It's insane how I've been trying to mix my vocals to sound good for so long and Jaycen drops the most basic vocal chain and it made such a huge difference.
( EQ hipass 50hz - RVOX - EQ low shelf 300hz - Multiband Comp - Air EQ --- Parallel Comp)
Parallel compress the vocal and then automate it so sometimes it sits in your face and sometimes it doesn't?? Why have I never thought of that! This video is GOLD!
No joke! Loved that tip!
Dexter Bartis Genius right? so many gems in this💯
puppiesinspace Definitely not true ten years or so back and before that, before daw’s were so powerful.
As far as every thing coming down to connections and soft skills ... that’s literally every single area in life, no exceptions. Talent is pretty common. Unless you have that next level 1% talent, it won’t matter if you can’t network, communicate, and find a way to navigate your way in. Having the soft skills to go with talent is rare. The former is probably more important than the latter.
Furthermore, I could give you a long list of bands and artists throughout history that had a certain sound during a period working with a famous engineer/producer, and then sounding like shit when they stopped working with that engineer. Back in the day, it was very noticeable the difference between engineers and there was incredible variability. Nowadays, I would say everything is closer to sounding the same with digital technology, but there is a few percentage point difference that separates the pro-level from the amateur, and it’s apparent to trained ears that set the industry standards. What guys like Jaycen, Mike Dean, Tumay (if we are talking modern hip hop) do is give songs those last percentage points of separation, and they continue to set the standard for how loud a track can be commercially. If you caught that tip from Jaycen in here ... there is definitely some artistry and expertise that go along with their connections and social skills.
@puppiesinspace whaat?
dude this guy is amazing i watched almost every video of pensados place and he is the only one ONLY ONE!!! That shares some real and not philosophical Knowledge thanks for this
Sorry, but philosophical knowledge is the essence of understanding a concept or technique
i agree but not in the the audio word where a principal could be the same but all of the possibilities have different character
IKR dude dope
"Can I make a suggestion to say answers that would help the majority of the inside-the-box listeners" what a stand-up guy, truly the best guest on Pensados Place ever!
Engineers who learn the art become better engineers. Artists who learn the science become better artists.
Beautifully said
@brenttauromusic: That's a #SnappleTopFact King
Can you guys please have Jaycen back on again?? My favorite engineer.
Sick Beats Productions I’m doing a research essay on him right now!
@@ItsMeStyles nice 💪💪
I second this
34:18 talking about the Weeknd's vocal chain on reminder
*Holy arms Jaycen!* Is this guy doin' curls with his NS10s all day??
Lmao 😂
I'm honestly shocked how few subscribers you guys actually have. Makes me feel like I'm really getting an edge by watching this channel haha.
HANDS DOWN the BEST Pensado's Place episode ever! Love this!
check out the previous interview he did on here, its even better
Seen it. Awesome too!
Best guest ever! Third time on the show, always sharing so much insight, always killing the game, was blown away to find out he did Despacito etc. Jaycen if you're reading this thank you so much. What a wonderful episode!
That is so insane, Jaycen went on to mix one of the most famous songs of this decade.
This is blowing my mind.
Dave must be so proud.
Stay blessed and healthy people, for all these major gemz you have been dropping on the show!
Ти да видиш хахаха
I honestly think this is testament to how much of a genius Dave is that he mentored someone like Jaycen and how much of a beast at mixing he really. I think if I had watched this video at the beginning of my Audio Engineering career in 2013 I think I would have progressed a lot faster, particularly what Jaycen says about the speed of technology and listening to the 'kids'.
I spent years trying to follow the lessons and technical ideologies taught to me at University (which I am still thankful for learning) but the fact was my mixes and not even CLOSE to the right pulse. Watching Pensado's Place for free is honestly such a blessing, thank you guys for sharing all this knowlege with :D
Great episode. Jaycen is my all-time favorite guest. Love all his interviews.
No doubt
Finally!!! Jaycen has been killing it
one of the best episodes so far - he shares some amazing knowledge and insights!
This might be the best Pensados place episode so far. Thanks guys!
