  • Replacing the coupler on a trailer tongue.
    Update On the bottom plate that goes between the nut and the spring on the bottom. Make sure when installing the plate that the long portion of the plate goes from side to side instead of front to back.

    Thank you!!! I’ve watched several videos and yours is the first to explain that the hook needs to go over the bar on the underside of the hitch.

    Good info/video - I’ve had a trailer that’s been sitting outside for over a year that needs this - didn’t know a repair kit existed. Thanks much.

    i had a 2inch coupler with a bad latch. all i could find locally was a 1&7/8". works perfect on a 2" or a 1&7/8. ball hitch now

  • @davidf9630

    Just a crazy question about your installation. Would it be easier to thread the nut if you took the tension off the lever ( open it)?

  • @parnellmahoney7831
    @parnellmahoney7831 2 года назад +1

    I had to remove the rectangular washer altogether in order to have enough threading showing on the bolt (1 - 1&1/2 threads) to satisfy the safety warning. Think that's okay? I'll be checking it periodically to see if it needs tightening per the instructions and saving the washer in case there's room for it down the road after usage. Also my ball clamp sticks even when I unlock the coupler lock - I have to jiggle it extensively to get it to disengage. Not sure why.

    According to the picture on the package that small steel plate should be installed before that short spring not after it. Plate then short spring then nut. Is that correct?

    • @hoffmanhandymanservice8292
      @hoffmanhandymanservice8292  3 года назад

      You are right about the picture, however it doesn't make sense to put it together that way. This video is over 2 years old and I haven't changed a single thing from how I put it together in the video and I haven't had a single problem with it. I also am using the trailer almost every day when I am not working on the ambulance (so 4 - 5 days a week) take it up and down some pretty nasty gravel roads and still no issues with it.
      The nut acts as a retention nut on the plate, which pushes down on the spring this way and keeps pressure on the hook on the inside.

    • @hellspawn8572
      @hellspawn8572 3 года назад

      Hoffman Handyman Service I noticed that too. Even on the piece that broke off it has the flat piece first then the spring.

  • @whatRU5
    @whatRU5 6 месяцев назад

    Confused. That package shows the plate fitting on before the last spring & nut. But you put the plate on after the spring. Why?

    Hey I’m not sure anyone else noticed this or not but your towing ball is loose. The nut that holds it on you can see moving back and forth in your video. Not good.
    i think my dad commented this because this was not me XD

    so are the kits pretty much universal? they fit any tongue?

    • @hoffmanhandymanservice8292
      @hoffmanhandymanservice8292  4 года назад +2

      I would honestly say so. Your best bet is to look at the shape of the hole on your trailer tongue and compare it to the shape of the bottom on the coupler.

      Try releasing some of the tension on the nut on the bottom. It doesn't have to be torqued all the way down. Just tight enough to where there is no play between the ball and the hitch.

      @@Cambigdongbjj I really don't know. There really isn't a lot of parts to it for it to mess up like that. Maybe the handle/lever is defective? Only other thing I could think of is it may not be the same size ball and/or coupler.
