F/O: captain we just crashed
Captain: whatever let's continue
Whatever, Whatever, continue.... YOU have the controls now though, we can do what we want, your crash now.

Fellow Italian pilot, flying in the US (fortunately). That “continua, continua” below minimum, on a no precision approach, gave me the chills! Glad everyone is ok.
I dont know how you guys do it, flying without being able to see anything around you is scary!

@Giovanni in your opinion, is this normal from a 13000 hour pilot?
How irresponsible is that?!? Jesus. A similar but much more tragic decision happened in Smolensk that same year

I really like the actual audio, it adds to the realism, and creates empathy with the situation as it unfolds, if the majority agree please include on future videos (where possible).
Yes, it's great getting to hear the audio.
You can then hear the casual arrogance in the Captain's tone of voice, when he said "Whatever, continue" to the FO telling him he could not see anything.
I love it. Frankly, TFC is one of the best dudes ( or dudettes ) on YTube. Whenever there's a New For You I start applauding. The audio really adds to the whole production. In this case, it's really awful: "whatever, whatever." WTF...? It's hard to believe.
Agree, audio and photos of the crew always add to these events.
Hey, everybody give a 👍 to this comment... EVERYBODY!!
Yes. Great addition. Excellent video.
I’m pretty sure that “whatever, whatever” is not something I would want to hear from a captain while negotiating a sketchy approach like this, not being able to see shit.
Lol
Yeah the captain just continue continue but ur passengers lives is on u captain
Complacency kills. Fortunately, not this time.
That and "oops".
There’s no way I can’t agree with that
F/O: "Our landing gear just collapsed into the fuselage!"
CAPT: "Whatever."
We can do whatever we want, continue
See ? Wasn't so bad ! Bene 👮

F/O: "Captain, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the clouds?"

At some point the MCAS started blaring "Career over! Career over!"
...Pull out your license! Woop, woop, Pull out your license!

Yep and indeed that happened. I read both were fired
I bet they're still flying.
Airbus has no MCAS
Even though he couldn’t see, he knew the ground was around there somewhere. He was right. He kept going and found it.
Yeah right? Shit at least he landed the damn thing
Hey I am no pilot, but I can say with certainty I could get a plane on the ground 100% of the time.
It may never take off again after that, and it may not be in the same number of pieces, but it will be on the ground.
Real audio's introduction is FANTASTIC,keep makin like this in future
It does have to be available for that. I’m personally not sure if many CVR’s are given free to hear for the public but I’m no expert so forgive me if I say the dumbest thing ever.

My favorite features from this channel
When ATC informed the pilots to expect a non-precision approach they didn't mean it quite that literally.
LMAO
A good landing is one where everyone walks away. A great landing is one where you can re-use the aeroplane....
I would. ^
if your standards are fairly low
I should become a pilot I make a lot of “good” landings in GTA
I would say it's the other way around.
I like this saying a lot
There is no cure for stupid. "I can't see anything..." "Whatever - continue!"
Translated incorrectly. "Va benne" means "OK" or "all good"/ "all is well" not "whatever"
*+Don Moore*
Not stupidity. Arrogance and complacency. "Va bene" translates to "alright". Although the channel used the phrase "va benne" which means "it goes well" which doesn't really make sense. Regardless, the captain was arrogant and had a tone that implied he knew more so do what he says.
That's kind of the basis of instrument flight though. To fly not being able to see anything. The purpose of instrument approach and landings is do an approach until you see a couple runway lights, then make the landing. They were doing mostly all the right steps with the exception of descending below MDA it's just that their landing was short most likely due to pilot illusion compounded with rain and potentially windshear.
@@Kaimine08 From the cockpit audio it's clear they saw 4 red PAPIs and should have aborted any attempt at landing there and then. Also you ignore minimums and SOPs at your peril, doubly so in IMC !
@@pasoundman I agree. It's sad to see pilots who have the experience but are so complacent that 4 red papis doesn't scare the hell out of them. I'm a private pilot and if I see all red on an approach on an excellent VFR day I'm putting either enough power in to fly straight until I intercept the glide or I'm going around. If it's at an unfamiliar airport, I'm going around on short final with all red, I'm going around. I can't imagine seeing all red on an instrument approach and thinking... meh, probably fine.

The first officer was giving correct callouts, the captain was just being an ass
Four Reds is never good regardless of altitude. I prefer to land long so 1 Red is good enough for me. However, I only need about 1500 feet to land. An A319 needs about 4000 feet fully loaded.

Tutta la mia carriera in accademia di volo ci è stato inculcato che le comunicazioni vanno fatte in inglese indipendentemente da paese, nazionalità o quant'altro.

