Live A Live is also in here for me. Underrated cult classic that is remade in the beautiful HD-2D style from Team Asano, while also officially bringing the game to the west.
The Star Ocean Second Story remake should be the golden standard for future hd 2d/2.5d remakes, it's what I dreamed from a Suikoden/II remake, though I'll still take the upcoming rerelease.
Oath in Felghana is a great shout! I'd add Memories of Celceta to the list of great remakes as well. Falcom seems very willing to revisit titles in this series and really shake things up.
I actually hoped they will remake the YS Lost Kefin,it really needed one(ive only played the Snes one though)despite what i heard from most newer gen YS fan that it was a bad YS game,i actually felt it was too harsh on the game since it was ambitious for it times, and didnt aged well with times, not to mention the open area, and no more Adol Bump system actually make it refreshing to play back then if you was a long time YS fan that started from 1
Thanks Alex for a wonderful video. I am playing Ys Oath at present and loving it. I love all these games so much except I can't play Souls games. I loved watching my sons play it. It was a wonderful holiday memory. I would so love a modern remake/remaster of Skies of Arcadia. I am looking forward to Final Fantasy VIIII remake as I kept getting lost in that game. Thanks for your wonderful insights.
Star Ocean 2 remake being as insanely good as it is came out of nowhere i stg. Like i loved the original, and then the psp remaster, and i knew they were remaking it this time...but still, nothing prepared me for how much of a masterpiece it truly is. It's literally the first game ever that I've played through multiple times in a row of on launch. And I'm 41.
EXCELLENT list, my friend! I've played over half of these remakes and they are marvelous. I'd also add Live a Live to that list as well, as this remake is sooo good. Another fantastic video!!
Yeah, these remakes have such amazing quality behind them. Kicking off this year with both Persona 3 Reload and Final Fantasy Rebirth was an absolute godsend for JRPG fans!
What. A. List. Ys 9 is close but Oath in Felghana is still my favourite in the series. Rebirth makes me feel as if I am living in an alternate timeline.
I've picked up both NieR Replicant and Automata around the same time, and I've been hooked on Replicant. The setting and characters drew me in from the very beginning. I didn't play the original Gestalt when it arrived in the states around 2010, so I'm thankful I can give Replicant a try on modern hardware. I like the fantay setting of Replicant more-so than Automata, but it's really a personal preference thing. Both it and Automata are great, but I'm having a hard time putting down Replicant! :D
I loved Oath in Felghana, it was the first time playing through the Ys games in order where everything really clicked for me. It, Origin, and VI are great and I'm a huge fan of that style (though I love 8 & 9 as well). I'd love to see more Ys games done up like Felghana, to be honest.
I hope they consider going back to some of their back catalog to give the Felghana treatment! I think it'd be cool to see how they'd update those games!
I played Wanderers from Ys way back on the SNES and honestly didn't know Oath in Felgana was a remake of it(though I did know it was a remake of one of the earlier titles) until you get to the scene where you're thrown into a pit and then have to fight your way back up. That's when it clicked for me. I don't have a lot of solid memories of the older game, but that's one scene that stuck with me. At this point, I've played every released Ys title in one form or another except for that Mask one(5 I think, though I wouldn't swear on it).
1st time watching a video from you. Great recomendation from RUclips. Would love to give an honorable mention to Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Amazing glow-up of a long forgotten entry in Fire Emblem that replaces Gaiden because of how faithful and respectful it is. Maybe too respectfull with map design and it would have been interesting to implement some aspects of the super dark manga instead of sticking to the Hero's Journey of the original. But, the things it added are just great to see especially when hou hear the developers talk about the game.
Unfortunately i know its Japan only but Tales of Destiny remake is one of the best remakes i ever played! Its so so good! Its a shame namco didn't bring it alongside Destiny 2 officially 😭
Im currently going through all the Ys games in order ( my own personal backlog battle) and after hearing you talk about Ys3, I was thinking about Ys5 which is by far the hardest one to get and play, so I thought I'd suggest/request a video on games than never left Japan and should or fan translations that saved the day?
Star Ocean: The Second Story R is the best example of a remake I have ever played! I also liked the Final Fantasy pixel remaster games. Yeah, I know people nitpick over the spites, and some of the graphics, the music, and how they basically used the same menu system for all 6 of them and so on, but they're still faithful to the originals from which they were built. For people who will never have access to the originals on original hardware or can't get access to them on a mini console or what ever, they're still a great way to play the first 6 games without going down the "other path" which not everyone is wanting to do for one reason or another. Considering how difficult some of first 6 games can get at times, the pixel remasters with their bug fixes and quality of life improvements are a good way for people new to old school JRPGs to play them for the first time. For those of us who played them when they were new on original hardware, it's a different world now. Back then we had a lot more time on our hands when we were kids and games were very expensive so we either rented a lot or didn't play a lot of different games so we had time to grind and redo dungeons after getting an unexpected party wipe (looking at you WarMECH). Today, we have giant backlogs of games in our libraries that we may never get through as we buy games for cheap and there's a lot of of good ones we want to spend more of our limited time on (now we're adults with jobs, families, etc.). I think the pixel remasters understand how the times changed while preserving what the games originally were really well. I just wish they didn't go as far off the rails as they did for the FF7 masters, but that's a rant for another day. lol
Trials of Mana is possibly the best remake to date in my opinion. I took the ambitious, but honestly a bit clunky gameplay of the original and turned it into a fun and engaging experience. Excellent work by SE on this one. Off the top of my head, the only game I can think to add is Atelier Rorona. While the original game was charming and what got me into the series, the Plus/DX versions update the game with models closer to the beautiful concept art and brush up the mechanics to be a little closer to other to the sequels. I suppose there's also the Front Mission remake but I haven't played it yet.
I'm still super salty that the remake doesn't have multiplayer. Really enjoyed that in the original. Also sad that Visions won't be having it either :(
I know a Vanillaware game that needs a Remake - a little Japan-only Sega Saturn classic by the name of "Princess Crown", gosh darn it! And give it the Leifthrasir treatment, too - with the option of playing the original version!
