From GranBlue, P3R, FF7R; Unicorn Overlord, etc I’m already so behind but I’m soooo happy for all the content. And then to think of things like Mana and ReFantazio coming, this year is unimaginable. Not only is the jrpg renaissance in FULL swing, this feels like a new PS2 era of jrpg’s that are unabashedly jrpg’s. Their westernization derangement is over. They’re hot dumbing them down or simplifying stuff, none of that. They just give us meaty RPG’s with tons of exploration and they keep giving us more top tier games. This year is so nostalgic for me, and I know years later I will have nostalgia for this period of my life
You need to change your mindset. Instead of stressing about the amount of backlog you have to go through you should be happy about having a lot of things to look forward to in the future. I love backlogs. It means there is always something new and exciting for me to try. That's why I'm never in a hurry to finish my games. I might be the only backlog gamer who actually finishes the games he starts.
Just finished Tokyo Xanadu recently and I agree that it is quite an underrated action rpg gem. Speaking of action RPGs, I think you forgot to include Ys X that is also coming this fall which I am most hyped for.
Every year for at least the last 5 years has been a great year for JRPGs and RPGs in general. I feel so out of sync with so many other gamers that I hear constantly saying "gaming is dying" or "AAA gaming is dying" or things along these lines lamenting the lack of good games to play, because I've got more games than I could ever keep up with and more just keep releasing.
I'm gonna piss off some people with saying this but gaming is only dying for fans of western games. As a jrpg lover, it feels like every year is a good year. I have gone through more than 10 games over the last year and still have 13 game ony my backlog. And trust me, I'm very very selective when it comes to games. And I certainly missed out big over the years. Wether old or new games, there were a lot of masterpieces I played. Grandia, FFV, FFVI, Crisis Core Reunion and espcially Ys 8 Lacrimosa of Dana were tons of fun. And I dare say they are all masterpieces. Gonna move on to Octopath Traveler II, Bravely Default II and Ys IX Monstrum Nox.
I agree, this year is abslolutly insane and you did not even mention games like Ys X or the fact that new games could be revealed and come out this year. I look forward to Eiyuden chronicle, SMT V Vengeance because I freakin' love SMT V, Trails through Daybreak because it is Trails and it is the best series ever, Visions of Mana, Metaphor. I honestly did not think that 2023 could be topped but it looks like 2024 is THE year of JRPGs.
I called this a couple months ago and thank you for driving this point home Taylor! 2024 is THE year for RPG fans. With a string of these types of games already dominating the market & much more to come, there's no stopping this hype train! It really is strange how less than a decade ago, RPGs were at a low point, but look now. This is a renaissance of excellent RPGs for all generations. It is one hell of a time to be alive!
Not only jrpgs, the battle for the GOTY award will be a complete mayhem. It's very rare for me to put more than 50 hours straight in a single game, this year that habit got obliterated. I put more than 110 hours in granblue fantasy, 130 hours in like a Dragon infinite wealth, 140 hours in FFVIIREBIRTH and currently have 70 hours in Dragons Dogma 2, expecting more than 100 hours in Stellar Blade and other games coming later this year, totally crazy.
I’m so jealous! I wish I had that much time to game. I’ve only been playing Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth since it released and have a little over 50 hours in it.
Unicorn Overlord is easily one of the best games I've ever played, and likely my goty. Eiyuden Chronicles is probably the only other game in with a chance, but it's got A LOT of work to do to even enter the conversation
@@TheGamingShelf more than a Nier game, I'd be more interested in a game that bridges the gap between Drakengard Ending E and Nier. We're told small details and that's it.
Do you have to go through everything? Maybe I'm just too selective but when something doesn't seem interesting to me or when I know exactly that something isn't my type of game then why should I bother playing it? Though there are at least 6 games this year on my wishlist. So yeah, there is a lot to go through.
I literally just beat FFVII Rebirth before watching this vid and the entire time me and my bro were playing I couldn't get over how good it was? how much it made me love characters I either didn't care about or actively didn't like in OG. and the MUSIC I just can't get over it. I have complicated feelings about the OG but I'm glad it was made so that this game could be made. I cannot wait till the next part even though I know it's going to be the hardest part for me to play... but now I'm here looking a big pile of games and being like... how am I supposed to have enough time to play all this?? plus I wanna get thousand year door because I've heard it's the best paper Mario and I never got to play it when I was young. also daybreak aahhh there is too much I do not have enough hours in the day! anyways great vid! keep up the good work!
