- On January 14, 2020, the right engine of the Boeing 777-200ER operating Delta Air Lines Flight 89 suffered a number of compressor stalls and burst into flames just after takeoff from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX); while returning to the origin airport for an emergency landing, the flight crew dumped fuel over populated areas adjacent to the city of Los Angeles. Find out what really happened.

It always amazes me that any pilot can understand what ATC is saying at all.
Agreed!
You develop an ear for it pretty quickly when that's your chosen profession!
It’s easier with that headset
I used to liken understanding certain ATC speak to trying to read a doctors handwriting. Although I should also say that as comm's equipment has got better, the transmissions are so much easier to understand - and I don't just mean the aircraft to atc chatter, i mean the scanners and recording devices as well.
@@seanlonergan7489 there's a few professionals that still need a bit of work tho. Such as - and i will hazard a guess you know what's coming! - certain Air China pilots/crews. God bless them. Im certain they have incredible pilots but they do get a bit of grief online. Have you watched any of their videos on RUclips?
Hope you're good man.

I'm surprised they didn't ask for vectors over the ocean for a safe dump

You can land overweight. Depending how much the landing weight was and the type of touchdown, it could be a simple inspection.
Oh, when planes do land overweight, they tend to overheat their brakes. They taxi off the active and set their brakes which causes the wheels to over heat, that cause a fuse to melt and that causes flat tires. And when the airplane looses more than one tire per axil, you have to get a special Rhino jack which is hard to find. And you are working on a taxiway to change all those flat tires, and you may not have enough wheels in stock and you have to go borrow wheels from other carriers. Yep, been there.
Finally a story that doesn't end in death
Just cancer and other injuries
Imagine you being out having a barbeque and suddenly jet fuel starts raining down

I watched these videos all day yesterday, all last night until the wee hours of the morning, and after waking up this morning, I started watching again, into the afternoon today. These are so well put together. I love that you use Flight Simulator to give us a feel of things going on. You don't narrate - instead you allow us to become immersed in the drama. You include talk between the controllers and the flight crew. You include the information about date, time, location, flight duration, age of plane, captain and f/o. You include details about the investigation results, and you inform us how many died. Then, you add in that beautiful music - I never tire of hearing it. I don't subscribe to many channels - I literally have 10 subscriptions, and I've been on RUclips since 2006. This is one of my favorite channels now, and is on my subscribe list. Amazing work!
I agree. This channel is amazing and very well produced. I too love that they caption it instead of narrate it. It kind of keeps the respect for any victims of these incidents and guarantees the content is produced with respect, taste, and class. While also being riveting and educational. A one time exposure while unpleasant, doesn't have a long lasting physical or neurological effects. Nonetheless, the pilots should have been more mindful especially if it wasn't an absolute emergency. My reasoning for their dump over population would be that they didn't want to take a chance of going out over water, just in case it became a sudden emergency.
@@BillAnt yeah .. that doesn't excuse what they did .. hope company find and pilots lost licensing!
As a retired ATC ( and ATC tower supervisor), I always hated it when 'secrets' (fuel dump, etc.) where being withheld from me. They could have easily dumped that fuel at 8000 feet, but rather chose to spray it all over LA county at a low altitude. I only wonder what else they were keeping from ATC, as it all sounds a bit suspicious to me. Even if the flight crew hadn't requested equipment at the runway, I would have made the call (and did many times) to get it out there. If there are any former or current ATC's out there, you all know that if your gut say something ain't right, it probably ain't right.
What really gets me though is all of these conspiracy theorists who think that this was intentional, and that planes are making chemtrails on purpose for mind control. I always find it hilarious when these people who know nothing about aviation start spouting their theories. also which airport were you ATC for? Just curious.
Hack Fabrication I’m not ATC, but have been talking to y’all for over 50 years. I am a multi engine instrument rated commercial pilot with several ratings and an A&P., Air Forced trained beginning in 1968. I too think something else was happening and caused the urgency to step up a few notches on top of the engine shut down. It took 10 days to get the aircraft back in service. An engine change can be done in one day. An FAA report I read said they found metal in the back of the engine so I’m pretty sure it was changed. The tone in the voice of who ever was talking to ATC, I figure it was mostly the copilot, changed after the engine shut down. I have not been able to find a final report on the FAA’s or the NTSB’s web site. The report I did read was from 3 days after the event and said they would take a few weeks to complete the investigation. That report was a response to three congresswomen from CA who wrote a letter asking a lot of questions.
@@billmorris2613 They shutdown the right engine altogether rofl. I don't know about you and I'm not a pilot but I dont wanna be circling around the ocean to dump fuel with just one engine.
Jes Chr I am a commercial pilot for over 50 years and would not want to stay airborne on one engine in a twin engine aircraft any longer than absolutely necessary. When I was in the Air Force we were required to land ASAP if we had to shut down an engine when state side. The requirement was different in a combat zone.
@@jeschr3462 Thanks goodness you aren't a pilot and you clearly don't watch aviation disasters regularly b/c all commercial jets are designed to fly on a single engine and all commercial pilots are supposed to be trained to fly on 1 engine.

