  • Dreamworks has had plenty of sequels that work compared to what Disney has done, and I wanted to explore the elements that make them work.

DreamWorks is the kind of studio to make sequels feel like movies rather than cash grabs. Yes, not all of their sequels do it, but majority: Shrek 2, Madagascar 2 and 3, PIB the last wish, King Fu panda 2 an and 3, the How to train your dragon sequels, etc. This is definitely something DreamWorks should be known for. The studio for making great sequels. I’ll never manage to fully know how they manage to do it, but gosh dang it, they can do it greatly!

I think one of the reasons why Pixar sequels are so bad is because they just switch the characters.

    - What if Elastigirl went off to fight crime while Mr. Incredible is with kids?

What’s wrong with Dory becoming the main lead character? Plus, there’s been sequels where another character from the original becomes the main lead before Pixar was doing it with the sequels you’ve mentioned and even Monsters University.

    • @raincloud96
      @raincloud96 11 месяцев назад +28

I don't think there's a problem with the switching of the main character, it's mainly down to the fact that they retell the same story as in the first film. For Finding Dory, the main character gets lost and has to be found while she's on a journey to find her family, but if you look at Finding Nemo - the main character has to find their lost family while technically getting lost himself - it's the same story told with the same characters but in different roles. The same can be said for The Incredibles 2 - one parent from a super family goes to fight crime while the other stays at home with the children. There isn't anything wrong with switching the characters - it can be fun and work really well like in Monsters University! (at least in my opinion) - the issue is that they tell the exact same story with those characters :) @@hunterolaughlin

I admit Pixar sequels that aren’t Toy Story feel kinda made for money, but none of them are bad (except Cars 2)
Also the sequels that are Toy Story are excellent. I’d argue that Toy Story 2 is better than any Dreamwork’s sequel (even Shrek 2)

DreamWorks being such a mixed bag of a studio is honestly what I love about them and why they're my favorite American animated studio 😂😂 I love how you never know what to expect from them!! Not only that, but because of their mixed reputation, you never get super disappointed if their next movie isn't as great as the last. Compared to Disney and Pixar who have made too many 10/10s that when they aren't and make anything less (even if that less is a 9/10), you're so disappointed to the point you belive they have lost their touch and will never get back on their feet. Which isn't fair honestly. But atleast DW doesn't really go through that lololol

I’m my opinion I’d say HTTYD is the best film series in dreamworks. I mean the films are graphically insane but dreamworks also made many different tv series that gave massive world building to understand how the dragons and Vikings live. But it also builds relationships with the characters for those growing up with it. I grew up watching all the shows of riders, defenders, and race to the edge. Then the films are so emotional and good that when Toothless and Hiccup split I was in full tears and I am every time I see that scene. HTTYD 3 is literally the only film I cry over.

I feel like it's the most grounded animated series, the characters and story's feel more real then most other (animated or not) and Hiccup's coming of age story is so perfectelly executed it's my favourite out there, I relate to him more then to any fictional character. I also feel like they'e more art then any other Dreamworks/Disney/Pixar property in the sense that everything from animation, music, editing, cinematography just comes together beautifully, it all fits so well. HTTYD 1 started probably the biggest franchise of any animated movie with tv-shows, comics, short, what-have-you-not.

I believe that Disney and Pixar usually suck at sequels, because they won't deviate from their formulas. Pixar made a lot of films using a recipé "what if *blank* had emotions" and Disney never really tried doing sequels before Toy Story 2 came along. Both Pixar and Disney don't know how to improve upon that recipé that made the originals great.
Dreamworks on the other hands is more experimental. They try many different themes, styles and stories, which is why they produce some amazing bangers of franchises, that are very distinct from one another, while that also being the reason why some of their movies are of poor quality.

@@thegiftedfire3470But doesn’t Finding Dory expand the universe of Finding Nemo? I mean in that film, we go outside of Australia to California and where the first film explored the life and perspective of fish living in a fish tank in a dentist’s office, the sequel expands to show the perspective of fish in a marine life institute setting and featuring more sea creatures like seals, different whale species like whale sharks and beluga whales, East Pacific Red Octopuses, or septopus, otters and even birds loons and expanding Dory’s backstory and her character with her love and determination to find her parents. How did they go from Masterpieces like The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots the Last Wish to the let down of Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken? I heard a rumor that Christopher Nolan made a requirement with NBCUniversal, the studio that owns DreamWorks, that if they release Oppenheimer, they have to make sure that they don’t release anything else in between for too long, so Ruby Gilman was flushed out after being in Development hell for so long, and then take an off so that Oppenheimer would win. It’s just a theory. And the original idea had gone through so many retcons and changes in the past seven years that I doubt DreamWorks expected to succeed.

