Probably one of the best singles ever. Simple as that really. I smiled just like that the first time i heard it. Never gets old. 😊
When I was a teen I lived in a small town in North East Washington State, that was so close to Canada, that you could literally see it from my house. The radio station in Trail, BC was CJAT. They'd play this song several times a day. Every time I hear it, I'm 18 years old, standing under the moonlight drinking beer with my bros. Nothing but the very best memories ever time I hear this. :)
Still gives me goosebumps to this day, priceless. The band's membership, past and present, has been composed mainly of musicians from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England. RIP Karl
Waterboys are from Scotland and it’s a song that a generation of Scots know every word of that song of by heart. Another anthem from Scotland is Deacon Blue - Dignity.
This is a brilliant song about thinking you know a lot from learning within your culture but then discovering there are people who know and imagine a lot more than you can even though they appear to do less with their lives.
Insightful thanks
maybe the best song of the 80,s? fantastic
This has been on my playlist forever. A great song, remarkable band, and message. Thanks for keeping great music alive.
The Keyboard player with the glasses set up his own band World Party the following year-you would like them a lot.
Karl Wallinger from Wales.
Shawn & Mel this song is from one of my all time favorite albums "This Is The Sea". I was lucky enough to see The Waterboys live & met them. The singer , Mike Scott is a great songwriter. He's from Scotland & is the founder , singer & songwriter , he is The Waterboys. The guy in the red shirt & glasses playing keys is Karl Wallinger who had his own band called World Party. They had a hit with a song called "Ship Of Fools". You guys should do that song , i think you'd like it.
I love this song this is a great song this is a big hit in the UK I love the words to this song
The lyrics, the buildup, the musicality, and delivery = Epic Masterpiece !
The pinnacle of Celtic rock. As recommended by others here, please give Fisherman’s Blues a try. 🙏
One of the greatest songs of the 80s and all time.
Oh so glad to see you two getting to the Waterboys. They're a great band. Been a fan since A girl called Johnny, early 80's.
This is the sea and Fisherman's Blues highly recommended albums.
Another good one, y'all.
Such a great song. I love how it sneaks up on you. Start out easy bopping along then it's an anthem.
The rumour is that Mike Scott wrote this song about Prince. Mike Scott later denied that, but Prince covered the song (you can find it on youtube) at a gig and changed the lyrics to "I saw the whole of the moon" so obviously, Prince chose to believe the rumour!
Just saw him singing Purple Rain, ohmygosh amazing
Love this song.
Pan within is great too
I love this song, great music, vibe...let's go!👊☝️🤓
One of the best songs ever.
This song is old, but has been lighting up the interwebs heavy for the last six months. "Wowwwww" has been the most common reaction - it is unexpected. And then the lyrics. I believe within the music world, this is considered a GREAT TUNE. There are lots of covers; great covers too.
I saw The Waterboys in 1984 in Chicago and they opened for U2!!
Always a surprise to see The Waterboys on a reaction channel. The classic, cup half-full, half-empty song which I frequently go to when my cup is running on empty. This is a fine album, and "Fisherman's Blues" has even more of a Celtic feel. I'd like the rabbit hole, but you're not going to get enough votes. Thanks for upload.
My senior year of highschool comes 🎶 back in a flash 🎶... I miss those days 😭
There were a couple of women in my life who were so wise they made me feel like I was a child. They saw the whole of the moon.
That's beautiful.
So under-rated!!! Thanks for this one ❤️
Wonderful blast from the past, one if the all time favourites of mines, just due to vocals and composition if the instruments.
Oh and Mel your hairstyle is banging
Thank you so much for this one ❤ Love The Warboys and you 😊
Fisherman's Blues,Pan Within,Don't Bang The Drum and Too Close To Heaven (13 minutes masterpiece and true battle between sax and violins)
This whole album "This is the Sea" is great. Got to see them live once. The song of the same name is Awesome. 🤗
Waterboys are from Scotland✌️🏴 I was a teenager when this dropped in 1985 and I still love it just as much, thank you❤
Always thought they were Irish (and I'm Scottish!)
@@JohnM... From Edinburgh :)
Mike Scott the singer is from Scotland and the rest of the band are from Ireland.
@@donnajean3202 Thanks, I had no idea🌷🌷🌷🌷
Man, this takes me back. It was a different era.
This song is featured in final season of The Affair. Danced to as a flash mob. Great scene
This was thrown into many a DJ set around 88/89, DJs playing acid house would put this on and the rave would erupt in hands in the air euphoria. Two other great tracks by the band are This Is The Sea and The Big Music
Saw them live in 1989 in Portugal, amazing!!!
The Waterboys are an amazing band and have been making Big Music for years.
