  • Every Pokémon has a type or 2. Most of the time they make perfect sense. Other times, they make us scratch our head. Let's take a look at some Pokémon with types that make close to no sense.

Gyarados have NO excuse to be Water/Flying and should be instead Water/Dragon EASILY.
Granted.... back in gen 1... that would made Gyarados with NO WEAKNESSES given the only dragon move back then was fixed damaging move called "Dragon Rage".
Back since certain typing was changed in both moves and pokemon e.g.: Bite = Normal (changed into Dark) and Magnemite being just Electric (got Steel typing to it)
There was NO EXCUSE for them to keep Gyarados' flying typing given they expanded the dragon movepool.
Hell! No even mega corrects this and instead gives it Dark typing....

Lugia is not water type because back then a psychic type was known as a "strong" type, because you had pokemon like Alakazam, Mewtwo, Mew, and more. Palkia is part Water because it represents the liquid mater while dialga represents solids with the steel type and girantina represents gas with the ghost type. Hope this helped!

From Bulbapedia: Gyarados's Flying type may be a reference to koinobori, a carp-shaped windsock traditionally flown to celebrate Children's Day in Japan, formerly called Tango no Sekku (端午の節句). It could also be inspired by the South African cryptid Inkanyamba, a giant, winged eel that causes storms when angry, a trait Gyarados is famous for.
In episode 53, The Purr-fect Hero, we see a flagpole with several wind cones modeled after a Gyarados, Goldeen, and Magikarp. Just like the koinobori, in real life.

Not trying to be negative, and I definitely enjoyed the video! But...
Gyarados - Based on a Chinese dragon which don't have wings or always breathe fire.
Gastly line - Pokédex entry even states Gastly is a ball of toxic fumes.
Sudowoodo - Looking like something for your own protection doesn't make you share its physical qualities.
Lugia - Telepathy. Since there can't be 3 types, they had to chose from flying, water and psychic.
Palkia - The legendary representing Pearl. Pearls are formed underwater in clams. Water is 100% logical.

But dragon typing makes more sense for Gyarados when you realize, it doesn't learn flying moves.

Well... Palkia's Typing makes more sense than it might seem, in my opinion. Let's think about the trio. All 3 pokemon are Dragon Types, and of course they are called "Dragon Trio" as well. But their secondary typing does actually make sense.
Giratina is the lord of the Distortion World, and it has a Ghost Type: this makes sense, because it's capabe of traveling within the dimensions, change its form, gaining ghost wings and stuff.
Dialga is the lord of Time, and it can travel over time. A Steel Type makes sense: the steel is a very durable alloy that can resist for years with no sign of deteriorations, so Dialga's steel body is necessary for him in order to stay unharmed after all those time travels.
Now let's try to apply this concept to Palkia: Palkia is the lord of space, it can teleport and manipulate the space itself to his liking. Now: between all pokemon typings, which fits Palkia the best? Which material can assume any form without being destroyed, thanks to its nature? Water. Its Water Type helps Palkia to survive and stay completely unharmed when manipulating space, as steel does for Dialga when manipulating time.
Also, since the trio represents the whole universe, it is possible that developers thought about let 'em represent the 3 stages of matter as well, with "Steel" representing "Solid", "Water" prepresenting "Liquid", and "Ghost" representing "Air"
All this lucubration does actually have a certain logic, or not? Let me know!

Lugia is Psychic since it used to live in the Scorched tower, also being a water type would give an advantage over Ho-Oh, Lugia has telepatic powers and the hability to speak to humans, an hability shared by almost every psychic type. So Lugia is a representation of how humans cans missinterpret some legends since humans in the pokemon world assumed Lugia was a water type.
Lucario is steel because mineral ores and crystals are used in spiritual energy rituals, psychic represents the mind so it wouldn't fit in the concept of aura, since Lucario uses spiritual powers, not mind powers, and if a counterargument is that there's a Lucario who can speak to humans using telepaty, movies are not canon.
Palkia is water because it's a methaphor to the space, since time is not malleable represented by the sturdy nature of steel of Palkia, and space is vast and uncontrolable, just like the sea. Also the legendary trio it comes from also represents the 3 states of matter, Dialga being solid, Palkia liquid and Giratina is gaseous.

But that makes no sense when we have Kyogre with a type advantage over Groudon, Dialga having a type advantage over Palkia (Steel resists Dragon and Dragon resists Water), and Xerneas having a type advantage over Yveltal, and Primal Kyogre having a even bigger type advantage over Primal Groudon, since it became a dual Ground/Fire type (just overwrite the Extremely Harsh Sunlight with another weather condition. Heavy Rain stops Fire-type moves from working, making Primal Groudon's new Fire type nothing but a disadvantage).

