  • In this video I show a few ways to make beats in Ableton that are a bit crazy and all over the place, similar to that of Aphex Twin, but I'm not going to show you how to sound like Aphex, because only he can do that. Support me on Patreon to download this set plus more.

Try using an LFO on the Arpeggiator Style to break up the pattern. Another on the Note length gives you a variation of, well, note lengths. Try rates around 1/3 of a bar on Random waveform to start with.
Use a mapping M4L device like MIDI Shaper to lock the values into 1/2, 1/4, 1/8,... if that's what you need.

For more control you can put the midi fix + inst on an input monitored midi track. Output from the midi track with all the generative clips goes to the new track with your instrument on it. You can now make dummy clips on the inst track that have automations for all your midi fx and inst parameters - but they are separate clips from the ones generating all your note information. This also allows for you to route multiple midi tracks to a single instrument

Probabilistic beats vs Ratcheting/Rolling (an annoying method that definitely works):
    1. Place another Velocity effect on each pad of the Drum Rack, and set a constant value (doesn't matter what). Turn all of them off.
    2. Starting with a blank clip, create automation that turns each of the per-pad Velocity devices OFF. Use this as the "master" clip to copy-paste clones from.
    3. For any clip that will be programmed with ratcheting, change the automation to turn the per-pad constant Velocity effect ON for pads that will ratchet in that clip, and then tune the static velocity value to the desired sample (which can be automated per-roll if desired). Make sure, when creating a ratcheting clip, to only copy the "master clip" (or any non-ratcheting variant, really) to ensure that probabilistic beats continue on non-ratcheting pads.
    4. Happy birthday dear Richard.
I understand that this is a time-consuming and boring way to create this effect, but it does work. Maybe Ableton should do something about that (like improved cross-clip multi-device automation copy/paste!).

I don’t know who is more insane. This guy that programs the hell out of it and does the job within few patterns or me that I write and automate manually all my patterns and I end with 30 patterns only for my drumbeats? I personally find this awesome (I do) but also I don’t believe that this technique has a lot of control or detail over the drumbeat. I use randomizers(!) in other stuff but but on my beats. Great stuff though. Really interesting

A much bettet to this. And the way Aphex does it. Is better explained by this guy
      ruclips.net/video/5yQRp4j2RQM/видео.html
Aphex does not randomize his drums. He's a master, he meticulously program's them manually. But you to take the note size down to 64th. Anyone can "Get the computer to do it". But that's cheating

I guess I'm a peasant and I use the random note technique (you can do different type of drums by having the same number of each corresponding to the random value; or just different tracks). Been using LFO sample and hold on parameters lately also; and made a little thingy in max for live for chance of notes and velocity.