I started rapping just over a year ago and started making beats about 8 months ago. I came here because of 808 and got so much more. Thank you for this guys. I sincerely appreciate it. Within 12 months one of my songs "THIS IS MY LIFE" will be number one.
Jaycen's interviews are by far the best.
Great show! Good to see Jaycen again!!
CONGRATULATION ON YOUR AWARD. THANK YOU FOR BRINGING US GREAT CONTENT CONSISTENTLY.
Great episode! One of my favorite mixers!
This is one of favorites episodes, great job guys!!!
I've just realized how much I don't know about mixing.
Same here - I feel you on that one lmao😂
This has to be the best PP episode. It's, for sure, my favorite.

Shyt wild
Wow haven't watched Pensados place in so long, and my favorite engineer pops up on the show. Trim the front part of the 808 and let the kick come through first. Never thought of it. I know what I'm doing now.
same here!!
And Distortion :)
Right?! Killer tip!
Whts the time place for this tip.
I'm starting at the Blackbird Academy on October 2nd and I can't wait! Hopefully Dave will be a guest speaker! Idk what I would do! Awesome episode!!
Great interview! Lots of gems.
Shout out to the kings, thanks for another amazing episode
Joshua's appearances are always the most helpful.
Loved this episode! Learned so much from it :D
so many PRACTICAL gems!!!!
there's one thing that jaycen still has to learn from dave.
humbleness.
God bless you dave, jay. i hope one day i can meet you all, be your friend, work together, making music and make you guys proud. thanks for the inspiration.
This video is immortalised to me now
so much value. Thank sir Jaycen
S-Gear is terrific! I actually used it live with a usb midi controller for about a year on standard cover gigs. Great plugin.
Excellent show! Informative and good topics
They definitely have an Anakin and Obiwan vibe. It’s awesome one of the best today is a pupil of Pensado.
Jaycen is amazing!!!
I wish there was a channel like this for underground electronic artists/producers
Weekend Reminder Vocal Chain:Fabfilter ProQ2 - Highpass RVox - Compression {More eq} (Specifies a Shelf/Wave curve) ML 4000 McDSP ( 4 Band Multiband Compression) Air EQ (To add a little bit of Top End)Send to parallel trackCLA 2A (Blue Version, to catch peaks etc, Blend to Taste)Hope this helps :)
cla 2a blue version? cl76 no?
can you elaborate more if you know.. about the shelf wave curve he used ?
That's why that Unforgettable snare is the snare of the year :D
Love this show! Great episode :)
Only the episodes with Jaycen Joshua are the best shows! 3 times now...
Great episode!! When is Alex tumay coming? My life will be complete after that episode lol

Would love to have a mentor like any of you guys , so fucking awesome
learning a lot, thanks for this.
Another great Pensado's Place - would be great to have a discography / recommended listening for each guest.
this is smart
Congrats on the silver button award !!!
here we go!
Is there anyway we can get that Blitzberg folder? He’s straight dropping 💎 amazing stuff. Top episode till this day.
Such an informative video.
does anyone have more info on the harmonic mixing he's talking about? really enjoyed this episode
So would using the ADSR controls to shorten the sustain/release on the 808 be the same as using the trim tool or would that be a different effect? 🤔 32:07
Great episode
wow such a good time learning
Shout out to Jaycen! Sharing them KEYS. =)
I'm sorry if this question has been posted before, but I would just like to add that it would be GREAT if you could add a segment where you listen to the rough and then the finalised version of a song and just go through the key changes you've made to it. By song I mean the song in it's entirety. No need to even solo out instruments and talk about individual effects, but to just discuss how particular effects glued the mix together. Thanks!
Excellent!
Wow that was a good show
Soooo...can iget that Blitzberg folder? 🤔😉
Pm me
@@natewilliams2426 Yo please let me know if you have any leads! Would be a dream come true !
@@natewilliams2426 ????
can i get it too??
I would love a Pensado's Place with Boaz
At 37:00, can someone explain scoop shelving like a wave not a bell? Thanks.
This episode is just fucking great.
One of my favorites, thanks !
What’s up with the trim tool thing he said. He’s only trimming the high frequencies of the 808?