I’m close to hitting 100 hours on Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, while Gran Blue Fantasy Relink, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and Stellar Blade are downloaded and ready to go on my backlog - but that’s how much fun I’m having with IW. Loving it so much
This year has been fantastic Cannot wait for SMT V: Vengence,YS Nordic, trails through daybreak, visions of mana, sandland and ofc Metaphor Re:Fantazio
I've been playing Unicorn Overlord SO MUCH. I've been enjoying it SO MUCH. How can it be so good? How does valinnaware get to make every single time such great games?
Almost finished Rebirth but before starting anything else I'd like to at least complete one of my 2023 backlog jrpg's as it was a busy year. Should I play Sea of Stars, Octopath II or Star Ocean 2R (finished SO2 OG back in the day) ?
Tials of Mana didn't do it for me. Propably because I played it after Ys 8. But Vision of Mana looks great so I have my fingers crossed that it will deliver.
2022 was a banger year for AA JRPGs, though they seemed to cannibalize each-other for sales and fan attention. It had: Soul Hackers 2, Diofield Chronicles, Lost Eidolons, Triangle Strategy, Star Ocean: Divine Force, Harvestella, Ogre Tactics: Reborn, Chained Echoes.
Yeah 2022 was the best RPGs year for me since the 90s. And then last year with OT2, SoS, and SO2r was great too. 2022-24 are all stellar if you're an RPG fan, basically lol
About the mixed turn based+action games like Trails to Daybreak, it seems only for open field battles(no bosses) and for ReFantazio it's either to make weaker enemies not taking your time(you can get rid of them immediately) or to gain advantage(getting first hits). Kinda wish they have full action spin offs considering Falcom already are good at making Ys games, and for Atlus they already had P5S(though that was mostly the Koei musou team?)
For Daybreak/Kuro it is. Honestly the non command/turn based is just for streamlining mob encounters and make it "fun" at the same time. In Kuro 2 you will be able to cast a limited magic to make it more time efficient. I don't see they will make a full transition like how FF is.
@@calendar6526 yeah especially since they already have Ys, what I mean is spinoffs instead of mainline titles, just shorter games that are a bit too big to just be a minigame. Kinda like Nayuta but bigger. Imagine a whole game where you control the Divine Knights in action for example(and hopefully not as clunky as that minigame in Reverie)
Your FF7 Rebirth review was SOO well said!! I completely agree with 110% what u said! Maybe only thing is that you used too many cutscenes from 'surprise' moments in the game like the dance etc. I want to share this video but not spoil too much footage to friends xD Well well well spoken/said /reviewed!!
Just recently finished Persona 3 Reload, still need to finish Trails into Reverie, and there's another Legend of Hero's coming soon... between watching anime and playing JRPGs I'm surprised i have time to eat lol.
While they're not new, I am super looking forward to playing Monster Hunter Stories 1 and 2 on my PS5. It will be nice playing them on a bigger screen (I only had a switch lite) and being able to get trophies. I checked out Grandia 1 on the HD Collection when it came out and I was not expecting it to look as good as it does on my tv. I thought it was going to look stretched and stuff. Dragon's Dogma 2 is my game of the year so far. Just love the freedom you get. Once you make it to the capital, you can just eschew the main story and do pretty much anything else you want. I'm going to have all the vacations mastered by the time I get to the story.
9:06 did they actually make this game in 4 years? Or is it more likely that they were working on rebirth at the same time as remake? To me that would explain why remake is a much smaller scope game.
I finished Unicorn Overlord the other night now going through the Post Game, at first I thought the story is kind of meh but once you finish Elheim things become more interesting. The level of depth in terms of team composition is kind of insane, and the gear you get can sometimes fully re-purpose a class. Like making a Thief into a great support type unit. I feel like this game might become overshadowed as the year goes on; for fans of JRPG's I suggest just to give it a go even if it's just the demo.
