I still find it all so impressive because this dlc runs off of rtx remix which is supposed to have no engine modification. it just intercepts what the game already makes and puts stuff on top of it
Yeah, I thought the same, but I noticed some small physical changes like the steps on elevators had been changed so you can walk over them smoother. Not sure if that means they changed other things. Was going to mention in the video but didn't make the cut
@@Chloedasher I thought the same, but I checked the stairs, they were 100℅ changed for portal rtx. In the original it is very easy to catch your feet on them, but I checked and its impossible to do that now
That's super interesting to see. I've played through the game with an RTX 2080TI and literally had no issues whatsoever. I even played around a bit with console commands to see if I could easily break anything, but it held up. I think the technology behind it fascinates me the most. This is all realtime, all the changes to the lighting and objects did not need an engine change or even a recompile of the game. RTX Remix just switches out everything on the fly. I'm eagier to see a mod team with more focus on keeping the faith and artstyle of the game work with these tools.
The behaviour of the elevator in chamber 9 is different. If you open the door with the cube, then place and go through a blue portal without going through the door, you'll be on the platform with the orange portal. Stand on the far corner, and try to shoot your blue portal through the door without falling off the platform. Go through the orange portal, and you'll see that the elevator isn't there. If you walk to the door, the elevator will then come down. This is all behaviour that is expected from portal normally, but if you jump across the gap where the elevator would be in the RTX version, the elevator also comes down. If you then run back to the door, the elevator will leave without you. I haven't retested this yet, but to my knowledge in normal portal, jumping across does nothing, and you can't get the elevator to leave without you.
Nice to get a look into this game and some of the wacky aspects of it, since my RTX GPU is apparently 1 generation too old to run this game. Good video.
@@loganm189 oh, that's the same GPU as me. I just couldn't get it running at all on my PC, I'd press play and nothing would happen, it just showed "stop" for like half a second then went back to play. Maybe I'll try again if it does work, I assumed it just didn't like my GPU.
I played on an RTX 3080 and it wasn't too bad but it seems like the game should run a lot better on it. I used Nvidia's recommended settings for the RTX 3070 Ti instead and found that it ran MUCH smoother on the 3080. I was surprised that the recommended settings say to set certain details lower than other cards below it, yet set DLSS to Quality mode. It's that quality mode that kills framerate. It's also obvious that they designed this around the RTX 4000 series and not so much older RTX cards.
The reason portal rtx is so weird is because portal rtx's visuals is based off the direct x version of portal So that's why the portals look weird and the walls are off and all that
RTX 3070, No visual bugs, with DLSS I had enough FPS to Play the Game. I dont know the Numbers probably around 40-80, at least it fealt like that. I played through the entire Story and it crashed like twice, I can fuck with that. I like the updated designs and the concept of RTX in Portal in particular is pretty cool! Idk what all the fuzz is about
yeah, im glad that portal RTX was made, people are being a bit harsh I think. in all honesty i leaned into the glitches a bit for a good title thumbnail, but everything I said in the vid are my thoughts. tried to be balanced
I would like to point out that a lot of modern games without ray tracing can look just as good in most cases as games that include it. Game devs have gotten so good at faking it that even now when it's possible to do it legitimately there isn't much point due to performance differences. Ray tracing is pretty neat especially for reflections but so far most examples I've seen of it have either looked identical to the normal game or are made way too extreme. I do like the idea for RTX remix though that's actually quite nice on games with slightly worse graphics, although I think NVIDIA should've started with something like the first Half-Life which desperately needs a makeover compared to Portal which already looks nice by itself.
On 3080 it crashes a lot because 120GB memory is not enough. I wasn't even able to change resolution without crash. On a 3090 it is not a problem, however, in 4K the game eats minimum 14GB VRAM
Great video! I agree with a lot of the things mentioned here, except I haven't had the item save glitch happen to me personally. I will say one thing with portal rtx you didn't mention though, and that is messing with the advanced settings (which is what I did at first since I have a 2060 super) turned off all the enhanced models and some textures. I'm aware you aren't supposed to mess with advanced settings, but it doesn't feel specified enough, and I never realized why my game looked different until Nvidia made an update on steam talking about how to increase performance. Over all great video, and rtx remix seems quite promising to me
If you don't have a good card/computer I wouldn't say it's worth it. Mine was playing under 30fps at times which made the momentum puzzles way harder to do as I could barely see where I needed to put the next portal fast enough. Portal is one of those games that looks fine without rtx so I'm confused why they picked portal instead of any other game
I played it with DLSS ultraperformance, the raytrace in my opinion was very impressive. I didn't bother with Quake II RTX because Quake II is a bad game. I can't wait for the modders to create the Half-Life 2 RTX REMIX and also the Half-Life 1 RTX REMIX.
