a major gripe i still have with portal rtx is how they "refreshed" the textures so they no longer look aged and unclean. from a lore standpoint that should remain because thats always been a signature part of portals look in both games.
So this video was literally done, days ago, but now people have recieved early copies of Portal RTX, completely spoiling any potential mystery there was left for the DLC and invalidating this entire video. I’m keeping it up, but god damn was some salt rubbed into the wound today with my PC now undergoing repairs.
Yea I now hate how some people will get an entire game day's week HELL even months before the release date

the thing they used to make portal rtx IS a tool to make mods and it will be open to the public either when portal rtx releases or next year, and then we will be able to mod it and any other game with dx8 and dx9 to our hearts content

@@n9ne even in Nvidia’s own “launch” stream for Portal RTX that they put on their own GeForce channel, the person hosting the video had no idea what RTX Remix was until they played a clip of the developers talking about how they used it. It’s really unfortunate that Nvidia have leaned so hard into using Portal as an example for using RTX Remix that they’ve inadvertently let Portal RTX overshadow the tool it’s supposed to be advertising.

@@n9ne it really is. people constantly complain about how it looks or something while being completely blinded to the fact that THIS is not what we're really looking at.
My main problem with it is so small and so simple but it would make it so much better that its infuriating, just a little bit of color correction to make the colors colder and more bluish and in the scape sequence make it a little bit warmer and orage. It's such a small change and so simple but I think it would help restore a lot of the original game
We definitely need a portal 2 version. Portal 2 already had beautiful atmosphere and these lighting and texture upgrades would make it feel 100x more real.

First he makes a video bashing the hell out of a free DLC / tech demo, which no one is forced to play btw.
And then makes a video saying thats his previous video managed to reach nvidia and got them to chnage the looks, without paying any respect to the fact that the old Trailer was an in-dev version and the developers probably would have done so either way.
Also, and I dont know where this came from, other people have said simmilar things, Portal RTX does NOT use DX8 OR DX9. I have run some checks and as it turns out the base game runs through OpenGL. Remix catches all OpenGL commands via the GL debug mode and generates Vulkan commands which are then passed onto the driver.
I know right he couldn't even own up to being wrong lol.

@@Mate_Antal_Zoltan I love the comparison! This video kind of reminds me of Under The Mayo's rants about Ultrakill and how it isent like doom eternal. It dosent need to be since it isent doom.
Same applies here, Portal RTX is not an accurate graphical reproduction of Portal 1, and it dosent need to be. After all its an artistic remake rather than the same game just with raytracing.
At the end of the day, if all you do is complain nobody will listen.
I'm really just worried that everyone playing Portal for the first time will choose to play this over the original game.
Lord knows tons of people already do that with Portal 2, completely ignoring the first game.
*edit:* Didn't realize you need normal Portal in order to play the RTX version, my fault. Still, people just discovering Portal outta play the original game, _then_ the RTX version.

@@bshap495 I understand if they prefer the RTX version. I'm talking about someone's first introduction to the Portal series. RTX is not the way to go, just like Black Mesa shouldn't really be played before Half-Life.

And it's not like someone will accidentally play the wrong version. You have to buy Portal 1 first, then download the RTX version separately.
It's funny how easily people lose the sight of why games like this are built like they are in the name of visual 'upgrades'; GLaD the ones working on the "remaster" we're willing to listen though, definitely a rare commodity these days..but a welcome one when present
I can never accept an argument if it boils down to "I don't like it because it looks more like Portal 2", Portal 2 is objectively an upgrade of the 1st, idc what anyone says.

Yes in the most simple sense, but the atmosphere between both games changed dramatically from being creepy to more “friendly”.
It’s up to the person to decide if they prefer either look, but if the job is to make the first portal look better without significant change, then nailing the creepy atmosphere is very important.
Portal 1 looked like dogs*it if it weren't for the clinical look, most outdated Source game in the graphics side ever.