Loved persona 3 reload and ff7 rebirth, got granblue and infinite wealth coming for my birthday next week then getting euyiden Kickstarter next month although I’ll play on gamepass and keep my copy sealed
Maybe, we'll see. I am definitely excited about 4 games you mentioned. And the one I've already finished and platinum'd is likely my goty. Hopefully the other 3 are great too! 🤞🤞
Grandblue Fantasy Relink, Ys X, Vision of Mana, Eiyuden Chronicles, Suikoden I & II, SacriFire, FF7 Rebirth, AI Limit, Reynatis. I don't think there was ever a year with so many jrpgs on my wishlist.
I'm going through FF7 Rebirth very slowly as I have very little time for games with my job. But I'm really loving it. Visions of Mana and Ys X Nordics are what I'm looking forward to the most coming up.
It seems like everyone has the same games on their wishlist. That's how you know it's a great year for jrpgs. There is no need to rush through games though. Limited time is the reason why I've become very selective with my games. Because I don't want to rush through them but take my time to play them thoroughly. Try to look at your backlog from a different perspective. It means that you won't get bored for a long time because there is always something new and exciting for you to play.
FF7R definitely took more than 4 years to make. The foundation and engine that they built in Remake was re-used so these past for years they got to focus on content with slight tweaks to the engine. But that's not a bad thing, this is how Square was about to pump out a new FF every year or two back in the 90's.
I've been playing all Legend of Heroes games (Sky, Zero, Azure and Cold Steel) and I'm loving it. Really looking forward to playing Reverie and Through Daybreak. The new game of the makers of Persona is also looking amazing
I thought 2023 was a great year for games and RPG’s. Apparently 2024 wants to be better and I’m all for it. I hope we don’t have to wait too long for the final installment to the FF7 Remake trilogy
Hey guys can somebody tell me whats the thing with the trails series? Are they all connected together? So it really doesent make sense for a guy like me to just jump right in because i will not get it? I havent played one of those games before
They are all connected with trails of cold steel being the culmination point of the series. You can hop in at any series but if you start with cold steel you will miss out on references of events from other games. Characters from other series like the main parties from other games also become guest and playable characters in cold steel so if anything at least familiarize yourself because there is A LOT OF CHARACTERS. Lol
'So what has been your favourite jrpg of 2024?' Me looking at Persona 3 Reload and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth like I've been asked to choose my favourite child.
I agree that FF7 Rebirth is incredible! It has successfully dethroned the Witcher III as my favorite game of all time (so far). I haven't finished it yet but I've been loving every second.
I thought the same, Witcher 3 is my number 1 game and FF7 Rebirth dethroned it for sure. Got 114 hours so far and just started chapter 13. 100% every region, only missing some hard minigames, piano, gilgamesh and vr brutal challenges. Then hard for platina but not sure if i will do it, some minigames are so annoying like brawler Sephiroth and some others.
I wish I would care for FF7 Rebirth :( But I did not enjoy the remake that much, mostly due to the battle system, that I gave up halfway through it. But I am so hyped for Eiyuden Chronicle... Three more weeks...
I'm exactly the same way, you're not alone! I didn't like combat in FF15 either. Idk why I like Star Ocean and Tales of action combat but not Final Fantasy, it is what it is I guess. I too am EAGERLY awaiting Eiyuden Chronicles, especially since I already finished Unicorn Overlord
@@airdrighmor1439Visuals and these things, yes. The problem is that there is nothing to do outside of roaming on the desert to fight some enemies. And the trailers showed us that there is a lot of things to do. The demo would be better if it was a slice of the game with some things to do.
I had to skip granblue fantasy relink, infinite wealth, and P3R. It hurts so much lol. Fortunately I was able to get FF7 Rebirth, and the physical deluxe edition at that. Just started chapter 10 and it seems like it only gets better and better somehow!
Great video like always. In answer to the question of the video, no, 2024 is not the best year for JRPGs ever. That belongs to 1998. Final Fantasy Tactics, Breath of Fire 3, Xenogears, Brave Fencer Musashi, Alundra, Parasite Eve, Saga Frontier, Tactics Ogre, Tales of Destiny.
FF7 could be the best game of the year but because its only on ps5, people just watch it on youtube and end up not buying it. I did the same with Part 1.
