I made it to the end. Haha thanks so much for making this video... I am a 36 year old married father of 4 who quit my corporate management position to follow my dreams of being a digital nomad. I have been in "tutorial hell" for the last 8 months and decided to make a huge change with how I am approaching it. I invested in a state of the art home office setup and not even my wife knows how much that rabbit hole cost us haha but, I plan to start "fresh" and document my complete learning journey via live streams to sort of have a video journal of where I was and what I was doing at certain times. I want to be able to respond to chat and use them as a learning partner if it ends up working out that way. I do NOT care about monetization or anything for my channel or anything but I will make my streams as professional looking and real as possible, just because that is the type of person that I am. While I have been collecting tech to setup a good streaming ability and preparing my content list, you have been a huge inspiration to me. I have watched hundreds of hours of RUclips content over the last 8 months and for some reason your authenticity has resonated with me and I truly believe the words you are speaking. @dennismamrenko1663 2 года назад +6

@@Twistedstar0320 if you have really zero experience with programming then I would recommend that you choose a general project, whether that be a small console application (which could be in Python or Java or C#, I would go with a python application because it's easiest to learn the basics of programming with it) or if you wanted to make a small web page, (you will learn HTML, CSS, and some JavaScript). Whatever you want to work on will determine what technology you will use.
Everyone likes to ask "where do I start?" But the real secret is to just start some sort of project, anything that peaks your interest. There's just about nothing you can't learn from RUclips, And when you run your application most of your errors will be in the top search results on Google.
From my personal opinion I would suggest that you get some programming experience in Python to do simple things quickly, But then progress to object-oriented languages like Java and c# to be able to build web applications, but to study up on really basic web development before you jump into those kinds of projects.
Don't waste time with GUIs, they're out of date imo.

Chris! Thank you so much for breaking this down! As someone whos been flirting with code and development for the last couple of years this really helps. It's a sea of confusion, knowing what to learn and how. It's also really easy to get trapped in tutorial hell and to constantly switch languages bc someone told you "Ruby is dead" or something like that. I'm the type of person that likes a clear roadmap, and you just gave me one! Thanks, man!

Hi, Chris. I love this pragmatic approach because it combines tutorials and courses with actual work (real projects, interviews.) This is something that traditional education does not do, which gets us used to focusing on guided learning for too long, sometimes waiting for months or years to practice in the real world.

Made it to the end 😜 I’ve had a LOT happen in my life the past two years. I’ve practically got whiplash from all the changes of direction after 9 years at a job as a barista where I hit the ceiling living paycheck to paycheck. I haven’t had a vacation in 4+ years, can’t afford to save more than a couple grand, and decided I’m done trying to find quick shortcuts to make a *little bit more*. I’m diving straight in, starting with the self-taught route, doing Harvard’s CS50x course, bookmarking a ton of other resources, determined to learn with a coding bootcamp on standby in case this (self-teaching) doesn’t work out for me. I appreciate your videos SOOO much, you’re a real person who figured something out, and I love that you’re willing to share that experience. Best to you!

I've learned HTML and CSS within the first week after 5+ hours a day of studying it. I also made a project of a heavily designed page on my second week. So yes, it's completely doable. The experience I've gained from making projects helped a bunch. I did feel like I was burning out after spending 5+ hours a day which is normal. I then switched to taking a break every time I felt like I was overworking. BTW I'm a student at high school so I may have more free time than most but I still try my best.

Just remember to distract yourself and focus on positives. Praise yourself for your achievements and only judge yourself by what you know you are capable of. Nobody else can tell us that we should have achieved this or earnt enough to buy that. Happiness comes when we let go of the focus that makes us dissatisfied and construct new objectives for our lives.

Then go back to the course and see if what is been teach make sense. if does you understand it if don't you need to study more in that specific subject.

I made it through the end, ty man for every piece of advice. The fact that you said "No regrets" makes me feel that this is completely worth it. Thank you again man.

No need to watch the time. Your videos is good. The quality is awesome. Today makes the beginning of my second week learning to code . I’ll say my second week from my first month. I’m off to your podcast right now. I wish this video were longer. Love yah

Hey Chris, Great video. I know you are a Front End developer but it would be really interesting if you could do a video in the same format as this with a month by month guide for someone looking to become either a Back end developer or a Full Stack developer. I've not come across a month by month guide like this and think a similar format for other forms of web development would be awesome (maybe you could reach out to some of your back end developer friends for advise). either way i loved the video. Thanks

I wish I am the same age as you, and start coding at that age, of course, I had a bad situation at that time, I lost my father and didn't know what to do! Keep going:)

I made it to the end! I just found your channel today and have been watching different videos on careers in tech and see which ones I'm interested in. This has been what I needed to hear, especially going with a career change since I have been laid-off. Thank you for sharing your journey and your help to the community.
