Amazingly we seem to have gone backwards in how we do music, I just cannot see anyone today producing a Musical masterpiece such as this, just wonderful every play :)

This song breaks my heart. Reminds of a friend that I've known since high school. He was brilliant, ahead of his time but over time he slipped into addiction and madness. I only saw the crescent, he saw the whole of the moon.

One of those albums that doesn't have a single bad or even mediocre note on it. Every song still sounds as strong as it did when I first took it out of its sleeve back in 1985.

I own several albums by The Waterboys and I have always valued and appreciated the meaning of the songs' lyrics.
Mike Scott has very clear diction so you can understand the lyrics he is singing.
I love everything about The Waterboys'.
"Don't Bang The Drum" will make you very glad that they did......Bang The Drum.
I met a Girl called Johnny in a Pagan Place, when she left I got The Fisherman's Blues where someone pointed out that This is the Sea.
    Great Bands have great Drummers.............

Saw them at the Riviera in Chicago in the 80s - what a show! Has it been 36 plus years since! Decades later and the music still holds up!
"Fisherman Blues" and "And a Bang on the Ear" Incredible songs.

Great choice, Laurie. Lots of second choices available. Suggest A Church Not Made With Hands, A Pagan Place, The Pan Within, Fisherman’s Blues, The Big Music to name a few. A band that truly deserved a broader appeal than they received. Cheers!

This is a great song! Bought the album when I saw the music video, the band (with violinist and a trumpeter to boot!) kind of reminded me of Dexy’s Midnight Runners in the way they performed it with such freedom and passion (especially with the last set of lyrics, from “unicorns and cannonballs, palaces and piers…” onwards…really singing from the heart and ringing out the emotion!)

I just want to duplicate what people are saying. The Waterboys have such a wonderfully varied music supermarket trolley of stuff. From fun tunes to deep spiritual songs. "Everlasting Arms", "Bring 'Em All In", "A Man Is in Love", "Too Close to Heaven", "Building the City of Light" then "Rare, Precious and Gone", "Saints and Angels". "Beverly Penn", "On my wat to Tara", its endless. Also try the album "Karma To Burn" and on it goes............

This song make a good example about one thing : There's no way 2000's pop music can beat the 80-90's in composition, mood and soul inside the song.
Today musicians were to much depending on computer to make the tunes. They've synthesized almost every sound & tune they made with DAW and other programs.
Yes they were fast & easy to composed, yes they were nice to heard......but much of them sounded so robotic and plain.
    No pop up background melody
No sudden improve of vocals or instruments
No Soul and Mood in every chain of notes
Just sounded like automaton everyday alarm clock... Nice but easy to forget
I really miss the old days music, when composers really composed the music from their heart.....not from CPU & Microchips

Hi, Nice reaction recently discovered you channel through your love of Freddie Starr (i knew Freddie for a brief moment in time, which I'll enlightening you on another more appropriate video). but the waterboys were a very under rated band i felt great songwriting and meaningful lyrics and this brings me to my point Waterboys wrote a song called STRANGE BOAT which has a great message if i feel, but i you do react to this song strangely i would recommend Tom Jones's version its probably my favourite of his songs. you have a great voice by the way.

If you like the song musically and lyrically, YOU WILL DEFINITELY LOVE MANDY MOORE'S cover of The Whole Of The Moon! Most definitely! By far, the best song Mandy Moore ever recorded in her career. And she does it much much better than The Waterboys. And Mandy has made many really good songs. And some great songs. But Whole Of The Moon is her finest 5 minutes.
