  • Step by Step how to verify the spreader setting and therefore calibrate your spreader.

    Written tutorial to support this video :

    The Yard Mastery spreader won't be on sale for at least another 2 weeks, I'm sorry about that. Something we learned is that with these spreaders being pre-assembled, they need some additional packaging (second box too) to minimize damage during shipping. It's going to take a little time to get that outer shell box ordered and fulfilled. I still wanted to release this video because the thinking and approach can apply to ANY spreader you have. RIght now thousands of you are making your first applications of the season and I know this is going to be helpful to you.
    For now, please check out the listing here if you want to read more about it.
    yardmastery.com/products/yard...
    In the meantime, I hope you can find value in this content no matter what spreader you are using. The idea is you calibrate the spreader setting on your equipment at the beginning of every season just to make sure.
    Here is a luggage scale like the one I use to weigh out the fert:
    amzn.to/49LAIfU
    When you weigh out enough for just 2,000 sq ft, now you can verify your spreader setting without risking an entire bag. Spreader settings on bags of fert are the suggested starting point. Apply to a 2,000 sq ft area and see how you do. From there, it's up to you to adjust your setting up or down based on your specific equipment. Also double check that your walk speed is a "double fast" walk and your overlap is throwing back to the wheel tracks of the previous pass.
    Once you make a couple applications, you'll be used to it, I promise! It's not that difficult and going through this training can help you gain the confidence you need to throw down!

    Does it really matter how it’s calibrated?
    I just put the proper weight of product in hopper for the square footage I have and set the setting low as possible and criss cross the lawn until it’s empty.
    I figure I get more even coverage too.

    Easy way is just adjust hopper opening just to barely/smoothly drop prill size onto spreader without plugging.
    Then weigh out amount needed for sq/ft and put it all down evenly

    Hi Allen! I've been away from watching you for a while, sorry about that. At my previous address, I used all your techniques, all your products and advice and I will say, I had the best looking lawn in the neighborhood, thanks to you, the neighbors always commented and asked how I did it. My lawn looked better than neighbors that had the professionals. We have since sold the house and now renting a house that has HOA, where they take care of the lawn. Planning on retiring at the end of year and moving to NC. I have a full bag of Flagship left over 24-0-6, a small lawn and my spreader. Don't know when the lawn guys are coming here in Albany NY to spread fert, I thought they would've been here long by now, possible cut backs, IDK. Question: is it ok to put down an application of Flagship? will this interfere with the regular application the contract lawn guys do? I know I'm renting, but I still like a good looking lawn. Will my application be too much if for some reason the lawn guys show up in a couple of weeks to apply theirs?. Thank you😀 Miss your videos, but I'm back for the fun!!

    Using an Earthway 2600 i make 2 passes, east-west then north-south. with a setting about 7-7.5 each pass. Yes it takes longer but 1: you get a more even spread and 2: because it takes longer I can ignore the honeydo list for at least one more beer. "No babe, I'm making precise calculations and need to be left alone so I don't burn the grass"

  • @keithb2024

    Let's say that you do find that the spreader settings are off, like more of a 22 than a 14 on the Earthway, is there a way to calibrate the spreader to 14? That way you know if the bag says 14, it's correct at 14? I know that there could be forces of nature at work here, like speed, but that would be nice if the Earthway could be calibrated to a "neutral" setting. I remember when i purchased my Earthway, I believe the instructions said to put in a 1/4 drill bit and open to a certain setting and then tighten a thumb screw somewhere, but it seems like that could be counter-intuitive to the point of calibration.

  • @PatrickHealy
    @PatrickHealy 2 месяца назад

    Solid vid, Allyn. Thank you for this. If the spreader is off, is there a way to actually calibrate it or are we relegated to tweaking the setting and just sticking with that? I'd imagine many have a way to adjust the openings, right?

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  2 месяца назад +1

      excellent question! And yes there are ways to further tweak the actual spreader to ensure the drop holes are properly opening and closing, etc. I'll be making some content going more into that here on the YM spreader very soon. I'll probably post those videos on the YM RUclips Channel here: www.youtube.com/@yardmastery

    One thing to be careful with, some fertilizers have different "bag rates". Where the front of the bag might say "Up to 14,000 Sq. Ft" but if you read the back, the recommended rate only treats 11,000 Sq. Ft. I found that last weekend with the Scotts Green Max.