I just can’t believe those well trained and experienced pilots can make such a thing like that.
They were being selfish.
They did the proper thing with the major failure, but it is a head scratcher with the continued fuel dump below 5K and over populated area! I just don't know all facts to make a judgement!
@@ChancetheCanine the procedure was correct but the actions in how they did it were completely idiotic.. the controller asked multiple times if they were going to dump fuel, they said absolutely nothing. the flight was also over water before this all started, the controller could of vectored them to dump fuel safely over the ocean at 8k ft and kept them closer to the airport if there were any major issues that forced them to land sooner.
A true pilot is one who can fly while plane is in distress. This pilot seemed to just want to get on the ground with necessities an after thought.
@jetsfan2351
One can be trained and trained but when the SHTF all sense of calm goes out the window and "arms flail and oh my God what should I do" reaction takes over.
Love how people are actually defending the pilots here for dumping fuel wherever. As a pilot myself, I fail to see any urgent need in this situation to dump fuel at low altitudes above LA. ATC even asked if they need to dump fuel while over the water and the pilots declined. They never told ATC they were dumping fuel to begin with. Engine had a compressor stall, although serious, not serious enough to wait until final to dump fuel.
Exactly, they were impatient, which a lot of you guys like to do that. Shut number 2 down, go into a pattern over the ocean, and make an upwind final, no need for a downwind landing. What is it, another 20 minutes. A triple 7 should have no problems on 1 engine and they'll move around whoever to get you into rotation when you're ready. A lot of poor decisions. I only have a PPL w/ IFR btw
Exactly!!
If you were a pilot, you wouldn’t be armchair quarterbacking another pilots choices when you weren’t there and only know what you saw on RUclips. So sit down and stfu and stick to video games
If it isn't an emergency to not have a reliable engine what is an emergency? The pilots first responsibilities are the lives of the passengers. If my flight lost an engine the situation could get worse. I just want the passengers on the ground safely as soon as possible before something else breaks.
@@jcraigshelton why are you so upset? I wasn’t there but there is plenty of facts on this. They dumped fuel without advising ATC and even telling them they didn’t need to dump fuel. So they dumped fuel at a very low altitude causing injuries. If they felt the need to dump fuel, that’s understandable, however not advising ATC and then dump fuel on schools is a poor decision made by the PIC.

exactly and no more.
he was scared that the other engine fail so he did that ...its stupid thing but he justify himself that he landed the plane safely at least saving his live

@@Cultural_Supremacist
he probably think the same but atc cant refuse pilot land request specially in emergency if do he probably will charged with manslahter if the plane crashed ... the pilots hold full responsability of their decisions even if they like to crash land on the runway
@@Cultural_Supremacist Planes can land overweight. Requires an inspection. But that isn't a huge issue when maintenance have to change an engine anyway.
This is just insane. Did the crew somehow think they could get away with dumping fuel at low altitude over a populated area... without anyone noticing?!
@Slomofogo Oh sweet I just had avocado toast for breakfast I also had no idea these pilots did this.
@Mike Kabakov They had plenty of opportunity to dump the fuel away from populated areas, and deliberately chose not to. They then hid their actions from ATC. Stop trying to defend the indefensible.
So what? they didn't die!
They did and got away with it.
The instrument panel should display checklists for certain situations. If you hit the fuel dump button, it should ask you are you above 5000ft, yes/no? Can you see school children below, yes/no?

