  • Hey, before you shoot me down, I am not going to pretend I am Aphex Twin or know exactly how he is writing his melodies. This tutorial is quite basic melody writing, and how to write some nice uplifting melodies that feels a bit Aphex Twin like. You do not have to have in depth knowledge of music theory, I will use the Minor Pentatonic Scale in D#, in other words the black keys only. This is a scale that was popular with many of the old skool Warp records artsits.
This is the tutorial I would have wanted to see a good few years ago, when I was really struggling with stringing something interesting together. I hope you find it helpful

Got right to the end thinking, no delay used, that's interesting, then you snuck in an echo :)
I enjoyed this. I think it got a bit too busy at the end, but very interesting to watch. Thanks!

Those glides in the melodies also provide a very 'detroitesque' feel.

It's getting there, i'm impressed that you even managed to get close. I've found Richard's style is so unique that it's difficult to replicate due to the sheer amount of little tricks he uses in his compositions.

Yeah, true. The first RDJ tip is to be Welsh-Irish. That's half the battle right there. Second is: be a genius.
But really (and truly, now), the real tip/truth of RDJ is invest yourself in your musical compositions. I know RDJ is like I have 10,000 unreleased songs (so do I RDJ, and they all suck), and it takes me 4 minutes to produce a 6 minute song, and even then, I just do it in my dreams. Yeah, yeah, homie is full of Welsh-Irish doo doo.
But RDJ IS invested in his music. You can tell he had a base musical knowledge, but has cared deeply about the sounds he uses, as much as he would claim otherwise, AND he cares deeply about being nuanced, getting what HE wants out of a sound, a phrase, a passage, a song. He is self indulgent, to the extreme, and thank God, that is one place where that shiz flies, or rather, is required to approach greatness.
If you really intently invest yourself, in your sounds, and your musical phrasing, and you really search within yourself for what is really real, what your spirit IS, in music, you'll make music that is equally as invested as RDJ. It may not be as "good" as RDJ , as he is very accessible, don't now if it is his taste, or if it is a consideration, or if his most accessible work is selected for release, aka prophet, but you'll make music as rich, as worthwhile.
There might be, like 5 people on the planet who are actually, or really into your work, like a dude in Amsterdam, a dude in Copenhagen, a dude in Florida, a dude in Thailand... and you. And there it is. But those people will be VERY into what you are doing, and you'll enjoy the benefits of experiencing success after long years of hard work/investment. There's nothing better. Well, maybe, body massage. But that's "off the table." Oh man, I crack myself up. Also, maybe millions of people will be into your stuff because they're hearing novelty, originality, actual spirit in your music, and you'll be flush with cash, you can buy every synth and sampler there is and a 48 track Neve console to put it all together, and you'll be able to afford a beer, and a little tank you can drive to pick up some milk at the grocery store. Anyway. Gotta go invest myself.

bro, I'm trying to sound like richard, and it takes me 20+ hours to finish a rough draft of a song. What the hell is your workflow like??? it takes me hours to make a 303 line in his style, dialing in velocities and envelopes for everything. How are you able to do this??

My favorite portion was when you worked out the bass. Starting with a foundation then ornamentation via sound design as well as pitches is a good workflow. Came for melodies, stayed for the bass

Very difficult to make out your dialog. Just too quiet. Don't follow RUclips guidlines. Most other channels come through loud and proud. I've got everything maxed on my laptop, system and youtube volumes. Perhaps some eqing for volume, followed by compression and limiting. Don't believe the hype about lufs and all the rest. Don't tell me you can't go louder or youtube will turn you down, that is bs, first most other channels are plenty loud, like its not an issue, I have to turn them down... and RUclips ads sound about 12db rms louder than the loudest RUclips video.
Your music/daw output is plenty loud. It's just your voice, mate. No shade, no hate, just trying to give you a friendly tip to convert more viewers into subscribers. Cause, I hear a channel like this, where I have to pause and rewind a bit and play again trying to get what you said there, and I have to do it 5 times a minute, you better have the most valuable information in the world, or I'm Audi 8,000.
And yeah, my chromebook is a chromebook so sucks, granted, but you can make your videos loud enough to be heard on all devices. If your channel is too loud for some people, they can always turn you down a bit. I can't turn you up anymore, and there are plenty of people on Chromebooks, or in noisy environments.
Please take this as a friendly heads up for your benefit.

Okay, you're receptive! I've got another tip, this one is huge two... I should be charging for this, lol, okay listen up!
Don't stream at 60p. It doubles your video's bandwidth requirement, increases the total carbon footprint of your video, AND it takes the video longer to load, may cause glitching when playing (especially on busy wifi networks, like in a house, you know, where most of your viewers live and access your content!).
And so, that is the downside of 60p versus 30p or 24p... what are the upsides? Oh yeah, 60p looks worse than 30p (* or 24p hereafter). Seriously. There is no upside. I know the number 60 is higher than 30, and usually bigger numbers are better, but this is not always the case. Yes, 2 girl friends may be better than 1, but 10 girlfriends is definitely NOT better than 1. Seriously! I know there is this more is more in tech, but not for frame rate. It makes the video look like... video, it makes the video look cheap. And again, while it looks worse, it also has several technical/environmental liabilities, the worst of which is slow load times, and potentially glitchy playback, which causes people to exit stage left, even, your video with the quickness.
And there is another benefit to you in shooting/editing/uploading at 30p/24p (had to sneak the 24 in there one last time for emphasis...), everything will be lighter/easier/quicker on your system. If you edit, your editing will be twice as light, aka half the file sizes, your video editor will run better, less stress on your system, less heat stress on your CPU and GPU (graphics processor), HEAT is the destroyer of every system. Your renders will go twice as fast... your uploads and encoding will be twice as fast. 60p, 120p was the biggest scam in AV tech in the last 15 years. For real. Don't fall for it!
Okay, that's two free friendly tips. I'm gonna have to charge for the next one!