@@TheGamingShelf yes i know but they take forever to bring it out on PC then charge full price for a game they made me wait for because they want to take sony exclusive money and that i've already seen. The games made in unreal engine 4, a PC engine, they show the game play trailers playing on the PC platform. Still waiting on ff16. So yeah i miss out because of Playstation/Sony and Square shoot themselves in the foot. I'm not the only one who feels this way, theres very little hype when it eventually comes to PC because it's not new by the time its out. You can see this in Steam Stats for part 1 for example. doesn't sell like a normal new release.
The dlc for the tale of arise is the best jrpg of the year so far. Granblue relink is a grind and they reskin the bosses like 3 times. Dragons dogma 2 has a mess of a story but the combat has some appeal. Unless ys comes out with another game this year, the upcoming mana game will be a good contender for the best.
I finished FF7R in 120hrs and loved it, then went into Rise of the Ronin and having a ton of fun too. My P3 reload copy is collecting dust cause I was on Crisis Core remastered, with a bit of helldivers 2 (and also suicide squad :/). I have dragons dogma 2 and unicorn overlord waitin too. Basically stop releasing games in 2024 please and thank you
Ah palworld, having your slaves work on the assembly line to build that base! Well Rebirth probably came quickish because they had a lot assests from the first part of the remake! Need to pick up unicorn overlord soonish, one I'm real excited to play! Gonna be so poor buying all these games!
I wish i had the same adoration woth rebirth. To me its all filler. I would have preffered a more compact game focused on story and combat. But i also hate the combat. Give me turn based forever
Dragons dogma isnt a jrpg. Its a fantasy adventure/action game. If its a jrpg then ANYTHING from japan is a jrpg. Its more of a fantasy game based on older fantasy lore. I get you can customize skills but jrpg was its own niche but now any game that comes from japan is a jrpg? This type of fantasy reminds me of might and magic from the 90s.

I thought 2023 was a great year for games and RPG’s. Apparently 2024 wants to be better and I’m all for it. I hope we don’t have to wait too long for the final installment to the FF7 Remake trilogy
It'll probably be another 4, but honestly that's really quick in the current gaming landscape.
Lol
'So what has been your favourite jrpg of 2024?'
Me looking at Persona 3 Reload and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth like I've been asked to choose my favourite child.
Ys x coming west this year cemented it as a very great jrpg year. For me and most of yous Im sure , 24 is even better than 23.
Dude what amazing year I'm excited about all of these ! I'm currently playing unicorn and it's super awesome so many game for my back log
And you didn't even mention the Elden Ring DLC - fantastic year for JRPGs!
I think the ending of Ff7 Rebirth really soiled my opinion of it, but your overview reminded me that the journey there was a fantastic experience.
@@gotaplanstan I need to play Unicorn Overlord, it looks great!
AFK Journey looks sooo good and the artstyle is on point 👌🏻
I'm struggling to finish all the demos.
SMT V Vengeance is got moved from June 21 it moved to June 14. Why? Because Elden Ring DLC
Thank God for the Playstation Portal 🙏🏽 I'm able to play all my rgs with ease.
Rebirth has the best chance to finally win a GOTY for Final fantasy
I honestly don't know what would beat it. There's not a ton of big hitters that we know of still coming.
It's so insane, I am not even done with 2023 backlog, but right now, I jumped to FF7 Rebirth because it's a no.1 priority 😊
Smart choice! It's such a great game that you don't want to have spoiled.
Took 2 weeks off from work to play FF7:Rebirth & completed it in a month
YOU FORGOT YS X: NORDICS!!!!!!!!!
But yeah 2024 is stacked truly!
You’re totally right and I’m really excited for that game too! Oops 😆
I cannot wait to play FF VII Rebirth on PC. Hoping the port isn't weak.
It's gonna run like a dream...hopefully lol.
Sand Land demo was AWEFUL !!!
Just WALKING the expansive desert with NO clear aim. NO vehicle access to it takes ages to get nowhere.
I agree it was a terrible demo, but you get a motobike, mech, and a tank in the demo
While the demo was indeed bad, you have three vehicles dude.
I thought it was awesome. Maybe the full game will be more appealing to some. I'm already sold.
@@airdrighmor1439Visuals and these things, yes. The problem is that there is nothing to do outside of roaming on the desert to fight some enemies. And the trailers showed us that there is a lot of things to do. The demo would be better if it was a slice of the game with some things to do.