@@thomass1620 That still doesn't justify what pilots did wtf..
They had been ASKED to dump the fuel while still on top of ocean multiple times but they ignored that option, the pilots are experienced which is why what they did here is unacceptable because not even amateur pilots would do something like this..
Good pilots also respect the ground under them!! Unless they are in situation while it's out of their control, which is not in this case..
I grew up in the LA suburbs right next to LAX and spent a lot of my childhood on Dockweiler Beach with departing planes flying over our heads out over the ocean. I actually live in that area and was around when that happened. I was walking around the area heading to do errands and felt like a weird liquid and I thought it was water till its smell. Delta gave some medical help for those affected for some weeks but our community was angry during our town meeting about the incident. The fact that the pilots lied and dropped fuel on our community makes me pissed at the fact that they decided to drop dangerous liquids like if there wasn’t a community under where they dropped it.
The crew should have subsequently lined up against a wall and been hosed down by jet fuel by affected citizens, and also fired from their jobs and have had to pay the medical bills of those affected

I used to work for a very large company that did maintenance and repairs on just about every commercial plane out there, if people saw some of the things they did to cut corners it would scare the shit out of them every time they stepped on a plane. That was yrs ago, I hope it's better now. Anyway, I love these videos, it's a really great job putting them together this way. It must be a alot of work.
It’s no different now. Every business in the world cuts corners because they are relying on humans to do things right every time. While unlikely that a major airline would direct that corners be cut, some of the people that do the work will always cut corners for a myriad of reasons. The tech is tired, lazy, disgruntled, incompetent, incorrectly trained, not feeling well, thinks they know a better way, doesn’t have the exact part needed, and on and on with reasons why. It happens every day in every industry, and the only reason most of these screw ups don’t result in catastrophes is because most industries are not working on life and death issues, and when they are it usually requires a series of events to come together to result in a disaster, not just one singular cause.

He got the plane down safely. What if he lost the other engine for the same reason? The idea that he had all day is an assumption.
I think both pilots were dumbasses. Esp how the co pilot was talking to controllers...
This video was absolutely amazing! All the visuals made me feel like I was experiencing what was going on. Tysm for this!!
Why didn't they dump fuel immediately when they were over the ocean ?
The pilots sound like they don't know what to do, or they are distracted.
This doesn't sound like a normal problem they have trained for.
They are not answering ATC
Something is going on in the cockpit that is taking their attention
With the engine off they should have control over the situation and not be so distracted.
they were doing it. y know. mile high club
They sounded stoned haha
And dump it at 5000 or higher where it evaporates. Nah lets just dump it onto a CHILDREN's elementary school and over housing.
@@SWIFTO_SCYTHE couldnt they activate the auto destruct?
Yea just thank god not both engines failed otherwise they'll make like a statue with the attitude then they would have Crashed at the school.
I love your channel so much!! The details you give and the amazing simulations are unlike anything I'e seen anywhere else :) Keep up the great work!!
Would have been nice to know what happened in the aftermath, what was the pilots’ excuse, were they disciplined, did anybody sue the airline, etc. Also you should’ve added some screaming from inside the cabin when the flames appeared. J/K, TFC!
😄
i agree, random screaming passenger sounds would really spice these up a notch
Dangerously close to "clickbait"
What do you mean?! It’s not even close to click bait!
@@VLG105 Not really. The engine really got into flames not like the thumbnail, but still it got into flammes. And the bursting is correct. He just didn’t specify what burst into flammes.
Yeah. I was expecting something like the Blue Panaroma flight 1504.

