Always used sandy loam for leveling as it’s sort of a sandy dirt, rather than straight sand, which can cause burning in sunny areas if you don’t water frequently. Similar to greens burning up on some golf courses since they have such a high sand content and are obviously cut very low. You can also mix some fine sand into regular topsoil in a wheelbarrow and spread. Prefer to have a much higher soil content than sand. Different in different areas of the country and also depends on grass type.

Get the grass thick by proper feeding, sun and water and mowing often (2, even 3 times a week if you can get it growing right). Once thick, you're ready to fight. Start mowing tall (4-5"), and pulling carefully and religiously by sections, if not just scouring your yard and hand weeding before every time you mow. You'll get the hang of it, developing an eye and a feel when pulling (so that you get the whole thing-- or a lot more of it), and then decide if the progress is worth the work (it's a lot of work). I've rid most my 5k' lawn of it. There's not enough I really feel bothered by it anymore, and I know what to do and what it will take if and when I care. We'll see what happens this spring.

Hey Allyn, have you reviewed the newest model of EGOs mower? I saw the older model, but was curious your view on the newest. I am looking for a good mower for my house that is preferably not gas since I do not have a shed or garage to store it in, and chaining it up outside is sketchy and it might got stolen while I sleep, so I was debating electric so I can store it inside. I'm torn between the electric toro or the ego.
Mr. Hayne. I have a couple of questions that maybe you can answer. I live in Southern California about 60mi east of Los Angeles, The weather is hot and dry for most of the summer, routinely reaching in the triple digits, and no rain. I currently have a lawn that I inherited from the former owner, and I have been watching your channel for a while. My back yard has no lawn just concreat and a retaining wall that holds a hill back. My front lawn is small. Roughly 2600 square feet. I have numerous problems with watering mainly there was no sprinkler control, and I ended up replacing all the valves and installing a controller. Now that I have had the sprinklers working for the last 3 months, my lawn is nice and green, with LOTS of weeds. Also I have some "big" dips and valleys in the lawn that the former owner has never taken care of. so I need to continue to work on the sprinklers, they have sunk down, below ground level have nice little circular holes and need to be pulled up again, and the weeds need to go, and the ground needs to be leveled. Should I just kill off what I have and plant Zoysia? Would Zoysia be a good choice? Should I really battle it out and save what I have and start weeding. I love the look of your lawn, Wish I had it here at my home. Thanks for your answer.
@@johnlong9494 it did to a certain extent. It was all green until winter came. I think that the grass is dorment right now so I am going to spray for weeds in a few weeks using off the shelf products following the directions on the labels. I used a brodcast weed and feed that worked well but to get that really nice lawn I will have to start applying specific fertilizers I have seen in his previous videos. I am still considering ripping up the lawn and fixing the sprinklers but that is a really big project. I have other projects that will come first.
I feel like I already know your going to say throw’er down but I have to aerate and overseed in a few weeks. I’m due to throw some milorginite down. Would I have to consider this when picking a starter fert to drop with my seed?

Lately since they changed their tech, I’m finding that my st Augustine is now suffering from areas of fungus and also sod webworm plus broad leaf weeds area appearing on areas where the at Augustine was solid and lush. At my wits ends, as it appears most the lawn care firms near me start well but then after a year decline with their service. I don’t expect miracles for my yard, just would like to keep what I have.
Great video as usual. I'm thinking of leveling some spots in my front yard. I'm in Georgia and have bermuda grass. Is the best time to level in the spring? If so, when is the optimal time to do so, also taking into account that pre-emergent will also be going down in the spring?
So AL, I plan on leveling this weekend and in the video you say to level with sand. I get that, but my soil (up here in Michigan) is loam. Should I use straight sand or do a 80/20 mix? I'm thinking I need to keep the same soil composition ?
The long dormant brown phase is the only reason I don't go with a warm season grass. Then again I have brown cool season grass for 2 summer months. Transition zone problems. 🥴
Also just got a new concrete and paved street. Really weird things growing and had tons of grasshoppers my dad scalped the lawn and left mulched waste now over half the lawn is dead

How can I get rid of torpedo grass in my st Augustine grass lawn?
I want to know how he corrected it here in the Zoysia. What does it look like now (getting better?).
Mr.
Hi, what did you end up deciding? I know it was over a [California] winter, but did the lawn make any progress?
@@johnlong9494 it did to a certain extent. It was all green until winter came. I think that the grass is dorment right now so I am going to spray for weeds in a few weeks using off the shelf products following the directions on the labels. I used a brodcast weed and feed that worked well but to get that really nice lawn I will have to start applying specific fertilizers I have seen in his previous videos. I am still considering ripping up the lawn and fixing the sprinklers but that is a really big project. I have other projects that will come first.
Can you mix Saint Augustine with zoysia Grass
I would not recommend it. They don't play nice.
Was the grass too long to try and level it?
I feel like I already know your going to say throw’er down but I have to aerate and overseed in a few weeks. I’m due to throw some milorginite down. This might have been discussed but a thought crossed my mind.
If I drop milo down tomorrow and overseed in 2 weeks, would there still be a decent concentration of nitrogen? Would I have to consider this when picking a starter fert to drop with my seed?
Nice looking Toro hat.
Thank you! I complained to them that The Lawn Tools had better merch than me so they sent me a whole box lol
Does anyone know if you can sand level Turf Type Tall Fescue?
I think i put to much triple action southern turf builder on my lawn today for the first time, the setting on my spreader was set on a 8 🙁 i think i mess up bad right? 🤒🤒🤒🤒🤒🤒🤒
be sure to water alot and hope for the best!
I appreciate it i just put down liquid aeration because im in Texas! Can I put the raw organic humic acid down after and when should I put it down!!! I really appreciate your videos 💪💪👍👍
11:02. How long it took me to realize this is a collab with The Lawn Tools.
Flip flops in Florida? I wore mine once, my ankles and legs were covered with fire ant bites.
Man i love when its zoysia day on lcn. Because that's what I seeded in spring and I love to learn about it from you.
I love it so much. More content coming now that we are coming into the final growth push!
Up here in Michigan and I just reminisce by watching lcn from years ago when he was cool season cool
Please Hayne, never ever show that sad excuse for a mower again. I think an Office Space bat montage is in order homie...
😂😂😂
love your videos alan . i have a very thick st augustine lawn that mainly keeps the weeds out
sweet!
I am on my third lawn care company in nearly 9 years of living here in Florida.
always a challenge in the transition zone for sure!
Also just got a new concrete and paved street. Really weird things growing and had tons of grasshoppers my dad scalped the lawn and left mulched waste now over half the lawn is dead
Does sand work to level heavy clay soils? Someone told me clay+sand=cement
sand plus portland cement is how you make concrete. Not clay plus sand. That person told you incorrect info.
Moles and badgers have been working my lawn over for several months now. Walking on it, it feels like a WWI battlefield in miniature. They clearly held off their attack until I had just got the lawn looking good.
Im sorry did that receipt say that the leveling rake cost $143 before tax and shipping?!