Yeah, but I'd rather fly with someone who's done thousands of successful landings than one whose done a couple dozen. The more experience a pilot has in varying conditions, the better his or her chances of nailing the next one, too.
The reality is even worse :
"On short final, copilot called captain that all four PAPI's lamps were red so aircraft was too low. Captain took over the control of the aircraft without referring to the copilot and continued the approach."

They were a small LCC, they started in 2003, grew to become the first LCC in Italy for transported passengers, but then rapidly declined and went out of business in 2012. Flew them a few times between Northern Italy and Sicily, they were kind of okay from what a passenger could experience, good enough for a short flight. They were found to be terrible at safety after this accident which contributed to their demise together with the financial crisis, raise in oil price and poor management including the CEO stealing money from the company (not sure if he went to jail but he sure went on trial).

When you are in doubt, you can always go around..
Thankfully no fatalities happened in this accident, but since there are so many deadly accidents happened due to pilots stubborness over continuing the approach meaning many of them didn't take it seriously..

At 7:46 when the Captain asks "do I extend the flaps" was an "oh crap" moment for me and things only seemed to get worse after that. This Captain did not impress me in a good way. Also when you stop and think about the fact that there were actually 2 Captains on the flight deck and this happens it's a wonder those passengers didn't get killed. The good Lord above was most assuredly watching over them. That instruction of the Captain "continue continue" boggles my mind.

Captain: "I'm gonna do what's called a pro gamer move right here"
Flown by Francesco Schettino. "Whatever, continue!"

I fell into a strange rabbit hole with your channel, but I love how realistic it feels. It's like I can feel the terror of the people on the plane, which is horrifying. I like it, keep up the good work!
With a 2nd captain deadheading in the cockpit jumpseat, 3 heads shudda been better than 2 - - the captain was stubborn & the 1st officer was complicit in violating the MDA SOP. Wonder if the captain was fired.
I hope so
Carol Williams yes, I remember (I’m italian) the 2 pilots were fired. Don’t know the destiny of the other cpt, however.... he lost anyway the job because of bankruptcy of the airline, few months later
Even in modern times, arrogance can still raise it's ugly head. The captain should have been held responsible for the costs of the aircraft.
I think its a prime example of peer pressure in the cockpit. Too many chiefs here and nobody man enough to follow the fundamental safety rules properly regardless of this resulting in a go around......
This highlights the pressure pilots put on themselves to land first time no matter what. Maybe that has to change.

It's a bad translation, and it's caused dozens of comments like this. "Vabbè" actually means "alright, Ok" and not a flippant "whatever"
The reason that the airline has those policies about not descending below a certain point until you see the runway is not so that the pilots can just ignore it. Nobody is perfect and you shouldn’t assume that you can pull off anything and that everything will be alright. I feel that the airlines should me more strict about enforcing these MDAs or other altitude restrictions because I find that they are often a factor in many incidents or accidents that occur during landing. I’m glad that everybody survived.
These minimums are actually flying regulations, enforced by each countries aviation governing body. They are nearly universal in their procedures. These pilots may have lost their licenses, jobs, and in some countries could face criminal charges.

Me too. That’s what I have noticed. I get nervous when the Captain is in his late 50s nearing retirement. 🤔
Captains are usually experienced pilots and are usually in the last third of there careers. Correlation is not causation.
Nothing like a good aviation crash documentary to watch before bed!
The 3rd MDA violation causing crash in a row! God damn it!
Thanks for the great video.
This is what happens when the captain wants to play the hero (having the other captain watching the crew from the jumpseat). A go-around is mandatory when no minimum required visual clues are obtained at MDA. Poorly planned, poor decision making and poorly executed. No heroes on that flight for sure.
Correct. There are plenty of airports where 367m short means landing on a road or beach.

I was under the impression, wrongly, obviously, that all ATC worldwide was conducted in English.
As was I. I guess for the most part if it’s a person speaking the same language as the controller, they both speak their language? I was watching a video with a Swedish ATC and they did the same thing. Spoke English to other pilots but Swedish to Swedish pilots.
@@lutherannn live on an island in sweden, my dad flies ppl. He speaks to the controller in swedish but all the commercial traffic is english no matter what
Maybe Italian because this was not an international flight?
I feel like people are more effective in their native languages anyways, so I think unless it is international, pilots and ATC should be speaking their native languages.
It's not uncommon to hear non English comms on ATC, however in flight training they impressed upon us the importance of using a common language as much as possible as other Aircraft and Pilots can also hear the clearances, issues or directions given by ATC and have an idea if anything said conflicts with what they themselves have been told or are doing.
I believe (but I may be wrong) the Milan Linate Runway incursion and subsequent collision had some factor of language barrier as one pilot received a clearance in Italian the other pilot had no idea that he'd be about to cross an active runway with a plane rolling.
In short I think that regardless of location, national pride and what not all communication should be carried out in a common language.
