  • FM synthesis is powerful and confusing, I did not associate IDM and glitch music with the Yamaha DX7. The FREE software emulation that Digital Suburban has given us is amazing. I have had it for a long time but have not really done a deep dive into it until now. It is giving me a brand new palette of sounds.
    If you are new to FM synthesis, check out my quick 3-minute intro, and check out my Dexed overview if you want to learn more about the synth.

    ~ little sidenote for anyone watching having issues mapping dexed parameters ~
    I found that if you map the parameter to a midi cc automation clip the parameter will then begin to automate naturally. I am doing this in FL Studio and this cleared some of the problems I was having mapping certain parameters (as mentioned in the video as well). To do this right click on the knob and it should show a map to midi cc and then await an input (it will auto-map automation data). Great video!

    This is a fantastic video, thank you so much for taking the time to do this. Something I would love to see as a follow on would be how you are creating these drum sounds within Dexed.

    Been looking at building a MiniDexed box for portable fun. Though I was wondering if I'd also need a drum machine, since none of the old sysex patches sounded very good. Many thanks for showing that a good drum kit is possible. Just starting to wrap my head around this FM stuff.

      Great to hear, I think Conforce uses one of those too? I am planning to pounce on a TX7 or possibly a TX81z if either of them comes up for the right price and then use Dexed + Ableton to modulate the hell out of them

      @@TheFellowPassenger The four Free EG's are the absolute tits for weird sounds. I use mine with a MIDIHub, from Blokas, for even more LFOs. The only thing I don't like is having to use the software to design sounds on it when I'm not using it for glitchy bullshit, I'd love a SysEX controller just for it.

    Unfortunately, windows only has vst3 version. When I use bitwig, I also encounter the problem that random cannot control parameters. But thank you very much for your idea. I think I can use it in other places.

    Great video man! You’re right this synth is a great tool. I noticed that you placed a reverb in the master channel. Do you also do this at your released tracks or it’s just about this video. I’m asking because I’m wondering how this will affect the low frequencies of a track.

    • @TheFellowPassenger
      @TheFellowPassenger  Год назад +1

      Thank you for the kinds words. I know that putting stuff on the master channel is often frowned upon, but I rarely have the opportunity to work with a mastering engineer. I also know it is popular to render the track as a stereo audio file before doing the final mastering tweaks, but... maybe I am to impatient to do that. So yes, I often put things on the master, and yes, this often includes a reverb. Very often a Valhalla Vintage verb, setting it to the 'cross stick room' preset, and an almost completely dry setting. I do this normally before a little bit of compression. It seems to add 'air' to the mix. I assume you are asking this, as this may introduce stereo content across the entire frequency spectrum. And it probably does. That is why I normally place Abletons 'Utility' plug-in towards the end of the chain, and tick the box 'Bass mono' keeping it at 120hz, to keep the lows nice and tight in the center. Do not take this as 'the right way' of doing it. It is just what I have found sounding good to my ears. I hope that helps

    • @konstantinosvaitsis
      @konstantinosvaitsis Год назад

      Yeah stereo content is my concern with reverb and what you say about “utility” keeping it mono under 120HZ is nice approach. Whenever I sent my tracks to mastering engineers they told me to have the master channel clear if I want a nice result. Some producers though, told me that they don’t give a shit they place various plugs at the master channel just keeping mono the “very low” frequencies. I’m thinking breaking the law of the clear master channel for my next tracks and see where it goes. Thanks again man!

    • @TheFellowPassenger
      @TheFellowPassenger  Год назад +1

      @konstantinosvaitsis824 Yes, I can see where they are coming from regarding the master. But regarding the bass frequencies in stereo. There is actually another thing you can do, which would arguably be purer. Because if you first send everything through a reverb, and then squash the low-end back to mono again, you are likely to have modified the original bass signal. You could do some frequency splitting to apply reverb only to everything above 120hz, leaving the low frequencies absolutely intact. There is a neat trick you can do with the multiband compressor. I have done a video on it. ruclips.net/video/IrPfHU8PpLo/видео.html I am using it to create glitch sounds here, but you could use it just to add the reverb

    7:40 I'm using the new version of the Expression control and it isn't doing anything here - is this what you mentioned about VST3 automation issues or am I using it wrong?
    Edit - it is the VST3 issue