@@theLikou1 ah. I greatly prefer gameplay demos with zero story. That's what the full game is for. It was perfect, for me.
Ffvii is already a fav. Looking forward to granblue and trails. Trails is awesome been a fan since psp. Shame its so daunting to new comers.
I had to skip granblue fantasy relink, infinite wealth, and P3R. It hurts so much lol. Fortunately I was able to get FF7 Rebirth, and the physical deluxe edition at that. Just started chapter 10 and it seems like it only gets better and better somehow!
It truly does. Savor it! It's such a special game and we don't get ones like this often.
we will finally have corpse party 2 in fall !! i'm so hype for this game too !
You forgot saga emerald beyond bro 😢
the only one i care about!!!
Oh I got a special SaGa video coming up this month. Stay tuned ;)
SaGa Frontier being garbage aside, that one’s hard to argue!
Definitely the best year. Hyped for dragon quest 3 in Nov
FF7 could be the best game of the year but because its only on ps5, people just watch it on youtube and end up not buying it. I did the same with Part 1.
If all you do is watch it then you're really missing out on the experience. You could say that for literally any game.
All incredible games. I just wish Atlus would lay off the HUDS so I could see theirs.
The art is not from george kamitani but Takafumi Noma and Masami Yanagi
unicorn overlord IS OGRE BATTLE.... am i too old? why everyone dont have ogre battle as reference to compare unicorn overlord ?
The dlc for the tale of arise is the best jrpg of the year so far. Granblue relink is a grind and they reskin the bosses like 3 times. Dragons dogma 2 has a mess of a story but the combat has some appeal. Unless ys comes out with another game this year, the upcoming mana game will be a good contender for the best.
okay, you got my attention.
this is as exciting as with Octopath traveler.
FFVII rebirth is GOTY
I want to play ff7 rebirth, but it needs to come out on pc. I don't want a ps5
It's already announced for PC but it won't be released any sooner than 2025.
Just wait a year or two
The answer is yes, yes it is
I bought a ps5 for ff7 rebirth. i will say i am trying to play through intermission first. its fun. can't wait for rebirth though.
Don't forget FF16 DLC, the Rising Tide!
I absolutely will forget, but I'm happy for those looking forward to it :)
Basically stop releasing games in 2024 please and thank you
Still trying finish the first Yakuza Like a Dragon 😒😆
@Atomic_7X Yakuza 7 with my boy Ichi. Just beat it yesterday too. The ending was good!
@Atomic_7X Crazy part is I started 8 and have 20 Trophies left in 7 to get an feel awful lol. 🫡 To you and getting that Platinum
@Atomic_7X Agreed
Ah palworld, having your slaves work on the assembly line to build that base! Well Rebirth probably came quickish because they had a lot assests from the first part of the remake! Need to pick up unicorn overlord soonish, one I'm real excited to play! Gonna be so poor buying all these games!
This would’ve been the first AAAA game if skull and bones don’t beat them to it 😂😂😂😂😂
🤣
And FF14 will get its newest expansion. Those are always huge
And the graphic update! I'm hyped for that almost more than the expansion lol
Yes. Yes it is.
Thank you
No u
The answer is free on game pass 🥳
Plus Ys X
Dont forget yakuza 8. Easily one of the best of the year.
I didn’t. Watch the video again ;)
wdym? palworld is JRPG. it's an rpg made by japanese.
That's actually a good point lol. I keep forgetting a Japanese team made it.
Lol every single RUclipsr is the same lately. A jrpg channel dedicated to jrpgs and every video is "I just don't have time to get to these games".
JRPGs are super long. Even though I play them all day long there still isn't enough time lol.
Whatever that survival thing is, doesn’t seem like a JRPG
Nice jrpgs all year
I wish i had the same adoration woth rebirth. To me its all filler. I would have preffered a more compact game focused on story and combat. But i also hate the combat. Give me turn based forever
I skipped FF7 don’t count for me, I skipped it because I hated remake. But Unicorn overlord , like a dragon 8 and Dragons Dogma 2 are excellent jrpgs,
Dragons dogma isnt a jrpg.
Unicorn Overlord is pretty solid. Really great!
Dragons dogma. Capcom
We only need Nintendo to announce a Xenoblade Cross port to Switch
