This game was such a pain to navigate. I loved the graphics and atmosphere and it was the 1st N64 game I played. Seeing you speed run this game is mind boggling.
Watching these speedruns really makes me want to see/know how AI would compare if/when someone can program AI to do speedruns. The level of strategy, analysis, foreknowledge of the exact placement, movement and pathing of the NPC's, how to glitch through certain areas, etc., just makes me think that there is absolutely no way AI can surpass our best speedrunners. At least we'll have that to hang our hats on when they inevitably take us over and enslave us, LOL! XD
I love this guys use of the checkpoint system. like at 14:36 he fell into the pit so he could go to the checkpoint outside because it was quicker to just die than to walk all the way out.
The massively increased draw distance is a huge help here with navigation. The original N64 game looked like Silent Hill, there was so much fog, it was my main issue with the game/engine but it was still great. This was one of the most fun to watch speed runs i've seen, and lol at 0:10 with the slice and scream. Caught me off guard.
I was playing this remake casually the other day having a really great time and I thought: This would make an awesome speed game... And yep. It does. Great run!
I just rewatched it. Not surprised at all he turned on the map, and who could blame him lol but yeah when I watched the whole playthrough, that was probably a top 3 wow moment for me
Took a long time for me to finally see a speedrun of this game. Seeing as this was played on an older patch, it makes me wonder which of the tricks and glitches shown in the video are still possible to be executed on the current patch. You really made me want to mess around with the game a little and find out.
WHen I rented this as a kid, I was shocked at how large the levels were! Then the frustration of getting lost, dying constantly, the super unfair enemies that just waste you in seconds, I love the game but I cannot stress just how HARD this fucking game was! I never beat it without cheats. Then turok 2 came out and you could blow enemies arms off and shoot holes through them! That was revolutionary back then.
In level 5 the catacombs at the part during 10:53 if you time it just right you can kind of "zip line" down off from the ceiling by jumping and holding jump. Not sure if you knew or not. Its kind of tricky sometimes but its able to work. Have to jump and hold it as soon as you start down the stairs while pressing forward.
I am pretty sure that only works in the Nintendo 64 version as I used to do that all the time with that and also the ending hallway before you face The Campaigner. On the PC version I have not been able to do it. Maybe I'm wrong but I've tried heaps.
Also the jump at 4:09 its like you need to hit 100% perfect a right spot. I tried it a lots, and can only make the jump once out of about 20 tries. I dont know how anybody can do it every time.
That one is a little tricky, what I do is I stop all momentum before the first jump, then jump from a standing position holding W+D, then as Turok starts falling as I touch the wall, I once again press W+D+Jump at the same time.
@@KaseiSpeedruns Thanks for info. I also like to find some glitches in the game. Like a climbing wall at level 2 (The wall up to the piece of chronospectre), it was possible to slide all way up. In first level it is possible to get the pistol from the bridge :)
Hey if you want a faster speed run at 10:54 if you jump and hold the jump button you can just glide down thise stairs. Im actually surprised some people dont know this. Use to do it on the N64 all the time. Should work for most long decents in the game. Hope it helps with the time my dude!
This game was a big part of my childhood. I had a PlayStation and my neighbor had N64 so I would go over to play turok and other N64 games and he would come over to my house to play PlayStation !!
0:25 is this a different version of Turok 1? Every console/emulator I've ever played all had the same layout which is drastically different from what yours is showing
It's the remastered version released by Night Dive Studios for Steam. It alters the level design slightly in a few levels, namely the first, fourth and sixth.
So I'm not fucking crazy. That auto shotgun secret climbable wall in level 1 right near the beginning is totally removed in the remaster!!! I looked for it for at least an hour then started thinking I was fuckin nuts or something!!!
That would be a clip! Running towards that tunnel using that angle will zip you down into the tunnel below. I believe it happens because of the ladder placed there, but I genuinely don't really know why it happens. Do people still run the PC version that came out in the 90s or has that been totally obsoleted by the versions that got remastered and eventually put on Xbox and Switch?
