I honestly think making jokes of traumatic events is a coping mechanism. Yes, the events have been quite horrific, but sometimes people need humor in order to cope and process it.

I'm a New Yorker, but I moved to another state well before 9/11.
I went back to visit family a couple of months post 9/11.
My suv was full of relatives, and we were on our way to meet with others for a night out.
We passed by a home with a huge DIY memorial to 9/11 it even included large models of the twin towers.
The first words out of my mouth?
HEY! WHERE ARE THE AIRPLANES!?
That did not go over well. But I still continued with...
NOT REALISTIC AT ALL!