Actually there’s a very good reason why Palkia’s a water type. Allow me to explain. So, Giratina, Palkia, and Dialga’s primary types all represent the 3 stages of matter, being gas, liquid, and solid respectively.
Edit: I also have a possible explanation as to why Lucario is part steel type. Now, I’m gonna start this out by saying Lucario has a strong resemblance to Wolverine, both of which have metal claws on their hands, and Lucario’s shiny bares a strong resemblance to Wolverines yellow and blue spandex. Therefore, I believe Lucario, like Wolverine, has metal bones. This could also explain it being able to learn Bone Rush, because it’s metal spikes would actually be it’s bones. Now I know that the canon explanation is that it creates aura bow staffs that looks like bones, but I like my little theory so let me be.

    • @bugsybro3011
      @bugsybro3011 6 лет назад +22

Actually Gyrados is a flying type because its whole evolution process (Why it goes from a karp to a dragon) is based on a chinese legend in which T that if a lowly carp could leap over a particular waterfall, referred to as the Dragon Gate, it would be transformed into a dragon, and that when one succeeded, the summer rains would start to fall. There are numerous waterfalls in China which are claimed to be the Dragon Gate, but the most notable is on the Yellow River, near Henan.
Therefore, the flying type is symbolic of its evolution. Also Chinese dragons are less 'dragon-like' compared to their European counterparts, so the flying type does make sense to an extent.

Ursaring is pure Normal when it would make sense as Normal Dark cause it can be ferocious in battle as seen in the anime.

  • @The9gods

I agree that Gyarados being a flying type is strange, but there is a reason. There is an ancient Chinese myth about carps that become dragons. It goes if a carp can swim up the Hunan waterfall and leap through the Dragon's Gate located at the top, then it will become a powerful dragon. Chinese dragons are long and serpentine AND can fly. This is why Magicarp sucks so much, it is JUST a fish. But by "climbing the waterfall" (getting to level 20) then it becomes a powerful dragon. This is why Gyarados has the flying type and why it can learn dragon moves.
Also if you play pokemon snap, this is why you have to get the magicarp to the waterfall and why it evolves when it gets up there.

Plus, aside from Bounce, Gyarados can't learn any Flying type Moves!

I think Gyarados is flying type because it's based on the story of how a fish climbed a mountain (just like Magikarp) in order to be able to fly

The real reason Gyarados is a Water Flying type was because in Generation 1, Dragon Rage was the only Dragon-type move that existed. And since Gyarados would have been water Dragon, it effectively had no weakness outside of using Dragon Rage to do 40 HP of damage. This was before Generation 2 added steel types, so nothing could have resisted this thing either. In a literal sense, it was broken, and Game Freak just never changed it to be a dragon

No. The real reason Gyarados is not a dragon type is that the koi loses its dragon status if it abuses its power. It's directly in line with the lore.

Fairy Type didn't exist in gen 4. And they are NOT gonna change the typing of legendary pokemon

    • @LizardLogan

And fairy type didn’t exist in gen 1 although jigglypuff is fairy type

    • @akdip1924

Jigglypuff is not a fairy type. Types of legendary pokemon's typing wont ever be changed.
Edit: Heck I came back and realized I said Jigglypuff is not a fairy type. Jigglypuff's type was changed to fairy type, but only because it is a regular pokemon, not a legendary.

LizardLogan this is true but because of the 'status' legendaries have and their lack of fairy moves to make use of for stab they wouldn't ever change it

I am Chinese. I get why ppl say it makes sense for Gyrados to fly but at the same time, we've never seen Gyrados fly like ever in anime or any other media so Aura Guardian's argument makes more sense

The first time I saw a sudowoodo was in gold and the reason I caught it was because I thought I needed a grass type. When it got hit with a super effective water move right after that messed up my entire Pokémon type chart until I realized

  • @oawblissed9097

the reason that Gyarados is a water flying type is because it is based off the Chinese myth about koi fish transforming into dragons which is why also Magikarp becomes Gyarados.

+Oaw blissed Then shouldn't it be a dragon then?

    • @SturdyFuture
      @SturdyFuture 8 лет назад

+grapesvine it's not a dragon because in red/blue a dragon and water type would have close to no weaknesses (the only dragon thpe move back then was dragon rage, too)

+Ephi Why isn't Mega Gyarados a Dragon type? I doubt there would be any balancing issues.

    • @SturdyFuture
      @SturdyFuture 8 лет назад

it's mega design doesnt exactly scream "dragon" and i dont exactly know why gamefreak decided to go with water/dark instead of water/dragon since they would both be weak to fairy types anyways

+TheAuraGuardian And Gyarados is based after an eastern dragon and it makes sense, since eastern dragons can actually fly without wings. And the reason y Lugia might be part-psychic type it's because of the telepathy that it possess.

+TheAuraGuardian the ghastly line is poison because as refrenced in bulbpedia "Gastly has no true form, due to its body being 95% poisonous gas" (may be after gen 1 so let me give a gen 1 example) "Almost invisible, this gaseous Pokémon cloaks the target and puts it to sleep without notice." that is the gen 1 pokedex entry. Sounds like poison doesn't it?

Jamison Hingle not the reason but good way to remember it. It’s actually because Palkia, Dialga and Giratina represent the 3 states of matter. Palkia being liquid Dialga being solid and Giratina being gas