It's a blessing that everyone survived!! I'm not too happy about the ones on the ground who were effected by the crew dumping fuel over populated area, but at least there were no fatalities. When I saw Delta, I was holding my breathe because I only fly with them. Glad everyone survived!!

I kinda liked the title because I was expecting a crash but then was pleasantly surprised that they all made it.
Whenever my mom tells me not to be scared to fly, I just show her all these videos! 😃
You shouldnt be. Occurrences like these are rare and flying is very safe.
I've been on hundreds of flights and am still here!
That flight did not endanger the passengers. Hello!!
Scared of what? Everyone landed safely without incident.
You may also tell her the statistics of you dying in an airplane crash!
Very well done video. The Captain did not have an immediate emergency and could have easily remained over the Pacific dumping fuel at altitude. Very serious mental lapse by two supposedly qualified and experienced pilots. Inexcusable, really.
Hitting 6 schools with one fuel dump has to be a record.
What I vividly remember from this emergency landing was that moment you mentioned at 11:54, I saw a video of it on Twitter. Pretty sure a lot of kids got sick from that, really upsetting.

The ATC was probably thinking, "You did say you are flying heavy right? And you don't need to dump fuel?" I've watched enough videos on the channel to know when flying heavy, you can not land properly with all that fuel.
The simulation software is just amazing!
it sure is - last year when i had time I filled up terabytes of external HDD's by running some kind of map scan over every part of the country and having photo representations of everything (then they have something that gives it 3d modeling) 8 TB worth of stuff and it made xplane 11 look amazing. I could fly over and see my own house, and fly 500 miles north with a small plane to get an idea of what my holiday drive was going to be like, essentially seeing every detail and house on the way in high res. They even had a pay airport which had the exact interior of O'Hair airport. Manhattan, every building completely detailed exterior and 3d modeled. This reply is making me want to find all those hard drives and start playing this addictive simulator I had to put away last year bc it was seriously taking precedence over real life. Now that life isn't so real - why not? Thanks for talking me into this - Rodger with your observation and The Flight Channel with these highly highly detailed videos I am also addicted to.

Bursting into flames really means, taking off, flying for an hour, landing at the origina airport and not on fire. Got it.
Pilots were totally irresponsible and should have been sacked
They are responsible for the lives aboard!
Don Raptor and what about the lives on the ground. They totally ignored the rules for fuel dumping and they injured people on the ground due to their irresponsibility
Yeah, they probably got fired and had to go to American.
Thanks for this video, I've always wondered what would happen if fuel was dumped over inhabited land instead of the sea, as they usually do in your videos. This flight crew deserves a heavy penalty for endangering public health so recklessly!!
They can dump overland but only at high altitude so it disperses and breaks into tiny molecules
Delta airlines should be fined heavily for being this irresponsible and suspend the pilot and FO for 30 days without pay for intentionally dumping fuel at low altitude and harming the health of innocent bystanders. A very Callous and irresponsible behavior on the part of these men.
Title of the video should be : Pilots dump fuel on couple of schools and kids and get away with it 👍🏻
Didn't really get away with it
How was he assposed to know he was over schools? He had to do what he had to do to get the plane down.
@@moderndissident5930 They were over water and high enough for the fuel to not reach the ground, but chose to dump fuel only after they were low and over land where they would drench whoever is below them. That's not what they 'had to do'.
"No severe injuries reported. News at 11"
They just wanted to land without delays as they were scared. It's understandable.