So is wrong-warping a thing in this game? I went into a blue portal on Level 2 (The Jungle) and the exit portal within took me straight to the Campaigner fight. I did this just last night on my original N64 copy of the game (not a remaster, emulation, etc.) and at first I thought the game had frozen upon entering the portal because it did a weird visual tear and stopped refreshing for a couple seconds. After those couple of seconds, all the visuals disappeared for not even a full second, then it faded back in to load the portal stage as usual. I proceeded through the portal stage, reached the exit portal, and when I went through I was at the Campaigner instead of my original position in Level 2. Has this ever happened to you or anyone else reading this? I wonder if some memory glitch happened and I'm really curious to see if it can be replicated. It seems totally plausible that if proper RNG manipulation could be used (even unknowingly) then the portals that pop up randomly could teleport you to different places than originally intended, but this is the first time this has ever happened to me so I'm very curious to see if it's already known and/or viable for speedrunning. I think it fixed a bunch of bugs like this I remember, when I was a kid I used the fly cheat and flew straight up on the jeep boss fight and it took me straight to the end boss
Yes for me when I was on the main menu and if you waited for like a minute, it would show a gameplay of different levels, I would wiggle the cartridge just lightly until the game froze, then I would turn off and on the N64 rapidly and it would instantly take me to the level of the gameplay preview and have all the weapons
Wait, you could kill the hunter before the Humvee's? I shot him many times with the Chronoscepter and he never died ... always had to destroy the Humvee's first.
I tried to shot a lots on the first boss before i kill the cars, and it was not possible, because he had some kind of shield that make him invulnerable.
That's a trick exclusive to the Remaster, we call it load warping. Essentially, as you enter a portal that transitions you to another level, you can pause mid-animation and load another game. If you do this, the game will load the save file you select, but will prioritize placing the player wherever the portal is taking him. We set up a save by the Mantis so we can use this later once we have the Fusion Cannon. This might be confusing, but see it as a way of fast travelling from points we set up ourselves. We load and older save to get to where we want to be on our current save, then enter a portal, pause the game before we load into the next level and load the save we want to be in that location - in the example above, the Mantis' boss room with better weapons.
@@ringofasho7721 Its not only strafe with like A+W. There may be something more, i havent figure out. I play this game a lots, and also upload crazy videos about it. But i never moved so fast. Like it look like fish eye fx. Maybe the video is speed up a bit, so it looks faster.
Hey! Are you referring to the general movement speed? Turok, like other retro shooters has movement coded a little funky. We run diagonally through the run, meaning two movement inputs is being made. The game doesn't exactly cap the speed of my movement at all, so holding two inputs just adds more speed on top of eachother.
Longhunter has a shield that protects him from everything but explosives when a car is active, meaning we can use Explosive Shells and Tek Arrows to kill him before killing the cars! You know he's dead when his model freezes in place. Then, we die to the car because the game doesn't check for Longhunter's specific death cutscene to spawn in the key. It simply checks for any cutscene to play when he's dead - so we abuse that fact by dying and triggering the respawn cutscene. This fight is super luck heavy, as you have to rely on the car dealing enough damage to kill you quickly, while also not killing you instantly.
@@Fallconn2 For 12:47, that's a trick called Load Warping. Whenever you enter a portal that would transition over to another map, you can pause the game. If you load a save during this time, the game will load the save you choose (giving you the same inventory as that save) but put you wherever the portal is taking you because the new location loads faster than loading the save. Think of it as a way to warp around to different saves. We save at Mantis because we want to kill her later in the run using Fusion Cannon. So to do this, we make a save there, then when we have the Fusion Cannon on a different save, we: 1. Load the Mantis save 2. Enter the Mantis boss portal 3. Press pause as it loads, then load the save that has Fusion Cannon We now enter Mantis boss room on a save that is much farther ahead in the game with more keys and weapons, making that fight trivial.
Hey! For Longhunter, it seems his hitbox is only vulnerable to explosive shots, such as explosive shells, tek arrows and grenades when the cars are still alive. You can shoot him tons with those and when his model freezes its animations, that's when you know he's dead. This queues up the cutscene where the key becomes available. Since you trigger a cutscene when you die, both of those cutscenes will play in sequence thus giving you access to the key without ever harming the cars. As for the oneshots you see, they are performed by using a hidden mechanic that involves pulling a normal arrow (not tek arrow!) for a short time (like 1 second) before firing it. This will cause it to instantly kill any non-mechanical and boss enemy in one hit. If you want to test it yourself, stand completely still and pull an arrow. You'll see a little glow on the tip of the arrow, that's your moment to fire.
This was a trick that only worked in patches prior to 1.4.6. You don't get the functionality of two weapons out at once, but it skips the animation that occurs when swapping from one weapon to another. To trigger it in previous patches, you had to start firing one weapon and on the first shot, press the hotkey for whatever weapon you're swapping to. After 9 shots, this glitch would trigger.

Beat Hexen when I was 10, those were the good ol days. Took me forever! The game is very confusing if you don;t understand what is going on.@@IMN602
