Joy Division's debut Unknown Pleasures came out after in June 1979, so there would still most definitely be The Cure without Joy Division but I do agree they had a big influence on their future sound from then on.
Yeah, I thought that was a good noob list, and while I have had Closer for quite a while I think Unknown Pleasures is really the important one for anyone to have and I should pick up a copy. I did have one back in the day, purchased in 1981. The recommendation for My Bloody Valentine was interesting and I have heard them before, but I think that one is worth adding to my collection as well. Cheers.
Great selection, nothing too obscure so I own them all. However it would feel a little strange for me to get some of the 90's albums, like Ten or Loveless on vinyl because I first bought it on CD, those were from the CD era. I mean those records weren't planned for vinyl release originally so getting a copy on vinyl will be amazing of course, and I'm pretty sure re-editions are remastered from the original tapes and not from CD's but still, my "first love" or "my relationship " with those albums were on CD format. All pre-90's records you showed I own them on vinyl of course and the Daft Punk album I got it on CD but you could argue that vinyl is making a comeback so I don't know if the original would be vinyl or CD? what do you think? Is it a double or a single vinyl album? Cause if its a double maybe the original was planned for a CD release.
You make an excellent point Alejandro. Part of my love of vinyl is holding the album cover and inserts whilst I listen, and recordings first issued on CD didn't have the artwork designed for the 12" format. There's no logic, therefore, to me re-buying certain CD albums reissued on vinyl... but I DO!!! I think it's because I like to think some love went in to making that reissue happen; there's no doubt in my mind that CDs commoditised music and downloads have finished the job.
Nice video, it's not easy doing what you've done but I think you've put a good case forward as to why each album features (eg with Random Access Memories). In videos like these I'm kind of looking more towards the arguments than the albums (as there are so many contenders). You know your stuff! Cheers- Dean
Grandma's Handbag thanks Dean. I just tried to think what would I do if I really was starting all over again? I've only just begun to check out your videos - really cool. Your vintage Hi-Fi Fi looks interesting too.
RAM by Daftpunk is one of my favourites as well, especially because of the low noisefloor and fusion of electronic with acoustic. I can recommend you the first pressing of Clean bandit - new eyes, also great fusion of electronic and acoustic, also great mastering and pressing.
Great selections overall. I think the only album I'm in disagreement with is Daft Punk. I think I would have gone for some real Punk, and threw in London Calling. Otherwise I love all your selections and enjoyed your video. Cheers E
I'd also encourage those recommended the top albums to listen to samples or even whole albums on the internet first, so that they have an idea of whether they may like an album or outright dislike it for various reasons (example: Rolling Stones are rock legends, but I can't stand Jagger's voice so never got into the band's music).
I'd view 3 of these as essential (Mitchell, Young and Floyd) Hunky Dory as one worth buying and perhaps another 5 as tolerable, even enjoyable, to hear on the radio were they to appear. How people listen to Petty or Dylan 'sing' is a mystery to me.
@@spinningtheblackcircle8554 There might be, a feisty debate as to do cross cultural factors prevent agreement or consensus. As to essential probably about 5-10 classical pieces, 5 or so Jazz Lp's, 5 Pop/Rock and 5 from so called 'world music' as a rough guess. A collection lacking the Rite of Spring, Einstein on the Beach, Koln, Comme a la radio, Ambient 4, Rock Bottom........ might be one I do not pay much attention to.

I don’t really like the early Beatles albums, for me it starts at Rubber Soul and onward Personally I could never pick twenty, l just like too many records
Not impressed every record you picked is straight from the top ten. Didn't you ever look into the general section. No psych, prog, reggae metal country rock or anything truly original. Everyone had record company finances behind them. Could do better 4/10
@@spinningtheblackcircle8554 I enjoy looking at all the videos from the vinyl community. Encouraging you to do one on your favourites not from the mainstream. Keep on trucking.
Tuten Vanman purpose here was to engage people just starting a collection. So example I love Trout Mask Replica but is that really a place to start? Thanks for the comments.

Agree
Everyone’s taste is different
great albums
I have Essential Classic Rock Collection that includes Bob Seger , Rolling Stones etc
and many more videos

Pretty Green Vinyl Guy thanks. Punk is a massive omission here. Ramones could have featured too. Tricky to only select 20 for a basic collection.
Great video. Are you from the North East?
Jack Moyes I am yes. And thanks.
I like your list, but T. Rex - Electric Warrior should be on it.
Killer picks!
Like that you chose Ten instead. Black is a great cut from that
Can't believe I forgot to talk about Black actually!
I'd add london calling and legend Bob Marley. random access memories is prob the best sounding modern vinyl release.
I get the slight feeling, that you like the 70s.
Brothers in arms is a digital recording for cd replay . would not be in my essential vinyl but maybe in my cd list .
Partner she has both cds and vinyls

Probably not the only error but After The Gold Rush is from 1970 not 1972!
I didn't even know the Rolling Stones had released 500 albums. They've been around long enough I suppose.

Moving pictures by Rush.
Steve Chesney yep and I love that album. I’ll prep a Rush upload at some stage.
try santana 3
My bloody valentine are Irish
blackcountrysoul yep my mistake