I recently got a RTX card and I'm not a hater of Portal RTX. Its honestly a really nice visual change for those who've got hours upon hours on the original Portal. Its a fun and welcome addition

Dude it's not built on Direct X 8 source. I had an error when first booting it up due to my driver not being updated, and it let me see the version of Direct X Portal was being booted into, Direct X 9. Well, technically Direct3D 9, but they're practically the same thing

I am worried about there is no gpu to handle portal 2 rtx. So they have made portal 1 instead imo. It is still good to see a ‘new’ look to a portal game after years of waiting.

Portal 2 rtx wouldn't be any harder to run. Thats not how an rt upgrade works.
Portal 1 is shorter. Thats the reason they did this one.

As unfortunate as it may be, I really doubt that your video did anything. Gamedev is an iterative process. The stuff they showed off before the release was just... stuff from before the release. Not quite finished, but it was at a point where they could show it off and make a trailer.

turns out it's actually on DX7 mode, it needs that to reconstructing a scene
because DX8 uses a fixed function pipeline, which is what enables this whole mess to work in the first place. it's not black magic -- any game that uses a programmable shader pipeline introduced in DX9, will just not work with RTX remix

There were some people who were able to play the game yesterday and I saw a video of one of those people playing it. And I got to say that they sort of ruined GlaDOS's lair because it looks a lot more open now. They also ruined the ending because of the lack of directional lighting.

I'm personally not at all interested in Portal RTX because I would need to buy a Graphics Card more expensive than my computer itself in order to play it. I'll probably watch a playthrough though.

I prefer the original RTX look better than the one we got now, because this is made to showcase RTX in our favorite games, I don't care that It doesn't follow the lore/artstyle, It is pretty much a tech demo, you will be able to mod it once the mod tool is available, so you can make "true" Portal RTX, that follows the artstyle and lore.

Saved? Why do you affirm it has been saved? You still need a fucking 3080 to run it decently... Raytracing is the best marketing brand NVIDIA implemented to make people think that they need the best of the best if they want their games to look better, whereas the games were looking alright enough already.
I've seen games with static raytracing treatment that puts this "need of real-time raytracing" into the thinking corner.
Well yeah. real time ray tracing is hard to run.

Rtx on trailers looked much more complex and epic. when I played, I scrolled through entire settings, rtx settings, and even advanced settings, but there is no option to bring back that style from trailers. The portal RTX that we got is too bright and too less "RTX". It feels like not much changed.
For a free tech demo I feel like the amount of scrutiny it is getting for not adhering to the art style is just pointless, so few people are actually going to be able to play this as it requires rt compatible cards with actual power it's not like somebody is accidently gonna play portal rtx first and have a bad experience it's a completely free tech demo to show off technology that's literally the whole point.
This is such a hugely missed opportunity. Valve should have implemented this into the engine code so everything would be working as intended. Right now, there are absolutely no light warping effects. So the portals look shite and are missing the warping effect aswell. And there is no hot air warping particle effects from the incinerators and the fire death trap part aswell.
This is such a hurting missed oportunity. It's like you have one arrow to make a bang in the world and you hit the target in the leg instead of the chest. There isn't going to be another portal remake with raytracing any time soon up until valve releases their next engine with modding capability and ray tracing support so modders could port Portal to that.
But knowing how Valve is, this will probably not happen for the upcoming 10 years (yes this is how long you'll probably have to wait until valve programs in ray tracing into their Source 2/ Source 3 engine Lmao). If they'll even release their next engine for modding, that is... lol....
this is the work of NVIDIA, and it's meant to showcase their dumb little RTX remix tool, which only works on DX8 and 9 games with fixed function pipelines

in the future ppl are interested in renewable technology that reduces the logistic pipeline , such as carbon fiber and synthetics
the materials are lighter , more durable and easier to maintain and replace etc.
so when you say ' local resources ' youre talking about niche industries that become more niche over time ,
whereas previously we were assuming that precious metals and such would become more critical as industrial technologies and electronics etc. continued to expand
its likely within a few decades or 200 years or so they wont be used at all for mechanical process .
ppl hate mining and refining because of the pollution , energy overhead and so on
meanwhile recycling methods for major industries such as steel are becoming more efficient
and the new material that is produce is more recyclable than previous iteration