Written about Prince...your review of this had me in tears. Thank you 💜
The official Waterboys website's Frequently Asked Questions clarifies that Scott has said that the song's subject is "a composite of many people", including C. S. Lewis, but explicitly states that it is not about Prince.
This is my song! Crank this up the next time your flight is taking off!
Seriously one of the best songs ever written.
My absolute favorite Waterboys song is The Stolen Child, but I would also recommend This Is The Sea and A Pagan Place.
Brings back so many good and valuable memories.
Awww yeah! What a great band this was you've got to listen to the song Fisherman's Blues/ see the live video really appreciate the talent
I love this song reminds me of the summer I spent in Northern Ireland as a teen for an exchange program
Was looking to play some Waterboys & came across this.
The Waterboys are / were a very popular up and coming band from the early 80s to now. They played with U2 and could have been one of them greatest ever bands however Mike Scott did not want to take that path but rather keep a lower profile.
Just glad that you liked and appreciated it
This song just hits you when you are not expecting to be hit. It's up there with the great's in the world of classic's.I have loved this song ever since i thirst heard it.The lyrics are so powerful in it's meaning.I am so glad you both loved it and it's message of hope.
So glad you found the Waterboys.
Great song❤ and i love this band since 1984
Just simply one of the greatest songs ever. It elates me just as it did the first time I heard it when I played the album for the very first time when it was released. Perfection in every way. And that’s how I feel about all of their songs. Just pick one and enjoy. They do not disappoint.
Magic
I recommend checking out "Ship of Fools" by World Party. It's the project from the piano player and backup vocalist from The Waterboys. Great vid!
The Killers do a great live version of this fabulous song. ❤
I believe he wrote this song about Prince. Great reaction!
He said he didn’t write it about Prince, though Prince was an inspiration for this song.
Great Scottish band, met Mike Scott the singer 16 years ago in Glasgow.
God..... please release this live video version in the upcoming box set!
Another great Scottish band
Great band. You should try "And A Bang On the Ear" from their "Fisherman's Blues" album
Love this song! Years back I saw U2 at MetLife Stadium in NJ and before everything jumped off there was various music playing. When this song came on, that stadium came ALIVE! People were up dancing and there was this huge sing-along. The experience was so good, it was played again! Take a listen to World Party's "Ship of Fools" led by Waterboys former member Karl Wallinger.
I saw the Waterboys + U2 , in France.
Another good one guys
this album is so good
Such an underrated band! They were so good. I love listening to the Waterboys
Great lyrics
Prince included a cover of this song in some of his last live shows
Downham Tavern crew circa '89!? This was always the last song!
Mike Scott is a genius.
The singer is from Scotland and the rest of the band are from Ireland.
So fond of this song. Unfortunately, I can never hear it the same way without thinking of 'Father Ted' and the magnificent Graham Norton.
In their small caravan.
@@tracyconnor6166 exactly 🤣🤣🤣
WaterBoys, they are a vibe
Mel’s Haircut looks amazing. Listen to A Woman left Lonely by Janis Joplin
Mandy Moore was one if the first singers to cover this song but lots of people have covered it since.
Another couple of Scottish band you should give a listen to are ( Wet Wet Wet / Texas / Del Amitri / Danny Wilson / Aztec Camera / Travis / The Bluebells / Gallagher & Lyle / Pilot / Runrig / Middle of the Road are only a few
Wet Wet Wet " Love is all around me" would be a great song to react to. It is a cover though from the 1960's band the Troggs. The Troggs also did Wild Thing and some other big songs which slip my mind right now.
This is a fucking masterpiece 🔥
This is a song about my daughter
Try their Fisherman's Blues or the Glastonbury Song.
This song make the good example about one thing : There's no way 2000's music can beat the 80-90's in composition, mood and soul inside the song.
Today musicians were to much depending on computer to make the tunes. They've synthesized almost every sound & tune they made with DAW and other programs.
Yes they were fast & easy to composed, yes they were nice to heard......but much of them sounded so robotic and plain.
No pop up background melody
No sudden improve of vocals or instruments
No Soul and Mood in every chain of notes
Just sounded like automaton everyday alarm clock...
I really miss the old days music, when composers really composed the music from their heart.....not from CPU & Microchips
Seen these boys all over Europe.. Magical stuff and as with anything really good ,out of Ireland ! Mike and Anthony are peerless and every album they produced is perfect
Out of Ireland?? This band was first started in Edinburgh mostly university students, all Scots, the band incepted by Michael Scott , and as people come and go ,it had the brilliant Welsh musician Karl wallinger, an so it goes on .
Heard best now hard to go back to bad music good band are Gang of Four and buzzcocks
British band from the 80s
Fiona Apple does a great live studio version
Listen to Banderas This is your life !!!
You guys HAVE to listen to the lyrics....better than Dylan! It's all about how some have it handed to them on a plate while others agr just gifted.
