  • These days, I feel like you can't go a couple of weeks without the release of a new installment in a franchise. It's just the way things work these days, at least in Hollywood. The world wants sequels. They want franchises... they want to be able to come back to the same characters and again and again and see how their lives have changed. ANd lot's of studios do it... but few are quite so consistent, and able to churn out sequels that at worst, maintain the quality of the original. And at best surpass it completely. And so today, that's what I want to do... talk through why I think that Dreamworks Animated Studios, is the King of Sequels.

    When I think of Disney in films, I think of isolated stories, while for Dreamworks, I think of franchises. Shrek has 3-4 movies, 2 spinoff movies, and a load of games, including guest cameos. Madagascar has 3 main movies, a spinoff movie, two spinoff shows, Merry Madagascar, a MMO, a Kart Racer with Shrek snuck in, and even the On Ice event. How to Train Your Dragon, 3 movies, 3 spinoff shows, and a MMO.
    While Megamind being standalone is neat, what Dreamworks does unlike Illumination or Disney is keep working with what it establishes and progresses it. Even when it messes up, it still tries to continue, in case something works with enough practice.

      Disney Animation is a great studio when it comes to making original self contained stories but not so great when it comes to sequels. Pixar and DreamWorks on the other hand, their sequels are almost always on the money. They understand the importance of expanding the worlds of their movies into uncharted territories and most of the time, it pays off beautifully. Disney Animation has yet to make a worthy follow up to another one of their movies. But until that happens, Pixar and DreamWorks reign supreme as the Kings of Sequels.

    • @amesstarline5482

      @@williehampton3855 I'd actually put Dreamworks above Pixar in this aspect as well. Monsters U is good, as is Toy Story 4, but Dreamworks' library is defined by how they rarely "abandon" a film, giving a sequel or spinoff to help it grow.
      MegaMind is an exception like El Dorado and Bee Movie that lives on through memes, and even they ended up with games.
      Home, Peabody+Sherman, Croods (until its own sequel), and Captain Underpants all got their own spinoff shows. The King Julien double-spinoff-prequel seems inspired by his success in each of the films a n d both Penguins spinoffs.
      Pixar has much more standalones like Bugs Life, Inside Out, and Turning Red.

      @@amesstarline5482 I don't mind Illumination, but yeah, there's a reason why Dreamworks is the anti-Disney. If you look at Disney's lineup of sequels (not counting Pixar), the only exceptions that I can think of are the Aladdin Sequels and TV Show, Kronk's New Grove, and The Lion King 1 1/2. The reason the Disney Sequels fail was that they refuse to let the characters be developed beyond the original story. No proper lessons learned, no previous arcs re-addressed. Disney made sequels just to make money, and after hearing about the negativity drawn from the Mulan Demake, I'm no longer supporting Disney... too bad there are people in my life that won't give that up, but I'm not going to name names.

    • @williehampton3855
      @williehampton3855 Год назад +1

      @@robbiewalker2831 Despite that, I still think Disney Animation may learn their lesson and actually make an interesting sequel one day. Zootopia, for example, is a film that deserves to be expanded upon. What if the sequel delve deeper into it's world and explored other regions populated by other species of animals outside of Zootopia, like birds, reptiles, amphibians, sea creatures or even insects? Or a third Wreck-It Ralph, where it continues on the theme of gaming and shows what happens if outdated arcade games are pushed to the way side in favor of next generation console gaming? That'd be perfect since it would come out in a time where the PlayStation 5 is still relevant.

      @@williehampton3855 Disney does have a few good ongoing franchises like Winnie the Pooh and the Mickey Mouse universe, but they tend to try too hard to make profit off ones that had their run but were super popular.. Ironically they never made sequels for Sword in the Stone or Basil the Great Mouse Detective, despite being PERFECT for more installments.

Especially Bunny! Why that Bunny- I mean rabbits are everywhere so what made him stand out so much from other rabbits? Even the backstory of “Man in Moon” would be so interesting! They also could add other folk lore characters because I feel a “Mother Nature” would be all around gorgeous in these storylines. It’s a such a shame it’s considered a flop :/

    To be honest, I actually thought Trolls World Tour was better than the original. It had better world building, the textures of the animated sets looked very fun, had better original songs, was really clever in creating a story and world about personified music genres, and most of all had a great and fun villain. While on the surface level, labeling rock as the villain seems somewhat hurtful to the genre, the way it was overall executed worked well.
    And while the film had it’s annoying things like James Corden, Tiny Diamond, and some of the annoying pop songs, in a way I can mostly overlook them and understand it, because the film itself feels somewhat meta, and acknowledges the fact that pop as a genre and the pop trolls can be pretty annoying at times, and because of that, in a way it makes fun of itself since the main characters are the pop trolls, which works well in this case. The most annoying characters in this movie come from the pop trolls, and while they’re still annoying and that can be a little hard to sit through, in a way it works with the purpose of those characters. However this is just my take on Trolls World Tour, but I can definitely say I enjoyed it more than the first.