How you guys get perfect content loudness?
the best mix and master engnrng skills are related to discovery by the ear..and not copy or mimic other persons chain of settings , its all about ....knowing the virtual room in your head and the setup of the elements in that virtual room...ofcorse you got to know how the trumpet or piano reacts in different spaces and ambiances , a burning candle cant give a warmth feeling on a sunny day in your livingroom, unless you make the room dark , and let the temperature drop to a cold environment,, this is how you can mimic a warm an romantic moment in your room in daylight en in the middle of the summer...this is what you do exactly in your image of your mix . 1 tip....never mix around a kick.....instead mix around the vocal!!!
mikey mokey SHUT UP
waiting for the itl on pillows cant sleep till i see it
Hey guys I just have a question. Why the name “pensados place” ? What does it mean?
one of my favorite parts is 25:00-25:45
you get the scuffham with the Slate digital bundle
tomkillsjerry what is that with slate plugin? I have slate
This is the second time Ive heard a mixer mention Izotope Ozone 4.
Jaycen is one of the GOATS 🐐🐐🐐
When asked about Echoes at 49:36 Jaycen says "flip the phase so they`re outside the speaker". I know that there is a setting in Waves H-Delay to switch the Left or Right Phase, but that logically phases out in mono. Is he talking about that or switching the 'whole Phase' if that makes any sense? So switching the whole signal but that wouldn't change anything is it? Would be very happy if someone could explain this! 😊
Just flip one side. Left or Right. See the scope, the wave is going to be horizontally instead of vertical.
“Outside the speakers” is “out of phase” signal. Is an stereo effect, not to be heard in mono.
What plugin is he talking about isotope 4, I have the 8 version now, Anyone?
izotope 4, hard to get it now...he is still using izotope 4 on master bus
I wonder whether he means the Waves RVox or the Renaissance compressor? In his deconstruction of Justin Bieber's 'Baby' for Sound On Sound magazine in 2010, he used the Renaissance. Other producers seem to confuse the two.
@@garogarogaro Nope. RVox has an exciter to make the vocal feel like it's in your face. And a gate of course.
And Rcompressor is just a great all-around compressor, especially for vocals. There's the "Warm" sound mode that grabs on vocals really nicely.
ITS LITT
so so gooood
Of Jaycen's 808/Kick trick for 2db of headroom, how much of the 808 are you trimming back?
Need to know this.
could anybody help with what he is saying at 49:44 i dont understand the word or the meaning.
"multed"?
he say it earlier in the in the episode too...
please share with us the knowledge if you know what it means
thank you
actually he is saying multi, multiband compression .. i guess
He's talking about splitting a signal into multibands and apply a crossover. Eg: 808 split into low, mid and high frequencies. This gives more control over what you want to process
Am right with the vocal chain!? FabFilter Pro Q2 (roll of bottom end 50Hz!?) -> RVOX -> Hi-Shelf (with a high Q to reduce frequencies below at around 400-500Hz) -> McDSP 404 Mulitband Compressor!?! (which is it exactly??) -> Maag AirEQ and then parallel it with blueface CLA 76.....was this correct!?
McDSP MC2000, inside is the four-band multi-band compressor with the name MC404. Not the Maag, it's the Eiosis AirEQ.
@@MeinePrivatVideos do you know what gear he is talking about at the end, 10 am analag gear?????
INVINCIBLE “10M” is a clock from antelope audio.
Legend
What do you guys think about his shelving technique (instead of using bells) he's speaking of regarding removing proximity effect and low mid build up on vocals. Do you think he just put a negative low shelf from, lets say, 300-400hz ?
Seems like that is what he meant yes. I don't really know what's the big deal about this because it seems like a standard low cut from 300hz or so.
You mean low shelf ? He says he's using shelving instead of bells. For cuts he says he cuts @50-60hz
Jan Magdevski lost me on this one
That trim tool knowledge, what I will say though is that I'd watch out for phase issues when you do trim it though. Otherwise, that is a huge major key. Thanks Jaycen for everything!
wait, isn't trim just gain? how does automating gain cause phase issues?
@@dayman9432 I personally meant that when you trim you could be creating a new starting point of the waveform and that might not line up. It definitely did save me -2 db of headroom like he said
How do you find someone to work for when you wanna learn?