@3:27 I like the view from the cabin with just enough scratches, dirt, smudges, and glare on the window to make it look very realistic. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Those scenes look so real, I thought maybe they WERE actual videos from the incident!
I’ve watched and listened to several aircraft emergencies and I have to say this is one of the worst. The crew handled this very poorly and luckily no one was seriously hurt.
They did the job, but they were in a big hurry, hence the fuel dumping. Did they thik the other engine would fail soon?
so the two remaining unanswered questions are; What was the captains rationale for dumping fuel so low over a populated area & what punishment (if any) was metered on them for not following the fuel dumping regulations?
Ohh so they were the ones who dumped the fuel over Los Angeles? I remember now
East or west "the flight channel is best " please post a video on thai airways
Already done
corny
Game name
I think the pilot was really spooked by the engine trouble and just wanted to get back to LAX asap; didn't want to spend time flying to safe zones to dump fuel.
Imagine if the mothers of those kids were karens:
*"I TOLD YA CHEMTRAILS WERE REAL"*
or if the kids were smokers
I don't know if chemtrails are real or not but it's rather rude of you to call anyone who has an opinion that differs from the official narrative a karen.
@@danielpavlick5006 of course chemtrails aren't real. Literally everyone knows that.

Good thing none of those elementary kids were sneaking a smoke.
I lived in Elk Grove Village IL and my condo parking lot was a great place for commercial planes landing at O'Hare to dump excess fuel. Most of it atomized because of altitude of planes relative to normal pre-landing altitude - but my windshield and hood always got plenty of non-harmful fuel deposits from the never ending air traffic landing at O'Hare. Its good for your spleen...
I can only think the crew got rattled and didn't want to wait, but seems like they handled everything else really well. Odd.
I think they forgot they were dumping.
This was a very clickbaity title, TFC and RUclips has been cracking down on that. Furthermore, you're better than that, TFC. Great video as usual, but be better next time. As soon as I saw the date I knew something was off because, well, a plane flying out of LAX bursting into flames would've made worldwide news.
He didn't mention what specifically burst into flames in the title. The engine did burst into flames, not misleading at all.
What were the pilots thinking?? As they had regained control of the engine the 'emergency' was not critical enough to dump fuel at low altitude and over populated areas.
TFC your recreation of these aviation events are outstanding. Thanks!
It is very important to know what caused the engine failure and foremost, why the crew disregarded all rules for fuel dumping.
Hope the final investigation reports, findings and the action taken report will be published.
Still await the investigation report and findings of the PIA crash in Karachi and IA crash in Kochi.
PIA is pilot error, we already know, there's nothing to add in it
The Aircraft Aviation yes but while initial reports have been released including pilot error as a reason the final reports can take over a year to release for air accidents.
@@YEETMAN-dt9mb I totally understand you, but the main cause is certain, ya know what I'm talking about?
@@V1Fleetz That's the verdict but the black box, the voice recorder and the investigation will definitely reveal what transpired, the sequence of events that led to the conclusion that it was a pilot error.
The sequence of events question the ability of the pilot as in this case of fuel dumping in populated area.

Not heard that one?
10:10 beautiful sound that I listen when I am out of my house, from right to left
This is pretty interesting. As a aircraft propulsion engineer, I found this to be a pretty good description of what happened. I assume the fuel dump below FL 5000 was caused by 'fog of war' stress.
Below 5 million feet?
Disagree. Pilots pushed back on initial approach instructions, so they could have extra time, but were vague as why. I'd have thrown the book at them.
A couple of years ago, The Atlanta system was down and all inbound aircraft were diverted ,or retuned to their point of departure. I was in a car driving up to Seattle and noticed a boeing 717 on final into Tacoma dumping fuel . It was an alarming sight ,but after hearing about the Atlanta computer outage I wondered how many other aircraft were dumping over populated flight paths.
every time that engine blow happens my muscles tighten. i'm in that fight or flight mode...
Was there any disciplinary action for the crew that made this dangerous fuel dump over populated areas that injured many children?
Good question.
This is insane, my family has been living across the river from LaGuardia Airport in NYC for about 50 years, its aviation space at very low altitudes and we have neverrr experienced anything like this. Fuel dumping over land? Nuts
Insane situation. Read about it in the news when it happened and I expected some kind of explanation that the plane had reasons to dump like this because of serious trouble. However, nothing like this. Just complete inadequacy.