    Most of the time Dreamworks sequels are great, at least the 2nd installments in the franchises. Madagascar 2 and Shrek 2 are both better than the original imo, Kung Fu Panda 2 and Croods 2 are just as amazing as their first movies and How To Train Your Dragon 2 is not quite as good but still a worthy sequel that adds to the established world. It's mostly with the third movies they always seem to lose their focus, KFP3, HTTYD3, Shrek 3, etc are all the worst parts of their respective franchises. They don't go as far as ruining everything but they also don't continue it properly and I've never felt the need to rewatch any of them while I frequently love to go back to the first two movies.

    I keep forgetting that "Boss Baby 2" exists. It was just such a movie that came and went. I even forget that "Trolls 2" happened, but DreamWorks' attempt at selling the merchandise keeps reminding of it. "Croods 2" had it's bizarrely entertaining moments, and I sort of liked it. Mostly because it took my mind off of 2020 events, which was a bonus.

  • @matityaloran9157
    @matityaloran9157 Год назад +6

    Well. I think that The Prince of Egypt was far better than its direct to video prequel Joseph:King of Dreams even though Joseph: King of Dreams was good. Though I know its financial failure led to them discontinuing a plan for a direct to video sequel to Antz which was probably for the best since I don’t see how that story could have been continued.
    While Shrek 2 did a great job as a sequel to Shrek and Shrek 3 did a great job as a sequel to Shrek 2 and even Shrek 4 did a good job as a sequel to Shrek 3.
    While Kung Fu Panda was an excellent film. I’m not sure I would go as far as saying Kung Fu Panda 2 was better since it lacked the Shifu dynamic from the first movie and I’m not a fan of deliberately incorporating an aspect of the story that necessitates a sequel though I would still consider Kung Fu Panda 2 a worthy sequel to Kung Fu Panda. And I like how Kung Fu Panda 3 links back to Oogway and thinks that it does a good job ending the trilogy.
    While Madagascar was quite funny if overly episodic and it well-handled the character development of Alex the Lion. And I concede that the sequel is superior given it has more of the penguins in it, does a good job delving into Alex’s backstory and further explores the other characters like Marty and Melman and Gloria rather than simply Alex and does a great job building on the humour of the first movie. And Madagascar 3 did a fairly good job as a sequel to Madagascar 2 though Madagascar 2 was better. While The Penguins of Madagascar did a good job connecting the movies to the Nickelodeon show.
    And once I got past how radically different it was from the book upon which it was based How To Train Your Dragon was quite good. And its sequel How To Train Your Dragon 2 was even better. And I loved how How To Train Your Dragon 3 actually brings us back to the books from which the movies were adapted. Though I didn’t actually see the sequels to The Croods or to Trolls to comment. And I saw neither of the Boss Baby movies.

    3:45, not really. The third one builds upon what was deliberately set up by the previous two films whereas the fourth essentially rehashes the first movie (though it admittedly does a good job doing that.) In the first Shrek movie, Lord Farquaad was trying to marry Princess Fiona to become king which would imply that Shrek marrying Fiona would lead to him becoming King which is something that only Shrek 3 addresses. And it’s not the only one, since Shrek 2 explicitly discussed the possibility of Shrek and Fiona having children and went nowhere with it whereas Shrek 3 actually built upon that. And Prince Charming was mentioned by name in the first movie and was a major secondary antagonist in the second and given his characterization isn’t the kind of person who would take Fairy Godmother’s death from Shrek 2 lying down. He’d want revenge which he actually seeks out in Shrek 3. Not to mention that Shrek 3 shows how far Harold has developed since the previous film. Shrek 3 was good

    I have a hot take (ooh god.... protect me from all the hate): the Shrek franchise is good but are not as good as people says it is. I don't find anything outstanding in those movies. it's like the harry potter franchise, all are good but none are masterpieces. And I also think Shrek the third was the better one (hated the fourth one).
    2. When it comes to Madagascar, I think the first one was fairly decent. Madagascar escape 2 Africa was much better than the first one. the penguins are just golden in that movie. penguins have always been my favourite thing about Madagascar movies. the third one was mehh..
    3. kungfu panda (1&2) is by far my favourite DreamWorks movies. Both the first ones are god tier, just masterpieces. However, the third one was a huge step back. the music and animation was still incredible, but the villain didn't have a proper origin, the comedy was too forced and scripted, and it just forgets that the second movie happened. po is less mature now and what happened to his character development from the second movie? I can rant on and on about how the 3rd was disappointing.
    4. Aahh, now we have the perfect trilogy. As a trilogy, httyd is just perfect. Perfect, down to the last minute detail. The character development is consistent and doesn't include any lousy writing. If we look at the the movies in isolation, the first one is the best. It is just a masterpiece. the music is god tier, the animation is god tier, the writing is god tier, the character designs and developments are god tier, just about everything about that movie is god tier. personally, it is my 3rd favourite animated movie of all time (after kfp 1&2 ofcourse). the second and third movies were good too. not god tier, but still good.
    sequels or not sequels, DreamWorks is the best animation studio out there.
    edit: I have one more take. I dont think the scores you mentioned means shit. they are far off from reality.

    Personally I think Shrek forever after is worse then Shrek the third Shrek the third is so over hated it’s not amazing but I would say it was a average movie it had some good moments in it I thought Shrek forever after was awful

    In my honest opinion Shrek forever after is better than Shrek 2.