Disney direct-to-video sequels were obvious cash grabs, 3 episodes of failed shows and writers just having fun with stories that are not really considered canon. Dreamworks has only one direct-to-video sequel, Joseph the King of Dreams, which is obviously downgraded because of the budget but still in my opinion is head and shoulders above Disney's.
Dreamworks sequels have more story to tell which expands the characters and their world. With Disney, they feel more like cash grabs. There is no more story and if there is the executives will push to release it before it's ready.
Sure Dreamworks has its bad sequels like Shrek the Third and franchises that are just fun for families like Trolls and Boss Baby but for the most part they try to keep them separately. With Disney, the gap in quality is like night and day.

I had no idea Chelsea was gonna turn out to be the queen of the mermaids until I saw the movie in theaters. I thought she was going to have a mother who's the queen of the mermaids. But that didn't turn out to be the case. That was a plot twist, and they didn't spoil that in the trailers. This beautiful movie is underrated and misunderstood.

One thing I like about some Dreamworks sequels is that, while you can watch the movies before, you dont necessarily need to watch them to understand the sequels. The most notable example being Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Sure, you can watch Puss in Boots to understand his origin story, but it isn't required to understand and enjoy The Last Wish. In fact, I can say that this is one of the rare cases of animated movie sequels that are better than the previous movie(s).
Heck, for the most part, even the weaker Dreamworks sequels are to the standards of the previous movies within the line. For example: I personally think Kung Fu Panda 3 is the weakest of the trilogy, but do I think it's a bad movie? No, it's still a really good movie. I can only think of one Dreamworks sequel I could consider medicore to slightly bad, that being Shrek the Third, though it's not unbearable to watch.
Meanwhile with Disney, the only sequels I liked more than the original are Peter Pan: Return to Neverland and Cinderella 3: A Twist in Time. Lion King 2: Simba's Pride is another Disney sequel I like, but not as much as the original.

Can you please make a another positive review for a Pixar sequel video explaining why Finding Dory worked and you underestimated it half a year ago? Finding Dory handled Dory's character much better than Cars 2 handled Mater's character, and you forgot about other meaningful scenes that Marlin and Nemo had in it, which is more than we can say for Lightning McQueen in Cars Too. This is why the Toy Story sequels are no longer "the only Pixar sequels that work."

Out of all the sequels DreamWorks have done, I'd say they only have 2 lackluster ones with Boss Baby 2 and Trolls 2 (I'm not counting Spirit: Untamed as it's a COMPLETELY different movie to the 2002 film) then I'd say they only have 2 terrible sequels with Croods 2 and Shrek the Third. Other then that DreamWorks have made excellent sequels and while sure films such as Madagascar 2&3, Shrek: Forever After and Kung Fu Panda 3 may have a few issues, they still have a lot of merit but the studio's best sequels really do continue the story, develop the characters even further and expand the world. They're also very good at conclusions especially with HTTYD 3: The Hidden World so here's to hoping that Kung Fu Panda 4 is just as good and possibly even better than Kung Fu Panda 2.
And as for my top 5 favourite DreamWorks Sequels
#1 How To Train Your Dragon 3

I don't know why so many people hate the third Shrek movie. It was actually really good, showing how important one day can be when you don't truly appreciate what you have. Yeah it may not be the most original, being a parody of it's a wonderful life, but they made it their own film.
I do however wish that the kids didn't just come out of nowhere and actually some build up to that at the end of the 2nd, or start of the 3rd movie, but it makes sense.

Yeah ok. Most elementary school books have these themes but are labeled for kids so what makes these movies any different. Also boss baby and trolls are hard tone shifts compared to other DreamWorks movies. So I don't really get what calling them garbage is going to accomplish when shark tale is made fun of too and Is clearly more adult at first glance. There are not many similer feeling films that can be compared.

Shrek 4 is literally a fairy tale ending what more can you add to a close book for Shrek 5.
Kung Fu Panda 4 what more po can learn in Kung Fu Panda 3 po found his real father, learn how to be a true dragon warrior and become the master of the jade palace what more can Po learn in Kung Fu Panda 4.
