I actually hoped they will remake the YS Lost Kefin,it really needed one(ive only played the Snes one though)despite what i heard from most newer gen YS fan that it was a bad YS game,i actually felt it was too harsh on the game since it was ambitious for it times, and didnt aged well with times, not to mention the open area, and no more Adol Bump system actually make it refreshing to play back then if you was a long time YS fan that started from 1

Star Ocean 2 remake being as insanely good as it is came out of nowhere i stg. Like i loved the original, and then the psp remaster, and i knew they were remaking it this time...but still, nothing prepared me for how much of a masterpiece it truly is. I've picked up both NieR Replicant and Automata around the same time, and I've been hooked on Replicant.
The setting and characters drew me in from the very beginning. I didn't play the original Gestalt when it arrived in the states around 2010, so I'm thankful I can give Replicant a try on modern hardware.
I like the fantay setting of Replicant more-so than Automata, but it's really a personal preference thing. Both it and Automata are great, but I'm having a hard time putting down Replicant! :D

I played Wanderers from Ys way back on the SNES and honestly didn't know Oath in Felgana was a remake of it(though I did know it was a remake of one of the earlier titles) until you get to the scene where you're thrown into a pit and then have to fight your way back up. That's when it clicked for me. I don't have a lot of solid memories of the older game, but that's one scene that stuck with me. At this point, I've played every released Ys title in one form or another except for that Mask one(5 I think, though I wouldn't swear on it).

1st time watching a video from you. Great recomendation from RUclips.
Would love to give an honorable mention to Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Amazing glow-up of a long forgotten entry in Fire Emblem that replaces Gaiden because of how faithful and respectful it is. Maybe too respectfull with map design and it would have been interesting to implement some aspects of the super dark manga instead of sticking to the Hero's Journey of the original. But, the things it added are just great to see especially when hou hear the developers talk about the game.

Star Ocean: The Second Story R is the best example of a remake I have ever played!
I also liked the Final Fantasy pixel remaster games. Yeah, I know people nitpick over the spites, and some of the graphics, the music, and how they basically used the same menu system for all 6 of them and so on, but they're still faithful to the originals from which they were built. For people who will never have access to the originals on original hardware or can't get access to them on a mini console or what ever, they're still a great way to play the first 6 games without going down the "other path" which not everyone is wanting to do for one reason or another. Considering how difficult some of first 6 games can get at times, the pixel remasters with their bug fixes and quality of life improvements are a good way for people new to old school JRPGs to play them for the first time.
For those of us who played them when they were new on original hardware, it's a different world now. Back then we had a lot more time on our hands when we were kids and games were very expensive so we either rented a lot or didn't play a lot of different games so we had time to grind and redo dungeons after getting an unexpected party wipe (looking at you WarMECH). Today, we have giant backlogs of games in our libraries that we may never get through as we buy games for cheap and there's a lot of of good ones we want to spend more of our limited time on (now we're adults with jobs, families, etc.). I think the pixel remasters understand how the times changed while preserving what the games originally were really well.
I just wish they didn't go as far off the rails as they did for the FF7 masters, but that's a rant for another day. lol

Trials of Mana is possibly the best remake to date in my opinion. I took the ambitious, but honestly a bit clunky gameplay of the original and turned it into a fun and engaging experience. Excellent work by SE on this one.
Off the top of my head, the only game I can think to add is Atelier Rorona. While the original game was charming and what got me into the series, the Plus/DX versions update the game with models closer to the beautiful concept art and brush up the mechanics to be a little closer to other to the sequels.
I suppose there's also the Front Mission remake but I haven't played it yet.

While most people love ff VII remake, I on the other hand miss the menu based turned based combat. This whole action combat system just feels out of place. It’s the exact same reason I can’t get into modern Final Fantasy games. Square enix just thew us old school fans under the bus to cater to the new generation. I understand that they are a business, but I’ve been supporting this developer for over 30 years. That kind of loyalty has to mean something to these developers.
Edit: My favorite remake was the lunar series. It was just so damn good. That series embodies what I love about jrpgs.

    • @gwgux
      @gwgux 8 месяцев назад +1

I agree. I never finished the FF7 Remake and I haven't even touched Rebirth yet for that very same reason. They need to bring back turned based combat when they remake a game that had turned based combat or it's just feels "off" when I go to play it. It looks visually good, has a lot of new content I wanted to get to know, etc., but it just didn't feel like Final Fantasy 7 with the combat being so different in the game. It felt more like a new game wearing a Final Fantasy 7 themed outfit. The magic that made FF7 great was lost in it.
Not everything has to be fast action paced adventure.

Hell yeah, Tactics Ogre Reborn! As a fan of the PS1 version, and a huge Matsuno fan, Reborn is a fantastic version (dare I say, the best) of this classic.
And with rumours about that FF Tactics remaster (hopefully it's true), that leaves only Vagrant Story to get this treatment and bring it to modern platforms! Please, oh, please Square Enix!! A Vagrant Story Reborn would be a dream! Personally I think it's Matsuno's best game.
And you mentioned the difficulty of Tactics Ogre, I think Vagrant Story is even harder. It just has so many layers of systems to understand, and does very little to help you out, but it's fascinating how it all ends up working. And it's very satisfying to figure it out, and use it to your advantage once you do. What a masterpiece. Not only that, as you mentioned Demon's Souls as well, Vagrant Story is often compared to the Souls games these days for its challenge and similar aesthetic. They definitely do share some DNA, but Vagrant Story came out NINE YEARS before Demon's Souls. Crazy how far ahead of its time Vagrant Story was!!

Have to note despite an issue or two Tales of Symphonia, the new Live A Live if it counts here. Maybe Heart Gold and Soul Silver a bit of a stretch but it might fit. Xenoblade Chronicles Defitnive Edition also was great. Last on this and again if it passes here all 6 Pixel Remasters of the first 6 Final Fantasy games, they have there issues and problems but they are great versions and it's great to be able to play a few of them now on newer consoles.

I'm currently playing Star Ocean Second Story R, but I'm not exactly blown away by it. I never played the original, but got the remake because of so many RPGtubers singing its praises.
15 hours in, the plot feels barebones and doesn't make me excited to push forward. Currently I'm kinda annoyed by the childish jealousy dynamic in the relationship between Claude and Rena. The skills (IC) system feels overwhelming at times and I'm not sure how much to engage with it using my 3 party members, or if I should wait until I get more recruits before splitting up skill distributions more equally. Also (I acknowledge this is very subjective) I don't really like Claude's English voice acting, his tone and inflections comes across as slightly too eager to please sometimes. I tried the JP voices (very cool options there) but in the end just chose to mute all VA altogether.
I can't complain about the gameplay features, they mostly seem to be top notch and bring this title up to par with modern games. Although I'm wondering why they don't allow full camera rotation in town since everything's in 3D now, it would really help with the fishing minigame if you can see the size of fish you're attracting without being blocked by environmental geometry. I'm also preferring the original music over the new arranged tracks, the latter feels quite heavy at times, giving a somewhat overbearing feel to places like the starting village or in dungeons where the main melody is shorter and repeats more often.
I dunno guys, were my expectations over inflated because of all the praise given by the media? Or does this game get much better in the next two thirds of the story? (For context my last JRPG was Chained Echoes and I felt it lived up to all the hype.)
