- Born in France, Eugénie has travelled the globe extensively, studying and working in many countries such as New Zealand and Thailand. After attaining her masters in political science and law, she worked in Bangkok, Thailand for the UN and the Thai Parliament over the course of 8 years. This. Throughout most of the talk I thought she was ripping on conspiracy theories-Santa being a quasi conspiracy. Blue menstrual blood. The use of “deep” to describe conspiracies and the centralization of conspiracies as the origin of establishing a lasting coup. Every example she gives is exactly what conspiracies often are-blatant falsehoods.
She seems to be talking about the scattered approach of conspiracy labels possible shrouding an actual truth. However, she lists napoleon being wary of a conspiracy and establishing a 15 year coup. Then proceeds to end it on the freedom of expression to *have* conspiracies? She proceeds to use a slippery slope of if people are labeled conspiracy theorists, they may be criminalized?
All around pretty bad logic, or perhaps it’s a communicative barrier

I think Eugénie Mérieau mistakes the concept of 'conspiracy theorist' for the concept of 'skeptic'. Skeptics are rational and admit the possibilty of being wrong if proven, conspiracy theorists are completely irrational.
No facts will convince because they are groomed not to trust anyone.

a skeptic that comes to the conclusion that the official story is bogus is labelled a conspiracy theorist. Most people would consider themselves skeptics whilst always agreeing with the official narrative that is being repeated by the mainstream media.

It's not a conspiracy theory if there's evidence and could be proven. That it's just a conspiracy. We know conspiracies happen. Conspiracies have been proven. The term conspiracy theory is derogatory and it's meant to be so. If you say something ridiculous, you should expect to be ridiculed. The key factor that conspiracy theorists forget is that correlation does not equal causation.

@@williamspringer9447 what are you talkin about? I said as long as there's evidence and can be verified then it's not a conspiracy theory. And I agree that classic philosophy should be taught in schools. I disagree that logic alone is sufficient evidence. If logic alone was sufficient, then we would still believe in the gradualism theory of evolution which is verifiably false.
@@richardthemagician8991 The vast majority of Americans do not know how to logically evaluate an argument, but they sure do know how to ridicule people for disagreeing with them. Nine out of ten American still believe that man walked on the Moon, even though no other nation has been able to reproduce it in over 50 years, and there's no reliable evidence that it ever happened. Any professor at any major university that publicly states that Moon landing was a hoax will lose their job. No rational public debate will be necessary, because ridicule and intimidation will be sufficient to beguile the masses and silence others who know the truth.

I was bit skeptical at the start, but she has very thought-provoking points. I am now working on authority of science and how should we counteract against science denialism, but without being vigilant there Is always danger of supressing free speech. I think French academics are generally more aware or sensitive to this problem, then Germans for example.

I have to say good job, at least her dialogue actually centered on conspiracy theory, Quassim Quassam was supposed to speak on the subject, it was like he was thinking out loud. Elise Wang the only thing I believe she established is that she is a debunker. There is nothing wrong with a good conspiracy theory. And the idea that all conspiracy theories, are just that... theories, and all are without merit , realism and truth is just rediculous.
True, but believing in a conspiracy theory based on other people's hearsay is also ridiculous. Too often those who believe these unfounded theories have no actual facts, and are just trusting some blog or video or FB meme without evidence just because that theory fits what they already believe (like stolen elections with zero evidence), If you arent skeptical even when you hope it's true, you are a puppet of propaganda.

Im the mother of two, i disagree with your false statement about the Santa clause and the Parents! Parents are not covering thier kids with a lie to control them for what soever you think of. We just wanted our kids to be happy and teaching them what is right . This woman must haved a terrible experienced in life with her parents to considering them a liar. Probably because this is a terrible video that tells us nothing. I already know some conspiracies are real. Those are the ones with credible evidence. I don't call Woodward and Bernstein conspiracy theorists as they proved what was going on. I DO call Alex Jones a conspiracy theorist (among other things) as he presents no evidence whatsoever. Maybe you should learn this difference.

One of the best Ted Talks I've seen and absolutely the best speech on the 'Conspiracy Theory' phenomena. Whether by design or just through the sheer mass of nonsense that has been attributed to 'Conspiracy Theorists' the term instantly evokes ridicule in the vast majority of the general population. Unfortunately by totally ignoring the 'Conspiracy' part of the term in this way so many incredibly important discussions are ignored.

History is replete with conspiracy. In fact most of history is about one group or an individual conspiring on another group.
Not all theories that are considered a conspiracy are indeed conspiracies but what a wonderful 'device' to wipe out someone's reasonable critique by suggesting they are wacko by labeling them a conspiracy theorist. Long live people's ability to think freely whether they are right or wrong without being labelled a wacko or unhinged etc.
There is a difference between an actual conspiracy and actual nonsense. I hope you have the mental faculties to differentiate between them.