    So is the idea that every pass gets hit twice with fert? The original pass, then 3.5 feet over which will get that same spot again? Also, anyone know the settings for the Scott's Whizz?

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  2 месяца назад

      yes correct, that;s the overlap. For hand spreaders, just start at about halfway open and do a 1000 sq ft area then adjust from there. No risk, and you'll figure it out quickly.

    am i doing it wrong? I want to put down 3lbs of nitrogen per 1000 sp feet for my 5000 sq ft of st augustine in central fl. I have a 16-4-8 50 lb bag of fertilizer. i divide 100 by 16 and get my 6.25 lbs of fertilizer = 1lb of nitrogen per 1000. sq feet. so i would need 18.75 lbs per 1000 sq ft of this fertilizer. So i would need 100 lbs of fertilizer to get the 3 lbs of nitrogen per 1000 on my 5000 sq ft lawn. I used the 50 lb bag and evenly spread it on the yard so im looking at 1.5 lbs of nitrogen/1000 sq ft right now. next feeding I will get a 20-0-0 and achieve 2 lbs of nitrogen/1000. is this the right way of doing things? I dont want to burn the augustine but want to get the darkest thickest greenest grass on the block

  • @bullsguy7531
    @bullsguy7531 2 месяца назад

    If you want your broadcast to go out to the wheel track of the previous pass aren't you doubling the pass in that 3.5 ft zone? Why wouldn't you line up your 3.5 feet to 3.5 feet away from the wheel?

  • @benharrison1069
    @benharrison1069 2 месяца назад

    Good video, Allyn, but I either did not understand your instructions or you might have misspoke in your instructions. When using your spreader, you said it throws 3.5 feet to each side of the spreader for a spreader coverage of 7 feet with each pass. I thought I heard you say to move over 3.5 feet for the next pass and throw back to the wheel tracks of the previous pass. If you do that, then you would do an application over the 3.5 feet on the first pass and then another application over the same 3.5 feet on the second pass. If you do it that way you would do a double application over the same 3.5 feet and run out of product before covering the 2000 square feet. Therefore, I think you meant to say to move over 7 feet with each pass (3.5 +3.5 =7 feet) to evenly cover the 2000 square feet application and only throw back to the edge of your previous pass (or maybe a slight overlap). Correct?

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  2 месяца назад

      The overlap is the key to a good application. 👍 you definitely want the overlap all the way back to your wheel tracks. This is how you avoid dark stripes in the grass.

    • @benharrison1069
      @benharrison1069 2 месяца назад

      @Thelawncarenut But, as stated in my previous comment, if I overlap back to the wheel tracks of the previous pass, I would run out of product by covering the overlapped area twice and, therefore, run out of the calculated product before covering the targeted 2000 square foot area, right? What am I misunderstanding here, Allyn?

    My recommendation is not to use that fishing scale, you'll end up dropping the bucket and have fertilizer all over the place. Get a "postal scale" for not much more money, you can place a bucket on the scale, tare it, and then simply pour fertilizer into the bucket while the scale shows you exactly the weight of fertilizer in the bucket. It is a lot easier, especially if you end up needing a lot of fertilizer, you'll also run much lesser risk of spilling fertilizer.

      For the past 40 years I was a drop spreader guy, until this spring...
      My yard isn't very big, plus I have a bushes and flowers in a couple of spots in the middle of the yard. That's why I always used a drop spreader; thinking using a drop would give me more control. At the end of last season my old drop spreader was having issues. For the first time in 40 years this spring I decided to try a broadcast spreader. I was worried the first time I loaded-up and went into the yard, but it turned out ok, and the control I thought I would lose didn't happen. You just have to go by another set of rules more or less. Keep an eye on where you "fling the fert" lol!
      The warm season started a little early in my area I've already spread Flagship & Prodiamine twice on my Fescue. About the middle of May I hope to throw down some Double Dark with a little less nitrogen than the Flagship before the heat of the summer hits.
