I have a cast on mine that lasts 6 weeks, then I go into a boot. A knee scooter and a backpack helped me a lot. Im week 5 as well from ankle arthodesis, and the mornings are the worst.

Thank you for the info. I am about to have a similar surgery. Your frustration I feel 100%. I smashed my ankle 8 weeks ago and do to it being an open fracture I will have several surgeries prior to fusion.
    ! BeSt wishes on a steady recovery😊

Sorry to hear about your ankle injury. Good luck with your recovery, be patient and kind to yourself. Our bodies have an incredible capacity to heal.

Why did you decide on the ankle fusion? Was it because of pain or the type of injury?

      Hi, thanks for your comment.
The cartilage in my ankle joint was damaged in a car accident 20+ years ago. I have had 6 arthroscopies over the years to smooth the bone spurs. I always knew that the condition would worsen eventually, and when this happened, I had three options:
      1. Do nothing - but that wasn’t really an option. The pain and reduced mobility made even short runs or long walks a struggle, resulting in acute pain for days, sometimes weeks in the end.
      2. Ankle replacement - but the consultant advised against it due to my age and activity level.
      3. Ankle fusion - which would mean losing some mobility in the joint but should allow me to walk pain-free.
Running is off the table, but I’m finally able to enjoy the other physical activities I love-and that means everything to me.

@anklefusiongirl i had a compound fracture left ankle, weber C frach left ankle spiral fibula sindesmoses tear and medial ligament rupl distal tibia pretuding and the fibula and tibia were fastened with 2 tightropes. I'm taking painkillers twice a day along with anti inflammatory meds just to walk. I know if I'm busy today doing something at home or in the garage walking or kneeling a lot, tomorrow I would be in pain even taking extra pain killers and woth nothing as I would be sitting with the leg elevated. I want to know when you had the fusion if the pain dissappeared or not? Some days the pain is so severe I would feel the urge of amputation just to get rid of the pain. But with amputation there are other factors present that I don't know of.

I totally feel your pain-I had a really tough 2024. I had my fusion in January, and the recovery was long. The metalwork gave me some issues, but once it was removed, things got much better. Now, my recovery has been pretty smooth, and I’m walking without pain most days!
