Camp set up looks pretty good. In a way I envy the bushcrafters in the UK a bit. While there's no free to use, crown land there, like we have in Canada, you guys can be a bit more liberal with your in camp cooking, food carrying and storage. Not calling you out specifically, but I've watched a lot of UK YT bushcrafters and you guys are lucky that you don't have any apex predators to concern yourselves with. Keeping food in and around camp while wild camping here, can potentially be issuing an invitation to any bears, coyotes or wolves that be roaming the land around where your camp is set up. While not a huge concern (bears are typically on then shy side) , it is one we have to factor in; especially if we're in the same camp set up for a few days/nights. I too have been making a lot of my own kit, and have for years. It's really a great way to bond with your gear when you take the time to source the materials, and fabricate it, and then use it. Anyway, great video. Keep it up. #TheCanvasMan
Thank you for that, it's good to know there are others out there who also make their own gear where they can, and you're right about the bond you get with self-made gear (I suppose you're conscious of the time and effort you've put into it? At least that's one of the reasons!). Here in the UK we are very fortunate that the only real venomous animal (and it's not even an apex predator!) we have is the Adder, and even then, they're pretty few and far between! I'm planning on a multi day hike and camp over in the mountains of Romania later in the year, which are home to bears, so will be purchasing bear spray over there, and will restrict the cooking to dehydrated meals for safteys sake! @@SussexOutdoors Just finished making a 5 x 7 waxed canvas ground sheet from scratch today. Nothing like doing it for oneself. You have to try and get over here for a trip to try wild camping in places that are still, very wild. BYW dehydrated food is a good start, but only as afar as pre-cooking storage in concerned. As soon as you add that water to the foil packet and the aroma of that food hits the breeze, all bets are off. Keep your food in a scent locking bag (along with any toiletries) , well away from your campsite, and make sure to clean up everything after cooking/eating. Bear spray is probably the best option for your situation but also consider a mini air horn, or even bear bangers if they are available where you are going. Best of luck and have a fun and safe trip.

I was thinking about the pillow pouch on your blanket, you could also slip a sleep mat into it to stop slippage if on a slight slope 👍Lee

Hi James, that looked like a lovely camp and I really liked your setup with the canvas tarp and bedroll, good skills sir. I've got a very similar Thornhill/Outhaus setup and you've inspired me to get that out for an upcoming camp! How did you get on just sleeping on the bedroll, did the wool give you enough insulation? I usually use a section of foam roll mat or debris bed when I use mine. Oh and many congratulations for passing the 1k milestone, very well deserved indeed, your videos are always enjoyable and very well produced. It's all because #TheCanvasMan can! 👍
Hi Barney! Thank you so much for the kind words, I really appreciate it! As for the roll mat, I did bring a slim self inflating mat to go on top for that evening, as I knew the temperature would drop to not far off 0°, and there really wasn't enough leaf litter to collect up to make a suitable cushion between me and the ground (and there are no firs there, so spruce fronds were out of the question as well!) I do plan on taking it out again to a different bit of woodland that have firs, oaks, beech and birch, so should have plenty of detritus to gather and pile up underneath for its next outing... Plus the weather will be a little warmer (hopefully!) so I'll have lest chance of the ground sucking my life force away overnight! 🤣. If it's any consequence though, it's the same construction as the ground cloth sit mats I make, and I've been using them over the last 7 months with my bum on the ground, and not felt the cold through it... Well, I specifically made them with ample room for up to a size 14 shoe, I'm an 11 to 11 1/2 depending on footware, and I have loads of room inside (the down expands to fit your foot!). @mrwildwales has a pair,, and he's a size 12 to 12 1/2, and he's happy with the fit, if that helps you decide? I haven't yet done a video about the cordage, as that was the first time using my 'quick deploy' ridgeline... And it's had a extra adjustment since that video! I've added it to my list of things to do and I'll try and get out in the next few days and put a little instruction video together!

If it's not a trade secret, can you say where you get your fabrics from? I'm looking to make some kit for myself, so always on the lookout for good supliers. #TheCanvasMan Was looking at your down boots before, being a size 13 I wasn't sure if they'd fit though 😀
Well, I specifically made them with ample room for up to a size 14 shoe, I'm an 11 to 11 1/2 depending on footware, and I have loads of room inside (the down expands to fit your foot!). @mrwildwales has a pair,, and he's a size 12 to 12 1/2, and he's happy with the fit, if that helps you decide?
